This is a great little small town diner, the mixed reviews made me skeptical of giving it a try, but the parking lot was packed. My husband and father in law did the seafood buffet and enjoyed it. I had the grilled flounder that was a bit dry and needed some sauce, fried okra was really good, and the home made cucumber pickles were really good! My mother in law got the country fried hamburger steak and really enjoyed it, I only took away a star because of a few minor inconveniences. Very slow service. It took over an hour to receive our very simple breakfasts. The problem must have been in the kitchen because the wait staff was attentive. But after 4 mugs of coffee,we wanted our food! One member of our group got the buffet. He enjoyed his two plates of sausage gravy and bacon before we got anything. Once our food arrived it was good and actually cooked to order, including the very soft scrambled eggs my brother in law always orders. For once,a restaurant finally did it! I have eaten motel complimentary breakfasts that are exemplary by comparison in ambiance, quality, selection and preparation. We stopped in here for the first time. My wife's daughter recommended this place to us so we wanted to give it a try. Kathey chose the fried shrimp with some fried okra and the Lima beans. My pick was the seafood combo of grilled shrimp and scallops with potato salad and some corn. Hush puppies were served with each dinner. The food was really good and very hot! Great place for food! Has a breakfast buffet on Saturday. For $8.75 all you can eat. Its small but still cool and clean. Clean bathrooms and service is wonderful. Everyone is friendly. Food is super fast too and when we went it was pretty busy in the morning. I would stop by this place again for a quick bite to eat. I would recommend getting the home fries instead of the hashbrowns. The Hashbrowns are like ones from McDonald's or the frozen ones from walmart. They also sell homemade pies for $12.00. read more

I hate to be the guy but I just was not impressed with our meal at this place. We got the buffet and the place was packed. Did not seem like many other places were open since it was probably off season. It was fried seafood and the fried shrimp just were not good. I am pretty sure they were frozen like most places but they were rubbery as well. The oysters had too much batter. The people were friendly and we liked our server but the food was only ok. The crab cakes were too bready. I enjoyed the fried catfish and tartar sauce. The slaw was pretty good so there was some stuff that was ok but wish I had save about $10 and just gotten fried catfish. We have eaten there many times and have never been disappointed! Always clean, wonderful service, excellent food at reasonable prices and large portions. Yesterday I had the 3 seafood platter and can honestly say, it was the best seafood that I have ever had!! Shrimp, Flounder and Oysters, Slaw, hush puppies and potato wedges. If that was not enough, we took home a piece of pie for each of us! John had chocolate and I had coconut which was home made and again delicious!! Country cooking and seafood. Just what a family restaurant in Oriental should serve. The food is excellent, prices are reasonable, the restaurant is clean, the servers are really wonderful and Brantley is a great guy. Portions are large, so order with that in mind. The fried chicken is as good as any in the South, so I guess anywhere, right? They are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner every day except Sunday. Some say that is inconvenient, but no it is a good man not working on Sunday. I could say more about the food, but better you try it. Please don't go expecting fancy or fine dining. Hollandaised and confused. If you don't like it, make your own breakfast. Pretty simple. There is nothing at all flashy about this place. If you go for breakfast, which seems like what many people go for, it is because you didn't feel like cooking your own bacon and eggs, but didn't want cold cereal either. The prices are fine, the food is fine. If you took one look at this place and expected your eggs benedict to taste like they were airlifted in from the Waldorf Astoria, then you made an error in judgement. I'm in Oriental 3 or 4 times a year. Not a local, but not a random out of townie either. I can say without bias, that the food here is average, the service is friendly but can vary in timeliness, and that the prices are average. I have not had a pie, but it sounds like I need to try a slice next time. For my part, things I would improve... The sweet tea is bad. I'm not sure if it is even actually brewed sweet tea, as it tastes like the pre-made stuff. Switching to a brewed tea would probably be both cheaper and better tasting. The biscuits are not very good. Not moist or buttery. I'd recommend ordering toast instead. Scrambled eggs should be more fluffy. read more

Wow. These former reviewers hold little weight with their reasons and the last one is pretty offensive with natives "to the trough" comment. To be honest, a restaurant like this is not one that gets reviews from the true patrons. They are not necessarily internet savvy and definitely not rude and narrow minded like the above patron or the other that does not understand the stress on a waitress. Oriental has a steady flow of tourists and boaters that often think they are the sole livelihood of the village. In this case, they help, but they are not the lifeblood. Those that have lived in the village (often for generations) are the frequent visitors to the establishment. The food is very good and continues to improve with new bar type additions to the menu like my personal favorite, the chicken quesadilla. The pies are exceptional cooked from scratch and the seafood buffet is a favorite. The only pig to the trough is the yelper that is calling native North Carolinians nothing short of redneck. Sir, no one is begging for your patronage. The food, reasonable prices, kind wait staff, and friendly conversation keep people coming back. Did I mention the best hush puppies I've ever had? Unfortunately our first experience and our worst experience for breakfast. Eggs Benedict $8.50 would compare to a McDonalds Egg McMuffin at a tenth of the price. There was nothing homemade about the home fries as they came directly out of a bag. Waitress brought coffee and no cream and took quite sometime for her to come back around and correct it. Then while eating doesn't ask, reaches across to refill coffee and spills it all over table not once but twice when filling cups then walks away only to come back later with check never asking how the meal was or did we need anything else. Truly unfortunate that there are not many choices in Oriental you would think the manager would go for quality. I cannot speak for lunch or dinner but revisiting breakfast there would be a never for me. read more

We have had the regular breakfast and the breakfast buffet here more than once. Always a good value for what you get. The staff are friendly and service is mostly quick and good. I absolutely love this place! Some people might think I am crazy for giving this restaurant five stars, but I have never had a bad meal here. Maybe it is not a fancy place, but the food speaks for itself. They have specials during the week too, like all you can eat fried chicken, or ribs. They even have buffets on certain nights. The fried shrimp is not the biggest size shrimp, but very very good, no heavy breading here. The fried oysters are also good, and I am a fan of them. You always run into someone you know, since Oriental is a small town, and it has that home town feel. Even the waitress remembers you, and that is great too! Good down home buffet for breakfast. Weekend dinner buffet was not to my liking, a little to much fried food for me. What I had was tasteful just not what I was hoping for. Reading the earlier comment, the last I checked an egg mac muffin was much more than 85 cents (ten cents on the dollar comment). I have had a number of breakfasts cooked to order here. Was in the area when sailing south and stayed at a marina nearby. Brantley was great. Large restaurant and many diners but didn't feel crowded. Had the $9 breakfast buffet. Eggs, bacon, sausage, grits, biscuits, potatoes, muffins, pancakes, French toast and cooked apples and fresh strawberries. Was particularly impressed by how good the French toast and pancakes were given it was a buffet. I HIGHLY recommend Brantley and will be back if in the area. That's the Thursday buffet, which the owner told us is different every day, with a "super" buffet on Saturday. Friday is popcorn shrimp and BBQ. We came here because it the most kid friendly of the choices in the town. They did have choices for the kids, which is good. Ours got macaroni and cheese. I tried to order the fried chicken. Our waitress told us it would be 20 minutes because they cook their chicken from scratch. Being hungry, I decided to order the fried shrimp. It took longer than 20 minutes for our food to get to the table, though. Our waitress apologized to us, letting us know that the table wasn't one of hers, but it belonged to another waitress. Unfortunately, both waitresses must have forgotten that there was a party of five in the restaurant. Drinks went unfilled for a long time. We were done with lunch for quite a while before we got our check. The food was definitely nothing special; much of it was bland. My absolute favorite restaurant! Brantley Jr. has very large shoes to fill since his beloved father passed, but he's doing it admirably.
