    Front window, reflecting Main Street.
    Lianne K.

When in downtown Ventura, check out the SPARC Second Chance Store! For many years, there have been a number of thrift shops on the lower part of Main Street, near the Mission. This one has consistently shone above others. The way they organize the store, from the dual large display windows in the front, to the departmental style for presenting merchandise, it feels cozy and easy to shop. The staff members at the cash wrap are always gracious. As others have noted, they pack fragile items carefully. The housewares seem to be of better quality than other thrifts. They organize them by colors and styles, as much as possible. We almost always find something we'd like to take home. I've picked up brand new seasonal scented liquid hand soap, gently used décor items, vases, and a whole farmyard holiday lighted set with accessories. Some of their furniture items have been tempting. Prices are fair. We always gravitate to this store, and we'll surely be back on our next Ventura visit.

The cups Made it back safely in the well wrapped bag she put it in. Thanks SPArc!

Excellent business! Great staff! Good cause! This place is pretty well organized and clean for a thrift shop. The building is interesting - perhaps an old theater prior to being a thrift store? Anyhow, the cashiers and staff are very kind and I believe are mostly volunteers. The proceeds mostly go to the Santa Paula Animal rescue. They seem to love pets - sell some pet stuff and they offer dogs small treats if it's ok to do so. The cashier was very sweet and wrapped up my cups very well so they didn't break on my walk! I forgot to take a nice pic inside the store but here's the cups and the bag she packed them in nicely. Thanks!

Gorgeous 77-piece set of Johnson Bros China for $100!!!

Had a great time in Ventura, as usual, but the best part of our day was stopping into the SPARC thrift store and finding a 77-piece Johnson Bros Heritage white china set for $100! This was my late mom's everyday dishware and it was obliterated in the Northridge earthquake. Bought the set and the lovely employees (didn't catch their names...dark-haired young man and woman, man had a beard iirc) wrapped up each piece, with tape! They helped us get it to the car and it survived a backseat trip back home. What a great experience and supporting my favorite cause: animals. Will definitely be back. P.S.: there was also a gorgeous Limoges set for an incredible price. Thrifters should not overlook this store.

Crack from one side to the other.

I went in this store on sat. 6/6/20. I bought 2 single folding tv tables. I got them home and put them aside and went about my business. Today 6/7/20 I pulled the wrappers off which made them seems new, and they were. I was black and one was a light finish. I noticed the black one had some of the varnish scraped off. ( no big deal) the light colored one was cracked completely across with just the cross rails holding it together. I called and was told "No Returns or Exchanges" I assumed that was if you just didn't like something or it was a wrong size? But to say that about something that was neither my fault or there's, was a bit or should I say quite wrong. I figured because it was broken it would have been a different outcome. It's nothing to do with buyer beware, it's more of a decent thing to do. SHAME, SHAME, SHAME!

I remember one doggie photo on their website that actually was a bit scary looking, and it turned out that the dog with the 'tough guy' photo was in the kennel right next to one we were investigating. Funny thing was, in person, the tough guy was not even slightly scary, in fact he was as gentle as a lamb. Guess who came home with us? Yeah the one I'd judged incorrectly based on one photo; he is the treasure of our family now, such a good boy. Well, when the following August (2025) rolled around and the shelter had another adoption event, we decided to find a playmate for our boy dog. We looked at a few and settled on one female that obviously did not like being in doggie jail, seems she was a bit mouthy at times which made her unpopular with visiting folks. I saw potential though, and we took her home with us, and as I felt, the light nipping has diminished over time. Though a tad crazy, she is a fun addition to our home and she can actually fly at times in our large backyard. Both dogs have grown quite affectionate with one another over time, and both even get along with our kitty. Overall, VCAS is a great place to find a friend, and give them a loving forever home.

During a family move, my dog got out while staying with relatives and was taken to this shelter by animal control. Unfortunately, we hadn't updated our landline number, so we weren't notified right away. When we finally came looking for her, we were told she would be held for a certain time and that, due to her being a senior, we should come sooner rather than later. Sadly, when my mom and I arrived, she had already been put down. I was much younger and very emotional, and overcrowding was mentioned at the time. While this experience was heartbreaking, I don't hold it against them today. The shelter is now no-kill, and I truly believe in growth and change. I adopted my first dog from here as a puppy and adopted one of my current dogs eight years ago. Both experiences were positive--everyone was kind, helpful, and caring. Customer service has been great, and the staff deserves more recognition for the compassion they show. I definitely recommend adoption and will always believe in this message: don't shop--please adopt

I am absolutely, unequivocally obsessed with cats. Frankly, I worship them more than the Egyptians…read moredid and I am quite sure they are Gods. In fact, I am throwing my cat a 5th birthday party literally at the time of this review (she gets a party every year!) and she is laying near me as I type these words waxing her kind, poetic. This means that any place that involves cats is a place I want to be; and thus: cat cafes is a trend I stand behind. A place to hang out with cats AND promote adoptions of said cats on premises? Yes, please! These cafes are growing in popularity and one of note is Purrmaid Cat Café, located in Camarillo a stone's throw from the famous Camarillo Outlets (on the way from Los Angeles to the outlets at the exit prior). Typically, not much positive can be said of social media platform, Facebook but just this once: I can thank them. My cat-loving algorithm is what introduced me to Purrmaid as I proceed to 'follow' the business and engage with the owner on her posts. I immediately knew there was something different about Purrmaid from their competitors and that I would someday need to visit. Purrmaid is the love project of husband-and-wife team Robin (who goes by Cat) and Jeff Kent who were locally known as animal advocates and top-of-the-line pet foster parents. Having dreams of opening an animal sanctuary; the universe opened the door for them as their friend Nikki, OG owner of Purrmaid was giving up the reigns and Robin and Jeff knew this was their time to shine and took over. The rest is history. Located in a busy but quiet strip plaza shopping center; Purrmaid is super welcoming the second you cross their threshold. The small lobby area is colorful, smells amazing and is filled with cat merch for sale from local artists. Refreshments (soda, coffee, water) and Robin's very own homemade baked goods are available for a small sum (and adorably, Purrmaid posts on their socials as though the cats pick the deserts for the day/week!). You must try these desserts! The selections during my visit were chocolate chip cookies and brownies and although these may sound basic - my boyfriend and I were obsessed! The cookies were chewy and soft with browned butter caramelization flavor. So good! Purrmaid isn't your typical cat café and is so much better. After signing a release and paying the $6/person fee (must be at least 7 years of age and children must be accompanied by an adult); you enter the cat room which eschews the standard clinical feel of cat cafes and is instead set-up like a living room which carpeting, couches, arm chairs plus cat towers, shelves and toys galore. Purrmaid is spotless (which my OCD approves) and has a calming, quiet, Zen energy. At Purrmaid, you will feel like you are simply hanging with Robin and her beautiful feline Gods in her living room! Robin and Jeff also have the best interest of the kitties in mind as the cats have access to a cat door to a back room they can 'escape' to when they don't feel like being around guests. Or, they can live out their wild cat fantasies watching bird TV. This is truly a Grade-A cat café. Even the bathroom was spotless and decorated with cats down to the hand towels! As amazing and obsessed with cats Purrmaid is; their mission is to find the cats a forever home and they take this very seriously with a $150 fee, application and home visit and adoption contract. Robin is not playing around when finding the perfect home for these cats whom often come from prior traumatic situations. Want to hold an event or birthday party at Purrmaid? Or attend one of their events like tarot card readings? Yup, they do that too! Purrmaid is an amazing facility! Purrmaid is a purr-fect cat café and Robin and Jeff are simply wonderful individuals running an amazing business. If you are even mildly obsessed with cats - or looking to adopt - you must visit Purrmaid Wed- Sundays 11am-5pm. Heck, you may even see me because I already want to return!

You want to rescue them all but you can't. All you can do is spread some love around the cages and, if the stars align, get to take a new family member home. They do what they can at this City of LA shelter in Chatsworth. It's totally overbooked with dogs who would much rather be lounging on your rug at home. By some crazy coincidence, someone had turned in a Korean Jindo, which was the breed I had in mind. Our amazing attendant got "James" out of the cage and into one of the large meet-and-greet areas. While it's tough to bond with 50 other dogs barking their heads off, I knew it was a match. All dogs must be neutered/spayed before they can leave the animal shelter. Because James had already been fixed, there was nothing to do but pay the fee and invite him into the Lambo. At this time (February 2026), fees are halved to reduce overcrowding, so my total cost for James, including being up to date on rabies and all vaccines and micro-chipping, was $51. What I like a lot is that the shelter provides you with detailed notes taken by staff and volunteers who have interacted with your pet. Though James had only been at the shelter for about five weeks, there were plenty of comments (friendly, warms up after a few minutes, not a barker) which gave me some extra confidence. Check out the shelter for your new family member soon!

About two weeks ago I took in a large dog because the previous owner was going to take him to the shelter and I felt bad for the dog. I wanted to try to keep him, but after keeping him for a short time I noticed the dog was becoming aggressive toward my wife and my kids. I have small children at home and I cannot take risks when it comes to their safety, so I decided the responsible thing to do was to bring the dog to the shelter since I could not keep him and I could not find anyone who could safely take him. When I arrived, the supervisor Troy came outside and immediately had a rude attitude. Instead of trying to help, she started questioning me in a way that felt more like an interrogation than a normal conversation. She kept asking why I had my wife's ID with me, how the dog knows me, and why I was bringing the dog there. I understand staff may need to ask questions, but the way she spoke was disrespectful and unnecessary. I explained that I live in the 91344 area and that the dog was not safe around my family, but she kept arguing and acting like I was doing something wrong. In the end, she refused to take the dog, which made no sense to me because this is exactly what animal shelters are for. People come there when they cannot safely keep an animal. What bothered me the most is that she is a supervisor. If a supervisor behaves this way, it gives a very bad impression of the whole place. People who come to a shelter are already stressed, and the staff should treat them with respect, not attitude. I tried to do the right thing by bringing the dog to the shelter instead of abandoning him somewhere, and I left feeling frustrated and disappointed. This was not the kind of experience I expected from a city animal shelter. I hope management looks into this, because situations like this should be handled much more professionally
