My partner and I went to Sprout a couple years ago with a garden designer to buy some plants and vessels. The owner positively fawned over the designer. Eventually we decided to purchase several thousand dollars worth of products for a big project. A few days later I went in to get a couple more plants and . . . static . . . I'm not saying she didn't recognize me from like a week previous. I'm saying she didn't acknowledge that I was a customer presently in her store. WTF? I've been in there since then because I actually LIKE the store. It's pretty. The prices are higher than at Grand Street gardens, but they have more stuff for terrariums. So I would like to shop here, but darn if every time I go in I'm not blown away by what a jackhole the owner is. I don't feel that she is rude to me personally, but oblivious to customers as a matter of course. Maybe the story is a hobby for someone who doesn't need to build relationships with customers. Sprout is a boutique plant store. Their prices are comparable to some of the other popular spots in the city like Adams and Sons, Grand, or Gethsemene, though maybe slightly higher. The prices are somewhere between a greenhouse and those severely marked-up floral shops in the city. The storefront is fairly small, so they tend to carry smaller/younger varieties of plants (which is all I want to buy from a store like this anyway). Even though they have a small storefront they do a great job with purchasing. It's mostly modern, so there's a lot of container, terrarium, or tillandsia plants... If that's what you're into. They also carry a decent selection of unique tropicals and cactii as well as a few of the usual staples (e.g., sensevaria, pothos, ficus, etc). The staff are mostly very knowledgable, friendly, helpful, and educated on the varieties and their care, this fact alone sets them apart and probably keeps a lot of people coming back. My only complaint is that there isn't a good selection of containers or gardening supplies. read more

Most adorable florist/plant store I have ever been to! Was recently here to replace some of my deceased succulents (yes, I have a hard time keeping plants alive, even succulents) and to get some fresh garland for our mantle for the holidays. The staff was really helpful and friendly at helping me find and pick out appropriate garland I was looking for, even giving me some tips on how to keep it from drying out prematurely. Inside the store, it's a steamy tropical environment (beware of fogged up eye glasses) with a ton of unique plants ranging from teeny tiny air plants, to succulents, cacti, all the way to large rubber tree plants and a large cooler of neat flowers. They have a large selection of adorable pots and terrariums as well to make your Pinterest inspirations come to life. As an added bonus for a small fee, they will pot any of your plants you purchase there in their vessels. In addition to the plants/flowers/pots, they also have a small array of great gift ideas. They also frequently host terrarium workshops which look really fun. Just wish they were a little closer to my neighborhood, but the trek there is worth it! read more

I love sprout home! Although it's not the most conveniently located plant store to me (actually none of them are) the journey is always worth it. Compared to Gethsemane, the stock is on the smaller side, but Sprout always has their idiosyncratic plants that always brings me back. The staff were very attentive and on point, never once did I actually need to look for help, because they were all already on it. The only thing that I have against this place is that they put their beautiful plants in equally beautiful pots that increases the price three fold, which makes me want to buy a beautiful pot to put my beautiful plant in, thus saying goodbye to my beautiful money. This place is awesome and they know it, and they're giddy with power. The prices are positively haughty. I usually go to Gesthemane garden center in Andersonville, but they have their limits. I was intrigued by the artsy / chic feel of Sprout and came across the city for terrarium supplies. Man oh man. Sprout's accessories are creative and hard to find, (their sister store is in New York, if that gives you an idea.) but the prices are inflated to the point that my son and I played "Guess that price" and guessing high, we always under-estimated by $10. I suppose only investment bankers who wish they were artists shop here, because a normal person would have to hock a kidney. But where else will you find weathered stone baby doll heads? You don't need to spend $100 here to build a terrarium. There's no need to purchase driftwood, beach glass, and rocks. Don't be a lazy bum. Go take a walk and get some. Terrariums are supposed to be salvaged objects, aren't they? Speaking of that -- no need to buy a container here for $50, unless you need on that's super chic, which they do have. The Salvation Army has lots of interesting glass containers and tea cups you can use. I even found a terrarium bowl for $1.99. Oh yes...But investment bankers don't have time for that. You have to ask for help, as the sales staff are so cool that they ignore you, because they want to be from New York. Once you dare though, you will actually get excellent help. We wound up carefully sorting through the merchandise, and leaving with a nice assortment of plants and some terrarium charcoal supplies,(no driftwood,) and instructions, which I did appreciate. And the actual plants are not over-priced much, they seem to be the going rate. read more

If you want to get something that is different the the usual stuff you find at garden centers, in this area, then this is your spot. I am a ruthless murderer of plants. It took me some time to acknowledge this, but I had finally run out of excuses. I couldn't blame it on the city tap water when so many people can clearly sustain green life. But the killing of every plant that entered my abode was becoming costly, and it was time to admit it: I needed help. I walked into Sprout and perused the potential victims- the guy working caught sight of me and strode right over. I confessed that my thumb was black, and he asked about the conditions of my apartment, everything from light to humidity to... well that's it, really. I answered honestly and he suggested two plants, one for my bathroom and one for my bedroom, which is never really light and never really dark. He and a co-worker spent 15 minutes telling me EXACTLY how to care for the plants. I followed their instructions. The plants are alive. 4 weeks later. I am absolved. A great place to browse and look for gifts. One of the few places in the city I've seen that has paper white bulbs. And it has probably more "Home" than "Sprout". Sprout Home, and our designer Ellen, were great in every way. We used them for just personal flowers, no decor, for a small wedding. We called a number of florists, and Sprout Home gave us the best price and the most helpful storyboard previews of what the flowers would look like, which was very helpful since I was planning from another city (and in fact never met Ellen in person, although we spoke on the phone and she is super nice). They never made us feel like small fry even though our order was just for a few bouquets, boutonnieres, and corsages. They were also very flexible when our numbers and needs changed. Most of all, the flowers looked incredible. They held up well too, including a cluster of flowers made for my hair. We did stop by the shop briefly once, and it is charming. read more

I love Sprout Home, I am in there several times a month. They have a great selection of unique plants and all the supplies one would need to build a really cool terrarium. I even attended the terrarium class they host and it was great. The instructor, Jessica, is extremely knowledgeable and fun. In the summertime they have outdoor plants on the patio and even more up on the roof deck of their building. They also have a good selection of planters for inside & outside. I purchased the Sprout Home book and it is not only a beautiful inspiration to the amateur home gardener, but it also did give some great tips for plant care and troubleshooting. This is a cute shop, especially when the outside space is open. They have mostly potted plants and many indoor plants and terrariums. The staff is super friendly and helpful. I've come here before looking for larger flats of flowers for outside planting - they did not have much and what they did didn't look very pretty. When I'm doing more outdoors planting in the ground or in the garden, I now stick to Home Depot or other bigger stores. This is great for what it is, though, and perfect for winter/indoor plantings. read more

I am an absolute novice with plants, but want to add some greenery to my apartment. I have no idea what I'm doing, so obviously I need help. I have walked into this store twice, with intentions of making a purchase both times. Neither of those times have I been acknowledged by a member of the staff. Employees are nowhere to be found and whoever the guy was behind the counter looked bored and inconvenienced to be there. It was very overwhelming and intimidating roaming around the store with no idea of what I should get or where to start. While I agree they do have a nice selection of nice large trees, customer service was off. We were gonna get a few large trees for our business space, and asked for recommendations. Based on their website they offer free consultation on commercial space, they handed me a business card and told me to call the person in charge. While their plants are slightly overpriced and we were gonna invest, I thought they would offer better customer service. After a few questions, the employee seemed s bit annoyed and responded with "what's up" when we said "excuse me can we please..." We still ended up getting a tree but didn't bother to ask for delivery service or further recommendations. read more

I was looking to see where I could get some succulents and air plants and all signs pointed to Sprout Home. I was concerned going in because of all of the reviews that say this place is really overpriced. Now I realize those are just people who don't often go to nurseries or plant shops. The prices are definitely on par here. Some things were slightly overpriced but I found many things to be exceptionally reasonable. The employees were not very outgoing or helpful at first which made it a little awkward. They just kind of stared at us as we contemplated what we needed knowing nothing beyond the few memories I've held on to from my high school horticulture class. Eventually we asked for their advice and one of the women (I forgot her name) ended up being very knowledgeable and quite helpful. It got a bit uncomfortable, I became concerned thinking she thought I was looking to adopt a child or puppy from her because she gave me a thorough interview before 'allowing' me to buy some succulents and cacti. Just came home with some lovely flowers for the balcony and a free tomato plant to boot! -don't remember his name- was super helpful, and he showed me what would still make sense to buy and plant so late in the season (no cash flow has equaled naked space thus far). We hired Sprout for all of the floral for our Nov. 2016 wedding at the Art Institute. It was so much fun meeting with Sarah and Kayla and going over exactly how my fiancé and I envisioned everything. They really took the time to listen and ask questions and give suggestions. They were super easy to work with long-distance, too. We couldn't be happier with how everything turned out! Still 5 stars. :-) Since my first review, I've bought 3 more plants from there and some cute lil' airplants. One of my earlier plants didn't make it, so I had to re-up. Sprout was very nice about helping me save my plants that were sickly. They charge a very small repotting fee of $5. I swear, every time I go in there, I stay for over an hour, browsing...and bopping my head to the music that's playing. (Whoever selects the background music there...wins.) I have so many gifts in mind that I'd like to get for people from there (when the occasion comes.) I have to stop dropping by there, though...lest my place turns into a jungle. :-S read more

My mother has an advanced degree in horticulture, and landscape design. This should mean she imparted massive amounts of wisdom to me on how not to kill green things, right? Notsomuch. If there were a plant killers anonymous, I'd have to be the founding member. This wouldn't be such a problem, except I love plants! I like gardening, and fresh tomatoes, and the way houseplants make your apartment feel homey - This is where Sprout comes in to save the day. They helped me pick out seeds that I couldn't kill in a matter of hours (beans!! oh I love green beans) They also had some seriously crave worthy home stuff, like mugs, plants in a can and pots. The staff here also helped me pick out a kick-ass plant for my mom for her birthday. The vanilla orchid is still thriving in her hands, in fact she has repotted it a few times. Sprout is as good as it gets. I recently needed two standout floral arrangements for a wedding-themed photo shoot, so I sent Carly a few photos from Pinterest for inspiration. I left the rest to the Sprout team and they truly knocked it out of the park, choosing on-trend colors and florals that made the arrangements the star of the shoot (seriously, everyone on set kept commenting on how beautiful they were). I have been going to Sprout Home for over 5 years and they have always helped me with my indoor and outdoor plants. They listen to your specific concerns and have good recommendations. They have never let me down. I really like their staff and believe they generally care for their customers. With their help they have turned me into an amateur gardener to a decent intermediate gardener. I cannot say enough about their customer service. Recently, they helped me with my patio that was falling apart. They gave me a quote, came and did the work and came in well under budget. I obviously cannot say that will happen with you, but I appreciate their honesty and the quality work they did. I have gone there at least 50 times in the past 5 years. I dig their style. I have heard people say they are expensive but they provide excellent customer service so I feel it is well worth it. They're not super expensive, just more than HD or some such other big box crap store. But when it comes with help about how to maintain and care for your plants, it's totally worth it. My home looks amazing. Like I said earlier, I am now a fairly knowledgeable gardening enthusiast. read more

I wish the inside of my apartment looked like this place. I've been here several times and never leave empty handed. My latest project was to create beautiful planters to hang off my balcony railings. Mathis (I hope I'm spelling that correctly) spent as much time as it took to plan out, arrange, and tell me care instructions for my new plant buddies. All I told him was my budget and that I didn't want my plants to look like I bought them from Home Depot. I also told him as much as I love plants, I most likely kill them on accident. He was such a great help. It's been about 2 months and everything is STILL ALIVE and looks healthy and beautiful. Besides that fun project, I've also had help from Sprout Home making terrariums, bought house plants and succulents, and well as gifts for friends and family. The ultimate great go-to place for last minute gifts! This is the type of place where I know going in that I will buy a plant or something cool for someone, and have to also get something for myself. While checking out, my friend was saying how she has killed every plant she has ever bought, and the friendly girl checking us out said, "That's all you need to say - tell us that your plant challenged and we can find you a plant that can use neglecting!" We love Sprout, and we really love Steven. He is ridiculously knowledgeable about plants and all things green. I haven't asked him a question yet that he hasn't had an answer to. Plus, he did a complimentary home visit during which he took pictures and did a thorough consultation with us to discover our wants and needs, then gave us a plan and estimate for greening up our condo. He really understands our decorating style and recommended plants and planters that fit in with our decor and our lifestyle. Yes, it's expensive, and we can't get the whole thing done in one fell swoop. However, had we try to come up with the plan ourselves, or gone to a less expensive place like the grocery store or farmer's market, we never would have ended up with the right products. No one could have answered our questions or met our needs nearly as well, and for that alone, we will pay the premium. read more

I love this Sprout location. Definitely my happy spot. The staff are very knowledgable and are more than happy to help and teach. The terrariums are beautifully crafted and displayed throughout the store. The store never smells moldy, like some places, but fresh. There is ample street parking during the week - a little bit more tricky during the weekends. One of the floral staff (gentleman with glasses) was so sweet and patient with me. He made several gorgeous arrangements, for a great price, for my grandmother's funeral. Sprout Home was one of her favorite spots in the city. Everyone in the family loved his work. I LOVE this place!! I am definitely not a person known to keep plants alive for very long. Yet, I never give up and I always go back to Sprout for another attempt! They have a great selection of plants. There's so many unique and fun looking plants at Sprout. This is no IKEA. What's even better is the staff ! It seems they know each plants genus and species name. They are very knowledgeable about plant care and plant factoids. Each time I purchase a plant, they inform me of the proper care and upkeep for keeping it alive. For someone with a long history of murdering plants, detailed instruction is definitely needed and appreciated! Trust me, I ask tons of questions and they know their stuff! Sprout Home provided the bouquets and boutonnières for our winter wedding. It was honestly the most painless process of all the many, many little details of our big day. My mother and I walked in one evening without an appointment, sat down with Carly and talked about what we wanted, showed her a picture of my dress and a couple of pictures of what I was thinking. We got an email a few days later with a contract complete with photos of what they had come up with and that was that. Our wedding was Friday, February 13th, aka the day before Valentine's Day so we decided to pick up the flowers ourselves the morning to not have to deal with delivery on the busiest day of the year for flower shops. Even though they had many other flowers to attend to, our bouquets and boutonnières were exactly what I had hoped for. In a testament to how well the bouquets were prepared, my grandmother was brought one the day after the wedding in celebration of her 90th birthday and 8 months later it is in almost the same condition, just dried, brightening the windowsill of her nursing home room. read more

I wrote an initial review with some concerns about how long it took us to get our deck layout put together, but after a truly bad experience with another company this summer came back to update and reconsider. I would take some slight delays for a better overall experience and ultimately we got what we wanted which was important. The positives: The staff was friendly in our home. They were also extremely knowledgable in helping us choose plants when in their store. The flowers were beautiful and I liked the ideas they implemented. I was not disappointed in our overall costs so I feel like the work they did was fair and they did not try to take advantage of us even when we gave flexibility to the budget. I will go back, definitely. Having plants that are safe for my kids and animals is a key priority and ultimately they did that job beautifully. read more
