Cory came out and gave us an estimate and out of 4 bids he was the only one that didn't try and tack on services that we didn't need. I worked in residential HVAC for 10 years so I already knew what I needed done. I appreciated his honesty. A rare find these days. I had a mixed feeling with Specialty Insulation. We hired them to clean our crawlspace in September in 2019 because there was bad smell coming out from the vent. They replaced most of the stuff in crawl space and sealed holes in crawl space. They also found a broken pipe below our kitchen and fixed it. However I didn't get to the very end of the crawl space (where the leak is identified) to check the broken pipe after the work was done since it was kind of hard to get there and I trusted them. The bad smell did seem to disappear so I assume they did the right fix. I was satisfied by then. Then about 6 months later, the bad smell came back again. I called Specialty Insulation and asked them to take a look and see if it was the broken pipe again. They first sent the guy who fixed the pipe. He said there was no leak but identified some rodent activity. Then they sent another guy who cleaned the crawl space last time. He cleaned the crawl space at one side of the house, replaced the plastic and sealed some holes (we paid for it, not under some guarantee even if the project is within 1 year). However the bad smell still exists and we can even smell it at the other side of the house. I called specialty insulation again. Then they sent the same guy who fixed the pipe again. Still no luck. This time they did not even call me or texted me with what they found. I texted them and asked what the issue was but still they said nothing serious. I said I had my pest control company to take a look already and they said it must be something else because the smell was so strong. Then Jimmy said he would send someone or himself to take a look again. Then I was away from my house for a week and I did not hear anything from Jimmy. I texted him again and he said he would talk to the guy who came onsite. I haven't heard back from them till now. I had to get into the crawlspace by myself because we now have a new born at home and I don't want her to get sick. Here is what I find: waste water over the plastic under the kitchen area. I guess it was the same place where there was water leak last year . A large amount of waste water and the bad smell did come from it. I would recommend anyone to Specialty Insulation based on my personal experience. I purchased a 1915 Craftsman in Alki Beach in 2019. My light remodel turned into a full gut. Specialty Insulation was recommended by a GC friend of mine. They first removed all of the old insulation and vermin droppings, nests, etc. out of my attic. My house was 105 years of renovations others made by adding on to the house, removing / adding windows and doors, etc. My exterior walls were pretty much a patchwork of framing. Conventional insulation seemed like a nightmare for me to do and would leak air everywhere. When it came to reinsulate, I decided to inquire with Specialty about spray foam. Specialty responded immediately and sent a qualified salesman to sell me something I knew very little about. I wound up choosing to spend the extra money / time and foam my entire building envelope and basement / crawlspace / floor joists. The Owner of Specialty, Jimmie Williams, actually sprayed my whole house! I have worked in Customer Service for over 20 years and you do not see that often. This is some of the best money I spent on my old / new house, that no one other than me, will probably care about until I sell it. This product worked extremely well for me and sealed my house up like a Yeti cooler. The sound deadening quality is amazing in my small house. My house remains consistent in temperatures most all year with limited HVAC b/c of the spray foam. I could not afford to have my ADU spray foamed initially and did not get it quoted. A few months later, when I got to it, Jimmie worked with me on pricing as a return customer and a small job. Again, the quality of the product and workmanship was unparalleled. If you have ever considered removing / replacing your own conventional insulation and the outcome, I would suggest pricing out the spray foam. We ended up calling them based on the good Yelp reviews and a small project that we had that needed to be done fairly quickly. They were able to fit us in right before the holidays (Christmas of 2014). They were fixing damage to an area that was affected by flooding and reinforcing insulation in our attic. Given the estimates of the area affected by flooding was a lot higher than what we were initially thinking we opted to go with our insurance paying for the job. Our insurance estimate quoted about 15% lower than Jimmie's bid since they had assumed lower insulation in the flooded area. Even though the work had already been done with the higher insulation, Jimmie helped meet bridge the gap between what insurance was willing to pay and his bill so less out of pocket for us. do not use specialty insulation if you might have need for a call back to fix a problem or two!! we have called them multiple times to come uncover a roof vent they filled with foam. we have waited three months with no action or call back from jimmy even though pamela says she will see that he does it!! our garage is just as hot now as it was before the foam insulation. our experience with this company has been very negative and we advise everyone to avoid them! because they have to tie into the power box to run their foam sprayer, they replaced one of the circuits (the stove) and now when we have both ovens on the new circuit trips. we can't get them to come and fix their mistake with the power box either! just stay away from this lousy company!! read more

Pamela was very professional responding to communication through Yelp in a timely manner. Todd Symonds stopped by for inspection on time. He completed the inspection and explained to me that there are no signs for rodents. His recommendation is not to do anything regarding insulation. He recommended contacting a licensed pest control company if I want to install traps. Be sure to closely check whatever estimate Specialty Insulation gives you, because it might not include what you asked for -- like, oh, say, INSULATION. I figured that when I asked for an estimate for rodent eradication, removal of old insulation, and replacing it with new insulation, that I'd get an estimate for what I asked for. I mean, it says "Specialty Insulation" right there on the truck. But after the two SI guys spent less than three hours in my basement -- costing me over $600/hour -- and then called up to say "we're done" I thought, "wait...how?" When I went downstairs, all they had done was remove the old insulation and clean up the major mess the rats left. I'm left with no new insulation in my basement, and a colder house. I spent most of last weekend taking stuff out of the basement and putting it under tarps out on the lawn where it's been pummeled by rain and wind, and now it has to stay out there while I figure out a way to get my basement insulated. What a waste. Yes, I know very well that I should have checked the estimate more closely. But, I really didn't think I needed to. Good grief, when I ask for eradication, removal *and* replacement, I expect it all to be in the estimate. It just baffles me: this is a company that's literally in the business of "Insulation" and yet the estimator didn't think that maybe a client getting insulation taken out, wants new insulation put back in. If he didn't know, he should have asked. They would have made more money. The office manager told me they "do jobs all the time" where all they do is eradication and clean up. That's immaterial to me. When I'm calling a place called Specialty Insulation, and I ask for new insulation, I expect them to provide an estimate that includes new insulation, unless requested otherwise. I cannot recommend this company because I got three estimates, all from highly regarded firms, on my attic insulation/potential rodent activity and the other two told me that my insulation was fine (not spectacular by today's new R rating standards) and that I just needed to trim back the foliage around my roof line. Jimmy told me I needed to completely replace all of my attic insulation and do serious rodent proofing, for $6000. Perhaps it was the $$ value of my home that spurred this type of worst case scenario estimate. I guess we'll never know. If so, it certainly wasn't the first time someone has tried that tactic. Jimmy works very hard to come across as professional and is very communicative, so that's why it's 2 stars vs 1. Update: I see a response post trying to tell you that I'm a competitor... His wasn't the lowest quote, but I felt it was the most realistic and his knowledge and willingness to come out and look himself, and answer my questions, pushed me towards them. Specialty insulation did a good job. Was it perfect? No, they missed a spot or two, but as I discovered later they were correct when they said the missed spots didn't matter. There was another area that didn't get insulated, and his crew didn't tell me about, but it was an odd part of the house where a non-obvious, inaccessible area had no backing wall and couldn't be filled the same as the other walls. All that said, I don't expect miracles - Specialty insulation did a good job with what I expected of them, and it has made a noticeable difference in the garage. I will call them first when I am ready to tackle the next improvements to my insulation. read more

Specialty insulation did a great job at a reasonable price. I used them to add insulation to my attic. They were quick and after taking a peek, it looked really nice up there. One star off because there seemed to be a little disconnect between the people doing the work and the guy that came and gave me the quote. Our hatch to the attic previously had a broken piece, and I was under the impression they were going to replace it, but it was just reattached somehow, so it still looks like there is a crack in it. Not a big deal because it works. Second, we had some birds entering our attic, and the quoter wrote down that we'd have the soffits covered from the exterior, but they did it from the interior. This gives birds the opportunity to sit on the edge and break through again, which would be upsetting. As long as that doesn't happen, I'm happy with the job they did. My YELP rating for Specialty Insulation is 5 stars, and it says "Woohoo! As Good As It Gets!" and that is EXACTLY what Specialty Insulation is! I had just purchased a 1933 farm house that was infested with disgusting 80 year old insulation in the attic, crawl space, guest house, etc. It was one of the first (and most important) parts of my remodel and demolition project to get done, because electrical, framing, etc. could not start until all the old, mice infested insulation was removed. The first company I had out sent a sales rep that was cocky, measured my square footage wrong- by 500 square feet- and gave me a bid that was ridiculously high. I went with the second company that came out with a reasonable bid and promises that they could be out the next day and clear the attic and crawl space, "no problem". So the next day, the cleaning crew showed up at 2:00 (not the 9:00 as promised), ate lunch in my yard, looked at the crawl space and said it was too small to get access to, and then when they finally went up to the attic they said it was too hot up there and they would have to come back in 3 days. WHAT?!! So that is when I searched again and luckily came across Jimmy and Specialty Insulation. Jimmy came out the same day to look at my house and instantly I knew I was finally dealing with a competent professional. He agreed to match the previous company's quote, and assured me that both the attic and crawl space would be taken care of. The very next day, Jimmy & his crew were at my house and within the first hour, the crawl space that was "impossible" to access was cleaned, disinfected and done. I was very impressed with the quality of work and the customer service that Specialty Insulation provided. They removed all existing attic insulation and replaced with new R-49 and also added insulation R-38 in the attic above our garage. They also put in new baffles for our garage to improve air flow since we did not have any prior. Even though I'm a lawyer, I'm a DIY kind of guy. I've been up in our attic and down in our crawl space numerous times for various reasons and problems. So I know what everything looks like above and below our house. The previous owners had a rat problem which they took care of, but they never dealt with the evidence of a rat problem (dead rats, traps, poison packets, rat poop, maple seeds, shredded insulation, exposed ducts, etc.). I've had several people tell me we needed to have all the insulation removed from the attic and the crawl, get it all cleaned out, and then add all new insulation. Several years ago at our first house, I dealt with another local crawl cleaning company who barely met my minimum expectations - and they seemed to be fine with that. So I had Jimmie come over this time. Together we covered just about every square foot of our attic and crawl. He pointed out things to me that a previous contractor had done that wasn't done right, told me how it should have been done, and told me WHY it was important to get it fixed properly. And that was just one of many things he pointed out to me. But I never got the impression that it was done to raise the cost of the job. It was more like he's one of those neighbors you might call who knows a lot about home construction who can come over and tell you why something's not working right and what needs to be done about it. Jimmie's estimate wasn't the cheapest, and it wasn't the costliest. But I wasn't looking for the cheapest (I've already experienced them). When he left after his inspection, I knew that Jimmie knew what he was doing and that he would ensure that everything would be done right. So I scheduled out a couple days for this job. Jimmie and his crew arrived on time. He introduced to me to his crew chief and other workers (I've never met a more cheerful looking crew chief). At every stage I was invited to come up and have a look, or come down and see what they'd done. These guys had nothing to hide and were obviously very proud of their work and work ethic. As for the finished product, I've never seen a more beautiful attic, and never seen a more orderly and clean crawl space. My roommates and I had a giant mutant rat that had died in our ceiIing. The smell was a cross between a dumpster full of baby vomit and my ex girlfriends studio apartment (I still hate you Jennifer but call me sometime ;) ). I was shocked by Jimmie's comments about my previous review. First of all, I never asked him to do the work for half price. I made 2 phone calls with him: every time I mentioned that I never wanted him to beat the price that I got - what I wanted was a good service with a reasonable price. After giving 10% discount, his price was still about 20% higher than the bids from other companies. For cleaning the crawlspace, he offered at about $1700 (after 10% discount), but what I got from other professional companies were from 1200 to 1400. The reason I mentioned a handyman was because that guy came to my house and did other services, and I chatted with him and he was willing to clean the crawlspace at $700. When I tried to negotiated the price with Jimmie, I just wanted to explain that what he asked was overpricing, and what I asked for was $4500 in total (and what Jimmies offered was about $4900 including screening roof vents). So what I wanted was to get another $400 discount instead "half price"! For the roof vents: in Jimmie's bid, he asked $475 for "Rodent Proofing - Install 1/4" galvanized screen, metal flashing and concrete to seal all rodent entry points in crawl space and attic". All other inspectors told me that my attic was in great condition (got new roof a couple months ago) and no work required - the insulation was good, and no entries that rodents could get in with new roof. And one guy told me that the vents were the most places that rodents could get in. Since in Jimmie's bid, he mentioned he would seal the rodent entries in attic, then I asked him if the screening vents were included in $475 - then he said no, and he would charge $350 for it. Then I really don't understand what he would seal in my attic in his original bid? As I mentioned in my previous review, he asked about $5000 for attic work, but no one else from other companies told me that I need to do it. One company with good yelp reviews did the crawlspace work for me - they did a great job and I am very happy about it. And I paid about 20% less. Finally, I would like to mention that, I would not do any updates for my reviews even if Jimmie would comment more later on. My crawlspace project is done, it is over. read more

His guys did a great job on my crawling space. It's now clean and fresh. The mice holes from which mice came in are sealed (no mice so far). One of his guys injured his knee and Jimmy took care of him as the responsible company owner he is. I am not sure if the price for the job was fair since I did not inquiry on other bids but my crawling space is challenging and was in bad shape. I'd recommend his services to others. Jimmie and his assistant Alisio did a great job in rodent proofing my house. For about two months now I have been noticing mouse droppings around the house and garage. We set up traps but yet it seemed like the mice were coming back. Instead of calling a exterminator, my husband was referred to Specialty Insulation. Jimmie came over and inspected my crawl space and garage and sited areas where the rodents were getting in. After 3 days his assistant came over and sealed up the holes in my garage and crawl space to keep the rodents out. Jimmie assured me that the mice had not got to my insulation and that putting up traps all the time can catch them but you need to seal up holes in your house to prevent them from coming in. I got three quotes for replacing the 50-year old, subpar insullation in my attic and adding insulation to and replacing the vapor barrier in my crawlspace. SI's quote was right in the middle, cost-wise, but the service was tops. Jimmy gave me a quote, inspected for rodents and other issues, and sent his crew to do the job. The guys were polite, clean, on-time, and worked tirelessly all day (in 90 degree weather - it was way hotter in the attic too, let me tell you). I noticed an immediate improvement in the house. These guys did a great job. Jimmie is a very friendly and knowledgeable guy. His crew chief was very professional, taking us through the work at the end of each day (about a 2.5 day job). When they were running a couple minutes late one morning, they called to let us know. At the end of the job, they spent quite a bit of time making sure everything was very well cleaned up around the house. Knowing we had squirrels and birds and other rodents running through our attic and crawlspace, we were very concerned about animal exclusion. We didn't want to end up with damage to our new insulation. Looking around the house, I can see they worked to close up literally hundreds of small holes and spaces. We haven't seen or heard any signs of life inside our attic yet. With a 5 year guarantee for animal exclusion, we feel pretty good about keeping the critters out. Oh yeah, and the insulation itself has made a noticeable difference -- much warmer and we're adjusting the heater and fireplace to accommodate. Jimmy and his crew were timely, fairly clean and professional. Although we had a difference of opinion on what constitutes "dense-packed" blown-in cellulose insulation, Jimmy was always willing to work with us and try to solve the issues with dense-packing existing interior walls and ceilings that were not previously insulated.
