We drove an hour to visit on 4th of July and it did not disappoint. Immediately from the car, the building is modern with beautiful landscaping and very clean. There was a small line to order with an easy to understand menu. You round the corner to grab your order and then there are picnic tables in a well maintained grass area. You can watch the ducks roam. The ice cream itself was delicious and we had a hard time ranking our favorites. We tried the vanilla, chocolate, cookies n cream, strawberry rhubarb and lemonade. We will be back for more

Spotted Duck is a gem!! Minutes from Seneca Lake on a beautiful farm it serves the most decadent custard, quaint scenery and welcoming atmosphere. Picnic tables provide a perfect spot to enjoy your treat nestled against fields and the little barn with the cutest ducks. We enjoyed 4 flavors on our visit. I am GF they were very helpful and used a clean scoop to serve my choices. They also had a DF option as well.

We loved spotted duck and have been coming here since it was a little hut with the original owners. It's a fun experience and delicious ice cream! We came on a Friday afternoon and there was plenty of parking and seats at picnic tables. Once we ordered at the window we checked out the ducks as we waited for our ice cream flight to be ready. If you have kids, this is a must! Our 3 year old loved it! Ask for a complimentary cup of food at the window to feed the ducks! Ice cream is creamy and flavorful!

We arrived 15 minutes before closing so it was pretty busy but so worth it to make a trip up this way. We got a eight flight of ice cream but they only had seven flavors so we had to double up on one. I wish we were able to try a different one like from the pints, but they said I could only pick from the seven. I thought it was cool that they had informational signs outside about how the ice cream is made. It had great outdoor seating and cute little ducks outside. Very farm-chic. A girl was feeding the ducks and I said wow! That's really cool and they said yeah if you ask at the window you can get food to feed them which I thought was really awesome. My daughters loved doing that. The chocolate flavors were our favorite.

I had been wanting to try this place for months and am so glad I finally was able to. Flights come in 4 or 8 and there were six flavors so we got a double scoop and a flight of 4. All the flavors were delicious though the fudgie wudgie, lavender, and cookies and cream were standout flavors. There's parking in the front and more in the back. I loved the back area with the picnic tables. We sat right next to the ducks whom were lovely company. A must stop if you're in the area but also worth the drive!

So happy we were able to try spotted duck while we were vacationing up at Keuka lake. They really have a wonderful establishment and I can see why it is so popular. And custard made w duck eggs?? Definitely a win! We pulled up to a fairly busy Tuesday but there was plenty of parking in the back. It's a beautiful building and there is a cool peacock that meanders about the property. Staff weren't overly friendly but also weren't rude or off-putting. Sadly when we went, only 3 flavors of regular custard were available so in order to fill a flight I added a non-dairy mango, which was surprisingly one of the better flavors. This is where reviewing begins to get convoluted and more difficult. The flavors in general were a little weak, and there was ice separation which hurt the consistency and took away from the creaminess; the whole premise of custard vs ice cream. I'm sure it is due to the custard being all natural but also leaves me torn. While I truly appreciate that they do not use gums and emulsifiers, it ultimately hurts the consistency and flavor. The scoop size is about the size of a golf ball which is good for waist conscientious folks but you can also walk away hungry after spending a good amount of money. Overall, it was a nice visit but I would like to see a few more available flavors, less ice separation (if it's possible without chemicals) and service with a smile.

We had to make our annual visit to Spotted Duck as I had been craving their flavors. We arrived and it was not too busy for a Saturday afternoon. We ordered two flights and were very happy with our flavor selections. The seasonal strawberry rhubarb was a favorite. They do have a lot of flavors available in pints which you can't get in scoops. This was a bit disappointing and we will need to remember to bring a cooler with us next time. As always the grounds were lovely and inviting. We sat close to the ducks which we enjoyed observing while we ate our ice cream. We were given two cups of duck feed with our order and the kids enjoyed interacting with the animals.

Truly incredible. Some of the best ice cream my taste buds have ever experienced. We ordered a flight and tried Fleur Bleu, Java Junction, Blueberry Streusel, and Fudgie Wudgie. Fleur Bleu was a standout - light, smooth, with just the right balance of blueberry and lavender. Fudgie Wudgie was also exceptional: rich, dense, and almost brownie-like in texture. Each scoop felt thoughtfully crafted and totally lived up to the hype. The setting made it even better with plenty of outdoor seating, friendly ducks roaming nearby, and even a peacock making an appearance. A delightful treat all around.

Stopped by and the Spotted Duck never fails! Another new favorite flavor on the books: Sweet Corn . It sounds intriguing so we went for it and were not disappointed, love this unique flavor!! The birds were so welcoming and friendly too!

Ice cream made with... duck eggs? Sometimes things sound too unique to not try and my oh my does this ice cream shop deserve to be on your radar! Spotted Duck has been throned the best spot in NY state and I have to agree with the masses. With their rotating menu of refreshing flavors, friendly staff, and beautiful outdoor seating area, there's no other place I'd recommend more than for a scoop! If you're having trouble deciding between their flavors, have no fear and order a flight! Take a seat with your 4 (or 8!) selected flavors right next to the ducks who make this possible and you might even be lucky enough to have the roaming peacock say hi!

Wow! Super fun find in the finger lakes We splurged and had a flight- a small scoop of 8 flavors! We couldn't choose our favourite they were all so good (note- the duck egg does leave a bit of a coating on the roof of your mouth) Bucolic setting - great place to visit with kids!

Absolutely adorable. And great ice cream from a hard working family. The cones are made fresh from a waffle pizzelle! There's a nice place to sit outside and watch the ducks and peacocks walk about. Great homemade hard ice cream. Such a special little gem. Stop and enjoy it! read more

So quaint! We were in the area visiting relatives when we also accidentally drove by this place earlier in the week when it was closed. We were drooling by the time Friday came to try it! Very delicious and reasonably priced. Lots of flavors to choose from to enjoy plain, or combination sundaes to jazz it up. They also have pints to go. Loved hanging out on their outdoor picnic tables, taking in the fresh air and beautiful view of the hillsides and farmland. We definitely visited the ducks (and few chickens), but the crown jewel was a tiny black kitten who stole my daughter's heart and made her completely forget about her dessert til it was almost melted. Will definitely be back when we are in town again, and our relatives are converts now too. read more

Spotted Duck is such a neat and unique ice cream pit-stop! If you enjoy petting zoos or being around animals in general, you will love this place. It backs up to a farm area filled with chickens, roosters and even a peacock. I would highly recommend taking your children/family on a nice day. The ice cream is creamy and tasty! I would recommend ordering a flight and trying as many flavors as you can. "The Hollywood" flight allows you to choose 4 scoops of different flavors for $6.50. My personal favorite was the Cookies n Cream, but they also have a delicious Coffee flavor as well. There is so much to choose from on their menu, you are guaranteed to find something to cure your sweet tooth! read more

Spotted Duck is SO cute! They make and sell frozen custard made with duck eggs from ducks right on the property! They have twelve different flavors at any given time, and rotate relatively often. They offer scoops/cones, sundaes, ice cream sandwiches, and ice cream flights. For flights you can choose either four flavors or all twelve. Their frozen custard is GREAT. The duck eggs make it super rich and creamy, and their flavor combinations are awesome. They have your standard vanilla, and twists on favorites (dark chocolate, spicy chocolate, strawberry rhubarb, emu tracks - caramel, chocolate, almonds - cookies and cream with chocolate chip cookies instead of Oreos) and some a little more adventurous like blueberry lavender. Bonus - they have a lovely outdoor seating area with tons of adirondack chairs that overlook the duck pen! They have ducks, chickens, turkeys, peacocks, and a rooster! There are even goslings and chicks. An adorable way to spend part of our afternoon. read more

What an awesome place to grab custard! Not your typical ice cream at all but delicious for sure and made with many organic ingredients and from the duck eggs on the farm! So cool. Also had amazing flights where you can get 4 mini scoops of different flavors to try which was great when we couldn't decide which one to try. All were delicious. They even had ice cream for our dog which he loved as well! Highly recommend this place- staff super nice too. And loved that they don't use any paper products or plastic spoons. Best ice cream frozen custard thing I've ever had. Please go here and get a flight of ice cream. Hot mud, Chai, and strawberry rhubarb are extraordinary. The custard is thick and has a good body but is still somehow quite light unlike regular plebian ice cream. I'm still in shock from how refreshing and pleasant consuming this thing was. It was definitely made with love. I am in love with this frozen custard. I would marry this frozen custard if I could. If this frozen custard was a woman, I'd take her out and treat her right every day. In fact, I'd treat her to some spotted duck creamery frozen custard. We'd sit amongst the ducks and romanticize farm life together. Then we'd quit our day jobs and move to rural country to start our own. read more

I went to the Spotted Duck with my enthusiastic companions who said they had the best ice cream in the area. We arrived about 10 minutes before closing and were greeted warmly by the owner who was happy to chat with us and give me samples of his unique flavors of frozen custard. They had some sundaes so Annie and I got Cookie Monster. I chose to have mine with a caramel almond custard. It had a chocolate wine sauce, whipped cream and a chocolate chip cookie-very tasty! Jean had chai tea custard in a home made cone and I plan to have that the next time I visit. The owner told us he spent time working on getting the spices right because he didn't want to use a mix. It paid off big time! So good! They use all natural, local organic ingredients and great care in making their frozen treats. You can even get a cup for your dog complete with an organic biscuit. I highly recommend this place! read more

The Spotted Duck is a unique creamery where the custard is made from Duck eggs. They have a beautifully made building with access to feeding the ducks when you are accompanied by your children. They also have peacocks. They generally have 8-10 flavors with some seasonal flavors that pop-up monthly. This place is a family favorite and first class. read more

We visited here for the first time tonight. I tried the 4 flight and wish I had been hungry enough for the 12! I choose the java junction, salted caramel, strawberry rhubarb, and dark chocolate. All were Amazing! My darling had emu tracks with a waffle cone. He let me try his and it was delicious. We visited the ducks and peacocks which was fun. I believe we talked to the owners and saw their kids. They were all lovely people. I'm disappointed that I don't live close enough to visit this place more often. read more

Listen guys, you can get a flight of ice cream. And if there's more people in your group, you can taste all of the flavors. The portion sizes were just right for getting a few creamy bites of each. I have to recommend the hot mud, though strawberry rhubarb and the cookie flavor were also up there. The setting is bucolic. If the weather is nice it's all outdoor seating...just go. read more

Wow! Hot mud ice cream blew my mind! It was rich, smooth, spicy, and perfect in the homemade waffle cone. Some say this is the best ice cream shop in upstate NY. With only one visit and one single-scoop flavor, I can't say. But I certainly don't dispute the claim. read more

There's a reason it's been voted the best! This is the best I've had. The different flavors are amazing and have sometimes changed, giving new variety's to try! The atmosphere is perfect and the ability to check out the ducks and even saw a peacock! A great option to try a flight of 4 perfectly portioned scoops is the way to go and sample some different ones. Certainly worth going to. Will be back and will continue to recommend. 5 stars for sure! read more

Even if you have already had dessert - stop at the Spotted Duck. The most amazing ice cream/custard ever. Our family of three shared an ice cream flight and enjoyed every unique and tasty flavor. Totally worth the stop and just an amazing place with a great story. Wonderful for young kids tired of a long car trip, with lots of space to roam and ducks and chickens to watch. read more

This was a place I had to visit after hearing the raves for the salted caramel. What a delight. The owners source everything locally and the flavors prove that the effort is so worth it. OMG - this is the best ice cream my family (adults and 2 kids) have ever tasted! LOVE various flavors - all interesting and delicious! Worth taking a detour to enjoy the wonderful ice cream! Fun for the kids to feed the ducks (whose eggs are used in the ice cream). Can't get enough of this - and the owners and staff are super nice!!! read more

Great ice cream spot! Such a cute place with friendly staff. All homemade ice cream. They have an area fenced off for their chickens, ducks, and peacocks. In which you can eat their ice cream and go see the cute animals. Very clean area even the picnic tables were nice. They serve your ice cream on a tray and cute little metal bowls. read more

The person Who took our order at the window was rude and was non-descriptive when we asked her about the details of the ice cream. We waited for over an hour for minor scoops of ice cream. Our frozen custard is made 100% from scratch, on site, with mostly local and organic ingredients, including duck eggs from our farm.

History

Established in 2016.

We started experimenting with frozen custard in 2010. After developing recipes, we opened at our current location in 2016.

Meet the Business Owner: Sam S.

What came first, the duck egg or... the pizza? We don't think Sam would have guessed that both were in his future when he graduated from Hobart College in 2017 with a degree in Sociology. But then he won the grand prize from a prestigious Hobart competition, and luckily for us, he changed course and launched his first business - Pizza Posto. Over the last years, he developed a close friendship with Daniel and Elizabeth Hoover, the founders of Spotted Duck, who shared his better food philosophy and a commitment to serve our community with healthier (and more delicious!) food choices. If you don't see him serving pizzas in the truck during your visit, he is probably out foraging for mushrooms, picking sweet basil from the garden, or whipping up a fresh batch of dough for your next pie!

Fourth, the cost of the kiddie ice cream dish ($3.25) was completely reasonable for a single scoop. Finally, be sure to bring cash with you (they do not accept credit cards). I would not hesitate to come back here. They have a beautiful view from the parking lot of farmland. What a perfect place. By the way if you have a chance try the llama licious ice cream. For icecream we tasted the purple cow, peach cobbler, cookies and cream, black cherry chocolate, and the coffee heath crunch. My favorite was the coffee flavor- unlike other coffee icecreams I've had, this coffee had a much more robust and richer flavor profile. I liked cookies and cram-- always a classic. The cherry flavor was a tad too artificial for my liking. Purple cow was fine- very similar to the Cornell Dairy flavor- both are good though! I liked the peach cobbler flavor though wish there were more of the mix-ins. For cheeses, we tasted the butter garlic cheddar curds, the signature Summit Cheddar, and the plain quark. The garlic cheddar curds were so good, I took a bag home with me! Summit cheddar had a nice nutty flavor, not too 'sharp' though. The quark was interesting... it had a rather mild flavor and interesting texture (similar to boursin). I didn't love it, but I didn't hate it. I also took home a bag of the tomato basil cheese curds which I didn't like as much as the garlic ones. The tomato ones had a very subtle flavor-- too subtle. There was a line when we got there though it moves relatively quickly and is definitely worth the wait! Overall, I had so much fun picking out so many icecreams and cheeses to taste as well as seeing the cows! I would highly recommend Shtayburne Farm!

Their flavor menu has been updated to indicate which flavors contain gluten and which ones don't. They also now have a protocol for those with strict gluten allergies. This time it was spring, so they didn't have my favorite Jalepeno Popper this time around. But they did have Lavender. For the second and third scoops we got Pistachio, followed by Butter Pecan. As a reminder, they use 14 percent buttermilk, and their ice cream emphasizes FLAVOR over sugar. Despite the high fat content, their ice cream doesn't feel heavy while you're eating it. Take that as a warning, since you might feel it after you consume too much. The Lavender was fantastically floral. The Pistachio was like eating Pistachios. Each flavor is exactly as described. Previously, I had also gotten my coworkers ice cream from here several years prior. Hand-packed into pints, you'll need a serious amount of self-control to avoid finishing them in a single sitting. They've also opened up a location in DeWitt Mall on the Seneca Street side of the commons.

It was our first stop and would have been my first visit, but a woman came running out to tell us we could not be there, they were completely booked (with 4 cars in the parking lot!) and we would have to leave. Our driver said she figured we were ok because we weren't in a limo or bus. Then she told her it was no problem, we would just go to Fox Run. Our driver was very apologetic and made sure to tell the company she works for to cross Red Tail Ridge off all itinerary lists. It was frustrating because it cut into our paid driver time. But the day was saved by great experiences at Fox Run, Zugibe and Three Brothers. My advice: save yourself the hassle and skip this winery. They need someone serious customer service training.

It was only a 10 minute drive across Bluff Point. If you're staying near or in Penn Yan, I would recommend a visit. Lots of pluses. First, this is a local, family-owned cidery that opened in October 2024. The Geertz brothers (Eric and Doug) are co-owners. I was served by Eric who is an American Airlines pilot (3-4 days per week) and grew up in Penn Yan, NY. His father and grandfather were also pilots, so you'll see aviation images in the tasting room. Second, the handcrafted ciders had a wide variety and mix of sweet and tart flavors. I personally liked the "Locals Only Catawba", but the Grape Escape is one of their bestsellers (especially in the fall). A sample flight of 5 different ciders is $15 and a pint is $7. Third, it has a friendly and down-to-earth vibe. I did not feel rushed on a Friday afternoon. Overall, it's worth a visit if you're staying near or in Penn Yan, NY (on Keuka Lake). If their cider cans are not available, you can order a $25 glass growler (which must be kept in a refrigerator and preferably consumed within 2-3 days after opening).
