    Old Fashioned
    Amanda V.

I visited S&F in the middle of March Madness. Located in the hotel lobby, directly across from the entrance, and filled with people, the ambiance was a bit lacking and there wasn't enough seating to support the crowd. But the energy was electric and the old fashioned was shockingly good. I knew I was in for a treat when the bartender not only expressed the orange peel, but then ran it around the glass rim and down the side of the glass. The drink was perfectly balanced, served over a single rock, and garnished with a Luxardo cherry. I'll find a less crazy time to visit on the next go around, and savor another old fashioned while I'm there. Cheers.

    Salmon salad

Stayed at the Hyatt for a conference. After an exhausting day of travel, I searched for nearby restaurants and found the area lacking, so I went to the hotel bar. I learned that the bar and the hotel restaurant have the same dinner menu. There's also the option to take food to go or sit anywhere in the lobby and eat. I ate at the bar. The bartender recommended the smoked meats. I went with the smoked salmon salad and enjoyed it enough to consider returning another night during my stay to order it. Unfortunately the bulk of other conference-goers arrived the following day and from then on the bar was packed every night. The acoustics aren't great, meaning it was very loud when I passed through the lobby on the other nights. Overall, the bartenders were attentive, the location was ideal, and the salad hit the spot.

    Lemon drop

As I waited for a friend to arrive, I decided to stop in for a lemon drop. It was one of the best lemon drops I've ever had. The price was $14 so I couldn't get too many of them. Steve, the bartender, was great. He was very personable and engaged in conversations with guests who sat at the counter.

Great service. The buffet was okay. A little too expensive for what they were offering.

You go down a flight of stairs on arrival into a small space with various types of seating. We got the B-side remix and Foggy Notion cocktails which were both fantastic! I also got a pour of Japanese whiskey which was excellent as expected. We got the Wagyu tartar, half a dozen oysters, and the Softshell Crab sando. I am a huge fan of soft-shell crab but this was the best prepared soft-shell crab I've ever had. The service was excellent and everyone was very attentive. The dining room feels cozy without being cramped, with friendly servers who are knowledgeable about the menu and happy to make recommendations. The dishes we tried were flavorful and clearly made with care -- fresh ingredients, thoughtful seasoning, and nice attention to presentation. Portions are generous enough to share, so it's a good spot for a casual dinner with friends or a low-key date night. Cocktails options were well balanced and plenty of Tequila on the menu. A few small things kept this from being a five-star experience: service can slow a bit when the room is not busy. Overall, Carlita's is a solid, friendly restaurant with reliably good food and a comfortable vibe. I'd go back and would recommend it to anyone looking for a pleasant dining experience in Portland.

Loyal Legion is that kind of place, with the sort of dark, woody vibe that screams legacy, but without the pretension or airs. The tap list is long, deep and well-curated with mostly local taps, and their whisky wall is very well stocked indeed. Cocktail program is robust, the menu is a hearty mix of drinking food (brats and pretzels) and pub grub (burgers and fries) with sandos and salads thrown in for balance.
