The first thing that must be said about spikes is the their alcohol selection is amazing. The second thing that has to be said is that the staff is remarkably helpful. If you are a whiskey or beer fan, their selection is unparalleled. If you enjoy wine or other fine liquors you want be hard up either, there's plenty of selection in all areas. Better yet they have the widest selection of ciders in town. Kevin on many occasions has been more than willing to take as much as twenty minutes helping me select just the right bottle of scotch, discussing flavor profiles, making beer suggestions etc etc. In my opinion if you want to try something new, or get great prices on what you know you already love, spikes is clearly the place to go. read more

Today was my first visit to Spike's, as they had been closed due to a fire for nine months last year (they re-opened in December, 2012). I spoke at length to Kevin, the proprietor, and was impressed with his customer service and knowledge. When I asked about the availability of a specific hard-to-find beer, he immediately texted his distributor to see if it was available. But just as impressive was the beer selection. Until now, the best place in Chico to get a wide selection of microbrews was the Mangrove Bottle Shop. But Spike's new, post-fire beer selection is by far the best in town now, and is probably double the size of MBS. As a long-time microbrew beer aficionado, it is difficult for me to find beers that I have not tried. But Spike's Bottle Shop carried at least a dozen beers that I have never tasted before. Long story short: if you love good beer, this is the place to get it! I will say that the Single Malt Scotch selection was only slightly better than average, but they will be adding a number of high quality 18 year-old scotches in the coming months. All in all, one of the best liquor stores I have been in. read more

I was impressed with the selection..came late and the staff were very helpful. Was looking for a specific beer and after an unsuccessful attempt at Trader Joe's, an employee said he had a friend who owned a store that provided what we were looking for. He told us to come here. Another plus is it is right by our house. I was looking around town for a beer I was not able to find anywhere! Hands down the best. I have a kegerator and Kevin always bends over backwards to make sure I always have a great keg of some pretty hard to source beers. The bottle selection is massive, and if you are in to Goses/sours/lambics, this is the best selection I've ever seen. Everyone knows that Spike's is world renowned for their incredible selection of Hot Dog Buns. I've never understood why they don't sell actual weenies but the selection of buns is beyond compare. What many people don't realize is that Spike's also has a massive craft beer selection, which almost overshadows the bun selection. Seriously, there may not be a store in the country with more varieties of beer than Spike's. Last I heard I think they were approaching 2,000 different varieties, which is insane (especially considering the relatively short shelf life of many beers). This isn't a liquor store to run in and out of quickly, because the selection is so overwhelming that you'll want to spend some time browsing. You'll have a couple great selections in your hand, then come across something insane that you've only heard about but never tried. Making an educated choice on what to buy can be tricky, but the owner Kevin will answer just about any question you have and seems to have tried many of these. No question that this is the best store in Chico, but is there even a better store anywhere? read more
