Very hard to communicate with. They say they will do something and they don't. They string you along for long periods of time and then ignore you. They do not answer basic questions about their procedures and policies. Responses are very short and cold. They are not communicating with anyone on Facebook, via phone, or email. They have been closed to in person visits for two weeks (which was supposed to be one week) due to another outbreak of kennel cough from what they told the public weeks ago. No updates anywhere including Facebook, their website, or via voicemail. They are actively ignoring the community and dozens of people have been waiting for weeks for information. There is a group of concerned animal advocates on Facebook that have been trying to figure out what is going on because now dogs are disappearing from their website and they are refusing to talk to anyone. I have worked in rescue my entire life and I've never seen anything like this. It is truly mind blowing. We hope the dogs are okay, but nobody knows because they won't talk. At this point, I don't know if we would believe what they say anyways. Trust has been broken. This is by far the most bizarre experience I've ever had with a rescue or shelter in all the decades I've been in rescue professionally and in a volunteer capacity. I used to donate to this place yearly and talk them up every chance I got, I won't be doing that anymore. They are doing the opposite of what a professional, compassionate, and legitimate 501c3 non profit does and it is making the community very uncomfortable. The woman behind the front desk is nothing but RUDE! The cat I tried to adopt is still sitting there a month later. She gave me a disgusted look when I walked in the door and it was obvious she judged me by my tattoos. They NEVER called my vet or references. The sweet lady in the adoption area was surprised the sweet kitty came out and relaxed in my lap. She stated she was going to let the staff know up front of receptive the kitty was because he is a hider. I own my home, my vet knows me and how well I take care of my fur babies. It is disgusting that personal feelings keep an animal from a good loving home. Luckily, another rescue was more than happy to allow me to adopt, but it is just sad for the animals at Suncoast, SPCA. read more

I have been trying to adopt a dog and i've done everything that they've asked filled out their application gave them contact phone numbers and references. Gave them my vets name and number. And they say that they've called them and left messages and don't get returned calls and I called my references and my vet and they have never received a call asking for a references about me, in reference to adopting a dog from the SPCA SunCoast. They say "Lisa" called and left messages but my references say they have never gotten a call from "Lisa" or the SPCA SunCoast. I guess I am going back to the Humane Society of Tampa where I got my last dog in 2019. Plus the fees are cheaper anyways at the Humane Society! My 17 year old passed away 2 weeks ago and my other 2 dogs are lost without her so I want to get another dog. read more

I've adopted one of the best dogs I ever had from the SPCA on Congress St. Spencer lived a long and happy life. He loved the boat and he loved running in the woods behind our house. I volunteered at the SPCA awhile, with cats. They try hard to keep their place clean and attractive. There's never enough donations. Please note that the ASPCA, advertising on TV, is not giving them funds. SPCA's are entirely local. read more

The people at the front desk were so helpful and ready to answer any questions I had. They were polite and friendly. The office and animal areas were clean. They really care for the animals. If you visit, talk to them. The shelter also requests references and vet information just like the rescues do. I think it is a great idea and again, shows you how much they care. read more

My application for the puppy I requested was not chosen because other applications were ahead of mine. The staff was so kind to me while having to let me down. All the reviews on this organization are extremely outdated so i thought i would post an up to date review with a completely honest opinion. SPCA Suncoast is the best shelter i've ever been to, the staff is so friendly and knowledgeable. There is not a single animal in there that isn't treated with respect and love. Of course this is a shelter, not a factory, these animals have stories and they're not perfect. Please be educated on the animal you're adopting before taking him or her home. I rescued my family dog from here a couple years ago and he's honestly the biggest blessing we could've asked for and i truly believe it's mostly because of the way he was treated in the shelter and the kindness he was shown by humans. I felt this was a bad example of an SPCA. I wanted to look at dogs & they showed me the door to the dog room & that was that. Of course upon entering their was a loud chorus of barking from the scared dogs. Many cages had info on the dog, but many did not & there was no one to ask. They only have inside kennels, so the dogs must urinate & defecate in the cages that they live in. That made me quite sad. Aren't they closing puppy mills for unsanitary conditions? I realise funding is low & they are Probabally doing the best that they can, under the circumstances. What I don't understand is why the people sitting in the front room, did not try to help me get a dog? When I was leaving...nothing, no one approached me. I guess these poor dogs have a life sentence! What's a girl to do? Go back & see if I can rescue at least one. read more

A year and a half ago, someone dumped a cat in front of my house. His microchip was registered to this place. I called them asking them what to do with the cat. They told me to take the cat (Licorice) to a shelter! It is their cat, microchipped to them, and they would not take him back. Instead, they tell me to take a black cat to a kill shelter! Suncoast Animal League took him and he was adopted. They for sure will take their cats back if they are ever lost or dumped! Also, I called them Thursday inquiring about kittens I had. The rudest most unhelpful woman answered the phone. Says a lot about your business. Seriously. If you hate your job and hate answering the phone and dealing with the public- FIND A NEW JOB. Went there to look at a dog and no where online did it say the dog was dog aggressive so their classifications of dogs online is not accurate and then the puppy I looked at, which they have no breed information on, seeing as they do not know who the father was they are trying to charge $400 for a mutt puppy. Staff clearly has taken the time to build relationships with the animals in their care. They are super friendly each time we come to visit and browse the dogs and cats. They try to find pets that will best fit your lifestyle and require a meet and greet between your current pets and potential adoptions-- great policy to ensure that whatever home the animal goes to will surely become his/her forever home. read more

I adopted my poodle from the SPCA on Congress St. it was a simple process and we had him for 9 years. The workers and volunteers are always kind and very dedicated to the animals in their care. I adopted my pup, Stewie from here and it is a great place to go to find your new best friend. The shelter is around the corner from my house, so my husband and I are there often to drop off shelter supplies when they make requests, but we never adopted from there. However, when we lost our beloved Snoop the end of July of last year, a week later, we went over there to "just look" and consider perhaps getting another dog somewhere down the road. They had just had a puppy palooza event there so there were a bunch of brand new pups that were just shipped in from Alabama. While it was never our intention to get a puppy...we were set on getting an older dog like we always had in the past, there was a lab pup who was all alone in the back who looked so sad, and so much like our Snoop, that we adopted him right then and there. He was only 3 months old, but already 30 pounds. He was a big guy, and because he was a lab/great dane mix, they told us that he would not be easily adopted because no one wants a dog that big. Well, we did. We took him home right then and there. :) The shelter is very clean. The attendants are very patient and sit with you outside while you get to know your potential new friend. The dogs seem pretty happy, except for the fact that they are scared and caged. Of course, that will occur in every shelter...but they all looked very well cared for. All the dogs appeared to have been freshly bathed and well groomed. There is a big area for them to go run outside. They are very choosy with the potential parents. You have to fill out a bunch of paperwork. If you live in an apartment, (we don't) you have to get a letter from your landlord stating that you can have a dog there. When you adopt, they offer a free "well care" visit at VCA Little Animal Hospital, which is the vet we use any way, so we were really pleased about that. When we got Stewie checked out, he was in great health. They give you a free collar and leash for your doggie when you adopt and coupons and incentives to adopt, like coupons for dog food and puppy training. Any questions we had, they readily answered. They keep great records on all the animals there, so you can find out as much about your baby as you can. All the animals are spayed/neutered and chipped before you adopt. The average fee to adopt a dog is about $150. (Don't know what the fee is for kitties). The people at the shelter are very friendly and patient with your questions. They encourage you to bring your children there to have a meet/greet with your potential new friend to see if they get on well with the kids before you adopt. We don't have little ones ourselves any more, but we do have two grandchildren who at the time were under 4, so this was a great thing to be able to do before we committed to our puppy. They are very committed to finding the "right fit" between pet and adoptive family. Now Stewie is 7 months old and we just adore our SEVENTY FIVE pound horse! LOL He's so happy and healthy and we could not imagine life without him. If you are not in the position to adopt, they are always looking for volunteers to come play with the dogs and cats, or bring them supplies, like dog food and blankets. They also have a foster program for their pets, if you are so inclined and can help when their facility reaches maximum capacity. They try very hard not to turn any animal away. They are a NO KILL shelter and are always holding events to help get these sweet creatures adopted. They also take in animals who would otherwise end up on the street so please, if you can no longer keep your pets, consider bringing them to the shelter instead of turning them loose and hoping they survive on their own devices. Please get your dogs and cats spayed and neutered to help control the animal population in Pasco which is really out of control. Overall, our experience with SPCA Suncoast went very well...and if we are ever looking to adopt again, we will definitely go back. Thank you, SPCA Suncoast for helping us to find our new best friend and healing the emptiness we had in our hearts when we lost our boy. You people were so kind, warm and understanding. The dogs look like they haven't been bathed in months, I pet a dog and it turned my fingers brown, and their cages were disgusting. Made me sad to see the dogs like that, the floors of the kennels were wet or had feces in them. The employees didn't help us at all, they didn't even great us when we walked in, just starred at us then kept talking to each other. Overall bad experience. read more

we got our puppy there and they were a liter of 8 and they only knew the mother and not the father so we ddi not know what we were taking home but we loved the little guy a lot we were told the dog would have nothing wrong with him or anything like that turns out he had worms and we had to pay for that the dog has been a blast and the people there were nice too! i recommend it if you know what your paying for! read more

I went there a couple weeks ago with the intention of meeting a specific dog after a week of emailing about him. Upon arriving I was immediately told that I didn't want this dog because he had bitten someone the week before. I was told I could go into a room and look at other dogs or look at a book on the table of available dogs for adoption. Of course, the first dog in the book was the one I came to meet:( The ladies behind the desk mostly ignored me and talked between themselves. You would think when you have someone in front of you wanting to adopt a dog they would be helpful or interested in helping you. There was a cute little yorkie behind the desk that they said was surrendered that day. I was interested in seeing him. When the girl finally brought him around to me she just stood there holding the leash and looking everywhere but me or the dog...no engagement at all. I asked if I could go get my dogs to meet this dog to see if they got along and was told they would be closing soon...it was 4:15...website said open until 6. They was told this dog would be adopted quickly. I was so upset over the whole experience that I just left. Before I drove away, I spoke to a lady that said she was a Board Member and she took my number and said she would call me to set a time to have a meet and greet with my dogs and the yorkie the following Thursday. I haven't heard from anyone from there since. If this place wants to find homes for the dogs they need to work on their people skills and be helpful to people coming in to adopt . I feel sorry for the dogs there. I won't return just because of how I was treated. read more

Worst place i hve ever been. They put our pom on a choker. She has nvr had one. For a meet with another dog. I understood until she yanked her by the neck and slipped out of her collar. She put it back on and nxt thing we no she is hving trouble breathing do to anxiety. Our dog has NEVER been treated that way!! Will nvr go back there. No wonder our dog wasnt willing to cooperate. They had a chiuhaha we wnted. Our dog would hve made friends. Dont treat my dog like that! Never again! We will find her a friend somewhere else. A friendlier place! read more

I adopted my sweet boy "Charlie" June 11th only a few days after he was surrendered to the SPCA Suncoast. I'm sure there will always be unsuccessful adoptions. As all the animals are taken in as strays or from families who can no longer care for them, there is always a chance taken when choosing to adopt. I was told Charlie did not get along well with other pets, and after a few visits to Petsmart or walks around my neighborhood, I can definitely see what they meant. But...everyday I'm thankful for the SPCA Suncoast and for the joy Charlie has brought to my life and the lives of my family and friends. He's going to require some time and attention to address he relentless barking at other dogs, but I wouldn't trade him in for any other dog in the world. He is absolutely perfect in every other way!!! What was lost on Charlie by his previous family finding no other choice but to surrender him, was found by me in having the companion of a lifetime!!! read more

I would start by saying these animals meaning dogs and cats but really this is mainly in regards to the dogs. The cats have rooms with toys, soft beds and blankets and a large bright area for people to spend time with. The dogs live in these sad dingy rusted and ziptided together kennels. These poor dogs are not allowed toys, blanket, and only get the plastic beds. The staff that were all fired due to the boards non compliance to their staffs concerns. The dogs do not get the socialization they need. Though the staff has brought up the concerns and begged the community to help the board was against it. The board throws out every article donated to the shelter unless its food cleaning supplies or cat litter. I can slightly understand the ridiculous adoption fees but what i don't understand is why there are no new kennels. The buildings foundations are practically washed out, there is a hole in the ceiling in the main kennel and yet the only thing they worry about is cats. They had a small group of hard working reliable staff members they didn't care and terminated them all. They are greedy rather then asking what the animals needed telling us they needed us to put pleas out for money. The shelter has plenty of money but nothings being done. Needs to be shut down or a whole new board. read more

We have adopted two dogs from here. The last dog that we adopted was a disaster. Simply put, they told us things about the dog that were simply not true. Looking back, it was obvious that they loved the dog and were willing to lie in order to find it a home. What happened? Well, the "bite marks" all over the dog's legs and face turned out to be a severe skin condition that the average person could not afford to treat. On top of that she has serious emotional problems that we were not made aware of either. In the end we spent thousands of dollars that we did not have on a dog that we were told was "perfect". Worse part of all was that they would not take her back. Beware of any rescue organization that will not allow you to return the animal. Especially considering that Animal Control is no longer open admission. There is simply no help for anyone in Pasco County that finds themselves in this sort of predicament. We eventually found another rescue that took her off our hands. If not for them we would have had to put her to sleep. Bottom line is this place lied to us about the dog they adopted to us and we're then completely unhelpful when the problems arose. Don't bother with them. read more

He is all that they said he was and have been very helpful answering any questions we have had, we would not hesitate getting another dog from them. I cannot begin to tell you how upset I am. My daughter, granddaughters, and I went to SPCA Suncoast on Friday February 24th to see a dog that was up for adoption. We were told no dogs could be adopted until March 1st because a possibly contagious animal had been dropped off. We were told to return on Wednesday March 1st and that we would be the first to see this dog. The man working took down my contact information. In addition I called and left a message and sent an email confirming my interest in this animal and that we were told we would be first to see him. All weekend long the family was very excited imagining this new member to our family. We returned shortly after noon on Wednesday as instructed only to find that he had been adopted out already. My daughter and granddaughters are heartbroken . Why have this procedure in place if nobody even follows it or answers the phone or looks at emails? This is why people go to Craigslist and other sites looking for animals. read more

I had a horrible experience with this shelter to say the least. I pull up to the shelter to find the employees smoking outside and completely ignoring those of us waiting to be let in. Also I was misinformed about the breed of the puppy I adopted. She was also full of highly transmissible parasites along with bordetella which then passed to my other dogs causing them to become extremely ill. In all I've spent about $600 on these dogs just in the past few days.The SPCA was extremely rude when I asked for help and is not willing to make any kind of offer in assisting me with the healthcare of my pets that are now ill due to their negligence. read more

My boyfriend and I adopted our puppy Ollie from here on January 29th. We overheard that there was another dog there that had kennel cough (this dog was not kept separate from the other dogs) Kennel cough is extremely contagious and when not taken care of it can lead to other illnesses like pneumonia. Well we realized Ollie was coughing the day we took him home so we took him to the vet the next day, and it turned out Ollie had pneumonia. This means that Ollie was not properly taken care of and his illness was ignored. Ollie has now been in the hospital for 5 days and wont be coming home for at least another 2. The SPCA does provide us with insurance however we still have to pay up front and they will pay us the back up to 750 dollars. However Ollie's medical bills will be well over 1000 dollars. I am not writing this because I am mad and want the SPCA to pay for this I just want to get our story out. I feel like the SPCA needs to provide their animals with more care and attention so this does not happen. I noticed that other people have been through this so they are obviously not changing their ways. We love Ollie and wouldnt trade him for the world, but this could have been avoided if he was given the proper care he needed and deserved. I hope the SPCA reads this and changes their ways so more people do not have to go through this. read more

My wife and I recently visited the SPCA Suncoast and had a wonderful experience. When we first arrived at the shelter, we felt very welcomed as the gentleman at the front desk greeted us and directed us into the main dog kennel. The staff greeted us with a warm smile upon entering the kennel. It was very clean and seemed to be well organized. The staff was friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. After our visit with the dogs, we decided to visit the cats. The staff instantly greeted us as we walked into what they call the "Kitty Kabana". My wife and I were pleasantly surprised that it was so open and clean. The staff guided us into the different cat rooms and answered all our questions without hesitation. They seemed to be very in tune with all the cats and explained their different personalities. Although we did not end up adopting a pet during this visit, we had one the the best experiences and wanted to share. I would highly recommend stopping at the shelter and checking out all the great animals. read more
