My wife and I took a wonderful trip up to Watkins Glen two weeks ago and I got to experience such delicious food! Food: I actually ended up coming here twice with both times getting their exclusive flavor (of the week?) apple crumb which was a nearly perfect blend of apples, vanilla, and caramel. The ice cream was rich and the caramel/apples cut it with some sweetness. Service: unfortunately there was only one or two people working so it was a little slow, but this was in the later evening when it was closing. Hard working and polite! Possibly the best vanilla/chocolate twist soft serve I've ever had (tied with Holy Cow in Red Hook). The twist is super super creamy, almost like a custard consistency. Very rich chocolatey flavor. I did try the mango dole whip also and it was very good too, super refreshing after a summer hike. My partner tried one of the peanut butter hard ice cream flavors and it was also very good. Everyone knows that I like to write long detailed reviews. When it come to Glen Dairy Bar, there's just not that much to say. My wife and I stayed across the street a a little motel and when I saw an opportunity to get an Ice-Cream cone, I jumped at it. Walked across the street, and waited in a very orderly line of two. I am happy to say that everyone around was wearing a mask and was social distancing. My turn... I did not want a large, and wanted a little more than a small cone so I ordered a medium... (see picture.). WTF, a triple large cone by me at a carvel or Dairy Queen is 50% of what they gave me. This might have been the first time in my life that I was not able to finish Ice-Cream, cone... REALLY It was good, Chocolate and Vanilla ice cream was delicious and not runny soft. I can not recommend this place enough. They have a lot more than ice cream here and I'll try more on my next trip back. They also have a nice seating area if you just want to sit and relax for a few. I did think the brownies could be a bit more moist but it's a small trade off for the homemade icecream that isn't over sugared. There is musical ambiance outside and you should be prepared for a short 5-10 person line if it's raining (maybe more if it is not waiting). I am not a big ice cream fan, but this place was great! We had just hiked the trails at Watkins Glen State Park, and wanted to take the kids for a treat after. This is not far at all from the park, and there is a big ice cream cone out front. I was guessing this place gets busy, and the employee there confirmed that is the case. There is a good size selection on the menu, and the soft serve portions were larger than we were expecting. I usually am not into soft serve, but I sampled everyone's ice cream and it was amazing. So incredibly smooth and thick! I usually try my kids soft serve, and it is pretty common for it to be watery or grainy with bits of ice. The Glen Dairy Bar soft serve was perfection! Good ice cream stand with lots of variety in offerings! One complaint: the portions are too generous. Several customers in front of us warned about how large the "small" was ( 2 large hand scoops). Would recommend the kiddie size unless you are looking to make ice cream your meal. Prices are cheap, especially for the quality/portions. The young lady taking orders got a little sassy when we asked questions about the size of the scoops and if we can choose the three scoops of ice cream for the banana split. We wanted rocky road, chocolate peanut butter and cookies and cream. That didn't happen! We did get rocky road, vanilla and chocolate. The portions are big. The scoops are between the size of a baseball and softball. The cone with my snickers ice cream was nice. I'm unfamiliar with the Gifford's brand ice cream but it was good. Their menu is extensive. Any place with a menu that extensive isn't going to have fresh, natural food. I asked what they were known for. The kid says they were now serving black raspberry and dole flavours. And they have 4 homemade hard ice creams. OK! homemade is what I came upstate for. I asked for vanilla with hot fudge and it to be a kiddie size. I first asked how big the soft serve was for a kids' size and didn't want 4" of ice cream on a cone. So, bowl it was. When I got it, sure it was 1 scoop. But I didn't think the scoop was the size of my fist! I ate it in my car. Mind you, there is zero parking. It's narrow and people hanging around don't move. You can't park at the motel next door. The vanilla ice cream did not taste like vanilla. It tasted like milk and water frozen together. The hot fudge was just Hershey's hot sauce. I threw half of it out since it was so much. Really, the portion is a nice amount for $3 if you want a lot of bang for your buck. But there was no bang here. The stars are for the price. That's it. Too bad, since I came from 5 hours away and was excited to see all the dairy farms, thinking the ice creams would be awesome. read more
