Everyone says Spanky's is a Lubbock "must try", truly while it might be a Tech icon. I don't believe that their burgers or menu iteams are anything to make a worthy fuss. Spanky's is you neighborhood capitalism in the disguise of a friendly local. While the people in it are locals, it is a very touristy place to be. The Señor frogs of the LBK. Their burgers are nothing to scream about, pretty plain. Plain hamburger bread, OK meat quality and quantity, and decent fries. If you're looking to come here to get drunk and enjoy a good snack have at it! The most worthy item menu as told by the regulars is the fried cheese. I love cheese sticks, so I've got a soft for them. Very good in quanity, the cheese will literaly come out of your ears, thats how much cheese there is. However, the amount of fat in that will definately come out of your pores in the next few hours. If you're going to dine in, I suggest trying the cheese, grabbing a good drink, and maybe trying something other than a burger. Maybe the Philly. Try it once, and move on. read more

Stopped in needing a quick bite to eat. This place is a flat out dive. Employees completely disinterested in their jobs. Ordered a BLT, fries and a Coke. The BLT consisted of 3 slices of bacon, 2 pieces of lettuce and a tomato slice that had drowned in the excessive mayonnaise on the toasted white bread. The service here gets worse and worse each time I come here. I ordered a grilled chicken Caesar salad with dressing on the side and my boyfriend ordered a burger. He got his burger 20 minutes before I got my salad, AND it didn't come with chicken just tossed dressing in it (I asked for it on the side). 5 stars for hands down the best "cheese sticks" on the planet.....one serving of those is an entire meal....all their food is great, greasy all-American faire and great for the hangover........I see Spankys has not slipped since I first came to Tech in 1985 and continues to please. I just wish I still had the metabolism to eat that type of food regularly. I have been to Spanky's plenty of times during my college years at Tech and never had an issue. I visited while in town this past Sunday and was highly disappointed. For starters the cluster they call an ordering counter. No one knew where to begin a line and the girl behind the one register that was open was not friendly or helpful. It took 45 minutes to get our two burgers and fried cheese. While we waited they were out of sweet tea and the place was a mess. The food was also nothing great. I could of made better burgers at home. Sad to say, but if you want a burger head to Twisted Root. I will not be hurrying back to this place anytime soon. read more

The fried cheese is great and we love the burgers, but the service is terrible. I fully understand that this is a college town, but that does not excuse bad behavior. Today I watched a server toss a basket of fried cheese on a customers table...as she walked on by. My husbands burger arrived burnt, and the apology by the server was less than sincere. The servers also huddled around the cash wrap upstairs and stuffed their mouths full of food, while ignoring customers requests for to-go boxes. Since I am not a college kid, but a college students mom, I expect a certain level of service, no matter where I'm eating. The food is so good (albeit very greasy and unhealthy, so plan your day around it if you're trying not to gain 5lbs from a meal) but the service I've had every time I've gone to Spanky's has left a lot to be desired. They messed up our order twice tonight and then charged us for the fried cheese sticks that they missed in the first place. They brought out the wrong food to us the first time and one of the workers was actually argumentative with me when I brought our wrong order back. The draft beer is served in plastic cups which is just another kind of annoying tally to add up to our less than good experience (since plastic bends when you try to hold it while it's full of liquid). Prices are a little unreasonable in my opinion, but I guess if you rarely go out to eat, dropping around $30 for two for dinner isn't as bad as some other food establishments. Also, our table was very shaky and unstable. We had to avoid touching it while our drinks and food were on it or else we would have had laps full of fried cheese. The last time I went, there weren't any blatant mess ups, but the flippant attitudes of the workers is a recurring experience for me at Spanky's. I plan on returning for the good food at some point because it has its merits, and I hope the service improves because I want to be able to rave about what a great restaurant it is. This place was recommended to us, so we stopped in not really knowing what to expect. Got their Texas Philly cheese steak and it was darn good. They had $2 fried pickles (which were awesome) and onion ring (which were okay). We also made sure to order the famous fried cheese, which was huge but was a bit of a let down...Pretty good with the ranch, but just not enough flavor on their own. Spanky's.. known for the fried cheese. I honestly don't remember what I ordered for food, a burger of some sort that was good but not that impressive. I ordered a half serving of fried cheese, which was plenty in addition to a burger and fries. The reviews of the fried cheese were not exaggerated. They were quite amazing. The closest thing I have in Newport Beach is cheese on a stick, which is good but doesn't compare at all. Some people I talked to told me they traveled from afar for the fried cheese. First restaurant to try in Lubbock and it didn't disappoint. Food was great. I had the cheeseburger and it had great flavor. Just what you would expect from a local college burger place. Fries were softer than I typically like- more like carnival fries from back East. But very good nonetheless. Fries cheese was huge and very good too. A few people have commented on the cleanliness. With as fast as they turn over tables, there were crumbs in the floor. But more like a Texas Roadhouse feel with their peanuts on the floorZ. Waited 30min for a burger and chicken strips. We ordered extra onions on the burger and it came with none. The burger patty was way smaller than the bun and the chicken fingers were so greasy the breading fell off with every bite. My husband said that the burger was pretty flavorless and the cheese tasted like Kraft singles. The only reason I'm giving two stars is that the fried cheese was tasty. read more

Let me start with we were greeted by enthusiastic staff who were helpful with menu selections. My daughter and I knew the portion sizes and opted to share a salad that was topped with grilled veggies and chicken.
