They had some good apps on HH and I'm not sure what alcohol was on special as I'm pregnant... but they had a few nice mocktails under $10. A group of 4 of us dined inside in a booth. For food, we ordered the brussels & beet salad for the table. I ordered the chicken sandwich and my husband ordered the steak frites, which we shared. The steak frites is mostly fries.. there were steak pieces covered in a tasty chimichurri sauce. The steak was just OK but it was only a $15 plate. The chicken sandwich was hearty, and did not come with a side so it was good to have an abundance of fries sitting next to me. I really enjoy this spot because of the vibe it's lowkey, cozy, and has that bar-meets-lounge feel. Definitely a nice place if you're out on a date or just want a relaxed night out. The food is surprisingly good! The first time I had the steak and fries, and the second time I tried the mac and cheese both were satisfying and well done. Drinks are affordable, and the bartenders pour heavy, which is always a plus. The only downside is that they don't have tap-to-pay, but outside of that, it's a solid spot I'll keep coming back to. read more

Because it was happy hour, I think my drink was 50 cents off the regular price. Maybe not. 50 cents? Really? The cocktail tasted good, but the bartender's attitude made it anything but enjoyable. I have been a customer here since it opened and it has been a comfort place , usually, as far as drinks , and service , but the service has gone way way down hill . In particular Jade the bartender. She has been nasty , down right nasty . More than once . Last time though . I was here November 2nd and she was like yeah we aren't seaving anymore it's past time cause of the time change. Good little place to grab a drink and a bite. The bartender when we went in seemed overwhelmed and messed up our drinks a couple of times, maybe they needed a barback!They didn't really seem properly made according to the menu, but it was busy and they were by themselves so no harm no fail, they were still very yummy! The food was really good and the chimichurri steak and frites (fries) were very tender, not soggy, and delicious. The place itself was very cute, dimly lit and well decorated. It was nice outside so many people chose to be outside making the inside very quiet. You're supposed to bus your own table, which I never love doing but it's common for bars around here, and it's not the biggest deal for this price point. Would recommend and will be back! read more

It's not just the fact that GDM has a pretty damn solid happy hour but they also manage to provide a killer aesthetic to accompany your well-priced drinks (though prices on said libations seem to have gone up since we were last there). Inside it's dark and cozy with a small bar upfront and lots of wood and leather in the back room, stuffed with vintage-y furniture that feels vaguely retro but not forced - a nice balancing act, IMO. It seems like Gold Dust recently (or at least finally?) upgraded/tweaked its food/drinks menu as well. I could be wrong but it feels that way, since the special verde fries we had (that day only) were so beyond what we've had in the past...like next level, with a perfectly crisped outside and served with a heap of addictively spicy jalapeño-pocked sauce. Chicken gyro wrap was also a hit, and the food in general is just a nice step up from the usual nachos-and-tots pub fare, so that's always a bonus in my book. The drinks are usually on point (but like anywhere, can vary) and service this time out was stellar as well, so bravo to the staff for making our evening drama free. Met up with my ladies for Happy Hour at this fine establishment. My vegan friend was super happy upon entering due to a chalk board special of Vegan Mac. We ordered drinks from the lovely bartender (I think her name was Carrie) and sat down in a super comfy, round booth to wait on our joiners. Every table has a menu on it, so don't steal the one from the bar. I noticed their great selection of specialty cocktails, and almost immediately regreted ordering my usj (Hornitos Negroni). I eventually ordered the Ginger Snap, but with tequila. LOVED IT!!! The bar has a lot of options (including green and yellow Chartreuse) as well as great prices on their tequila. Let's talk about the food. Vegan Mac - MY HOMIE WAS OVER THE MOON!!! She absolutely loved the vegan mac. She has always said that macaroni and cheese is the one thing she misses as a vegan. I'm sooo glad that this did not disappoint. When the chef brought out our other food, we had to inquire on how he was able to achieve such a delicious vegan cheese sauce. (::whispers:: It's totally a secret.) Regular Mac, add bacon and tomatoes - My other homie was in absolute love with her mac as well. At first, she wanted the burger (it did look really good), but settled on the mac. Needless to say, she did not regret her decision. Beet Salad - The beet salad was full of beets, and my homegirl was definitely happy. I fully expected there to be big slices of beets, but there was a healthy serving of cubed purple beets and golden beets. I'm not a huge fan of beets, but I would totally consider order this salad. The Trio - I got the grilled cheese, tomato soup, and salad combo. The salad was delicious. I loved the added pepitas. The grilled cheese was meh... despite it being parmesan crusted. And the tomato soup was more like tomato paste. I sincerely do not think I would order it again. Fries with a side of cheese sauce - I've said it multiple times, but I'm gonna say it again: EVERY PLACE THAT SERVES FRIES SHOULD ALSO SERVE CHEESE SAUCE. Okay, now that we've gotten that out of the way (one of my 4 "Jenn For President" platforms)... the fries are good. The cheese sauce makes them even better. The inside of the bar looks a lot better than the outside. We got in and the bartender was promptly attentive and told us to go to any seating and order through the counter. I got the girl talk which is a cocktail with the grapefruit and it was good. The grapefruit didn't come all the way through but the hint of it was there. We got the Korean barbecue wings, lemon pepper wings fries and the burger. The burger was pretty well done and didn't really have any juice left in it and the bacon on it was basically burnt to a Chris which I usually like but it was way too salty. The meat texture of the wings was slightly strange to me. Every time I was eating it for some reason I kept thinking of string cheese texture and taste. We stopped by for drinks after dinner at Farmhouse Thai. We had a group of 5 and sat outside. First thing our bartender says is "we charge 20% gratuity for parties of 5 or more." Ummm, okay. Weird. 5 is a weird number of people to charge automatic gratuity and also weird, that's the first thing you tell us as we sit down. We usually give 20% anyways as tip but that being the first thing that is said as we sit down is completely off-putting. Also clearly on every single page (see my photos) it says 20% gratuity included for groups of 6 OR MORE. We just got five shots of whiskey. And asked for coke backs. We got the bill and it was 20% gratuity added, and she charged us for coke backs (I have never been charged for coke backs with whiskey shots). My uncle nicely brought it up to the waitress, and she just kept saying "she's always been told it's 5 or more." Weird that someone that works there was "trained" so incorrectly, or has never taken the time to look at the menu where every single page has their policy on the bottom of the page. Seriously though, it was the principal of it all. Again, we would've more than happily given 20% tip but the whole experience was crap. In a nut shell, my friend and I came here because their website says their happy hour goes until 8 pm every day. When I arrived it was 6:07 pm and the bartender would not honor happy hour prices for me because she said it ended at 6 pm "Our new covid happy hour end time". Like a true "Karen" I argued that their website says 8 pm. She knew that and said they hadn't had time to update that. Uh, what?? It's covid and everyone was closed down for a while and even now, they can only be at half capacity, so how busy can they be?? She claimed that it is very expensive to update their website. Okaaaaay... so how about changing updating their voicemail to reflect that, since theirs is the generic mailbox one. Or how about posting about that on their Facebook page?? Not happy at all, I asked to speak with the manager. Turns out, she was the manager. I continued to argue that they should honor what their website says and she claims she can't input happy hour prices after 6 pm. So?? I've worked in the restaurant industry. I know you can make things happen. Just charge me for one item and then just tell the cook my 2nd item (free of charge so the pricing works out). Or offer me a free app the next time I come in before 6 pm. Anything! I'm easy and would have been happy with almost anything. What she did is make my drink and then mumble ("It's on me") as she walked away. Well, that was a good start. Except that she charged my friend full price for her 3 happy hour items and glass of wine because she didn't ring it in until after 6 pm, even though my friend had beat me there and was ordering her food at 5:50 pm. Seriously, what a racket! While I do love their garlic green beans, and came there just for those, I think I can learn to make them at home so I don't have to deal with this nonsense again. As I sat and drank my free drink (a yellowish slushy ting that didn't taste like it had any alcohol in it), I pulled their website up on my phone, to show my friend that it really says happy hour goes until 8 pm... and instead, their site got hacked and now goes directly to a Viagra sales site. For a brief second it showed their site and I screen shot it, but it then went right to the Viagra site and I wasn't able to get it back to their home page. The inside is super cute, but my friends and I decided to grab a seat outside when we stopped by today since it was such a nice day in Portland! It is open seating so you seat yourself and the staff will come help you. (It is a 21+ place). My friends and I came during happy hour and decided to get a couple things to share. We got the daily soup which was a tomato bisque, arugula artichoke dip, Brussels sprout, classic Mac, and their Jamaican jerk chicken wings! * Daily Soup- Went really well with the grilled baguettes that it came with! Full of flavor. * Arugula artichoke dip- The dip came with fried cheesy pita breads to dip with! The 2 went together really well and it tastes amazing when the pita bread was hot! * Brussels sprout- caramelized really well and they were all big pieces and it came with a roasted garlic olio sauce to dip in! * Classic mac- super cheesy Mac and cheese that had potato chips on top instead of bread crumbs. The food menu accommodates most any palette. I really enjoyed the portobello sandwich after a day of hiking, it really hit the spot. However, you won't find it on the happy hour menu. My go-to happy hour item is the trio. The trio is a yummy, gooey-good grilled cheese sandwich served with a rich tomato soup that's perfect for dunking said sandwich and a light side salad. The well drinks are nothing special just $.50 off. I always indulge in a couple of their specialty cocktails. Last time I tried the Watermelon Blade which, on a very warm afternoon was quite refreshing. Next I had an old favorite, the Bleeding Heart, made with Indio Blood Orange Vodka and the final touch an edible hibiscus flower. The flower after marinating in all that alcohol is really quite delicious. The People: The best bartenders in Hawthorne. Friendly staff. The Drinks: - Bleeding Heart (indio blood orange vodka, maraska, lime, edible hibiscus flower): This was a pretty strong drink. I loved it. Ate the hisbiscus flower last. - Rum and Diet Coke: It was more rum than Diet Coke, hence, more value for your buck. - Water: The H2O is pretty solid and essential for hydration. The Food: - Burger with Fries: The burger was good, but the fries are really really good. I am a picky fries person, and these fries certainly make the cut. The Venue: I sat at the bar, and also a table. I liked the vibe. Great music selection. This was one of my favorite places to hang out by myself. Did a catch up HH here. Pretty darn good!!! We had not been here before, but the peeps who suggested it, had. I didn't know it had been there that long as it was. Lived and hung out a lot in lower SE 90's-00's. Very cool atmosphere w/ the midcentury modern. Seating was very comfortable, and staff very friendly. HH food was good!!! Nibbles to share, but I did more talking and drinking than eating!!! (like I said, CATCHING UP!) It looked like they had a bustling patio (hottest day of the year so far!) but lots of seating on the inside, which is where we wanted to be in some A/C, which felt very nice. So my only complaint was that, that after arriving at 4pm, they only had ordering from the bar, so there was a line, and so the cashier was taking the orders, then pouring beer. Then a food runner. I've been a regular at this place for awhile, although it's like weekly regular instead of everyday regular anymore. But they just started doing brunch this year, which they've long threatened to do to me and my bank account, and honestly I couldn't be happier about it. The bar's regular amenities - the covered back patio, the sidewalk seating for people-watching, the lack of children, the big inside booths - shine under the glaring hangover light of brunch. I've spent many a Sunday summer morning on the back patio in complete disarray, sipping my breakfast whiskey (which is just any whiskey I drink before noon), chain smoking and pretending I could read my phone with my sunglasses on. As one does. Aside from me being a mess, my two favorite things about brunch at Gold Dust are the seating and the food. With its plentiful seating options, you won't have to wait in line for brunch, probably even for large groups. I know people in Portland like waiting in lines, but I just can't do it anymore at my age, and I don't want to. I don't want to do it, ever. My phone doesn't have the battery capacity for it, and my hips, while they don't lie, start to get creaky after just a few consecutive minutes of standing. My shoes aren't that comfortable, either. I know there is some correlation between how long you have to wait in line for brunch and how good the food is, but I find the correlation to be weak and often disappointing. In this case, there is no correlation. (Or would it be a negative correlation? I don't know; I'm not a scientist.) The food here can easily match any of your 45-minute-wait brunch places, and it's probably cheaper. My favorite thing on the menu is the spinach frittata. It's all about those caramelized onions and pretending to be healthy by eating something non-beige like spinach. But to offset that with more beige, you can get a side of roasted potatoes for $2, and it's a lot of potato. And if I'm going to eat potatoes, I'm going to need a side of mushroom gravy for them, naturally. A side of gravy doesn't hurt, right? Even with the biscuits and gravy, which comes with two biscuits so large I have never been able to finish them, extra gravy seems smart. If I end up with too much gravy after all is said and done, I have a spoon and a complete lack of fucks to give. I've had every veg thing on the menu, but I hear the meat stuff is great too. My friend swears by the chicken & biscuits, which is a giant mess of fried chicken, bacon, eggs, gravy, and biscuits. She doesn't speak or take a breath until the plate is clean, which can be a little alarming to witness. There's also a whole menu of breakfast cocktails I haven't tried because I drink too fast to enjoy nice things. If you've ever had anything from their regular cocktail menu, you probably know you can't go wrong with any of them. The brunch menus are available until 2pm, which gives me plenty of time to sleep in and still get my gravy fix. There is nothing worse than going out to brunch somewhere with your slow-ass tardy friends and watching the servers switch from brunch to lunch menus while you curl up into a ball and die from gravy starvation. Why is gravy only a brunch and dinner thing? Why can't we have gravy for lunch? The chef who successfully incorporates gravy into their lunch menu will forever have my respect, but I haven't seen it happen yet. As a side note for this place in general, if you go to the bathrooms here, don't turn the faucet on anywhere past halfway toward the hot side. Classy, old Hollywood feel. It's sexy. Great date place. The lighting is fantastic, the booths are close and quiet, and you don't see the other patrons much. The drink menu is quirky. I ordered the Obamagranate and was pleased. The food is delish, and fast too. I ordered the arancini, and the caesar. The arancini was fried balls of cheesy goodness-- nicely done, but these also aren't hard to make. The caesar is one of the metersticks (sorry, I know the saying is yardstick, but I'm a science nerd) by which I judge cafes. I also look intently at eggs benedict, gravy, cream soups, toast, and scones. But I digress. The caesar was great! My cousin suggested this place when we first arrived in town, but it was super crowded with no seating, so we ended up heading over to Belmont. We tried again a few days later, and were able to get seats for three of us. Mi prima got the special which was fries with flank steak and blue cheese sauce; the bf got jalapeno hot wings, and I tried Clams with chorizo and chick peas. We shared everything (which is why I love going to eat with them!). The blue cheese sauce was pretty heavy and overpowered the fries, but the steak was really tasty. The wings weren't especially spicy but they were crispy and still yummy. The clams were pretty bland, even with the broth. I was a bit disappointed with them and no one else was impressed either. In fact, I ended up eating most of them, since I ordered it. We left a bone-yard of chicken wings, so I would definitely get those again. read more
