I'm a cancer patient who is terrified at the possibility of metastasis to the eye socket and he was very kind in listening to my concerns and assured me he will do everything possible to catch anything early on. I was coming back from Battle Creek VA after a visit with the optometrist there and decided to stop at the Hiemstra store in Kalamazoo on my way home. I ordered a pair of glasses with no issues, but I requested that their store send my glasses to the Paw Paw Hiemstra location as it is closer to where I live. I was assured they would do that. About a week later, I received a call from the Kalamazoo location letting me know they were in at their store. Again, I requested that they be sent to the Paw Paw location. A few days later the Paw Paw location let me know the glasses were in. The next morning I arrived at the Paw Paw location and checked in to get them and then was asked to take a seat...and there I sat forever. I watched as the store staff seemed to be channeling the DMV. They farted around, talked, drank coffee, and seemed to do everything but help customers waiting. There was one person on staff helping a customer, while the other two optical staff seemed to have more important things to do. They finally got around to me, and I got out of there, breathing a sigh of relief as one might after a visit to the DMV. Do better Hiemstra!

He walked into the room, no introduction, no hello, he said "Why are you are?" Had not even read my chart. Very terse, no personal contact, what a joke of a doctor. Spent about 5 minutes with me. Only hope what he said was correct. No confidence in this practice.

Been going here for a few years…read more The good: They accept Medicaid. I've always felt like I got good service & an optometrist who's knowledgeable and personable. The not-so-good: She recommended a specific over-the-counter dry eye product that she also sells from among a whole line of OTC eye products in her office. They're expensive. I don't care for upselling like this in a medical professional's office. Some dermatologists do this too. That should not be. It presents a conflict of interest. Peddling optional products in a shoestore, beauty salon or car repair shop is no big deal because those provide things that have little to do with health and safety. Eye health (and dermatology) are different. I don't like my medical professionals to get commissions by recommending certain (pricey) products over others...that they just "happen" to sell in their offices. I bought a similar product at Walgreens for a fraction of the cost.

Was seen as an emergency today for an eye problem. The receptionist was very courteous and got me…read morein the same morning. After I checked in at the front desk I was seen immediately by Mark, the doctor's assistant. He took down information, assessed my problem, and dilated my eye. Dr Hicknor came in shortly and did the eye exam. He explained that I had a posterior vitreous detachment, but no damage to the retina. This is what was causing my eye floaters. Luckily got me no treatment is required. Will be seen for a follow up exam. I highly recommend this ophthalmologist

After my exam, I received the full run-down and even training for how to prepare for these glasses. Turns out my insurance doesnt pay for progressives so it was all a waste, and now I've been waiting for regular lined bifocals to come in for almost 2 weeks. everyone was very nice but at the end of the day I just need glasses and I still don't have them, even though I was led to believe the wait time was arbitrary and my glasses would likely come sooner.
