Terra Mae is one of the best restaurants in Portland. It is a fusion between Japanese and Portuguese cuisine. Located inside Cascada, it's the perfect place to end a spa day. The restaurant itself is beautiful - elegant, upscale, gorgeous mural done by local artist, Blaine Fontana, and perfect for a special occasions! A huge shoutout to our server, Heidi, who was incredibly knowledgeable and helped guide us through the menu. The enoki mushrooms and the hot buns were standouts and are a must-order. We were also tempted by the udon, tartare and crudo but ran out of room, so they're already on the list for my next visit. The yellowtail was excellent, clean and fresh. Wish we leaned into the raw menu more. Note to self. Octopus salad was too citrusy for me, my friend loved it, so that's on my taste, not the kitchen. The lamb spare ribs missed. Mostly fat, the kind that never rendered down, and dry where there was actual meat. I left most of it untouched, and no one at the table ever caught it, small thing, but for a place this attentive to detail everywhere else, it stood out. Then the dessert thing happened. Birthday, server offers to treat us at the start of the meal. When it's time, she walks us through the menu, we get excited about the strawberry mochi cake, thinking it'll make up for the ribs. Nope. Turns out the treat was one specific dessert, the sweet potato cake, no other option. Kind gesture, weird way to land it. Left still hungry, wings and jojos at Jacks down the street fixed that. They had very creative cocktails and a wide selection of small plates that everyone could try what they wanted. Their portions were not too big but also not too small, perfect for sharing. So good. In the running for top meal of the year and that's a high bar. Everything from start to finish was great. The service was on point but not pushy with great recommendations for first timers. The ambiance was cool and airy grounded with greenery and that mural. The food was nothing short of amazing. We had the croquettes, yellow fin crudo, octopus salad, fries, udon noodles, and scallops. We would skip the octopus salad but that was just to try something different not an indictment of the dish. The others we would have a terrible time missing next time. The croquettes were the best we've had and that includes Barcelona. The udon noodles were spicy and creamy and near perfect. The fries were so elevated with the spices and chili oil aioli. The scallops were so well executed and that yellow fin crudo was expertly done. Even the little pork buns were bursting with flavor with the exact amount of crunch and texture from the pan. Everything was top notch and so thoughtfully conceived and prepared. A true chef designed menu. We will be back to this interesting take on Portuguese Asian fusion. This unique Portuguese-Japanese fusion spot is located on the 2nd floor of the Cascade Hotel and Wellness Spa. Reservations are highly recommended and hard to come by, so plan accordingly. To get here, street parking will be your main option. Inside, they have a gorgeous and dimly lit setup with tons of seating. For their menu, they have a range of unique items to choose from. The restaurant is beautiful and the service was great but we were a bit underwhelmed by the food. We've heard great reviews and also mixed reviews from friends that have dined here, so we wanted to try it out for ourselves. The small plates were good, such as the bread + butter, fries and green bean tempura. The bread comes with two milk buns and three small schmears of butter. The fries were well seasoned and came with a nice dipping sauce. The tempura was really light, crisp and flavorful. We were interested in getting the tonkatsu also, but didn't get it since they didn't allow for adjustments/substitutions but heard good things about that. For the entrees, we got the duck duck rice, lobster bao and scallops mozambique. The duck duck rice had a nice crust at the top and overall was ok. I desired more spice or some sort of sauce to drizzle on it. The lobster and caviar bao sounded good in theory but I felt like the bao buns took away from the flavor of the lobster and caviar so we ended up not eating the buns with it. The seared scallops were served with grits and I thought the scallops were nicely seared. The dish was rich and creamy but due to personal preference, I felt it needed something to add a pop of freshness or acidity. The rice custard with sugar crust dessert we had was reminiscent of crème brûlée. This is my second time booking at Terra Mae for a special event. I booked online and got a reservation at the time I wanted. I put in a special note regarding the event for my party. When we arrived, the staff made us feel welcome by bringing my guest a drink on the house for their retirement celebration. I knew the menu but tried some new things! We shared everything. My favorite item I have to order each time is the Tuna Tartar. Its favors are rich but delicate. The presentation is perfect and my guest was impressed. I got the dumplings for her but if I had to skip something I'd do those. They were good but compared to all the other items we had, they were lacking. The only thing not pictured is our wagu braised with sweet potato. That was phenomenal. It pulled apart and melted in your mouth with every bite. We ended with two very different deserts, the strawberry mochi and whipped crem brûlée type desert. Both were tasty. Price range for all plus three alcoholic drinks was $165 not including tip. The restaurant is on the second floor & the interior was beautiful, but the service was mixed. The hostesses were super knowledgeable about the menu item & gave us recommendations, but our server was lacking. The food was delicious but on the pricier side. We got the mentaiko udon, dumplings, duck duck rice, and the lobster bao. It took an hour for all four dishes to come out. Apparently there was a separate menu for dessert that the servers offer after the meal but our server never offer to us. We were promptly greeted and seated, and the space is beautiful -- bright, with colorful murals and plenty of room between tables. Came on a double date, and had made a reservation in advance which I would recommend because it was a full house on a week night. My favorite items of the visit were the sake selection, the whole fried snapper (best bite - amazing), the tuna tartare with furikake chips and caviar, and the super tender beef cheek. The mushroom small plate was also pretty good! I didn't like as much the milk buns, they were just ok and I only liked 1 (rooftop grown chive) of the 3 butter shmears it came with. Wasn't woth $6 per bun. While it was a quality cut of meat, the Snake River Wagyu steak dish needed salt and the sauce below it wasn't as flavorful. Perhaps needed cracked black peppercorn, or something to punch up that flavor. I wasn't as impressed with the octopus salad either. Very scant thin tiny octopus slices on top salad greens with lots of sliced raw bell peppers. You'd think it should be called a bell pepper salad with the amount it had in it, instead of the hard-to-find octopus! I couldn't detect a flavor note of the dressing either. Other dishes we tried were lobster bao buns and the seared scallop on jalepeno grits... they were ok but lacked a little flavor. I could not taste the jalepeno on the scallop dish, and the lobster slices were fairly scant and not very succulent. We split the strawberry mochi cake for dessert and it was fun that they added Pop Rocks on top, but the mochi was too tough and dense. A chiffon cake or something light would've been a nicer alternative to end a rich dinner. Service was excellent, and each person who spoke to us or delivered a dish was beautiful & friendly. Be prepared to share dishes when you come here, about 2/3 per person. Prices are on the higher side but I think it matches with the sophisticated ambiance and quality of food. Instead of traveling over July 4th weekend, I spent a whole day at Cascada: breakfast and coffee at Alberta Street Cafe, time in the soaking pools and a massage at their spa, followed up by a belated birthday celebration dinner at Terra Mae. We were placed at a high table with a step-up into the booth seating, so if you need a certain type of table for accessibility reasons it might be worth calling ahead. The staff was able to thoroughly explain the menu and each dish, both when we asked questions while ordering as well as when each dish came out. Service was well-timed. Between two of us, we ordered: -Milk buns -Wasabi salad (maybe my favorite actually) -Black cod fish & chips (good but normal) -Hand roll of the day -Teres major -Two desserts, a mochi and an olive oil cake (one was comped for the bday - very kind) -Cafe de Arroz (not my palate's preference) It was a good amount of food. I am not much of a bread and carb girl, I would rather save my appetite for the main course, but honestly, these rules were some of the best I've ever had. Their pairing after their three different butters, including their duck butter was to die for. We also got some of their sashimi the o' Toro and it just melted in my mouth. Every dish was pretty good, with the Fisherman's Stew, Milk Buns, and Croquettes standing out above the others. The Fisherman's tasted similar to a Thai curry and had a wide selection of seafood--good if you want to split a main seafood dish between two people. The different butters that came with the Milk Buns were the stars of that dish, and Croquettes had a great ratio of sausage to carbs. We had literally no bad dishes. The service was mostly some of the best we've had in a while but the waitress was a bit deceptive towards the end so that's the reason for the four stars. She was going over the free birthday treats and she said "we usually don't include this but there's Basque cheesecake with ube" which we took it as free because she listed it along with the other free items. After we finished most of the cheesecake, she came back and asked have we decided on the free birthday treat, so we were mad confused, like what? At that point, we felt obligated to get another "free" dessert. But why ask us for dessert twice? It felt super sneaky and maybe she was trying to squeeze some more tip out of us? Terra Mae is really, REALLY great! Miss The Underground? Come here to see 90% of the same staff. Terra Mae was started by the head chef of The Underground, and most of the old staff being here speaks volumes. Ambiance is bright, bustling, and a bit overwhelming, if I'm to be honest. The music is too loud, in my opinion, but it wasn't enough to prevent conversation at a reasonable volume level. The staff is superb! They really excel at taking care of patrons, and are extremely knowledgeable and professional. We were very grateful for our waitress's recommendations. How was the food? It was excellent on the whole! The biggest standout of the evening was the sashimi sampler special. I had no idea how good sashimi could be, but Terra Mae's is hands down, the BEST I've ever had. My dining companion had the same impression. We both wished they had a full sushi menu because of how great their sashimi was. The octopus salad was equally impressive. After having Terra Mae's, I realized I'd NEVER had properly cooked octopus before. The confit duck legs were also stunning. Insanely tender, crispy skin, and brilliant flavor. The one disappointment was with the milk rolls. We had high expectations based on all of the glowing reviews, specifically for these, but ours were nothing noteworthy. They tasted like plain old ordinary, dry, chain grocery store bakery rolls. The accompaniments were great (orange butter anybody?), but they were ultimately disappointing. I booked our table through Resy, but our evening started with a small hiccup--my husband's flight was delayed about 1.5 hours. The Tonkatsu was the best thing we ordered. I was kind of disappointed in the beef cheeks. It was melt in your mouth tender. But it had this beef stew, flavored quality that I just made. Thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience at Terra Mae a handful of weeks ago. The interior pictures do not do this place justice on the amount of skylights are in it to make it airy and inviting. As for the food - we were impressed with everything, I especially loved the duck duck (crispy) rice! The variation in food choices can potentially make people hesitate although we joined the right couple who knew exactly what they wanted. It was fun dining between 4 although nice restaurants such as these always have to make the bread/carb offerings so small. Admittedly, we were still a little peckish after our meal so we went to another spot for a nightcap beer. I had a not so good experience at this restaurant. We got the Tonkastu sandwich and with our servers recommendation we got the Japanese curry to go with it. The sandwich itself was good, but the Japanese curry was the worst. It was so watery and flavorless. yuck. I asked the server if the Japanese curry was supposed to taste like this because I've had it before and it tasted nothing like this. She says to me that I must not have good taste if I don't like it. I was floored! Girl! Anyways she told the kitchen and they were side eyeing me all night and someone even tried it and rolled their eyes. It was a crazy experience. Now onto whatever else I had which wasn't very memorable in the first place. We had the black cod fish and chips which was fine, wouldn't get it again. The atmosphere and ambiance is really nice. The hostess was very personable and came by our table to chit chat which we found very sweet. We ordered the octopus salad, Duck Duck rice, Mentaiko Udon, Scallops, Alcatra, and the mochi dessert. Everything is meant to be served as shareable plates family style. I really enjoyed the Duck Duck rice and the Mentaiko Udon. The Alcatra was very tender and the seasoning reminded me of pho. Octopus is one of my favorite foods but the salad was average. What a gem! I've been on a Yuzu kick and the cocktail they offer definitely satisfied. It was perfect after a hot steam. I wasn't big on the Linguica Croquettes, but others seem to like them. Good crunch and sauce though. The Black Cod Fish & Chips isn't your run of the mill kind. You immediately taste the quality. Comes with a tasty Yuzu dip, but also an elevated price. The Tonkatsu rivals the best versions around town. Mochi-type dessert was densly tasty. Dishes are presented with an eye for detail. The dining room fills quickly. UGH! Love this place. The drinks + food is incredible. The ambiance makes you feel cooler when you walk in. The bartenders were very friendly and chatty. It's the perfect way to end a sessions after Cascada at the spa. read more

Terra Mae definitely lived up to the rave reviews it had been getting thus far. Came in on a Tuesday evening with some friends to try it out, and we had an amazing meal. Reservations are available and weren't that hard to get ahead of time which is always a plus in my book. Atmosphere is great. We had been to Cascade once before to enjoy the spa and the dining "vibe" is equally as nice. The space is bright and vibrant while also moody with a lot of low accent lighting to go along with the large natural sky lights. Overall it just felt fresh, and the seating and table settings were also quite nice. Service throughout the night was also very on point. Not too pushy but also attentive and friendly. Felt like we were well taken care of which is all you can ask for. Now on to the food. Everything was tasty. They've crafted a menu of lovely bites that were easy to share and delicious. One note, a lot of the dishes are best split 4 ways so if you have a larger party you may need to order doubles of things. I would say the majority of dishes are on the smaller side...but would encourage going as a group to get to try more items. Standouts for us was definitely the udon, the duck rice, the yellowtail crudo, and the dumplings. It was a fun meal and a really enjoyable experience from start to finish. read more
