Absolutely one of the worst travel experiences I've ever had. We originally booked a flight with Spirit Airlines for March 21 at 12:29 PM, departing from Chicago to San Juan, Puerto Rico. Leading up to our trip, we kept receiving email confirmations that everything was on time no issues at all. Then, the moment we arrived at the airport, we were blindsided with an email saying our flight was CANCELLED. No warning. No heads-up. Just canceled. The only options given were to rebook or take a refund. The earliest available rebooking wasn't until Tuesday, which completely ruined our plans, so we were forced to take a refund and book last-minute tickets with United Airlines costing us significantly more money out of pocket. We were told our baggage would be transferred to our return flight, which added to the confusion and stress. Unfortunately, it didn't end there. On our way back from Puerto Rico, we were scheduled again for a 12:29 PM flight. Throughout the day, we kept getting delay notifications one after another until the last update pushed the flight all the way to 2:59 AM. We waited, checked in, and then unbelievably the flight was CANCELLED again. At that point, there was little to no help from staff. We were told to go to the Spirit desk, leaving us scrambling around the airport, trying to figure out how to retrieve our luggage from baggage claim, rebook flights, and then go back through TSA all over again. It was chaotic, exhausting, and completely disorganized. Once again, no available flights until Monday or Tuesday. Rebooking with Spirit would have meant more delays, more uncertainty, and more money wasted with zero guarantee the flight wouldn't be canceled AGAIN. So we had no choice but to request another refund and book with United Airlines spending even more money just to get home. This entire experience was stressful, expensive, and completely avoidable with proper communication and customer support. Spirit Airlines showed zero reliability and zero accountability. Never EVER flying with Spirit again. The "cheap" price is not worth the headache, the risk, or the extra costs you'll end up paying in the end. At first they sell cheap tickets, but then come endless hidden fees, rude service, and unfair treatment. I was on flight #2343 from Orlando to Chicago, gate 8. Before boarding, they announced they needed volunteers to leave the plane with a $700 offer including hotel, but no one volunteered. Since I was in the last boarding group (Group 5), they targeted me -- it felt like they wanted to kick me out of the plane just because I was last group. At the gate, Mrs. Jennifer suddenly made a huge problem. She told me I could only bring one bag. I had just 1 small handbag and 1 small carry-on, but she forced me to combine everything into one. Then she made me check the size and demanded my credit card to charge $99 for one bag. Another staff member even asked her, "Did you charge her yet?" Then they threatened us, saying we had only 2 minutes or they would not let us on the plane. This felt like racist discrimination, because my sister (also Asian) was forced to do the same thing. I was at OHARE airport. I came across Victor R. He took my fishing poll for no reason even after there was extra space still available on the flight. Other ladies at the front desk would have let me take it for free but Victor INSISITED I either pay $150 or leave it behind. Unfortunately I am flying spirit and don't have the financial freedom to pay $150 dollars for a fishing poll. AWFUL!!!! We booked a round trip. Return flight was changed to where we had to cancel and book with another airline. That's not the problem. Problem is, Spirit Airlines said they processed the (partial) refund but we never received it. Our credit card company had to initiate a dispute claim to get it paid. Then the outgoing flight was changed-- at that point we cancelled it as well, and same thing happened-- no refund after a month even though I have an e-mail confirmation of the cancellation and the refund due. They directed me back to our credit card company, who said they could not re-open the dispute case since they already made partial payment. They directed me back to Spirit. Called Spirit and with great reluctance, they finally let me speak to a manager-- who read off the same script: we processed this already (a month ago); it should take 7 business days to process; call your credit card company. Guess they didn't understand that a month is greater than 7 business days.... We will NEVER use Spirit Airlines again. read more

I'm sorry Yelpers - but I just can't in good conscience recommend anyone fly with Spirit Airlines. I've had multiple run ins with them with multiple bad experiences, from damaged bags with no accountability from them, to delayed flights to flights changing almost 4 times, including instead of being a direct flight to Tampa from Chicago, they changed it to a 5 hour layover in Atlanta, and THEN and only then, would we depart for Tampa (LOL). The seats are so uncomfortable on the flights as well. The customer service is non existent and not American based, their "oversized bag" fees are ridiculous- $89 additional to the already overpriced $55 checked bag fee for being 5 LBs over (anything over 40 LBs is oversized per Spirit). Totally ridiculous airline, yes you will certainly pay the lowest airfare price by flying with them, but at what cost? I do not recommend flying with Spirit, but if you do get caught in their venus fly trap of low prices - just know that you've been warned (it's rare to see a business rated this low on Yelp! We flew Spirit for the first time and unfortunately it will be our last because of our poor flight experience. This airline was not our first choice but due to the skyrocketing fuel costs, add to that spring break in full swing, we were priced out of flying our usual carrier. Despite the low cost, that was probably the few best things flying with Spirit. Everything else we experienced was mostly bad. First of all, our flight was delayed 3 times. We were scheduled to depart from Chicago to Orlando at around 2:30pm but by the time 2:30 rolled, our plane had yet to arrive at the gate. It was 8 when we made landfall where we were then faced with the agonizing tasks of deplaning, running to the bathrooms, heading over to the bag carousel and finally make the long walk to the MCO (Orlando) car counter to pick up our rental. Second, paying for checked bags at an exorbitant cost was not fun. We paid $65 each way for the checked bags we had. To save on costs my husband and I, along with my parents, shared a checked in bag. Weight limit is 40 lbs. We made sure we fell under the weight limit and brought the biggest suitcases we own! On the upside, Spirit has the best cheap comfy seats. The seats are faux leather and are comfortable enough to endure a short trip. We had no issues with staff. Plane snacks and drinks are self-pay a la carte. It really is a low-cost no-frills airline. read more

Who then transfers me x2 to a "live agent". More than half an hour later, it's still not done & I'm left with "you will be contacted via email within 24-48 hours to investigate your concerns". My suitcase and its contents were destroyed after they did an inspection. The items they seen on the X-ray were placed in the top and in one spot on purpose so that when they opened it, it was in one spot and no need to terrorize the other contents. The items were strictly business related and set with the business names badge. They tore out all contents in the suitcase and tried to Just tried it back in all messed up, destroying business papers that were stacked in one spot. They attempted to zip it back up but could not due to how they repacked it and never apparently opened the expander, causing the zippers toto break. When my luggage arrived, it was still open and contents hanging out. I went to the hello counter and was ignored while they helped people behind me. I was very polite. The person being there counter was that of color and only helped those of color. So I went up stairs to get help from someone else but got the same exact treatment. I was first in line with a line of colored people behind meme and they began to call up all the ones behind me. I walked up to the counter where there was no one being helped and was told to wait my turn. I said I was in line first I did wait my turn and they keep calling everyone behind me. The lady walked away. I was polite. I ended up leaving. I do not recommend Spirit to anyone. On another side note, you have to pay $75 extra for baggage, with no option for it to be included in your ticket price, I had to pay $100 for my small back pack that went under the seat as a carry on. No one could answer me, due to their systems limitations. Said to go to airport - which I did. The counter agent/s looked, and told me that they are oversold with 7 people on standby. How hard was that - over the phone. Could have saved me time, frustration and UBER $$'s. When I offered some constructive criticism, the agent got very snarky and condescending. Spirit should work to improve their employee training and work culture. Poor communication skills and attitude across the board with limited training to their system. Paul at the Illinois ORD lifted my spirit, I had bought tickets from ORD to las Vegas then burbank, due to the fires we did not wanna fly all the way to burbank, so we have my family member picking us up in Vegas. However when we got to the bag check, they said our bag would be going to burbank, no ifs, ands, or buts, well that's quite a ride from Vegas to burbank, and our family member was already in Vegas! I flew Spirit to Myrtle Beach. The flight wasn't full, in fact the last three rows where empty. Traditional airlines allow passengers to utilize empty rows for personal comfort. Spirit however, isn't concerned with passenger comfort. They used seatbelts to prevent passengers from sitting in the empty rows. Want a cup of water? They'll charge you you for that. My friend paid extra to sit in the front row, I attempted to talk to him during the flight - an egressive flight attendant promptly informed me that I would have to pay for an upgrade if I wanted to convey a message to my friend. I've been flying around the country and the World for the past five decades. This, however, was my first and last flight with Spirit. I'll never fly with Spirit again. I can accept the idea that they'll nickel and dime customers. What bothered me most was the corporate culture of hostility and contempt towards passengers. Every interaction I had with Spirit employees was unpleasant. The experiences ranged from rude to hostile. It's as if Spirit employees see customers as intruders. It was remarkable to experience how hospitality and customer service are completely nonexistent at this airline. I have been more comfortable and experienced better manners riding the 5 train during rush hour. I cannot imagine what type of training the Spirit staff receive. In my experience the fish rots from the head so I blame upper management for the culture of hostility. Clearly civility is not a priority for Spirit leadership. The staff was great. Very friendly and helpful. The surcharge for picking seats, which used to free was way too high almost $80 for 2. I didn't personally care that much, but that's what it took to guarantee that we could sit together and i didn't want my take a chance that my wife would have to sit next to some random wierdo I'm only 5'6" and 135lbs but I found the seats, even the so called Go Comfy option. My laptop bag would only fit about halfway under the seat reducing what little legroom there was to almost nothing. The tray table was the smallest I'd ever seen and was dirty. Even had ground in dirt which was not possible to clean with a wet wipe. Spirit Airlines is peak you get what you pay for - I know everybody here is similarly frustrated with Spirit and for good reason. I got a $50 voucher for their delays and bad service and then when I tried to use the voucher, because of all their restrictions, I would only have been able to use $5.58 of the voucher and have to pay for the rest of it. The affordable prices are what lured me into flying with Spirit Airlines. When traveling, I am always trying to on a budget because there is always something that resorts in spending over my intended limit whether it be on food, or travel to-and-from the airport. Prior to initially flying my coworkers told me horror stories about this airline. One of them referred to the airline as the Walmart of the airline Industry which I thought was pretty hilarious. That night, I watched YouTube videos which confirmed those horror stories told by my coworkers. Spirit sends out excessive emails for upgrades whether it be for seat or baggage. As annoying as it is, I recommend not ignoring them because of the possibility of a gate change or even flight. The excessive emails for seat upgrades prior to my initial flight made me feel as though I did not have a seat. It was pretty scary to think that I would arrive at O'Hare International Airport for my flight and be told that I had to pay for a seat. I had downloaded the Spirit application on my Android phone prior to my initial flight with the airline. Having it downloaded made for an easy check in without waiting to see either an agent or utilize a self-check in machine. I literally checked in, then made my way to security. It works out well if you arrive within that hour before your flight. I remember during my initial flight hearing a passenger as he departed the gate state that he is never flying with Spirit Airlines again. It is a memory that makes me chuckle because at the time I expected the worst out of the airline. In comparison to that initial flight which felt like a cluster at the gate; the gate during this flight appeared very organized. I ended up having to see an agent in order to get a seat prior to boarding. There were no charges for that seat because I did not need extra leg space which is also assured on the application. The seat ended up being the next best thing to a window seat: an aisle seat within seats away from the exit door rather than near the rear of the plane. The seat comfort was fine, and the leg space was well suitable for me. I never care for leg space as long as I can fit my military style backpack underneath the seat in front which fit fine. I slept comfortably through the majority of this flight because I was tired, plus the one thing I always pack with me is melatonin. Flying with this airline I do recommend carrying a neck pillow which will allow your neck to rest on something if you do not have that window seat. Since I slept the majority of the flight, I had no communication with the flight attendants other than the boarding flight hello, and post departure goodbye greetings. In-between both greetings I enjoyed the pre-takeoff safety briefing from one of the attendants which had many passengers giggling. As a whole this flight to New Orleans was a great experience. I am thankful for it with all of the horror stories I encountered involving Spirit Airlines. I do have my reservations after having had a flight canceled flying from New Orleans to Chicago. This is the absolute worst airline in history . So I booked a flight from NYC to Orlando MCO and I was booked for a 6 am flight since I had a cruise to catch . All week I got emails regarding upgrading my seat , placing a bid and that everything was on time . I watched the weather and the day of my departure the weather was scheduled to be sunny and beautiful in NYC (8/9/2025). At 1 am the day my flight was scheduled to leave I received an email that my flight was CANCELLED . When I called spirit they immediately offered a refund on my entire round trip but I needed to get to my destination . All other flights were booked in nearby airports so I decided on accepting my refund and paying almost 2k on a different airline to get on a flight. Spirit has no regard for their customers . They don't care about us , the inconveniences and they play the game of blaming it on weather so that they are not responsible . I've always heard that they weren't the most reliable but this is just irresponsible . This is no way to operate a business . My return flight was also delayed . I will never fly spirit or recommend this awful airline to anyone . They really make you feel like you're bottom of the barrel for even flying with them . Their reps are poorly trained and customer service is not a priority . Tell everyone you know , the money you save booking with them can cost you thousands and they just don't care . Spirit Airlines lost my checked bag. it's been two weeks. I packed everything into my bag. The customer service was extremely unhelpful and they have given me very little information. One of their tactics is to make communication difficult. Luggage should never be lost, but if it does customer service should look for ways to compensate their mistake instead of just filing a claim. I can't afford to purchase everything I had in that bag all at once. They should, I paid them for a service (transporting my bag) and they did not do that and lost at least $800 worth of stuff. Truly, I'm not trying to be rude. I am frustrated with lack of care and support from Spirit airlines throughout their entire process. The flight was unpleasant and then the baggage loss. got a great deal thru spirit... $120 both way from Newark to Orlando I have read so many negative reviews/comments about spirit and that helped me to prepare through all hurdle. while booking anything I do my research thoroughly and that helps me to avoid the extra charge, problems which other people faced. I got the deal EWR-MCO-EWR in $120, now I knew I need to pay extra for check-in luggage, so I bought a 40lb check-in bag in $30. I enrolled myself in $9 fare spirit program ( not sure why it is called $9, never got $9 deal) and through this, I saved $59 in booking the ticket. I did not choose seats and saved $20 per seat too. I did web check-in 24 hrs before and got random seat which was window and middle seat for me and my wife, so tip - do web check-in and most probably you 'll get adjacent seats with your friends/family. while coming back, got middle and aisle seat and there was no one at window seat so got 2 seats for myself. check-in at the airport was very easy, did self-check-in at the kiosk, got the boarding pass and submit the bag. all are done in 10 minutes. same for coming back from Orlando, where I need to submit a bag by myself, the kiosk machine was easy to use. as they claim themselves, no reclining seat, kinda worked for me, as I don't like somebody lean on my food tray. the seat was okay not very comfy. they do sell beverages snacks (it's not free )inside the flight and also trying to sell their spirit credit cards. I got one while booking the ticket with 15k Miles and inside the plane, there were offering 35-40K miles, so if you are interested, take it in the plane when it's in Air. What worked for me is I knew everything that could have spoiled my trip ( seat selection fee, check-in bag fee, snacks are not free) so I was prepared and got the deal accordingly. for both legs, flights were on time and landed on time. it was a very nice experience for me with spirit. read more

*worst experience* My flight was scheduled yesterday at 7 pm. I received an email from Spirit airline that my flight is delayed. The departure time changed to 7:26 pm. And I even tried to check in before heading to the airport, however, the app doesn't allow me to do so. So I have to check-in in the airport. But when I arrived, the agent told me the gate was closed. So they couldn't let me in. What?! I showed them the email, the flight was delayed! It shouldn't departure earlier per the email they sent. The agent say- oh, nothing is perfect, just ignore the email and arrive on time. Eventually, I have to pay 99 dollars to reschedule to another flight. But the flight I paid 99 extra got canceled!!!! They are the worst airline for a reason. No customer support. I showed up on time checked in for my flight and they refused to let me on my flight or check my bag even though I had paid for it. Now they are telling me I am not entitled to a refund. Literally wasted $500 and half of my day at the airport because of this joke of a company and it's incompetent employees. I would suggest anyone who has a similar experience send a complaint to the DOT. They have the worse business practices / policies/ fees... the worst airline service read more
