Special Brews is one of mine and my husbands favorite spots to go for a fun, low-key time with SO MANY delicious beers from all over the country. The staff is super friendly and knowledgable. They're a great group to get recs from or just chat to about your day. We love craft beer and this is the spot to be. They have hundreds of beers to choose from in cans and bottles, plus about 20 taps. There are plenty of board games, well behaved dogs are allowed, and they have a bunch of TVs. These guys have 100% hit their stride over the last decade. They started out as a clubhouse for the adventurous beer drinker, and quickly built a huge following of beer lovers. All kinds come in--people just learning about beer, people who drink only a style or two, people who've tried every style 5 times, and everyone in between. It was originally going to be a bottle shop, with occasional shoppers stopping for a pint. 8+ years later, it's a flourishing neighborhood watering hole, with big rushes at the ends of Boeing shifts and pretty much anybody else's workday. There's no happy hour to speak of, but the post-work crowds get this place jumping. They have 15 taps pouring a wide variety of beers all the time, plus a beer engine always pouring a cask ale (usually from Seattle's Machine House Brewing, one of the most underrated breweries in the western U.S.). They will happily fill a 32-oz crowler (a recyclable aluminum can) of most of the non-cask taps anytime. There are 1,000+ bottles and cans on the shelves and in the coolers, too. They get many of the hotly sought-after limited can releases, and there are always good 4-packs and 6-packs stacked up around the store, along with hundreds of bottles that range from basics to rarities. If you want to chill anything down to crack in-store, there's a whirlpool chiller near the door. They stock cider, mead, and wine as well. Sparkling wine, canned wine, some hard-to-get wine; they have a diverse selection for oenophiles too (though just a fraction of their beer offerings). They offer a bunch of different pub snacks--peanuts, starchy snacks, pepperoni, charcuterie plates, even hot dogs. They also welcome outside food and delivered food. You can expect a wide variety of events here--tap takeovers, special beer releases, competitions between breweries. They get packed for Hawks games and some other sporting events. They've been my local watering hole for years, starting with being the best beer shop in town when they opened. Now they're a bustling hangout that has a better beer selection than ever. So this store/pub sell you beer that you can't drink it in the establishment but they won't tell you this. We bought canned beer and walked straight from the cash register to the table. Wasn't told by anyone we couldn't drink the beer. Then after 10 minutes get approached from the guy that sold us the beer and watched us walk to the table that we're not allowed to open our own cans they have too. Literally scolding us like we knew better. They have no sign and do not notify after purchase. The beer also was horrible. Real racist vibes!! Great tap house & bottle shop in the north end! I've been several times, and realized I've never shared a review! Special Brews has 16 beers on tap. Today's tap list only had a few IPAs available. The rest were higher ABV beers, sours and dark beers. I had the only Hazy IPA on tap, which came from Skookum. Solid beer. There weren't a good variation of styles on tap, so I had to peruse the bottle selection. They have a great selection of beers in the cases. Many styles to choose from. I selected a few cans from Matchless, which were delicious. You can open the cans there, but I'm pretty sure they charge a fee to open them (which is typical for any bottle shop). It's nice to have the bottle option when they don't have anything on tap to appeal to your styles. I would've been done after one pint if they didn't have bottles! read more

Amazing is the only way to sum up this place. They have a ton of bottles a lot of which I haven't seen at other bottle shops. They also have a pretty big tap list with a huge variety. They have everything from local beers to unique Belgian beers and even had a rodenbach on tap, a rare find. I had a delicious fruit beer on nitro which I have never had before and I had a sour stout which was also very unique and delicious. If I lived closer I would definitely hang out here. I've been coming in here for several years now with my husband and plenty of friends. It's my favorite spot around here to hang out with our gang. They've always had a really nice staff with lots of helpful and fun bartenders who make everyone feel welcome. You can ask questions about anything in the shop and learn a lot about beer. I joined the Mug Club a few years ago and drank 99 different beers--some amazing, most good, some unappetizing (I didn't like the English styles). I got a cool mug I can use any time I come in, but I tend to try different things so often that I usually don't have the same glass in front of me for long. They always throw fun events here, and we always have a great time when we come in. I can't wait to see what the next few years are like at the shop. read more

This is the closest beer store to my house. I like that it is also a place you can go to drink beer. On previous visits I was overwhelmed by the noise and the crowdedness, but I see that this has now doubled in size with much more seating and space. I can't wait to come in and drink some of the beer on tap. There is a large selection of beer to be purchased. I love being able to find things that are unusual and not available in the regular stores. Its also nice to be able to buy a single beer in case you get it home and find that it is not as great as it sounded. It is very easy to overspend though, specialty beers can be pricey. I also am not a dog person, but did find this dog to be polite and mostly stay out of my way. Plus they carry a beer my friend makes so that's pretty cool! read more

So walked in just today, first time ever in. Walked in with my husband and my adult son. Literally was never greeted or welcomed in. My husband spoke up and said "what's up" to the bartender. This guy just turned his head completely.. then my son was asked to move over while the same bartender went by him. He did say excuse me but we were so disappointed and unwelcomed. It felt totally uncomfortable. We are POC and never felt so out of place. Yes, it was 100% Caucasian inside but that's never bothered before because we've never been treated this way. They have a good selection of beers on tap and half the bar is a store that you can purchase other beers they may not have. There is an assortment of board games and video games to entertain if interested. The best part of this place is they offer FREE snacks! Chex mix, peanut butter stuffed pretzels! This place is incredible. They have lots of micro beers on tab and tons of beers in coolers and on the shelfs. You can buy a 1/2 size beer that way you can try more brews. My wife has a can of 14 hands, Hot to Trot red wine and loved it. They offer free snacks like pretzels and cracker type bar snacks. You can order a cold cut plate or a hot dog. The place really gets packed so arrive early and enjoy yourself. The staff knows brews well they are all beer connoisseurs. You can't find a better place to relax in a totally non bar type social environment. read more

What a great little find this place is! I live no where even close to this place- but happened to be in the area searching for a Kitchen Cabinet shop of all things.... I drove by and did a U-turn when I saw the sign. Very glad I did. They have a TON of very special bottled beers (hundreds of them)- and some really interesting brews on tap. There are maybe 15 taps at any given time- and the selection is great. I had a Breakside Brewing Toro Red- a wonderful Amber Ale made with chilies...... It was delicious. Special Brews has a chill vibe and feels a lot like Chuck's Hop Shop would feel were it one third the size (if you don't know about Chuck's and you're a beer nerd like me- Google it). Next time I'm in Lynnwood I will absolutely be stopping by again. This place is great. read more

The North end is lucky to have such a great beer spot up here! Thanks to Heidi P. for introducing me to Special Brews. I've been to Special Brews a handful of times and have enjoyed each experience. The owner is very friendly and helpful. 90% of the beers available I have never even heard of. It's fun to roam the aisles and pick out new beers to try. There are rotating taps at the store and if you're lucky you can snag a place to sit to enjoy your beer. Definitely worth a trip- even worth a trip from Seattle in my opinion. read more

ZOMGZOMGZOMG. I'm like a kid in a candy store. So much beer. Aahh, beer. Glorious, liquid golden deliciousness. And all types! Single bottles, big and small, single cans, six-packs, and limited edition boxed collections. You can tell from what they have chosen to showcase that they are really passionate about beer. They even had a pretty nice selection of Polish, Czech, and Russian beer. Yeah, I was instantly impressed with that part of the selection, because of the attention to the imports that Special Brews put into it's offerings. The store isn't as big as some of the other specialty brew stores I have visited, but their selection is nonetheless very impressive, and they definitely know what to keep stocked. They have a small bar where they rotate out 5 or 6 beers on tap. It is a well balanced combination of variety and simplicity to make it completely awesome. I'm jealous of the mugs on the wall, that belong to the regulars that get to come here all the time. I got to kick back with a few pints, and although it was crowded, one of the regulars moved seats so me and my companion could sit together. It is such an amazing little store with a welcoming, neighborhood feeling. I just adored it, and I will be returning. I'm glad I know there is a place in the north end where all of my beer fantasies will come true. read more

Special brews has a killler selection of beers that you probably won't find anywhere else. Also, they have a good amount of cool glassware. I got myself a duvell glass that was twice as much at Total Wine. Since originally opening, Special Brews has expanded and is now twice as large. Every Wednesday they have a guest brewery tasting event. Basically they have a ton of different beers from that brewery on tap. When I was there it was from Speakeasy Brewery. Probably my favorite feature of this place is still the "make your own 6 pack" option. There aren't ton of places that sell beer by the bottle, but out of all I've been to, the prices at SB are the lowest. If you are a beer lover and haven't visited Special Brews yet, get on it!! This is the kind of bottle shop you wish was in your neighborhood. But it's in mine. Therefore it is mine. So come on down to my bottle shop! I'll be glad to have you. Wonderful things about my establishment: 1. Open late-ish, until 10pm weekdays and 11pm Fri/Sat. 2. Not just for beer. There is also a Viking-friendly selection of mead and cider. 3. Well-maintained website. See what's just been stocked! 4. Every time I've come in so far, there have been homemade snacks. 5. Give them a week's notice and they can get you almost any keg you want. 6. On my first visit, my husband was like "What do you have from Southern Tier?" (NY brewery that makes fancy liquid dessert beer.) "Look directly behind you," they replied, "and there is a brand new box of 2XMAS, their seasonal winter variety." We drank it and it was amazing. In short, it would be hard to say anything too negative about a toy store for booze, but Special Brews goes above and beyond just selling a wide selection of beer. I love this place. All of the staff is so informative about all the beers and ciders. They have a nice big bar top with over 12 beers on tap. You can also pick out a beer in their store area and they'll open it and serve it to you for a small fee. They are always having fun events, like tap take overs, holiday themed events and this is the place to watch the Seahawks. All of the regulars bring in food and snacks and it ends up being a big potluck. So much fun! read more

If you're a beer nerd and you live north of Seattle, you pretty much owe it to yourself to show up here regularly. With 15 taps and hundreds of bottles to chose from, you really can't go wrong by showing up here. There is always going to be something new on tap or on the shelves every time. I recently attended a birthday party for a friend here. We watched a couple of football games on the big screen TVs. They were grilling brats in the parking lot, and had set up tables with food. We opened several bottles with no corkage fees. The staff is friendly and helpful. If I lived closer, I'd probably be a member of their mug club. but living in Kirkland, it's a long drive to get here. More's the pity. read more

Hot diggity damn I love this place... I just started a job in Lynnwood, and my first and most important priority was to find a good bottle shop. I checked out this place, and fairly quickly fell in love. First things first, let's talk about the bottle selection. Hard to estimate by eyeballing, but there is ballpark 1000 different beers there, roughly half of which are in fridges, which is a nice find. There is a good mix of styles, and you can find things from all over the country and world, though there is a particular emphasis on Northwest beers and Belgians. It's going to take me quite a while to work through their inventory... They have ~15 taps, and I've yet to be even remotely disinterested in the draught list. There is also something interesting on, usually several somethings. There are frequent takeovers and themes, like Triple IPA day or a Deschutes takeover (to name a couple recent ones). But was really makes the place is the staff and atmosphere. It's always fun and friendly, and conversation is never lacking. They REALLY know their stuff, and can answer any question you might have. I have zero complaints about this place. Since I also like it, I am willing to throw down 5 stars on it. Despite being located on Aurora/Hwy99/EvergreenWhateverEverettCallsIt, Special Brews is decidedly not at all skeezy. If you happen to be within a 10 mile radius and want a fantastic place to drink and hang out, you owe it to yourself to give this place a try. Their service is great, people are friendly, and nobody's been anything but helpful. They know beer, here. They're happy to help you pick out what you want, and they're usually right, even if you don't know what you like. Their selection is (generally) not super expensive, but IS super good. Did I mention the staff is amazing? Probably worth another mention. As an added bonus, they have a real good selection of bottled beers/ciders/stuff-that-isn't-liquor. read more

I've only been here twice so far and already love the place. This is probably one of the best bottle shops in the greater Seattle area. They have a huge selection crammed into a fairly small space and a full bar with plenty of chairs, TV and even a couch to relax and enjoy the beers on tap. In addition to the single bottles, they also have a larger selection of 6 packs than I normally see and a decent sized singles case where you can mix and match a sixer of your own; a great way to try new beers. The best part is definitely the staff who seem very genuine, knowledgeable and receptive to requests. They're the first bottle shop in the area to actually deliver on a request for Hacker Pschorr Weisse, my all-time favorite beer, which I've found hard to come by. This is a great shop to find your favorites and discover new brews you haven't tried yet. There are a lot of imports, and nice to easily browse by region, but there are plenty of good local brews as well. There is always a good seasonal selection, and the staff has been excellent every time I've been there. My only complaint is that it can be a little difficult to get in and out of there just due to the location on 99, but that's no fault of theirs. Just be prepared to have to make a U-Turn if you miss it the first time. read more
