Basically I came to Embassy Wines because it was the only wine shop in the area open at the time, and I was in the market for a bottle of wine. Yes, everything is incredibly marked up here. There is a decent enough selection, nothing fantastic but not awful either. The staff is very hands off and doesn't go out of their way to help. The prices are the worst part. I don't mind spending a lot on bottles, especially for good wine, but you'll see mediocre wines way marked up here. I'd still come again if it's late at night and I'm desperate though. I'll give it props for staying open late at least. Is it just me or are all of the wine shops with high mark ups open the latest? read more

Decent little shop. Not sure what all the commotion is about in the prior reviews. I asked for help the moment I stepped into the store and received it. I knew what I was looking for and how much it cost and it was only about $1 more than the store a few blocks away that I normally go to. I will say he did seem to randomly pull a number out of the air when I asked. But maybe he knew he couldn't scam me because I put a little french flavor when I asked about the wine and tried to make it sound like I knew what I was talking about. I can't imagine what this Andrew R's problem is, though certainly one has to be suspicious when someone's Yelp handle is "BEATEN AND ROBBED BY ORAL SURGEON." One day they had a tasting on a horrific cold day. I was on the UWS and for the first time understood why Upper East Siders refuse to move to the UWS under any circumstances. It's f***** freezing over there when the wind blows off the Hudson! I cabbed because the 72 never came by Stephen Wise Temple near my dance studio--and I saw a cab door nearly blown off--and arrived to my hood happy about a 10 degree bump. I buy Knob Creek here every 2 months when I'm in the city for my friend in whose apartment I live when it's available as my friend is a whiskey drinker and if not drinking Middleton or something obscenely pricey, Knob is the go-to daily whiskey. They have a bargain closet with wines under 15, which includes many under 10. You couldn't ask for more in a liquor store off a street with brownstones in the 8-9 million range, an area with restaurants and bars where you can't get a glass of wine not at happy hour for under 13-14. Embassy is great. I also love 67 Wine which is much bigger and a true wine lover's mecca. But of all the UES liquor stores, I go to this one the most. I had a really good experience at the place on Park around 55th this week. (I have to look up the name but they had a tasting on 10/16 from 2-4 as I was walking back from New York Health and Racquet, which I will Yelp about now, a great surprise as anything on Park or Mad is generally overpriced. They were doing a tasting of 3 Arboleda wines and I bought the Carmanere, a Chilean wine with a fascinating history and for once, I liked the 20 better than the 95.) I highly recommend this if you live in the 60s East. There's other stuff in the 80s I like too. My friend was here on 9/11 and everything was closed, so with a friend and neighbor walked up to 88th or so to get some wine at the only store open that horrific and life-transforming day. read more

Great local shop that carries a wide variety of wines, ciders and spirits. They support local wineries and even have a Sauvignon Blanc called "The Oyster" that funds the restoration of 100 oysters to NY Harbor. So cool! read more

Embassy is more expensive than the hand full of other liquor stores in the area, but it's open at least an hour later than the rest. It has an OK selection of wine and the standard liquors. It's great if I have to pick up something quick and last minute, but if you have the time (and it's before 9pm), it's worth your while to go up to Garnet Wines & Liquors. read more

Extremely rude and unprofessional behavior from Patrick the manager and Sam. I received a store credit and they refused to honor my store credit because it was too old although no expiration was stated on my paper. I went to the store twice and called once and was first misinformed by Sam to call the manager in 1 week then Patrick, the manager, was extremely argumentative. Finally got over to Embassy Wine and Spirits , an amazing shop, after a friend turned me on to this clear extra anejo QUI Tequila. I am blown away. Great selections of just about everything, very good prices, solid recommendations, high quality choices. Their French wine section is large and covers every region, with a wide assortment. One of my favorite whites, Pernand-Vergelesses Les Belles Filles by Domaine J.J. Girard is there. German wines, Australian, New Zealand, California, a VERY nice selection of great wines. The liquor section was a nice surprise. Outstanding assortment of quality labels, and a single-malt scotch section to die for. I found the staff very helpful and friendly and very knowledgeable. Be very careful of these guys. Not only are their prices kind of high; the prices sometimes scan significantly higher than what is marked. When confronted about this they say it doesn't matter how it's marked, only how it scans. I think this is actually consumer fraud and I have reported them to the city. read more
