This valley gem was on my bucket list and I am so happy I got to experience it for my birthday weekend! I was in awe with how many local vendors this store has stocked (salsas, confectionery, seasonings, etc.) and how beautifully the products were stocked. I indulged in my first-ever date shake! Very smooth, creamy and just the right amount of natural-flavor sweet! Only issue can be parking but we lucked out! Another fabulous visit here this year. This has become a bit of a tradition, much like pumpkin spice lattes when the weather changes. Fall visits to Sphinx Date Co is a must for me, because I'm crazy about the Black Sphinx dates! Don't get me wrong, they have a lot of other great stuff too, but those dates are my favorites! I was excited to see Wild Tonic sold here. I love how they support Arizona made products! Additionally I got some Papaya spears with very few additives (wish they had cubes also) for my granola. This year I decided to try fresh Yellow Barhi dates and they were such a fun experience (I would do it again next year). They're crunchy and crisp like an apple, but also fairly sweet (not quite as sweet as a dried date though). If you get a chance, grab a bag! Their Large Grade Medjool are the nicest I've ever seen. The Khalasa has quickly become a favorite along with the Black Sphinx. The Kustawi was something new for me and good also! So glad we have such a special unique gem in Scottsdale. read more

My wife and I like to walk around the neighborhoods we travel to and so while walking to the grocery store to get some items, we walked by this place and it caught our eye (we loved the logo and the name was intriguing). I wasn't sure what to expect from a date store but there was a good assortment of dried goods, specialty food, and local eats available to browse through. I was eyeing cactus pear candy the whole time while I was here and they had big containers of the jellies that looked good. We also got some dried mango for our kiddos and a couple other things. Prices were very good and we knew that the stuff on the shelf was very fresh and hadn't been sitting in some back room in a tourist trap. I watched a lady order a date shake to see what that was all about. Basically a lot of vanilla ice cream and some dates thrown in for good measure. Absolutely blown away by this boutique date shop. We stumbled upon it while on vacation. One of the owners welcomed us in and let us know she was there to answer any questions we might have. We looked around on our own for a while, enjoying browsing the variety of local products including an impressive offering of local wildflower honey, novelty candies, spiced chocolate almonds and of course out of this world dates! The owner gave us samples of the local date offerings. The famous Sphinx date hands down was our favorite. We bought a few of their beautifully wrapped hand made stuffed date sets for gifts, as well as a few souvenirs and candies. They had just moved to a new location which we thought was very nice. The owners were so nice and friendly and so knowledgable about dates. I will come back next time I am in Arizona and have already told others about this special and unique place. read more

I can't say enough good things about this precious little store in Scottsdale. I was looking for gifts to give to friends in the East Coast that are unique to Arizona, so I wandered into this quaint little shop. We had some dates that were butterscotch-y and others that were caramel-y as well as the typical medjool dates. What a find! I've been a fan of Shields in California for*ever* but don't make it out there (off the freeway so far!) when traveling through on my way to LA. I miss those date shakes! So nice to find the Sphinx AND their Arizona hybrid date: The Black Sphinx. Just as wonderful as my favorite, the Medjool, but not as super sweet. Perfect. So many things to look at, all the items are an Arizona thing: Prickly Pear everything and lots of hot sauce. Of course, I had a date shake. Even better than I remembered from Sheilds and it's so much closer to home. You have to pay attention when looking for the Sphinx Date Co. or you'll miss it. Even though it stands out (once you spot it) you have to look (and if you're going south on Scottsdale, you have to do a U-Turn, so be careful!) I sent a couple of pounds of dates to family in California and Washington, the staff there was able to handle it on the spot, they're all dialed in with the carriers, so figuring shipping was fast. I went in for a birthday gift and was pleasantly surprised! Not only were the prices really good, but the customer service was even better. The saleswoman at the time helped me pick a gift, have me a sample of both a date and a hot sauce, and even wrapped it up nicely. They have a solid selection of date and other dried local fruits along with a selection is hot sauces, teas, desserts, and even wine (the most of the wine was a bit on the pricey side). The shop also was very clean, well lit, and very organized. Every product had a distinct placement and the floor inside was nice. I would definitely stop in again for both gifts and a sweet, not too unhealthy of a snack. This is always a MUST GO destination for us when visiting Scottsdale. We first discovered them 4 years ago at the Saturday farmers market. The next year we looked for them, but they were not their.
