I'm not sure I've ever given a 1 star review before, but this place earned it. It's tiny, hectic, and crowded. You order at the counter, give your name, and wait for your food. We ordered a taco, tamale, and burrito with guacamole added for $2. My wife gave her name, which is unique and not common at all. After about 20 minutes, they brought our food out, said my wife's unique name, and put our food on the table of another couple. The server realized his mistake and brought the food to our table, after it had already been on the other table, and asked if that was ok. We should have asked them to remake it, but we didn't want to wait another 20 min. The food was not worth all the trouble. It was bland and completely flavorless, other than the taste of raw onions. There wasn't even any salt seasoning, let alone any Mexican flavor. We wished we would have gone anywhere but here for our lunch. read more

First all the meats were very salty, sometimes this works, sometimes it doesn't. We tried tacos, tamales and tostadas. The only plate I'd recommend is the chicken tacos. Great tortillas, well seasoned salsa and just the right toppings (cabbage/cilantro). Although the beef tacos had a tasty sauce, like birria style, I'd prefer less salt. Similar case for the chicken tostada, next time I'll order them with no meat since everything else on it was just as in Mexico. The tamales are not true Mexican style, they are some sort of fusion recipe, thin masa layer and lots of filling. My favorite one was the zucchini blossom/vegetarian. The iced milk coffee has cinnamon and nutmeg, really enjoyed it. Nice ambiance, clean and nice looking location. Very friendly staff. read more

The blandest, most boring vegetarian Mexican food I've ever had. Seriously... the vegetarian tostadas were two store-bought tortillas with a spread of refried beans, covered by a pile of cabbage, a pinch of cilantro, a splash of salsa and sour cream, and some cheese. My advice: Traverse City has some excellent produce available this time of year. I'd encourage you to add some roasted peppers, grilled onions, pickled radishes, and seasonal vegetables. read more

We got the quesadilla, three tacos and the tostadas. All were excellent. I had the chicken tostadas and the flavor was outstanding. The serving size was generous and it all seemed very fresh. We got the carry out using the call ahead drive up option. The location is very cute but very busy and tight driving so be patient. Well, thanks for the suggestion, Todd. Spanglish is a dinky little stop that most people would likely drive or walk right by without even noticing, but those sad folk wouldn't know what they were missing. Spanglish is a small place that packs a lot of flavor. I wound up having the rice and bean burrito, more chips and salsa/guacamole than I can care to share, and their Spanglish coffee. The rice and bean burrito wasn't anything that sounds impressive, but at the price ($6.50?), you get one hell of a filling burrito. The rice and beans at Spanglish are some of the best I've had. Many places' beans are runny or dried out with no flavor, but I didn't have that problem here, especially with some feta cheese and pico de gallo going along with it. My critiques on the burrito are minor: I wish the burrito were grilled (it's a bit too soft/wet with the filling), and had more feta in it. The chips and dips are well-worth the charge. The guacamole is silky smooth and plenty of delicious with chunks of onion and extra avocado added in. The tomatillo salsa isn't anything too out of the ordinary, but it's tangy and salty like a good one ought to be. The Spanglish coffee is a recipe I'm going to steal. It doesn't sound too special, but who knew cold coffee with a splash of milk, cinnamon, and nutmeg could be so good with a bean and rice burrito? Spanglish is an excellent authentic-ish restaurant with a small Spanish or Mexican town charm that warrants a stop for any visitor to Traverse City. It's a bit out of the downtown area, but it's a fantastic option for anybody looking for Mexican food with a little twist. read more

Fantastic. This taqueria lives up to its name: Mexican in roots with influence from north of the border. If you want a northerners take on the best part of Mexican tacos this is perfect. I adore Spanglish! We ate here twice during our four day stay in Traverse City. We enjoyed all of the food we tried. We had the tostadas, burrito, corn poblano soup, and chips and guac. The portions were generous, and the flavors were balanced. My one small nitpick would be that I enjoy a heartier chip to stand up to my guac dipping, but I'm willing to scrape my chip fragments out of the guac if it means that I'm eating Spanglish. read more

We were in Traverse City on vacation and had to hunt down this restaurant!! Food and service was amazing!! My boyfriend has two autoimmune diseases that make it hard to eat out as he has many food intolerances brought on by that, but the servers at the till were so helpful and really knew the menu to him get something safe and yummy!! Spanglish is hands down, my favorite restaurant. It's the first place I go to when I'm in TC, and their location in the beautiful Commons provides the opportunity for lots of exploring after lunch. Their tacos are always perfect, and it doesn't get any better than Spanglish guacamole. I also love picking up a bag of tamales to take home. Whatever irrevocable damage has been done, let's not draw lines to this place from Adam Sandler (at least not post-Billy Madison/Happy Gilmore). The body of work here is far stronger. I've never had anything bad at this place. I can't prove they line their pork tacos with some kind of addictive narcotic but I do get the shakes if I go more than a week without them. At night I hear their siren song calling me home, "Los tacos son tan deliciosos." (Google Translation: The tacos are so delicious!") If you happen to wander around the corner, the Lime Wit at Earthen Ales is a great pairing with the pork tacos. read more

We just left Spanglish!!! The staff are young and friendly. As mentioned in previous reviews by others there is no spicy heat at all. I had 3 tacos (beef). They were good but nothing special. I tried my wife's tostada it was a lot better than the taco. Our friend had the Big Daddy Burrito (braised beef) he said it was very good. It's a pretty neat place I would Eat here again but would try the tostada or burrito. My wife also had an iced coffee. It was good too. The chips salsa & guacamole was plenty for the 4 of us. I really wanted to give this place four stars. The food is tasty and original. We had three tacos, a tamal and an order of guac. The meat was great and the tamal was a successful re-imagination of traditional Mexican ingredients. HOWEVER: I don't care how fused your ethnic food is, you cannot even sort of make Mexican food without limes. It's just not happening. There is basic flavor chemistry that is incomplete without lime juice. Fine, at the very least have some limes around so when a guac snob like me comes around you make him happy. Also maybe some hot sauce in a damn bottle so when the snob who actually wants even the littlest degree of heat for his taco can be happy? I know this is supposed to be a pocho kitchen but, come on! No salsa bar? Not even Tapatio sauce? No spicyness options? Won't comment on the service since it was a busy day for a small place, but I do hope they get backup staff so the existing servers don't feel so stressed and mixed up. read more

My husband is a chef and his grandma is from Mexico, so we LOVE Mexican food. This is not Mexican food. Nice atmosphere, but the food was incredibly bland. No flavor at all. Authentic Mexican food is full flavor and I'm not sure that there was even salt added to anything we ordered. My expectations were high after hearing friends rave about this place. I was expecting very fresh and inventive food and was excited about the wonderful flavors. But the food here is just OK. Not bad, but just brown Midwest Mexican food. Brown. No color (I was expecting greens and reds). The tamales were flavorless and dry. The pork was dry. Nothing exciting about it. The guacamole was the blandest I've ever tasted, and it's hard to imagine what they were going for. There is better in TC, but nothing in town comes close to what you can get in the Southwest. Spanglish is on the expensive side, too. $3 for 1 tamale. I would eat here again, but only because I'm in the area and hungry, not because I would be expecting exceptional Mexican food. My wife would give it just one star. She says there was nothing but dried up pork and dried up tamale, rice and beans. My wife and I stopped in here for lunch during Valentine's Day weekend. It doesn't look like much if you're expecting a huge dining room and waiters and whatnot, but it was exactly what we expected; a cute little taco spot with some seating. Some couples walked in, looked around, then walked out. They missed out on the BEST tacos, tamales, and other Mexican goodies in the state. I had three tacos with the different meats that are on offer. My wife had a vegan tamale and the beef tacos. We agreed that they were the best that we've ever had on our various travels. We also had the chips and guacamole, the chips were super thin with the right amount of salt. If you like tacos, you have to stop by Spanglish. Simply awesome. read more

Oh heck yes. When I first started coming to Spanglish, I was a vegetarian. They converted me. I now eat barbacoa beef tacos like some kind of deserted island survivor just brought back to civilization. It gets messy and ugly, which is why I tend to take my food home instead of eat it in public. But whether you get a veggie burrito or beef tacos, everything is well-seasoned and just so good. At first glance, a Big Daddy burrito is going to be way too big to eat in one sitting. But grab your napkins kids, because you will be eating this as-big-as-your-head monstrosity at an outside bench with no shame, and even contemplate ordering an extra to bring home "just in case." I have had a lot of those moments myself, you're not alone. And I say outside bench just in case things get really messy. My daughter absolutely loves the plain and simple cheese quesadilla and keeps begging me to ask the folks at Spanglish what kind of cheese they use. But I know if I do, then all I will make at home will be quesadillas, and it will also mean that I won't have an extra reason to go to Spanglish and pig out myself. So I am not going to ask. Did you think you could go to Qdoba and be as satisfied? You are so silly. This locally owned house of culinary goodness puts all other "similar" venues to shame in TC. And for some reason, whenever I go, Mario Batali is there. It's nice to know that we make the same shameful (but awesome) food pilgrimage on a very often basis. FRESH! That's the best word for this joint. The salsa was incredible and tasted like it had just been made! It had avocado in it! What?!!! Yum!! I licked the bowl clean! I had a pork tamale because they were out of the three sisters (bummer!), veggie taco, and salsa and chips....everything was amazing! Wish I worked at the village because I would come here for lunch regularly! They have a customer loyalty program too if you're a local. I went to a lot of the "top rated" places in town and I was really disappointed with Traverse City's food. (I had high expectations after seeing that TC was rated as one of the best food towns in the Midwest.) Spanglish almost single-handedly saved Traverse City's reputation. The pork tacos were phenomenal. My girlfriend has the same experience with her variety of tacos. Fresh, delicious, more traditional tacos. Honestly, I'm not even sure what else to add to the review.
