Puppy yoga at Spirit Yoga was a lot of fun. The teacher Lucia was really friendly and had a playful energy toward incorporating the puppies. Don't forget your yoga mat, but in case you do, they have some you can borrow that get sanitized between uses. Careful what you bring into the actual yoga studio if you don't want the puppies chewing it. They chewed my slides and my water bottle, but it didn't bother me. If you have stuff, there are some little cubby spaces available. It wasn't super hard to find parking; it took us maybe 5 minutes to park (street parking) and then we walked about 2 blocks. I think there was a bit of a mismatch between my expectations for the class and what I actually received. I attended a puppies and yoga class here recently, and while the instructor was awesome and great at guiding us through the moves, the actual yoga portion of the class was perhaps 30 min max. We started a bit late and ended very early. I had been under the impression that this was an hour long class, so I was a bit disappointed and would have liked to do a few more moves. Additionally, I loved the puppies and the rescue organization that brought them is doing amazing work, but I cannot help but be uncomfortable with the amount of "accidents" they had on the floor/yoga mats. Even with plenty of paper towels and disinfecting wipes on hand, I would have probably tossed my mat if a puppy had peed on mine. Overall it was a great break in my rather hectic week, but I think my schedule (and budget) have me sticking to yt yoga routines for now. read more

I love coming here for Marissa's Advanced flow (level 2) classes, they are challenging because she offers many advanced poses and transitions during each class. Years ago i used to come here for Helen Cloots classes for the same reason. Im glad that theres a studio that still offers advanced poses, because most studios advanced classes are not very challenging for me. They usually involve heating the room or holding a pose longer, which i dislike. Or the entire class leads up to just one peak pose, which is also what I'm not looking for. I know that Yoga is a business and most studios don't offer a bunch of advanced poses because it can intimidate some people, so studios eventually stop teaching them. I really appreciate that Spirit Yoga has thrived on providing difficult classes, advanced poses and transitions thru out the years. All of Marissa's classes come with an intense abb workout, which i dread; But is probably the reason many people come to the class. I guess they do need to compete with CorePower which is literally right across the street. The fact that Spirit Yoga has survived for this long with CorePower just a stones throw away is a testament to how good they are. Though in my eyes, there is no comparison, quality teachers, friendly staff, advanced poses. Most classes here are heated to about 90, there are no showers, Parking can be hard to find depending on the time, so be prepared to come early to look for parking. read more

I've called Spirit my home yoga studio for years -- and though I travel and practice around the world, I'm always happy to step through its doors in Pacific Beach and drop in for wonderful flows and great energy. Some of my favorite yoga teachers in San Diego gift their voice within, and offer YTT programs to grow the next generation of spirit builders. Returning after a break during the onset of Covid has rekindled much yogic joy in my mind & body. Spirit has adapted well to the needs of the community with safety measures that still allow for a healthy & enjoyable practice. Lately I've been relishing the 330pm Tuesday/Thursday classes with Sarah Mondet. A $5 community class, the 330pm timeslots are often given to newly minted yoga teachers honing their flows, pace, and playlists. Sarah's class has been an absolute joy, due to both her burgeoning powers as a teacher and also an inner light that cannot help but shine through to studio's practitioners. She's a fantastic testament to the Spirit YTT program and I look forward to every class (especially as a break while remote working!). An okay studio with some really well-known instructors in the San Diego area. There's actually more that I dislike about this studio than I like, but I'll start with elaborating what the positives, which is why this place is getting 3 stars instead of 2. A couple of my favorite instructors have taught/are teaching here, and I'm happy that there is a place in Pacific Beach that offers classes to the public. In all honesty, I always felt a little uncomfortable that yoga is so expensive and exclusive. I feel grateful that I can afford to do drop-ins and memberships at various studios, but I know there are a lot of people who can't, which is a shame since I believe yoga should be for everyone. Here you can pay what you can. There are no membership fees and I believe if you don't have cash, you can barter (? I could be wrong about this, but you may want to ask...not that I have anything to barter, lol). Advanced yogis: please note that this is still a relatively new studio. The classes here are on the easier side and you won't be doing anything crazy in their Level 2 or Level 2/3 classes. Which is fine because I don't expect to do hard classes all the time. That's not what yoga's about. With the instructors trained at CP, you might expect more of a CorePower workout than an actual practice. Just my personal experience. Because their competitor is essentially CorePower (which is right across from them), I'm not surprised. If you want a decent yoga experience, I strongly recommend taking classes from Helen Cloots, Meghan Kruljac, and Rachel Lubich. I've also heard great things about Jenn Richardson. I hate to say this, but I was NOT happy with taking classes from the instructors who were CorePower certified, although this is simply my preference (I refuse to name names, but if you're a CorePower regular or familiar with the sequence, you'll know who I'm referring to)...I'm sure other people enjoy their classes, though. Unfortunately, I've noticed that a little over half of the instructors who teach regularly here are from CorePower. So basically you're paying for a CorePower class for a fraction of CP's membership cost. That and parking is a nightmare here as it is in the heart of PB. Another thing I dislike about this studio is that I feel like the people who practice here are VERY competitive, which is odd because this isn't CorePower. Is it because there is a mirror? I've practiced at other studios where I was surrounded with students who were MUCH more advanced and experienced than the Spirit Yoga regulars and I don't get that competitive vibe at other studios than I do over at Spirit. I've experienced this more than once at Spirit and it leaves a slightly bad taste in my mouth. If you're coming in for the "spiritual" aspect of yoga...it's lacking here. I've been told by one instructor that she has to "lighten up" on the philosophy because the students here tend to glaze over it and not pay attention. I find that ironic, given the studio's name. Also, I'm pretty sure I'm the only naysayer here, but that studio space gets SO hot. 85 degrees is the most I can tolerate; anything higher than that makes me sick. I've seen the thermostat and the temperature fluctuates between 87 and 95 degrees. Is the temperature purposely high because everyone here is a CorePower practitioner and will get upset if the AC gets turned on briefly? Not that I like to practice cold yoga (I hate beach yoga for that reason) but I have a very physically demanding practice and I can assure you you do not need a hot room to practice yoga, especially if you want to learn how to invert. External heat gives off a false sense of flexibility and it won't make you learn complex postures any faster. I don't see myself coming here too often because it's in PB, which is a neighborhood I'm not really a fan of (which is probably why most of the students here are vain and competitive), and I live quite a distance away. If I'm visiting friends, I may go here for fun as there are a couple teachers here I like, but I'm not particularly motivated to go out of my way and practice here regularly. I know this place was created with good intentions and I respect that (hence I do feel bad about leaving a 3 star review), but after taking multiple classes and being impressed with only a handful of teachers, I'm going to pass for the most part. read more

I found Spirit Yoga through ClassPass. The parking wasn't easy, but, that's pretty much how things are here. I think I went around the block two or three times before I found a space. Some time has passed since I took the class. The people at the front of the studio were nice and the instructor was good. I cannot say enough good things about this studio! They offer a wide variety of classes for all levels of yogis, and at convenient times. There is something for everyone here. I especially love Britt's new Primal Yoga class which is a unique blend of power vinyasa booty boot camp with fun high-energy vibes. It's a fabulous cardio workout in addition to great stretching and focusing on breathing. During this pandemic they are requiring e euro w wear masks inside the building except when on your mat, limiting class sizes, social distancing is required between yogis during class, there's an air filter running continuously, and disinfecting between classes. They also are offering virtual classes and some outdoor classes too for people who aren't yet comfortable with a class indoors. A few years ago, when I arrived to San Diego I went on a hunt. I literally went to all the yoga studios in Pacific Beach I could find what offered some form of "initiation" deal. I was doing so much yoga, I'm pretty sure I grew an inch. I think Spirit Yoga was test #15. And that was it for me. My quest had finally ended. It's not just that the staff is nice and genuine. The classes are pretty balanced, most teachers are super knowledgeable, you have a good blend of all styles... I was a member for a long time and then I joined a gym with yoga classes, so I dropped my membership. However, I still go a couple of times per month to their $5 drop-ins, for which I am so, so thankful :D read more

I have been practicing yoga for 5 years and going to Spirit yoga for the past 3 years but never agin... Threaten to be punch and asked to leave because I was using the block to stretch and instead of just laying flat! I thought yoga was a free practice as long as we are respectful to others, not if you are in SPITIT YOGA studio and class is tough by JONATHAN OLD! You are only allowed to do what he say otherwise he will ask you to leave the class you have just pay for! He littler tried to grab my arm and told me to leave! I came to the class, put my mat down and the JONATHAN OLD/ teacher comes to me tries to grab my arm ( I moved) and told me that he will punch me in the face if my phone rings ( my phone was off, and I politely said that), he said it in the front of entire class! Unbelievable ! The worst experience ever! Then beginning of the class, we are laying on our backs, i put a block under my shoulders, he comes to me and said that I need to remove the block, I politely answered that I am stretching, he said that if I don't do it he will ignore me through the class. As class go on we are in the last stage of the class, he asked me to leave as I am not laying done steel ( I was laying down on my back crossing my legs over, not interrupting anybody). I really like this studio. It's small and cute. In a good location. Great instructors. They have cheap drop in class prices and are also on class pass. The only thing I would complain about is parking but it's expected in that area of PB. You just have to leave early and allow yourself to drive around to look to make it to class on time. read more

I will embarrassingly admit, my first time entering the studio I was a few minutes late and rushed on in without introducing myself. I was greeted by the friendly Mr. Alex Weir, chuckling at my panicky-self trying to zen it out before Vinyasa 2. He assured me that there was still room and that the studio usually waits 3-4 minutes to begin class, for all you stragglers out there. I simply put down my name on a waiver and off I went (no 2 page "please initial here and here and here" nonsense). I tried the 10 day free pass and fell in love by day 2. LAYOUT/ENVIRONMENT The studio has one room, however don't be alarmed, it can fit plenty of people. The room itself is filled with plants along the walls, and is kept at a rather humid atmosphere to keep those gorgeous plants alive. The back has changing rooms, cubbies, a unisex bathroom, yoga blocks/straps, and a water station. I suppose the only con about this place is the lack of shower stalls, however I'm sure renovations will be coming in the near future. CLASSES/INSTRUCTORS Having taken the majority of their offered classes, I can say that the instructors are very high quality and genuinely care for your well-being. They will consistently ask how you're doing, if you're in need of any healing, want to focus on a certain pain-spot, and even conduct in real-humanlike conversations..WOW! (I will callout Brad for showcasing some incredible deep hip-openers and not being shy with inversions). However, regardless of class, time, or instructor, you will walk out learning something new each and every single day. They are not afraid to give hands-on help, but will respect your space if requested. A suggestion I would offer is for the instructors to offer some more mind-body-spirit inspirational quotes/insights throughout the class. PRICING Perfect. Just finished by 10 day trial and I'm sold! On my first visit Steve really made me feel at home at the Spirit Yoga studio and his class kicked my butt! Since the first time, I've taken classes with Nasli, Kelli and Brad/Sarah. I love that all of the teacher have signature styles and play their own music-- I cannot say how important that is!!! (One of the reasons I hate Core Power is because the routines are pretty much the same, well and the classes are huge, fast paced/"powery" just too aerobic.) Anyway, I love Spirit because Yoga is not about competition. It is about finding Santosha/Contentment with yourself and your surroundings which is easy to do at Spirit. Its no frills, non pretentious, and reasonably priced. My favorite experience so far has been the Saturday night Blacklight Yoga! They provide free glow sticks, body paint, stickers and black the room out. Its definitely a different yoga experience... not very "om" but is an awesome alternative to partying on a Saturday, plus they serve wine after class! Seriously f'ing cool. read more

OK, we're all aware that Yoga is now on the up-tick, throw a rock outside your window and you will hit two yoga studios in the 92109. This by far is the less crowded and the most relaxing. For me yoga is "relaxing, stretchy time", so if it's totally crowded and I'm smelling 20 varieties of body odor and patchouli oil then that's not going to make for a fond yoga experience. This is a nice studio with good teachers. The staff always makes me feel very welcome. The only thing I really don't like is the temp in there. It is not advertised as hot yoga but is always just shy of 90 in there. Also they advertise as donation based which they are not anymore. I do really like the $5 vinyasa 1 class. I was visiting San Diego and decided to check out Spirit Yoga for some early 6am classes. First of all, it's great that they even offer classes that early. A lot of places don't open till 8 or 9, which is too late for people that have 9-5 jobs. I was lucky enough to take classes with both Sarah and James. Both were very friendly and welcoming. And since class sizes are smaller at 6am, I was able to get a lot of personal attention and assistance. Both Sarah and James were wonderful in talking through transitions and creating an early AM practice that was challenging, but also very relaxing and fun. I can't say enough good things about Spirit.. I first heard about Spirit through Steve from Ocean Front yoga on Law Street and I'm so glad I checked it out. Spirit has just about everything you could look for in a yoga studio. They take into consideration all five senses from sight, sound, smell, touch and even taste (they have a detox and "re-tox" night!) As an interior designer things like how a space makes you feel is really important... especially when you pick a studio. Oh and whenever you arrive, they always have a smile and hug ready for ya! Came here for the first time to celebrate my birthday with some backlight yoga! The staff was so accommodating to me and my friends. They give you free glow sticks and glow paint and the studio looks really cool with everyone glowing. They also give out free wine afterwards; although, you may be too dehydrated afterwards to even drink it! They keep their studio pretty warm, so expect to sweat a lot! Great work-out! Additionally, you get 10 free consecutive days of yoga as a first-time yogi, so I came back to try a couple of other classes. I could go on and on about how much I love this studio. Great location off of Ingraham street. It's almost like an omen to corepower next door that this is how yoga should be done. Teachers are absolutely superb! Not only are they great yoga teachers, but so friendly and really make it a point to get to know you. Studio is clean, spacious, and inviting. This place is really cool! They give you a very generous free week which I thought was awesome. Of course I told myself I would go everyday pff. Yeh I went once! I want to do the Reggae Flow though looks cool! Parking was a pain in the butt. Inside was cool, although since I was a newbie I put my mat down under the hanging plants, lol...bad idea every time I reached my arms up I hit the plant pot. (too tight in there to move) When I got there, the lady showed me around. Granted it wasnt the best time to give me a tour but she showed me everything in 30 seconds while another class just ended, so I was literally climbing over swetty people trying to catch up with her to see where the bathrooms were. Since it was dark, hot and slippery I literally almost broke my neck tripping over someone's block. I will go back for sure. But I can totally see what the other reviewers mean by "competitive vibe." Its PB so the deuchbag levels are high, what are you gonna do...I find myself really focusing on the drive and parking as a seller. If my stress levels increase after yoga because of over stimulation and dramatic parking it kind of defeats the purpose but if you live local I can see how this place would be great. I live in OB so the thought of Garnet sometimes is too intense. I like that they have Reggae and Hip Hop Flows, how original! read more

I should have reviewed this studio two years ago when I started going. It is literally one of the best studios in San Diego. Period. All the instructors are really friendly and knowledgeable and they come up with some really fun and creative flows. They are also up for requests and some nights the music switches to hip hip/rap which is sun a fun change. I live in north county but frequently travel to Spirit just because I love it so much. In the past I wasn't so into yoga. But then I tried Spirit Yoga... And my life changed. Something magical happened the first day I stepped foot into this divine studio. I could feel and sense this aura of people who really just want to enjoy the simple things in life. And this is exactly why I believe Spirit is the perfect name for this yoga studio. I've had Helen, Jenn, and Katie as my instructors... All very knowledgeable, helpful, and really know how to make you feel at ease, making sure you know your limits. I've learned so much from each and every one of these ladies; they all have their own style and uniqueness so every day is a different experience. I went to Katie's class on Wednesday night and fun is an understatement!!!! The whole class was lights off, live music, the best Yoga class I've taken thus! I'm no Yogi yet, but I will say going here and learning from these talented and inviting instructors really puts my whole attitude on life into perspective. NAMASTE!!! Donation based only is GRRrrrreat... I think if you go everyday giving a $5 would be fine. But if you're planning on going only once a week an $8-$12 I think would be preferred in my eyes.
