So, this place was fun. And if I start with describing the experience before the food, it's because this was an EXPERIENCE. The food was tasty and interesting but took a second place to a really fun evening with friends over a spicy hotpot. It's truly been years since I last did this. The first time, with foodies from Malaysia and Hong Kong, I learned about the 'Ring of Fire' phenomenon that some people experience after eating really spicy food. I'm not going into details (although I don't suffer from this). However, with three choices of spice level, we gamely went for the medium-level and ... oh, we failed, reader. Yes, we failed. It was too spicy for us, though we tried valiantly. So, what else can I say? The place is beautiful and odd. There is a robot that goes around the restaurant at the end of the meal serving mints though we didn't manage to get it to stop for us. The decor is really quite striking. So it's a fun atmosphere to eat in. It would be a great place to come with a large group of people, or a big party! Even with the guidance on the menu, we weren't quite sure of the best way to eat everything. The bowls of stuff to make your own sauce look beautiful and delicious but I think I should have gotten a little more guidance or studied up! We chose a whole bunch of random stuff to put in the hotpots. The corn was weird. The various meats were delicious. The mushrooms also delicious. We lost track of how long we were supposed to cook things and just dumped things in randomly. We thought the bear made out of stock was gorgeous. We watched as it slowly disintegrated into bear-nothingness. We couldn't bring ourselves to order the Lady Gaga in the meat dress dish. Because that would have been just too weird. And there was a vegetarian with us (by the way, it's a fine choice for the vegetarians in your life with lots of veggie choices and broths). But really, we didn't pay much attention. The not spicy vegetarian soup was fine, though deemed not that interesting. The spicy soup was delicious, though as I said too spicy. I ordered some more unusual dishes like winter melon and bean curd knots, I think we tried pumpkin too, but it was all a scramble really as we'd lose the food at the bottom of the pot and dig it out, or we cooked it too long and it fell apart, and we tried not to eat it while it was too hot, and not to eat too much of the spicy bits. We were amused by the aprons, which did prevent food disasters, and we also loved that they brought the two of us with glasses little special glass cleaning cloths. Magic! I'm wondering next time whether I might suggest ordering the individual pots, although the communal one (as you can see, divided into two) was pretty fun. And while I'm pretty adventurous, I did kind of feel that going along with a hotpot expert (or someone who has more experience than we did) could have been helpful. But what a night! I think I drank a little too much beer (following some wine) to deal with the spice. If you're still with me: here's my recommendation. If you've never tried a hotpot before, you are MISSING OUT. Get thee to a hotpot restaurant, and why not Spice World! It's bright, cool, and tasty. You're guaranteed to have a great time.

It was very nice inside and receives high praise on Google Reviews. We shared the Mongolian Lamb. It was fabulous. We don't have any Mongolian Lamb in the Chinese restaurants near us in Arizona. Very tasty Mongolian sauce and the lamb was very tender. Rice doesn't come with the entree's here, but a small bowl was only $4 AUD. If we would be in Sydney longer, we would go back.

The best part of our meal was the bottled beer. The Mongolian beef was not cooked well, it was just soft and soggy in its sauce, which was overly sweet. It came out on a fajita platter sizzling, so truly impressive that it turned out as mushy as it did. There was a lot of potential for that dish to taste better. The stir fried noodles tasted like they had been cooked well at one point, but then frozen, reheated, and rinsed with water to remove any potential flavor that once existed. Despite the restaurant being mostly empty when we arrived, we were seated right in between two other occupied tables, which made it feel like we were all at one big dinner together instead of on our own separate date nights. The people working were very nice - just wish the food was better! This meal was one of our first meals in Sydney and made us really worried that all of our meals here would be overpriced and tasteless - thankfully, there are better options out there.

Our waitress was a super disappointed we came in right at opening: 9am and was muttering how inconvenient it was we decided to eat so early to her coworker in Cantonese not knowing we could understand her. We are used to big crowds and long lines by opening at our dim sum places so we came in early to beat the crowd. Kitchen took almost 45 mins to prepare our beef noodles and it was a total disappointment. Kitchen is super slow and did not have anything other than a few items by opening. We wanted egg custard to finish our meal and was informed it would take another hour before they would be ready. I guess things are cooked fresh on the day which is good but shouldn't it all be ready by the time you open? The little old ladies pushing the cart were very nice and polite. Ambiance is your typical big city Chinese place.

Came Sunday at 9:30, already a quarter full. I had har- gow, chicken feet, trip, lotus leaf sticky rice (lo mai gai). The chicken feet were perfect and the har-gow full and plumb with shrimp. I like the way they do the lo mai gai. Smaller portions, devided between 3 wrappers instead of the usual 2. So you get more filling to rice ratio. Plus they wrap the race in parchment paper before wrapping in the lotus leaf, so it's much easier to peel apart. The trip was a little disappointing however. The flavor was very good but good, but should have been cooked a bit longer, as some of the pieces were still quite chewy. I patiently waited for the egg custard to come out, as they were still baking them. Worth the wait, they were perfect! Light flaky crust, and perfectly light and tender egg custard. Plus, they were the "normal" palm size tart...not those mini ones, that many places switched to, to save money. Honestly, these were the best I have had anywhere! As I was leaving at 10:45, the place was buzzing and almost full. They were also bringing out many more items, such as stuffed bell pepper (with shrimp) and stuffed egg plant (with pork). They also had special carts that would make stir fry noodles or steamed vegy at your table. Makes it feel like Hong Kong, which was the last place I saw these, in the early '90s.

The fish was light and delicate with a side of wasabi mayo to dip! A must order if it is on the menu. The Wagyu massaman beef was tasty and tender. The only dish we thought wasn't up to scratch was the Masterstock pork belly, it was over done and very tough. But the Morten Bay bugs and the Sichuan chilli chicken wings was a winner! The dessert menu had some Asian choices, but I loved the hokey pokey parfait with charred Nashi pear, honeycomb pieces and finger limes. Delicious and yummy! The yuzu and lime creme brûlée with fennel soil and passionfruit was refreshing and light. To top off the meal, I finished with a 2017 Marian botrytis semillon. I highly recommend checking out this place and I'll likely be back because everything else on the menu was so intriguing.

That alone was irritating, but what made it worse was the complete lack of communication between the host and waitstaff. I was later told one of the waitresses assumed I was waiting for a to-go order instead of simply asking me, which is incredibly frustrating and avoidable. Even after the confusion, I was still seated right next to the door instead of being properly placed inside the restaurant, which only added to the feeling of being brushed off and poorly handled. What made the situation stand out even more was how little accountability there seemed to be. The host and one waitress both apologized, and I was given a discount on my egg rolls, but no manager or anyone in a higher position came over to address the issue. I was even told the owner was present, and it was obvious he was aware of what happened, yet he never came over to acknowledge it or say anything. That part was honestly the most disappointing. To be fair, the food itself was excellent -- flavorful, hot, and served quickly -- but the poor service, lack of communication, and overall frustration of the experience overshadowed what could have otherwise been a great meal.
