I booked an appointment for a manicure on Wednesday July 3rd. Yesterday afternoon I left a message to cancel my appointment for Friday at 4pm the 5th of July. Apparently, since yesterday was a holiday, I failed to cancel my appointment within 24hrs. So, I was charged $38.00 dollars. Now, I only use SE's services in a pinch. However, tomorrow I'm headed back to Brooklyn. Thereafter,I'll book a manicure appointment with the top notch full service salon Reedchy on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn! SE is fine for GP. The manicurist are polite and on a scale of 1to 10. I would rate it 7.5. The salon is clean. However, they don't use new emory boards for each new customer. The atmosphere is welcoming. read more

The haircut I got from Debbie was the worst of my life: She put uneven, choppy layers that look terrible in my straight hair. I am so disappointed by the results that I'm going to another salon to get my hair fixed since I don't trust anyone at Special Effects to fix this disastrous haircut. I look like I've been attacked by a weed hacker and am actually embarrassed to go out in public unless I put my hair up in a bun. Right before coming to Greenport for a wedding, I got a haircut I was super unhappy with (a lot shorter than I asked for). I called here to make appointments to get my hair styled for the wedding events since I didn't know what to do with it myself, and the receptionist was super nice and helpful. Savannah was a gem and did such an incredible job styling my hair both times I came in. She was communicative throughout to make sure I was happy with the direction we were taking, and she pulled off a difficult style on my short hair. The salon is very cute and charming, too. Was exploring Greenport and saw this cute little place so went in to see if I could get a facial or massage, Unfortunately they were fully booked so decided to get a drink in the little salon. There was a blonde woman conducting interviews at the table next to me. I waited and waited and couldn't get anyone to serve me so eventually I got up, walked to the counter and said: Hello"! The lady at the table, who had been there all along, said 'someone will be with you'. Turns out she was the owner. She moved to another table to interview someone else. Never helped me. Eventually someone showed up and I got an ice tea and made some phone calls. After having left, I couldn't find my phone and realized I had used it there last. Walked in and once again couldn't find anyone. I finally saw the owner in a back room and asked if anyone had found my phone. She told me I wasn't allowed in the area. I told her I was sorry but that I had lost my phone and was frantically trying to find it. She told me to get out of the back room (laundry area). She refused to help me find my phone. I asked her if I could use her landline but she wouldn't let me. Never met anyone that rude. I eventually found my phone on their front porch. Would have been a heel of a lot easier if she would have let me use the landline so I could have heard it ring. Needless to say ... I will never go back. read more

I had a lovely experience there yesterday, made especially so because of Nancy, the young lady who tended to my manicure and pedicure...she was absolutely wonderful. Housed in a delightful old home that was beautifully restored, the place is a welcome counterpoint to the typical Asian nail experience. They have many other services, by the way, which helps the experience greatly. They even have a lovely tea salon. So even though I was there only for nails, I was able to take in the entire experience. Management was very accommodating to me, especially as I arrived late as a walk-in. They were gracious enough to stay open, and Nancy was kind to extend her day for me. The session itself was a joy. It was a bit old-fashioned, in a good way. A bucket of warm water with Epsom salts instead of some high-tech sonic tub out of The Jetsons. Their products, however, are modern and first-rate. And, best of all, Nancy was with me from start to finish - so much warmer and better than being "handed off" from station to station. If you are in or around Greenport, this is the only place you should consider. read more

We got our hair and make-up done at Special Effects. They did such a good job with both. I emailed Tori in a panic when my sister asked me to do her make-up for my wedding and asked if she could squeeze her in, and she couldn't have been nicer about it. She did my make-up too and made me comfortable asking for tiny adjustments that I wanted. Everyone's hair and make-up looked fantastic and lasted all night. Highly recommend!! read more

I am giving a low rating primarily because I found them to lack client service and be somewhat unprofessional. I booked Mother's Day services for 4 - my niece, sister and daughter. The person I made the appointments with failed to tell me they only had 2 manicurists. When we arrived, we waited 25 minutes for the 2nd person to show up. (No explanation). When she finally arrived, I realized there were only 2 and we wouldn't be able to do our mani/pedis concurrently. So I cancelled the second 2. So much for a nice spa morning! If the woman in charge had apologized even once I would not be writing this review. My message to management is set expectations- you should've told me when I booked it that you could only do 2 at a time. And when you screw up, a sincere apology goes a long way! read more

I am in love with this spa/ salon! Debbie and Victoria are absolute gems and made sure I was taken care of at all times. The decor is out of a fairytale, from the lattice aprons hanging to the antique teacups. I truly had an incredible and serene experience. The pedicure was wonderful. It was such a beautiful day out that they brought all the equipment down to the porch so I could enjoy the beautiful weather! Above and beyond. Did I mention the incredible selection of teas served with my pedi? Or the black currant scones with local grape jelly and clotted cream served on a silver platter? All of which were fantastic. Booked myself for a mani-pedi for my first (but not last!) visit to Special Effects. This stately home in Greenport has been transformed into a soothing Victorian tea room and lush salon. The receptionist Victoria, took me upstairs to the nail room and got me a refreshing cucumber water. My manicurist Nancy was efficient, friendly, and gives an amazing hand massage. This was a welcome respite from the daily grind and you are totally transformed in this hidden gem! Cannot wait to get my hair styled on my next visit. read more

I am giving a low rating because the Spa Pedicure was unlike any pedicure I have ever had. To me the spa pedicure was a regular pedicure at most nail salons. The polish job was the worst. Polish all over my cuticles and it didn't even last 1 week. Expensive for what the result was.The salon is beautiful but horrible pedicure!! read more
