Great neighborhood Pub (Irish style) with cold beer great food and friendly service. I've had the chopped steak and cheese steak and fish and chips and reuben and all were great! Prices are great! Much better than the chain places around here. I'll be back soon - this is one of my favorite places for lunch and a cold one in New Bern. I've posted photos. read more

I liked the name, noticed it had good reviews and my hubby and I popped in for lunch. Way better than I even expected. Not only was the food delicious, but cooked just right and piping hot. It was busy, but our server was almost telepathic I knowing what we needed and when. Draft beer comes in an ice cold glass and only $2.50. After we left, we ran errands and popped back in for one more beer. Atmosphere is like a pub, where everyone's friendly, and there's the character (or two) telling stories and jokes. Great pub food joint. Not fine dining but it is spunky. We come here a good bit and has never disappointed. I stick to my norm of a French dip with fries while my partner in crime changes it up. However, as I say that, she gets her norm buffalo shrimp wrap with macaroni salad . The food is always well prepared with great service. If your looking for nice local spot in New Bern, try as I recommend. Not 4 stars for food or service individually but the two together makes this place an enjoyable visit. read more

My family just arrived from far away so we had lots of appetite preferences to satisfy. McDoogle's offered a diverse menu and were open Sunday evening for dinner. Been coming here for years and always had good food and good service, but I will never come back after meeting the owner in the parking lot today. We were parking in a spot that apparently only some days is considered no parking. The apparent owner was honking his horn at me rather than coming to talk to me. He pulled up next to me and I asked him if he had a problem. He had to use foul language rather than have a civilized conversation to make his point that we could not park there. After realizing that he was the owner we decided to leave and had a great lunch downtown at Beer Army gastropub where the owner does not have anger issues. read more

The food is great, the service is great. The place is gross, bathrooms discusting, filthy walls near rest rooms. My friends who frequent the place have the same complaint. Pros: friendly bartender, prices, homemade salad dressing, great salad, loaded baked potato and Perfect cook on steak. Cons: seasoning on steak This was obviously a local bar. It was funny sitting in the bar and listening to the old guys talk about each other basically. Also some party that somebody pays them to drive down to the keys to. My favorite part of the meal was the salad. Without the horseradish dressing the steak would have been bland. They do have specials every day. Worth checking out. read more

This place well deserves a first-visit review which only happens when we are VERY impressed - would give 4 1/2 stars if I could. We very much enjoyed the 5 piece Reuben Fritters - very unique! Then we got the Chopped Steak - requested it be medium-rare and it was PERFECTLY so (which doesn't always happen) and delicious. We also got the Smothered Chicken (which was much like a dish I would dream up myself) very tasty and took half of it home along with the delectably seasoned Snap Peas. This is one of my wife and I's favorite places in New Bern. Their food is decent bar-type food with good drinks. Service has always been good as well. The quesadilla with steak is made with steak from a philly steak and cheese. So it is an interesting and cheaper alternative to actual grilled steak. Today we had the quesadilla with steak and fried mushrooms, both were good but not extraordinary. We paid a fair price and we will be back to this warm establishment! read more

Stopped in on my way through New Bern. The restaurant gives off a diner/dive kinda feel but it was exceptionally clean, waiters were very nice and it was a good environment overall. I had the steak and lobster bisque and it was cooked to perfection. The bisque had lots of lobster and was quite creamy. Price was very reasonable and they had a good selection on tap. Mozz sticks were insanely fresh and well seasoned. If your in the area I'd definitely recommend! read more

Was hoping since the reviews were good it would be a good place but I was wrong. Sadly the food was very dry and bland. I think honestly the people writing the reviews go to get drunk or something. So if that is what you are looking for then this is the place! There were four of us so we tried a variety. We got the cheese steak and patty melt and those had no flavor. Even the onions had no flavor and that is a very hard thing to do. The chicken tenders tasted like they came out of a microwave and the nachos were bland. The mozzarella stick were dry but were bearable to eat. I wish I could rate this local business more stars but it was just that bad. Hate to rate small business bad but this was upsetting. read more

Had an interesting experience today Sept. 20, 2020 dining at Spunky McDoogles. For entrees the menu lists a bunch of meals that come with one side. I ordered fish and chips. It came with my choice of a side but no chips. I asked why and was told the chips were the side. I told the waitress and the (surly) manager the menu says a side is included with the entree. I considered the fish and chips an entree and asked why the chips weren't included. Because they're your side I was told again and again. If I wanted chips (fries) it would be $3.50 more. Upshot was I didn't get my chips to eat with my small portion of fish--two skinny deep fried pieces of cod, I'm guessing. The bill with a Bud lite draft came to $14.45. To add insult, one of the customers that heard my conversation, said to me on the way out, "you know you can tell a lot about a person how he treats the wait staff." That made my day. read more

I have never had a bad experience with the food, everything there is grand! Prices are good too! The atomsphere is that of an Irish Sports Pub with splashes of items from the local Fire Departments. Yeah. This is totally where the locals hang for a drink and some grub. Since I'm recovering from leg surgery whilst in New Bern, I cannot attest to the libations, but they did have some mad decent bar food for a casual lunch outing. I'd say it's a St. Patrick's Day-themed pub. It doesn't seem right calling it an Irish pub based on it's decor and the fact it lives in a strip mall. I also call it this because they advertise that every month on the 17th they serve the traditional Irish corned beef and soda bread meal (and on the back wall there's a huge digital days-until-countdown clock for March 17, 2016!) Okay, enough of the ambience. I ordered the prime rib sandwich and was able to add a soup or side salad for $2.50. I got the lobster bisque. I am very finicky about seafood being too "fishy" tasting. It was just a tad bit too stinky for me, but my mom liked it! I think I just need to stick to ordering lobster bisque when I'm in Maine. The prime rib sandwich arrived, as did my mom's fried fish sammy. We both got to pick a side--she got cole slaw and I choose fries. Both sandwiches came with LTO and pickle. My prime rib was about a 1/3 inch slab right from the roast served on a kaiser with au ju and horseradish sauce for dipping. It was a really good meal. Our waitress was really sweet. At the end of the meal she offered us to-go cups of soda. I've noticed this offer before when I've dined in NC. Must be a local thing! read more

Food is always good, Service is normally above average. Friendly people and a broad menu of comfort foods. Full bar, tvs, but also booths and corners away from the crowds. My favorite is the wings. You can get them fries and then grilled if you ask, which I always do. I have also enjoyed several sandwiches and desserts. But it is hard for me to not get the wings. The food here is fantastic, the service isn't the best but also isn't horrible by any means. Weirdly my only complaint with this place is that the alcoholic beverages taste like straight alcohol. There is so much in there that you cannot taste anything else. For some this may not be an issue, but it was very hard to choke down. read more

Oh my Goodness! Now my husband and I are traveling and we decided to do unique places to eat! This definitely qualifies! I would have given 5 stars. Let me explain, they used to have the best burgers in town, but over a year now I have noticed the meat quality is just not good. I'm giving it four stars only because of the mac-n-cheese. It looks beautiful but every time we get it, it lacks flavor. It's awful. I always hope it was a miss batch but it's always the same Noland flavor. The pros, their Ruben and fish and chips!! We always get the same thing every time! Never a disappointment. Another con, is they are almost of the Ruben bites!!! Every damn time they're "out". Why not make more!?! read more
