So far, so not good. I missed a call when someone was en route to my place. The number is blocked and there was no callback in the voicemail. So he called Spire to cancel the appointment without trying to contact me again, or, it seems, showing up to the address/knocking... I called Spire and was told I was being put on a brief hold. For over ten minutes I waited. Then the agent hung up on me and didn't try to call me back. I called again and after I waited through all the prompts so I could press 0, a more competent agent had the answer for me in under 2 minutes. I disliked the answer: nope, there is no way to contact your service person. You're at our mercy: we'll come sometime today, but now it's an all-day appointment. It could be anywhere from now until midnight. Consider joining the 21st century and getting company cell phones and using text alerts, Spire. I'm so sorry my new appointment is gas. My bill is $35 even in the months I don't cook or use heat. What a waste. read more

These guys are the worse. They told my mother who is 81 that they would be out to repair her yard from the trench.Its been over a month and still no show. Mother has heart and kidney disease and copd. Artificial knees and hips. She goes to work at 6:30 am and works til 1:00 pm cooking and serving meals to elderly and home bound. She even worked thru the virus man! For more than a month we can't mow the front corner because of the ditch and rocks they left behind so, the other day, I find her out in the front cutting it with a pair of scissors!!! They shut my gas off on a Friday evening because someone (who was neither me nor property owner, just some random dude I guess) called and said they wanted it turned off at my address. I've been living here for 3 years and it's been in my name the entire time. No call, no text, no email, no letter, no one even knocked on the door. When I called to figure out what was going on they told me they only start service on Tues and Thurs, so I would be without hot water, heat, and the ability to use my stove for four days because they can't check who actually owns the property before turning off gas. How they can justify turning gas off any day of the week (especially late Friday) but won't turn it back on EVEN WHEN IT'S THE RESULT OF THEIR INCOMPETENCE except on Tues and Thurs is beyond me. If I could give a zero I would . I have an account with them that started 5 months ago and despite having not used one bit of their gas due to everything in my apt being run by electric I have an outstanding bill of $123.18 and received a disconnection notice on the first of this month which is a Tuesday and also today . Despite my aggravation of being charged for something I'm not receiving and having not been given any other choice but to go through them I figured I would call them to see if it was possible to pay the bill in 3 days because I get paid on Friday . The lady on the phone informed me that wasn't an option and I had till the end of the day to come up with the money which frankly is beyond ridiculous and poor business . At this point I'm considering buying a couple electric heaters and taking my chances .besides being a greedy heartless monopoly of a company I can't really comment on their gas because i haven't used any of it. I got really sick a few months ago and had to have major surgery that left me 200,000 in debt as well as out of work for over a month leaving me completely strapped for cash and this company that makes multi millons for choiceless customers that aren't even receiving their product can't make arrangements to wait 3 extra days to disconnect makes me feel they lack companion or reasonability . I would give a negative star review if possible. They came and shut off the gas to our food manufacturing building with zero notice. Obviously this effects both our HVAC unit and our hot water heater which is against OSHA to have no hot water in a food manufacturing facility. The bill was up to date and Spire could give zero reason for why it was shut off in the first place. The quickest Spire could show up was 3 days later! The whole operation was shut down because of Spire's fuck up and they had zero sense of urgency to rectify the problem they created. Its gets worse.... Finally, a technician came out and again no sense of urgency but a real sense of trying to find excuses for why he could not get things turned back on. The hot water heater was the major concern and the technician said he could not turn the gas back on because he believes there is going to be too much pressure to the hot water heater. The technician does a reading and it turns out it is low pressure "3.5 to an optimal 5". So the technician decides to turn off all the gas to the hot water heater because the gas wasn't at the optimal 5. The very next day I turned on what he turned off to get the hot water heater going and to actually get the operation running again. The ripple effect continues... The weather has been cold then hot then cold again and we noticed a dated HVAC in the front area of the building was not working. I finally called an HVAC technician who did some readings and we go to a different furnace then the main HVAC and it turns out that goddamn technician shut off the gas to that as well. This whole issue stemming from Spires incompetence has cost my company over $500 of technician fees and 3 days of production being shut down. There needs to be a healthy competition of gas companies to weed out the shittiness of Spire. This is 8th state I have lived and worked in and I have never dealt with a more directly disruptive company especially in the utility industry. read more

This greedy little monopoly will make sure to take every cent they can and do nothing to help or improve the service. Spire got my account mixed up with another account while moving addresses. Come to find out, I had been paying someone elses bill for about 5 months, without paying my own bill. Nothing on the website indicated that it was somebody else's bill, it had MY name, MY log in, and address and number. Spire comes to my house to switch the gas off, I try to explain that I had been paying my bill but theres nothing the worker could do. My gas gets turned off. I call customer service for a week straight and nobody knows whats going on, im met with mundane voices who put the blame on me and do absolutely nothing to help when this was a transfer error on their end. I still have to pay $640 with money I dont have. I dont have gas for the rest of the year. I moved and didnt pay the bill. I get a delinquent on my credit which before was outstanding. If I could leave 1 star out I would. I had to switch from Black Hills Energy to Spire because BH does not handle Missouri. This company is a total rip off. It is outrageous that my bill went from $74 last month to $152! Yes it's winter but I turn my heat down and bundle up at night. I don't turn my thermostat way up during the day when I'm home either. They add ridiculous charges for meter? $20, gas usage $30 and Natural gas cost? $88! Plus delivery? $50! And nothing for senior citizens to lower the cost when we live on a below poverty level retirement social security payout as a thank you for working since 16 yrs old. Called customer service on 4/28 to cancel service for a house I sold.Was told that the meter was inside the house i would need to make an appointment to have it read for final bill. Was told Spire would be out on 5/4 from 7:00 am to 5:00 and they would call me to give me 15 minutes to 30 minutes to get to the house. By 3:00 I had not heard so called customer service and asked if they were coming. Was told no Spire cancelled the appointment. No one could explain why it was cancelled. I waited all day and missed a day of work waiting. No apology was given ask to speak to a manager was told they were at lunch at 3:00 in the afternoon, then was told there are no managers. Horrible customers service. I am demanding compensation. Waiting to here back. read more

Missed these clowns by ten minutes. Took a day off work to get gas turned on. Even though they were scheduled to be here for 2 hours they can't get a crew back out for a week. They were given explicit instructions to call before they arrived. They said they would. No one lives at the address. It's a commercial building. Typical lazy bums- no call whatsoever. The company appeared, rang the doorbell and informed me that they were out to change the meter. The technician began work, left, returned to work, left again and then returned. Upon leaving the final time I found he had run over a sprinkler head (breaking it). I called to notify the company (Angie) and was told someone "would get back to me in 2-3 days". I waited and 3 days later I contacted them again (Jason) who informed me the first person I spoke with (Angie) had sent the message to the wrong department. I had the head fixed by my irrigation company (I did not need a geyser in my front yard every time the system started up). Four days later I was contacted by (Shenia) and told she would follow up and get back to me. Three days later I again spoke to the company (Angie and Teresa) who said they saw what was happening in their notes and I should be hearing something soon. Three days later, I just got off the phone again (Shenia) and was told "needed proof that it was their technician who caused the problem". This whole process took two weeks with the end result that this company has no integrity and will not stand behind their work. My sprinkler system was working perfectly in the morning prior to the spire truck arriving. The truck was parked (all three times) on the edge of the curb where my sprinkler head is. After completion of their work, my sprinkler head was found and the sprinkler head was broken. How much proof is needed and why wait two weeks to inform me of the 'need for proof'? I really wish there was another choice for service as I would change without any hesitation. read more

Their corporate culture is why monopolies are illegal in other industries. $22 of my $28 bill is for the "customer charge". 82% of my pretax bill is just for the honor of being their customer. Also we get the benefit of the "summer" rates. The price gouging winter rates, that are almost 5x the summer rate, won't start until people need to heat their homes. Way to go Spire, you're as pleasant as an itchy butthole. The Attorney General should look into the price gouging and the state of Missouri should end the utility Monopoly. Here's the deal. One screw-up I would forgive. Two screw-ups I will not. First, my neighborhood switched over to Spire's control seemingly out of nowhere, and they shut off our gas in December on a Friday afternoon. We called and called, finally got someone to pick up, and they wouldn't come out to turn it back on until the following Monday. We're talking an entire weekend of freezing temperatures. If that's not illegal, we are doing something wrong with our laws. Second, we start service with their god-awful start-of-service fee. They would only start service with our landlord, not with us, even though we would be the ones to pay for the service. I have now learned after two weeks of talking with their customer support that in order to simply let us pay, we would have to pay another god-awful start-of-service fee. Upon canceling the service we got a $566 bill due and the company does not allow you to make payments over time on the balance. They cannot expect this of people in this economy. If I stop service at an address, send a final bill and do not recycle the account number. One star. Do not recommend. If Spire is going to be forced upon you, I recommend refitting your home/business to move away from gas. This is a tale of disconnecting service. To make sure it is easy for the customer, upon disconnection, they will give you a window of 8 am to 8 pm (always a sign of a well organized and customer minded company) for them to get into the building. When yo ask why they need to physically gain access, you don't really get an answer. The next phase of customer service is what really separates Spire away from the pack of mediocre to bad to utility companies is that even though they give you a 12 hour window for you to wait, they don't even show up or call! They are so unorganized and care so little for their customers that they will just not show up after demanding the only way to disconnect service is for them to be physically present! Good stuff. Really above and beyond in the customer service department. I have never written a bad review but after sitting in a vacant location for 12 hours waiting for a no show service call, I was angry enough to write this. So, in summary, if you can avoid it, do not do business with this company. Buy a grill, live off of a campfire, use solar to heat your water, do whatever but do not give these these people you money. read more

They will only mail you notifications about your gas. The bill is in my fiancé's name. She failed to open mail for some time and someone shows up at our door at 9am to shut our service off. No call, no curtesy. The spire employee told me If I could show him a paid bill he would not shut it off. I ran inside to get the bill paid, but hey, they shut it off a solid MINUTE after I closed my door. They love to collect that $65 turn on fee. No calls about shut offs and will be at your door EARLY AM. But, go to get your gas turned back on and you'll get a 12 hour window next day, not like there wasn't just a guy here turning it off or anything. I feel like shutting peoples gas off is a low priority compared to getting it turned on. Horrible company practice. Just another big corporation taking advantage of the little guy. I wish I could provide a lower rating. $22 for a delivery fee is completely unnecessary. I was recently charged the same amount of gas this month as I was for the previous month even though I was gone half the month and barely used my gas-eating appliances. I tried calling the company to find out what was happening with my bill and got hung up after waiting on the phone nearly every time I called. I'm unhappy with prices now, and, after reading other reviews, very nervous about the upcoming winter season. I would give 0 stars if possible. I had a Friday, 4-6 pm window for a service connect. I chose Friday, because every other window was an open 7am -5pm (YES, TEN HOUR) window. I was at the property at 3:30 pm. About 4:40 received call Tech was on the way. As soon as he pulled in the driveway, he told me he got pulled off to an emergency. I asked when someone else would come and he didn't know but assured me they would call. He gave me his phone number "just in case" and told me that if it was before 10:00 pm it would likely be him returning. About 45 mins later I received another call that a Tech was on the way. I met him in the driveway (different guy) and he ALSO told me that he just got pulled to an emergency! I called into the office and my choices were to wait it out or reschedule to the 10 hour window of a work day. I said I can wait, but is there ANY IDEA of when someone would come? She said she didn't know but could be as late as 9 pm. As a reminder, I am waiting in a vacant house with no heat and it is 43 degrees (and of course now my phone is dying). I decide to wait in my car to warm up and charge my phone. And of course, since I thought I would be done by 6:30 had not eaten since lunch. 9:15pm rolls around. Still no word. I call and the office is now CLOSED! In desperation, I call the 1st technician who gave me his phone number. No answer, so I text him that no one has come, no one is answering the phone and now I have been waiting 5 1/4 hours past my appt. time. The fellow sees my text, and calls in and asks someone to call me. (THANK YOU). Nice enough woman, who also has NO IDEA when someone will come! I said, "what are we talking about? Midnight, 4 am, what??" and remind her I am in a vacant house with no heat, just waiting for them. "Well I'm sure it won't be midnight!" So, I wait some more. Finally midnight rolls around. I call and hit the "Emergency" number. I immediately tell the very nice woman that i have no emergency, but that I have been waiting for EIGHT HOURS NOW with no end in sight. She looks over the notes and says I'm not on the schedule! WHAT THE HELL. She sends a tech immediately over. Super nice, found some things that needed fixed. I said, how do I avoid what happened tonight from happening again. She had no answer for me. Everyone I spoke to was nice, the techs were also nice...there is obviously a disconnect between whomever is taking the calls (in another state, of course) and Dispatch. TL;DR SPIRE SUCKS AND HAS THEIR HEAD UP THEIR ASS AND SINCE THEY HAVE NO COMPETITION IN THE AREA, YOU HAVE TO PUT UP WITH THEIR BULLSHIT. read more

What's hard for me to understand is why did my energy bill only increase by like $7. You have to have electricity to operate the furnace.
