New favorite fried chicken place!! This little spot is kind of in the middle of no where but their chicken is fresh and fried to perfection! I love the crisp skin and the tender chicken meat!!! You can tell their chicken is not frozen by the tenderness and flavor of the chicken My family and I got the whole chicken (8 pieces total) with fries, onion rings, and cole slaw. The chicken pieces are not huge but not too small either. The meal was just the right amount for us as we wanted to go somewhere for dessert after. The sides are not the greatest but not bad either. Finally got a chance to try Speck's Drive In! I was very pleased! The chicken was tender and juicy. It might have been a bit small...I've seen bigger breasts in my time, but it was quite tasty and came with fries, a roll, and a side for under 7 bucks...I got the mac and cheese on the side which was creamy and delicious... The food was served almost immediately, meaning it was sitting under a hot light somewhere...but it was still warm and juicy when I got back to the office 10 minutes later...the fries were pretty good too, crinkle fries as others have noted. They include a little baggie with a fork, wet nap, salt, and ketchup with your order...I always appreciate a wet nap after a meal! I like the decour...it seems almost stuck in time...it did NOT seem dirty to me as others have mentioned...could probably use a little makeover, but i wasn't worried about the cleanliness. They do have shakes, but they aren't what I'd call milkshakes...it certainly won't bring the boys to the yard....milkshakes are hand dipped iced cream and milk...Speck's has a shake machine that seems to have vanilla soft serve and the ability to add 11 flavors to it...I got the chocolate, and it was passable, but not what i drool over when I think Milkshake...and nothing I'd miss when I go back... Right now, this restaurant is take out ONLY. We ordered the 8 piece chicken with sides of coleslaw and macaroni and cheese. The chicken was moist and delicious--including the breast which is usually dry. The coleslaw had a sweet taste to it and the macaroni and cheese was creamy. Same as it ever was! Broasted chicken you can depend on. What is broasting you ask? It's pressure frying with a lot less fat. Specks has been a staple in this area for as long as I can remember. The coleslaw is great here and don't forget a slice of shoo-fly pie. I love that the interior is a flash back from the simpler days. Specks is an institution in our area. Amazing chicken obviously- family owned and appreciated. However tonight I experienced something I've never really seen before there. Friday night . Line out the door. Three people ahead of me decided to leave. Why? Two young people (two) were struggling to run the register ( taking orders). Again I'll say this is unusual .... And I was patient. But when I finally did get my chicken ( taking out). I noticed that the selection I asked for was not was put in the box . So I asked for the manager - dark hair - I've seen before assuming he is the manager etc - working the grille. He rolled his eyes at me as I explained about the chicken and asked if maybe the kids were struggling etc. He spoke loudly and basically said I was insulting them ( last thing I was doing). Look - if your customers concerns mean nothing to you .... If you take the opportunity to not only NOT address their concern, but use it as a reason to cause a scene - there's something wrong. Speck family : address this . It's got to be hard keeping workers going etc ... but don't throw the baby out with bath water. Courtesy to your customers concerns ( especially when they are not being rude about not getting what they ordered) can't go away. read more

Look, if you're nostalgic for a 70s style burger shack, this is the place. The burgers, shakes, chicken and fries are absolutely awesome. The decor takes you back. There are no carhops it drive thru, but that's ok. There are flavor pumps for drinks even. I always like the cheeseburgers but they are small. Only drawback is adult world is next door. It spoils the ambience a tad but not too much. Don't let it stop you from visiting Ok one other thing. The booths are fixed. Meaning if you are a larger person, you will get wedged. Wish we had a better experience, as it looked promising. We should have tried the burgers, which another reviewer said were under-rated (while the chicken is over-rated). The chicken we ate was 3-star at best. In our experience, the chicken was fried in oil that must have had something scalded or burnt in it, because while the chicken itself wasn't visibly burnt, the taste was overwhelmingly bitter and burnt to me. Potato salad was good though. That was the highlight of the experience, but the chicken was supposed to be the star so potato salad was small consolation. Had been a customer for decades, however, my last visit a few months ago was terrible. I stopped after a 12 hour shift to pick up dinner- chicken dinner for my husband and a cheese steak hoagie to go.4 young ppl behind the counter control and better managerial skill training. Too bad, the chicken, coleslaw and potato salad are good, but not worth the health risk and attitude at this point. I have eaten here my whole life, but the last couple of months, this place has gone down hill. Chicken is over cooked and not flavorful. Mashed potatoes are def instant, like paste. Beans are from a can. Every time they forget to put something in the bag for us, like a side or honey for the rolls. They don't even put napkins in the to-go bags anymore. I keep wanting to give this place a second chance , but I am let down every time. We will not be going back anytime soon. Such a shame! read more

For years it was a real treat to eat at or order from Specks. My wife even didn't mind and she is a picky eater. Yesterday I ordered 2 beasts, 4 legs, and 4 thighs. They jammed all 10 pieces in 1 box. Some had the skin missing or hanging off. Other pieces had no skin (the best part IMHO) at all. Some pieces were cold... and I waited about 20 minutes to get my take out order. If the fries tasted like anything it was cardboard. There were 7 people working all running around like chickens with their heads cut off which is fitting for a fried chicken joint. I would give 1 star but maybe they were having a bad day plus I still have fond memories from the past. Corn fritters... 5 stars! read more

I just returned to the area after many decades being away. I last ate at Speck's in the early 1980's. I always remembered the broasted chicken as being excellent. Now almost 40 years later and the place looks very much like I remembered it. The broasted chicken is still excellent, and am planning a return visit in a few days. read more

I haven't had fried chicken this good ever. Maybe in New Orleans a while back but this place is comfort food heaven. Baked beans cole slaw the works. I am handicapped and the extremely nice gentleman who I later found out was running the register, saw me arrive. He came outside and led me into the side door because it was closer to where I parked. He also walked me outside again and put the bags of food in my car. I wish I caught his name. Medium length hair and very nice.
