I took a set of swimming lessons and enjoyed them; however, when a rep recently called and left a message to inquire about membership possibilities-- ugh, nope! Here are a few reasons for not joining this club: 1. I read the Yelp reviews, and it is never a good idea to have difficulty cancelling membership; 2. One reviewer is correct-- the chilly indoor lap pool is overcrowded during the 5-ish swim time slot-- with some lessons confined to minute space; 3. Parking is terrible; get some more spaces for goodness sakes and 4. For the monthly price, the equipment should be current. On a positive note, the swim instructor was great, swim safety is taught, and the non-member cost for swim lessons is cheaper than being a member with an added lesson cost [cheaper by 5-9 bucks]. I took my son here for swim lessons. He's fearful of the water and everything went fine for weeks until his instructor had to miss a day. The fill in took the kids to 3 feet and had a completely different class that was not meant for beginners. (Kids were jumping in from the side for example. Also it was in 3 feet, my kid was the smallest and he's barely 3 feet tall. All the other kids were ready for it but my 3 foot son was not. I talked to the substitute instructor and he dismissed me. So I talked to someone in their office who said they'd give me a free makeup day but that never happened. I never went back. read more

the facility itself is ok. The equipment and locker rooms seem antiquated, but is almost always working, which is better than most gyms that have a lot of broken items. I attempted to cancel via email, and was told I had to send a certified letter to them to get a cancel form, which makes no sense that the email could not be used for this. Building maintenance and improvements are ongoing. Only the parking and litter are my complaint. Since the gym is so popular, it is difficult to find parking at certain times. I have been a member for over a decade now. When I first joined, the experience was great. Staff was friendly, knowledgeable and was always ready/available to help. They made meaningful updates to the facility and equipment and still charged reasonable rates. However, things started to change as new management/staff changed (this happens from time to time) but it never quite recovered. They still offer classes (but you run into the group cliques). The machines are nice but there are definitely better models out there (I've seen offered at hotels in my travels). The equipment is not serviced as much as it should be (considering the amount of people in there) and the pool is a challenge to get open lanes at convenient times when it is not under maintenance. The parking is a nightmare (plain and simple) and the check-in process needs some serious updates. But the most important thing for me is that the energy in the place is not the same. All of that other stuff could be overlooked but if you don't have a good positive vibe, it doesn't really work. The staff (definitely not all) are not approachable, the changes made seem random and geared towards bottom lines - I don't feel like a member anymore - I feel like a customer. There are plenty of other places nearby that offer decent equipment and the vibe/energy is off the charts (for a fraction of price). Wow, I haven't done a review yet. Been going to Sport Fit for at least ten years. Laurel & now Bowie for about the last 5 or so. Pros: pools (indoor, heated therapy, outdoor), hot tub & steam room. Wide variety of included aqua exercise classes. Decent weight room. Plenty of cardio machines. Mostly all of the staff is very helpful and friendly. Overall clean. Several locker room areas. Pools are kept up nicely. Racquetball leagues, tennis leagues, basketball court, yoga, aerobics, personal training, just check their website they have quite an extensive list of activities. Some are included some there might be an extra charge. Cons: I've run across two staff members (both near the pool & both women, one was a swim instructor the other must of been in charge of something) both VERY rude to me, for zero reason.....I haven't seen either in several months. Maybe it caught up with them. Parking can be tight during peak hours. I would take a star off for those 2 employees, but I won't hold it against SF. Overall it is the best option around. read more

Sport Fit Bowie is an excellent gym in the area. I particularly like them for these reasons: 1. Swimming pool! The indoor pool is heated and has great exercise classes. My favorite part is the swimming classes for the kids. For the price (member and non member), you can get excellent instruction. It can get crowded with a lot of students but a good deal just the same for the price and length of time (30 min) 2. Friendly community! It feels like a family when you join Sports Fit Bowie. Most of the members have been there for years and enjoy the small yet big gym (as in the size of the facilities) feel 3. Down side to having committed members is that the the equipment is a little bit older, especially in the exercises classes BUT the instructors really make up for it. With the family atmosphere the instructors take the time to know you and constantly monitor you to do the right thing to prevent injuries. 4. Bathroom facilities are amazing! I call to freeze my 4 memberships (Family of 4) and they promptly tell me that I have to physically come in to freeze of cancel my membership...then the dude tells me to just pull up in the parking lot and we will come out to your car. WTF? Why don't you make a form on your website so that members can freeze their membership...the same way you can log on to pay for a class or activity. If you can authenticate my identity online to take my money...funny i have to physically come in and go through all this BS too KEEP YOU from taking it. I've been taking water aerobics classes there for several years. Every year the summer is the same. They oversell swim lessons and schedule them at the same time as the aqua classes. Beginning this year they started restricting the depth of the water for aqua classes to two lanes instead of the usual three. No only does this restrict the amount of space for class but it also impacts the depth of the water. The water is only 4 feet deep as opposed to the 5 feet people are used to having. This greatly impacts people with knee injuries and taller individuals. The whole point of exercising in the water is to take the pressure off your knees yet by reducing the water depth they are taking that away. When I've complained about this I've been told that my bad knees are my problem, not there's. I was told when I first joined that the club was 'senior friendly' but that definitely is not true any longer. During the summer months and weekend, it is overrun by kids. Parking is awful too. Signed my daughters up for swimming lessons here. The staff has was very responsive and helpful when signing up. At first I was interested in a membership, but after reading the reviews here about how hard it is to cancel, I decided not to. Anyway they enrolled in swimming as non members and the instructor was patient, fun, and engaging with the kids. It was a small class, about 5 of them. The only thing I didn't like was the pool they had class in was too crowded. I was a little irritated at paying hundreds of dollars for my kids to have swimming lessons, and they only have a few feet of area to practice in, bumping into each other. One side of them was another swim class, the other side was family swim, when the general public can use the pool. They roped off the pool to separate family swim from the classes, but people still disregarded the rope and swam in the side that was reserved for classes and it wasn't being enforced by staff. They should schedule classes better and close the pool from the public when people have paid for lessons. The lack of space and having to share the pool with so many other people was distracting and not beneficial to the classes. Other than that the facility could use upgrades but it was fine. My girls enjoyed it. read more

Shortly after signing up, I called the facility to cancel my contract with them. I was told that the representative I spoke to would "take note and handle the cancellation" for me. 9 1/2 months later I received a letter in the mail stating I owed over $1000 to the facility. When following up with the office manager, I was basically called a liar as "All employees know the cancellation policy and would never accept it over the phone". I've never worked out in the facility but have accumulated a ridiculous amount of fees due to one of their reps negligence. It's quite unfair and very disappointing. I have been a member here for a little over a year and I love it!! I used to be a member at Gold in Crofton and left because Sport Fit has better facilities for my entire family!! My daughter can participate in fitness activities for children as well as the daycare services with her membership!! I can sign her in for babysitting and have sign her in for a class; they will come get her for the class and take her back to the babysitting group! I love it! She can also participate in Family swim hours as well as the outdoor swimming facilities when the season opens!! One drawback to me about the swimming facilities, is that children are permitted in the "girls locker room" and only the girls locker room. However, older women are ALWAYS in the "girls locker room" even though there is another locker room just for adult women in the pool area! It aggravates me because at times, it is packed full of women and we can't get in and out of the locker room efficiently! I think they should address this because other parents that I have talked to have complained about the same thing! So if you have a child, be prepared for a lot of women to be in the "girls locker room!" The classes are amazing!! They have many classes that meet at many different times!! I love it!! And the cardio equipment and weights are up to date and are great!! The best time to go, if you can is the middle of the day or later in the evening!! I recently cancelled by membership for the following reasons: 1. They charge a premium (platinum) membership for tennis courts and yet can't guarantee a court when you need, surprisingly it is always booked -especially in the evenings. 2. The front desk cannot resolve any issues for you, they don't have the autonomy. Often times there are false promises to call back when the counselor is available. Or, you are made to hold on phone or wait in the lobby till eternity for the counselor to show up till you are tired and you leave the place yourself 3. The membership fee is at the discretion of the counselor. There is no logic as to why your friend/neighbor may be charged a lesser monthly membership fee than what you pay, while both of you may have joined around the same time. They quote one offer or the other to validate; which is rubbish! 4. They don't have a tie up with corporates like 'gympass.com' that your organization may have a tie up with and you get the benefit of a subsidized norminal membership rate. Note: Gympass works with LA-fitness, GoldsGym and the likes. Now, the reasons for my anguish and this feedback... WAS CHARGED MEMBERSHIP FOR 2 MONTHS POST CANCELLATION: Imagine, if I hadn't checked my statement. Please watch out! I was charged on my card for 2 months despite having cancelled my monthly membership. I have a feeling this was purposely done since I didn't get along with a particular counselor at SportFit'. When I took the call to cancel my membership, I was told by the counselor that cancellation will only work if I agreed to pay the next month's fee. I had to relent. I know that he could have waived that if he wanted to. There was no 'will'. Despite paying for additional month, that I was charged membership for 2 more months until I checked my credit card statements. Repeated calls to front desk got me no resolve but incessantly long wait times on phone, repeated promises for a call-back from one of the counselors - but nothing, I was even asked to come in person since that's probably the only way to reach the counselor. "Come meet in person"; I did, but the counselor left for the day and no one but only the counselor could resolve this. This is not the way a member for 5 years should to be treated and definitely not the way an organization has to be run. It left a bad taste and i was determined not to recommend this place to anyone else. After I left some threats, I was connected to the general manager who helped reverse the charges. However, there was a $10 credit that I had overpaid for a lesson, which the GM promised he will leave a note to his staff and that credit can be used against my child's membership/lessons in the future. He also requested me to give him and SF one more opportunity to win-back and correct things. Which I did! When I went back to make a payment for my child's lesson today at SportFit and reminded the front desk of the note from their 'General Manager' about the $10 they owe us; the front desk staff responded: "No, we don't see any notes. You will have to talk to our counselor regarding that and he is not available at the moment". I should have expected the familiar response, shouldn't I? :) read more

Terrible value for the hefty monthly fee. Heavily focused on tennis and swimming- so if those are your sports you may enjoy this gym. If you are looking for modern cardio and weight machines and high quality group fitness this is not the place for you. If you are looking for a fresh, polished, modern gym with a good positive vibe- this is not the place. The weight room is cavernous and windowless, and was too hot to enjoy my workout. The worst part is the management's refusal to let you cancel your membership. Most gyms let you cancel and you pay a cancellation fee. This evening I went in to take my son to swim lessons. While I was there I wanted to see if I could use their gym for an hour (I am not a member)so I inquired about a guest pass since my son and husband are members and my son currently takes swim lessons there. When I arrived at the front desk I simply asked if I could workout as a guest under my husbands membership. That's a simple yes you can or no you can't, instead a manager was called to the front and when I explained to him that I was just trying to see if I can workout as a guest for an hour. He replied "we can't move memberships from one person to another". That is not what I was asking and he seemed to not be interested in even having the conversation, very short. The young lady then said you can pay for a guest pass which is what I feel like should've been said in the beginning vs calling a manager. So I paid $24 to use a stair master for an hour. I will say this, even LA Fitness has day passes for FREE! And even if you have to pay it's normally $10 at the most. I'm a bodybuilding competitor so I've had use gyms all over and paid no more than $10 MAX! Maybe consider letting someone use your gym with a pass especially if they are already paying for other services in your gym! We give you all a good bit of money through memberships and swimming lessons the least you could've done was give a one day pass for an hour of use. I considered being a member along with my husband and son but will no longer do that and will consider removing my son from membership. read more

I was a member for two years and cancelled my membership earlier this year. If you are short on time and don't have time to spend at the gym all day, then this may not be the best option. Gym itself was clean and not the newest, but not necessarily outdated. The structure itself seems old and could probably use some major renovation. There is a slight musty smell, I suspect it's the carpeting that still exists in a lot of the gym. I didn't use the pool but always seemed to be closed for maintenance, etc so may not be convenient for those looking to do laps often. Schedule was available printed on handout or online. The online calendar was difficult to navigate and straight up didn't work for weeks for about a month. Paper handouts were accurate most of the time but sometimes they weren't. Seems like it would be great if they could get to 2018 and try to at least keep things updated on their site. I loved the fitness classes here. Also always had a workout machine available. However, parking was terrible. It was to the point where I had to leave from my place about 5 min away, 30-35 minutes before to just get to my scheduled classes on time. I am definitely not lazy and love to walk, but having to drive around for minutes to find a spot is ridiculous. I realized that a lot of times it was actually non members taking up spots. People who go to practices/games at White Marsh park at the lots closest to the gym instead of the park lots further down. There's no permitting for the gym members, etc so really it's a free for all with parking. The check in process was also antiquated. I've been a member at the Y, LA Fitness, Planet Fitness, and a local gym before I moved to Bowie and they all provided members with a small card to hang on your key chain to scan in when you walk in. Unless they've changed this recently, when I was a member they had every member come up to the desk and give their first and last name. This works in theory. A lot of the time, people are hanging out at the front desk talking to staff or asking long winded questions about memberships, classes, etc. So I had to stand there for a couple of minutes sometimes if someone was there before me to just say my name and walk in. I guess I could've just tried to walk by and not say anything but this was protocol and I wasn't about to have them question me or think that I was a nonmember trying to sneak in. If you were there regularly and they knew you by name, they would check in those people upon seeing them. I was in and out quickly and staff changed a lot so no one knew me by name. This gym just ate a lot of the short time I have because unfortunately I work pretty far. Even on weekends, it was a bit time consuming still having to find parking because of all the weekend sports games going on when nonmembers would park at the gym lots. It does seem family friendly which is great, but if you have little time to work out, having time taken away due to inconveniences (no matter how small they are) really can discourage someone from going here. I found myself dreading getting into my car to battle for a spot 30 min early. So I just ended my membership and am now at a gym where I can be in and out in 45 min, workout included. read more

Bringing this down a couple notches from my previous review for 2 main reasons - parking and noise. It's really tough to find a spot in the evenings on weekdays. While this doesn't usually affect me since I get there earlier, I feel the pain of those folks that get there as I'm leaving. I mean, putting myself in their shoes, it would annoy me - I'm paying to workout inside...if I wanted to exercise outside by walking a mile to and from the car, well, I can do that for free. Also, this really restricts my gym schedule's flexibility since I pretty much don't even bother going if I'm late coming from work because I don't want to deal with the parking craziness. Yes, during these times, they have some poor kid driving around in a golf cart providing rides to and from cars, but I don't think I've seen anyone other than folks with young kids or super old/large ppl on it. It's a matter of pride for crissakes. I, and obviously other folks, would rather just grumble about the trek than get on that thing. Also, the noise level can get outrageous....usually around the same time that parking is crazy (another reason to stay away in the evenings). There are several groups comprised of regulars who must think that yelling at/to each other, often repeating countless times the same things (ex. BOY TRY TO COME AT ME! TRY TO COME AT ME! JUST TRY TO COME AT ME! TRY TO COME AT ME!...continuously for at least 10 mins - this actually happened) makes them look like badasses. It's obnoxious, compounded by the fact that these guys push weights around that are clearly too heavy for them so they deathcry grunt and, after one solitary rep (generally credited to the assistance of a spotter), they flop the weights down so they clatter noisily. Then they proceed to chest bump and talk about how they almost got scouted by the NFL and on and on. Ok, so this may be a chronic epidemic in all gyms everywhere but seriously, all the chatter at the yelling-decibel level combined with the weights being dropped from waist level plus the music that I have cranked up coming thru my earbuds in an attempt to drown out the previously mentioned noises...it's enough to worry about one's eardrums bleeding. Still an ok place to get a workout in if you can beat the evening rush on the weekdays. The weekends are a little calmer (probably because the NFL-almosts exhausted themselves during the week with all the chatting and chestbumping...totally understandable.) read more

***Disclaimer*** I must establish that I do not work for Sport Fit. However, I have a family member that does and I do not write publicity for them. As Keely pointed out, it smells like BO most of the time. This is one of the main reasons why I absolutely hate working out at a gym. It's just nasty. I understand that people are working out and it's a natural thing, but yuck. Also, stay away from the peak hours (before/after work) because it gets really crowded. Aside from the smell, Sport Fit offers a lot of services for any gym-goer. They offer A LOT of tennis classes and camps for tennis players of all skill levels. They have six indoor courts and two outdoor courts. The pros on staff are pretty knowledgeable and everyone that's taken a class I know has been pleased with them. Moreover, they have four racquetball courts and if you're competitive, you can sign up for their racquetball league. Unfortunately, their basketball court is not regulation length, but that doesn't stop the players from turning out in droves to partake in the pickup games. There is also a basketball league (complete with a draft) that runs in the Summer and Fall on Wednesday and Thursday nights. They have a sauna, jacuzzi, inside Olympic-sized swimming pool, kiddie pool and outside pool (with a water-slide). Swimming classes are available as well. For specialty classes, Krav Maga, aerobics and spinning classes are available with the club membership or by paying a tad extra. The Chesapeake Physical Therapy business is located inside Sport Fit as well. They offer massages as well as other physical therapy needs. Finally, they have a large free weight and cardio area. The machines are up-to-date and you know any area wouldn't be complete without the big TVs to watch sports and other news related media. If you live around the area, this is the premier place to work out and if you're a gym rat, socialize. -1 star for the smell. read more

Not a member but was at my sons football practice at field right in front. My 2 year old daughter who we were working on potty training needed to go to bathroom, I did not want her to use the porta-potty so I went asked if she could use the restroom. I explained the situation and was told no because we are not members. I understand they don't want everyone using the athletic fields to go traipsing through their facility but an exception could have been made in the situation. I have been involved with this gym for several years now. My son has taken swim lessons, we've enjoyed relaxing by the outdoor pool, and I've had massages. I love this gym. The staff is always smiling when I walk in, the membership staff is very helpful, and I like the customer appreciation benefits. I rarely have to wait to use equipment. I never hesitate to tell people what a great facility it is. I even ran into Sugar Ray Leonard playing tennis one day.
