I walked in here on a complete whim. It was getting late and I was in the area, looking for a bottle of wine or two to share with someone, and a quick search on Yelp told me that Spring Street Wine Shop was still open and only a short walk from the restaurant I had just come from. The staff asked if I needed help and pointed out where the different selections were. I didn't really know what I was looking for and was open to anything high quality and interesting. The bottles were priced at a bit of a mark up compared to other wine shops, but typical for the neighborhood, and not to the point of ridiculousness or anything. The shop was on the smaller side but had a pretty decent selection, from cheaper bottles to more high quality. Sadly the cheaper bottles weren't the best in that price range, but the mid to high priced selection was better. The half bottle selection was lacking, but there were plenty of full bottle options. Definitely stop by if you are in the neighborhood. You could find something great here. read more

Edit: after some consultation with fellow wine lovers, I suspect that the wine I bought was corked. It had a sour/vinegar yet grassy/moldy taste, which should not be the case especially for a "reserved" wine(they even specifically emphasized the "reserva" label when trying to promote it to me), and I did have unusual trouble with the cork when trying to first open the bottle(the cork sort of was going to crumble into pieces, and it did). Unhappy. After carefully describing my preferences, I still got a recommendation for(and bought) a spanish red wine that was one of the two worst wines I have ever tasted in my entire life. I should have trusted my own better judgment instead of believing in their "bestseller". Prices are on the higher end. Even though this is New York, you should still be able to get a good bottle of wine under $20, but most of their wines are priced around $40 or higher. You could kinda tell that their $20 or under wines are of lesser quality, unlike some good wine stores in New York that sell stellar wines in the tens and twenties. Bottom line: spanish red wine sucks; walk out of the store immediately if anyone tries to sell you a "best-seller", because everyone's taste is different and the idea of a bestseller is ridiculous! I was lurking at my brother's apartment, waiting to hand over the keys to his pad to some nice foreigners who were interested in celebrating the new year NYC-tourist style. I didn't want to lurk alone, so I invited a friend over and realized that there was nothing to drink except an unopened bottle of Bombay Sapphire* and filtered tap water. While straight gin may appeal to some, I didn't want to be smashed on a Monday evening with the rest of the week left to take care of my pickled brain. So enter Spring Street Wine shop. Just a hop skip and a credit card swipe and I had a lovely bottle of white Sancerre, handily chosen by the helpful staff. The selection, while not priced like Queens, was reasonably priced and varied - with a nice distinction between regions and types of wine. For a bottle on the go and to prevent drinking too much** on a Monday night. A-OK * I later found out that the bottle had been unopened for about 7 years. Ducked in here to see if they carried a brand of wine that we'd been hunting for and, lo and behold, they did carry it, but not the varietal we were searching for. Nevertheless wound up picking up two different bottles after chatting with the guy behind the counter (maybe the proprietor?) who was extremely charming and pleasant to speak with. Additionally, they seem to go to greater lengths to make sure you're happy than most places, which made us feel really great. I would have to say a definite negative is that they have REALLY maximized the space in here that they can use to store bottles with. The downside part of this would be that I was literally afraid of breaking something the entire time I was in the store. Every second of it. The fact that my sense of balance is about as strong as Ozzy Osbourne's after spinning him around 20 times may have something to do with it, but still. The prices were about in line with other places, though looking around at some of the liquors it looks like some of the harder to find items may have been carrying a bit of ZIP code induced markup, but what around this area doesn't suffer that in some fashion? We came in to find a brand, but left finding a wine shop that we can definitely pop into plenty of times in the future. read more

A good place to pick up a bottle of something if you happen to be in the area and need to run that particular errand. Nothing particular stellar or noteworthy about it. Slightly better wine selection than your typical liquor store, you generally can't go wrong if you're picking something up to bring to a dinner party. Prices are decent. I don't know that I would ever come here on purpose, but it's close to the subway and often on the way to a party, event, opening, etc. There must be a youth hostel nearby or something, because I have been accosted many a time just outside this store by 19-20 year old British, European, or Australian kids who kinda sorta forgot to look up what the American drinking age is. I try to pick them out something that won't have them puking inside of an hour. It's the least I can do. read more

Super super helpful staff -- The minute I walked in the door, I was asked, "What kind of wine are you looking for, madam?" An extensive but not unusual selection of Californian, French, and Italian wines, red and white. Lots of pinot grigios and sauv blancs in the fridge -- extra points for that. Average selection of standard Australian wines; NZ wines are also well-represented here. Not a great selection of Chileans, Argentinians, or South Africans (the latter was abominable, actually -- a true shame). Heaps of points for the helpful staff who showed me around the tiny shop, every nook and cranny, so I would feel comfortable browsing. Minus points for low South African selection and the $30 minimum for credit or debit. Boo. Generally, a good place to pick up your regular dinner bottles, but probably not a place you would stop for something special like a gift or a momentous occasion. Extra points because it's open on Sundays! All in all, I'm happy, and I'll be back! read more

A decent place to grab a bottle of wine in a pinch, but prices are very high. The selection is largely from Costco and prices are jacked up. Be prepared to be followed around the store by the four employees who essentially take up the whole small space. Selection is pretty good and there is a good variety of wine from many regions and varietals. Still better than buying a bottle at a restaurant. read more

I used to come here often when I was in the area but after my last experience I will never go back. I went on a Friday evening to pickup some wine and liquor for a BYOB dinner party; long story short the employee improperly packaged my bottles and when I walked down the block a bottle shattered spilling everywhere. If I had dropped the bottle I would had taken accountability; however, this was clearly a mistake on behalf of the store. I went back, less than 10 minutes, and the employee was so rude and refused to even let me back into the store to talk to the manager. He accused me of lying and said I clearly dropped the bag and wanted free booze. Are you joking?! I understand accidents happen and I would have been open to coming to an agreeable resolution but the way he handled things was awful. No thank you, not again. read more

I stumbled upon this place two weeks ago when I had a bad experience with Sleepys Mattress Store. When I arrived home, I opened my bottle of Louis Latour Chassagne Montrachet Rouge 2007 and everything became much better in life! Larchmont Cleaners... this place is the best. Seven and her family have always done the best work for me. Whether its my shoes that need mending, or a sweater that has some holes, and of course, Dry Cleaning at really good rates, this place is the best. I highly recommend them! read more

Wide selection of wine (ranging from super cheap to super swank). Despite the convenient location, this place does not uncharge too much -- I was able to pick up a bottle of my favorite cheap Pinot for around the same price as other places. The staff was also very friendly and willing to help you select a bottle within your price range! read more

I come here because it's really close to the spring street stop for the C/E and I can grab a bottle on the way to a dinner, party, friends, movie what ever. The staff are helpful but not very knowledge able with other wines. They know what they sell and they don't sell much. Lots of popular or typical varieties of wines so if you buy something here you like, most likely they will still have it next time, as they continue to buy the same stock. I try other stores to sample different wines and come here to pick up that Kendal Jackson or chilean Rioja I always buy. They are more expensive than say astor, but you're paying for convenience here. read more

Terrible. Tried to sell me a ruined bottle of 200 dollar champagne and actually was trying to hide the box as I was being asked to pay. Found another bottle and told me it was more expensive but I'm glad I did my research ahead of time because it was cheaper! I asked the salesman's opinion as to the most drinkable Pinot in a modest range. Always he pointed me to the more expensive wines, and seemed not to know the difference between one wine or another, or to care. The customer did not exist as a person. All that mattered was a quick sale. The wine that I was recommended turned out to be mediocre. I will not return. read more

I'm a little biased, because this wine shop is across the street from my apartment, but I wouldn't keep going back if they staff there wasn't so great! I'm somewhat of a regular (is that a bad thing?), and they always bring my usual order to the cash register for me. They also are extremely nice to my large dog who is like a bull in a china shop in their store! Prices here seem pretty standard for the area. Definitely not overpriced. If you hit this store at the right time on what I think are usually Fridays, they have vendors offering samples. read more

I wish I could give less than one star. I was staying at the Crosby Street Hotel which is about a five minute walk to this wine shop, so a friend and I decided to visit it to purchase a bottle of wine. From the moment my friend (a female) and I entered the store-we were being followed around the wine shop (which is a relatively small store). I told them that if I needed any assistance I would gladly ask them for help. The employee (a younger Asian male) continued to hover over me, a little too close for comfort. I selected a bottle of white wine and proceeded to checkout. The Cashier looked at my $20 bill and insinuated it was fake. He then called over the two other employees and refused my $20 bill that I had just taken out of a Chase ATM to make said purchase. I should mention that my friend and I are both African American. Horrible service, rude employees--I've never been treated so disgustingly at any other place of business. If this is how they treat people, they deserve to go out of business.
