Haven't been here in 6 years because we moved across the country for 5 years but now we are back and decided to go to it. Prices were beyond insanely HIGH. Wowza. Most clothing was $8 but new with tags automatically $15 it looked like. But I love to hunt for the crazy clearances ( half price tags) and lucked out with a new Chicago cubs t shirt ( new with tags) but had the half price tag on it .. $175.00 for a set of fiesta? May have better luck selling them by each piece. No idea if I will return again. Lower the prices? Something. read more

Wow, their prices have really gone up. Their new management is a step down, as one of their best staff members is no longer working there, and they now claim to be an upscale resale shop. While they are allowed to rebrand, they haven't put out any signage or anything else to announce this to their customers. They should do this, so then, customers are informed as to why the prices have gone up so much. I used to love shopping here but now I would much rather go to Goodwill. T.J. Maxx is cheaper than this place, and has a better selection. I'm sure Sparrow's Nest won't care about this review, since they do not listen to customer feedback or take it seriously. read more

I used to very much enjoy shopping here. However, in the past year or so, their pricing has gotten ridiculous. The store is neat and well organized and the staff clearly takes pride in well curated displays. While all this is great, it is still a thrift store selling pre-owned, donated items. The pricing should reflect that model and mostly does not. Way more expensive than similar shops in the area. read more

This review should be read in mind of pre and post pandemic. Please take the time to parse my statements as to why I support this store and why I gave it 3 stars. I absolutely believe you should visit it and buy from it given your means. This is a non profit thrift store that had to close down for significant periods of time and lost revenue like everyone else AND I believe the staff are either volunteers or working at a discount so please keep that in mind. I believe that the staff is doing the best they can given the situation-so please give them the benefit of the doubt. They are not twisting their mustaches thinking about how they can foil you like an old school villain. They're probably just trying to pay the bills and survive. I enjoy thrift stores, especially those that support a greater good. According to the site: "These stores not only provide a source of revenue for our programs and services, they also provide vouchers to help clients with clothing and specific needs and help other agencies when they have a critical need!  With the support of over 700 volunteers per year Home of the Sparrow is able to accomplish its mission.  Home of the Sparrow relies on contributions from donors, event revenue (sponsorship, attendees), Third-Party Hosted events, grants and financial support from the Thrift stores.  You can make a difference -Your support can change someone's life!" That being said, the prices are more akin to eBay than traditional second hand stores where you can find a deal. I'm thinking covid has been forcing higher prices, especially for better product. Books and dvds are still a good buy here. Not much else is. At any rate, this location should now be considered an upscale resale shop rather than a thrifters dream. I can't say I blame them too much as arbitrage and pickers are rampant. Covid as well since there's fewer shoppers, and for resale which is traditionally a higher age range that has stayed home for the last year. The staff is nice and the store is well kept. I'd say this is perfect for someone willing to spend a little more for some clean decent home goods at a fine price donated from a fairly well off donor base. I'll still pop in from time to time and I support their mission and wish them well. Hopefully after the pandemic prices will lower but either way you should swing by. read more

I came in to Sparrows Nest in Third Lake Illinois on Monday, February 12, 2024 around 12:15. Easter items were being put out on display. I grabbed a pair of tapered candles & another lady had a tall ceramic rabbit statue & one other item already in her cart. The assistant manager, on duty at the time, came over & quite rudely told us that the items in that area are not for sale yet. The other shopper asked the assistant manager if the items, already in her cart, have to be put back. The assistant manager did not really give her an answer. She kind of shrugged her shoulders & scrunched up one side of her face. I ran across the other shopper in another part of the store later & we agreed that the assistant manager sounded very rude. I continued walking around the store & as I was approaching the doors, I spotted the QR codes to leave a review for both Yelp & Google. As I was scanning one of the QR codes, another gentleman & his daughter had items in their cart & the assistant manager came up again; again rudely telling him that the items in that area are not for sale at the moment. He had items in his cart & continued to purchase them anyway. The gentleman at the counter apologized & rang him up. That same customer left but came back in the store & asked to talk the the actual store manager. I told him that he probably would not get anywhere as, in most cases, the hierarchy of a business will back up what someone else says or does, usually someone lower on the "totem pole", as not to have the original person look bad. The manager on duty at that time did come up to talk to us & gave us excuses/reasons they ask that no shopping be done during display setup. Her reasons are as follows: - It is frustrating to the person setting up. First, I have to say, the lady putting up the display showed no frustration & she also, in a way, apologized for the assistant manager. She had no issue with us taking items to purchase & supporting Sparrows Nest's cause. I work retail myself, slightly different, and if a person wants to take something, that's less I have to put on display - bonus for me. Also, if the customers are forced to wait until the items are on display & then takes them, not only was time spent putting those items on display in the first place, but now more time is spent on resetting/facing/balancing the remaining items. - The location's manager also explained that they like to take pictures of the completed displays for posting on various social medias. It seems she is more concerned how the store looks to the public sitting at home and possibly "corporate" (for lack of a better title), than taking care of the supporters that are in the store wanting to make purchases. Granted, someone else down the line will probably come in & purchase those same items we were going to, so in the long run, the store will get their money (at the cost of at least 4 unhappy customers). One last thing...As I stand in the store typing this, I witnessed other customers come up to that area. They were approached in a vastly different way...very, almost sugary sweet way. I couldn't help but chuckle to myself. I guess that is it. read more

Unbelievable. I've been donating here for YEARS. I had a sectional that I wanted to donate. The communication was relentless and they wanted a ton of photos and info but I understood. I used large throw pillows instead of back cushions (I tossed them because they weren't machine washable). I ended a trip early so I can be home on the day they were coming to pick it up and was also told they charge you for $10 gas. Just an FYI. They showed up 3 hours early (the guys were VERY nice)and said they can't take it because it didn't have back cushions. Never again with this place. read more

I purchased a number of much needed new tops since gaining a lot of weight during covid. I thought the selection was pretty good, easy to find things, and decent prices. I have shopped eBay and Threadup and found their prices to be very competitive. Dropping off donations couldn't be easier. Just pulled up in back, rang, the bell, and off they went. read more
