    The Shepard mix we adopted!
    priya r.

Got our first pet - a 2.5 month old puppy here! The staff was really good and helpful! easy adoption process!

I got a voucher to get a stray cat spayed here Friday 4/26. They didn't provide me with ANY discharge instructions when releasing her back to me after her surgery, first red flag. Once we arrive back home I looked at her incision & it looked like it was barely glued shut but I live an hour away so I decided to just keep an eye on it over the weekend. I kept her in the crate overnight & released her in the morning (4/26). Over the weekend she was laying in my backyard, not really moving very much & I was keeping an eye on her incision & making sure she didnt lick at it but it still seemed like the incision was opening up more & more. I finally emailed them (4/28) & called the following Monday (4/29) & one of the employees told me over the phone to come in to get it fixed. They were about to close so I asked if I could go in Tuesday (4/30) & she said that was fine that I could walk in whenever. I went in Tuesday afternoon, keep in mind this place is an hour away. I get there & the lady at the front says they can not fix it, didn't even bother to look at the incision. She told me I would have to go to the place that provided me with the voucher, which makes no sense. How do you preform a surgery, do it wrong, & then cant fix YOUR mistakes?? She says I have to pay out of pocket & take her to the veterinarian myself to get it fixed. I would not recommend this place, it makes sense why they do free spays & neuters, because they half ass their job & then expect you to pay to fix what they did wrong.

Special Pals is a no-kill shelter for dogs and cats that is privately owned and not for profit charitable organization. We've adopted from Special Pals and always recommend it as an alternative to buying from a pet store to anyone we know. The animals here are always clean and well cared for and don't look miserable like you see in some shelters. I strongly recommend them if you are looking to adopt an animal. My daughter was so thrilled with the adoption of our new family member, she decided to give back to Special Pals by asking for shelter donations in lieu of presents for her birthday. We had a party for her and the guests brought cat litter, pet food, cleaning supplies, towels and checks made out to the shelter and we dropped it at the shelter a few days after her party. As animal lovers, we feel very strongly about the quality of this place and feel it is one of the best shelters in town and needs all the support it can get. So, when you're looking for a pet, please consider adoption first.

Rocco comfy in his forever home!

Absolutely wonderful, caring people who helped us adopt Rocco, our new 2 year-old Rottweiler housemate! Valerie was extra careful in helping us determine if Rocco was a good fit for us and most importantly for our 15 pound YorkiePoo, Buster. We brought Buster to visit several times to see how they interacted and Valerie was patient and very accommodating each time. We also did an off-leash play date with Rocco to see how he acted when not restrained. It's sad that shelters have such a tough time finding homes for adult dogs because everyone wants a puppy. I've had lots of puppies and compared to them, Rocco is a dream dog! He is calm and affectionate and we couldn't be happier...we think he's pretty happy too. Please visit Special Pals if you're considering a new pet and they will guide you in making the best choice for one of their awesome guests. Save a life, get a lifelong friend and companion!!!!

Special Pals was able to find 2 foster homes for 2 litters of cats my grandma found. This is truly an amazing place. The kittens will get spayed/neutered and microchipped and then get adopted by good people. I was very concerned I wouldn't be able to find a place for them and would have to take them to the pound or leave them with my well-intentioned grandmother. Every other place I contacted didn't even try to help. Instead, they just told me they either weren't accepting pets at this time due to COVID (which doesn't make sense bc animals don't carry the virus) or they were completely full & there was just nothing else they could do. Erin was awesome in responding (via email), answering all of my questions, and ensuring these babies would be cared for before their adoption by pairing them with awesome fostering homes. Extra shout out to the two fostering families that accepted the kittens! The kittens will be available for adoption in a few short weeks if anyone is interested. Here are some photos:

As part of a last ditch effort, we decided to check out CAP. Upon entering, I was shocked by how clean and bright the adoption facility was. To the right, cats. To the left, dogs. Ahead, furry critters like rabbits. A great organization system with a very open layout! As we began to peruse the variety of dogs, I noticed amenities such as ample hand sanitizer stations, visit rooms, and friendly volunteers. They utilize an easy to understand color system to indicate behaviors/training levels of the pets. All of the rooms/kennels looked very clean and the pets inside looked well cared for. Additionally, each pet had paperwork and surveys filled out to give you as much upfront information as possible. An adorable recent stray caught our eye out of the sea of dogs that were in the process of being adopted. We had to wait a little for a visit room to free up, but once a room was cleaned, a volunteer brought us in to meet the pup. As we interacted with the pup, the volunteer enthusiastically told us everything she could including how long the dog had been there, how the most recent walk went, and how the adoption process goes. Hearts stolen, we decided to adopt. The process was pretty straightforward with paperwork first then a meeting with an adoption counselor. It was pretty busy on the Sunday evening that we went, but still the wait was not that long. The counselor was very knowledgeable and we found that the very affordable adoption fee included the spay/neuter surgery, a full service vet visit, rabies vaccination, lots of literature, and a micro-chip! A great value!! Overall, a great organization and it is super heartwarming to see all of the adopted signs. Definitely a place to check out if you are looking for a furry family member.

We went to the show specifically so she could adopt a cat. The disrespect I received from HOPE staff was unreal. I have never been insulted or talked down to the way your staff talked to me. We were interested in adopting Maverick. We asked if he was an "Indoor or outdoor cat?" - out of curiosity and learning about him. Because we "dared" asked that, the entire staff immediately decided we wouldn't be able to offer him a good home (for whatever reason). This is even after my family member filled out an application and voiced that it's no worries, she would keep him inside. They talked down to us and were extremely ageist. They said she was too old to adopt on her own and would need a "back up" applicant. I offered to be that for her. I have a house and two cats of my own. I was then questioned about my age and being "too young." Mind you I'm 32 years old. They dodged us multiple times when we attempted to turn in the application and move forward with the adoption process. We probably wasted about 30 minutes just standing around waiting for an answer. Finally they send someone over to tell us that she's not approved to adopt Maverick. There's no way every single adoptee at that show is able to be fully vetted on their intentions with the cats. To be told that we're basically not capable of providing a cat a good home is laughable. Their staff was insufferable and extremely rude. There was no organization or communication. I do not recommend spending your time trying to adopt a pet from them.

They communicated clearly throughout the process, helped match us with the right pet for our family before we even adopted, and worked with us to find what they believed would be the fastest transport option. Unfortunately, the transport experience itself was the exact opposite. Communication from Spring Branch Rescue Transport was poor and often confusing. Updates were primarily provided through a Facebook group chat, which required scrolling through long message histories just to piece together where the transport was and when your pet might arrive. Even the dog owners--who make up the majority of their transports--were regularly asking for updates because information was so limited. One of the biggest frustrations was the transport schedule. The screenshots showing pickup and drop-off locations didn't include dates, and the stops weren't numbered. A simple numbered route with estimated dates or even the expected order of stops would have made it much easier for adopters to understand where the transport was and when to realistically expect their pet. Instead, it felt like you had to put your life on hold while waiting for updates. For cat owners, I would strongly recommend looking for another option. Our cat spent more than four days in the transport vehicle, surrounded by numerous other animals in what was undoubtedly a stressful environment. The uncertainty around arrival times also made planning nearly impossible. I watched other adopters in the group chat rearrange important milestone life events and even drive to different states because the delivery window kept vaguely changing or remained so broad. Looking back, I would have skipped the transport altogether. Flying to the rescue, renting a car, and driving home with your pet would have given us complete control over the schedule while likely making the trip far less stressful for the animal. While I appreciate the work involved in transporting rescue animals over long distances, the communication, organization, and scheduling experience left a lot to be desired. For anyone adopting from out of state--particularly a cat--I believe there are better options.
