Been going here for almost two months, taking the Muay Thai basic courses. So far, I love it. The staff and other students are friendly and encouraging. They have classes for both beginners and advanced. I myself started out as a complete newbie but never felt out of place. As another reviewer said, its more a family than just a gym. Classes are fun but can be hard work and fast paced, especially for me since I don't have the best stamina and endurance so it's sometimes hard to keep up. However, I can definitely feel myself improving at a nice pace. Shout out to Robert and Edward, my two favorite instructors. Pricing is pretty normal for the area, however what I like the best about this place is that you can come in any day you like, multiple times a week. read more

Kru Rob and everyone at square circle embody everything there is to love about Muay Thai! The gym has a great family vibe where you're welcomed in with open arms. Whether it's fighting in the ring, to learn self defense, or just to lose a couple of pounds I would definitely recommend giving this gym a try! I've been coming to Square Circle NY on and off for the past 3 years even though it's located down in the Financial District and I live and work more uptown. I've made the effort to travel to this gym because I really like the friendly owners, Kru Rob and Kru Bea, and I enjoy the Muay Thai classes (even though I'm normally pretty picky about my workouts). The All-Levels Muay Thai class starts off with 3-4 minutes of jump roping, and then a series of ten short workout sets. The main bulk of the class consists of pad holding and heavy bag work, and then ends with the same ten workout sets and stretching. If you put in the effort by focusing on your speed and power, it's a great cardio and strength workout. The Advanced Class is more geared towards focusing on technique. It is better for people who are interested in training to fight or for those interested in learning clinch-work (which is excellent for self-defense). There are also sparring classes for those who want to practice their techniques on fellow classmates. The best thing about the gym is that it's constantly improving since they moved to the larger location. They added a fully equipped weight room, extra heavy kicking bags, and more space for classes. They also include yoga classes and allow you to attend BJJ classes occasionally if you're interested. There are even some open mat times if you want to come workout without taking the class. When I first started, I joined at the basic level (two classes a week) and then quickly upgraded to the "Director's Club" (which allowed three classes a week). Since we have moved to the new gym, they have changed their attendance policy and allow me to attend any class I want, which makes it much better! All-in-all, it's been a great experience working out at Square Circle. read more

I was really excited to give this place a try, and really turned off by their misleading marketing and pushy sales attempt. I've been working on my strength for awhile and was interested in trying out Muay Thai to learn some fighting skills. I saw the ad for a 30 day trial on their website and thought it was a great opportunity to find out if it was something I would enjoy. Later that week I went in for the 1hr one on one session. The session was fun, but immediately after we finished the trainer started pushing me to sign up for a 6 month contract. I was in no way interested in that kind of commitment since I felt the 1:1 intro section did not give me a good idea of whether I would be hooked enough to keep it up. She kept telling me that she was trying to help me out, because they'd waive the registration fee and I'd get some other freebies. I'm like, "What about the 30 day trial? I want to find out if I like it!" and she informs me that the trial is only for people who have committed to the 6 month contract. Wow. That is not a free trial, that is buy 6 months get 1 free. In other words, a bait and switch. At this point I immediately lose all interest of doing business with this gym. A 30 day trial is extremely generous, but don't offer it if you don't want to follow through. Why not offer a discounted first month or something? There are so many ways to draw in business without being disingenuous. read more

I have been going to Squared Circle New York for about a month to help me get into shape to fight my Crohns disease, increase my cardio and assist in my breathing so perhaps I can toss the inhaler one day. From the first day i was made to feel as if part of the family. The feature i love most is the size of the training center. It is a one studio facility which allows everyone including the owners and coaches to know your name from day 1. The classes are not too large (biggest class I have been in was 12 people). The coaches are great at showing you the proper form and understand not everyone in the class is at the same level which made a new person like me feel very comfortable. All of the students I have encountered are friendly and always willing to give pointers during the classes. There are no egos at this place. I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn a great skill and get into shape. read more

I've been to many gyms and none of them was like this one. Hands down the best gym I've been too. I went for a class and it was one of the best class I've attendeFrom the moment I walked in it didn't have that musky scent that most gyms have. It smelled cleaned and it was bare able to actually train in. The trainers there are so hands on and always got an eye on you. They actually help and correct you in exercises. This is an excellent gym with a staff that has a passion for martial arts, fitness and health. I joined about a year ago and I always look forward to getting a workout in. Being in an environment where you feel comfortable and welcomed is key; this place nails it. Kru Rob is a wealth of knowledge and very keen on technique. This is why I chose to learn Muay Thai at Square Circle and will continue to train and spar here. I would recommend this gym for more advanced/experienced fighters too as there are several different tiered classes based on skill level. There are also plenty of sparring sessions to practice the technique with amateur, pro and other novice fighters. Great BJJ program too. Clean/new equipment. I enjoy working out at Square Circle. It's in the heart of Wall Street, and gives you this underground fight club feel, that you must be "in the know," to find. They focus on the art of the fight and making you good at it. They emphasize technique, discipline and catering to people who really want to learn the art of MMA fighting. Be prepared that you will need to buy your own gear. If you really want to learn how to fight and be taught by black belts in Brazilian Jiujitsu this is the place for you. You will get a great workout and they have classes at lunch time each day if you're a finance gal or guy who wants to blow off some steam from work. I have been learning Muay Thai as a member of Square Circle for about six months. The equipment and facilities are clean and well maintained. The instructors are all friendly and participate in workouts when they are not teaching. I find the workouts to be challenging, yet paced to the level of the individual participant's fitness levels. The instructors and proprietors are all seriously minded Muay Thai practitioners and participate in organized amateur and professional competitions. The thing i like most about Square Circle is the sense of community created by Kru Rob and Kru Bea, and fostered by the coaches and students of the gym. Everyone is friends with everyone else and there is a true team atmosphere. I am very happy to be a member of Square Circle and would recommend it to anyone at any fitness level. read more

I went there for a free trial. I had 1 on 1 with a Muay Thai instructor. We spent like 30 minutes for the session. I did some warm up, and he showed me a basic strike combo(Jab and cross punch). After the session, the guy really tried to get me sign up for monthly membership with 6 months contract. He really did pressure me and made me feel guilty into signing up. However, it didn't work and it actually forced me away. I meant if the club is really good, why they need to force you into signing up for 6 months contract? Pro: - Nice facility - Good attention from instructors - Friendly staff Con: - Pressure for enrollment - The guy told me BJJ instructor doesn't even have a black -belt - The instructor he actually is training at other fighting club. Why I know? Because I went to other club and I saw him there. Overall, I'm not recommend you to enroll if you want to learn MMA. However, I believe they have great muay thai program. read more

Square Circle New York is an excellent martial arts gym with instructors that really try to get you to feel as comfortable with the classes as possible. You can go to other gyms that may show you similar techniques but few can match SCNY's welcoming nature. These guys and gals love what they do and it shows every day on the mats. I should start off by saying that this place truly is as good as it gets. I have tried out their Muay Thai Fundamentals class for free and paid the drop-in rate of $25 for an MMA class, since I had never trained in either of the two. Both were great workouts and the instructors were very hands on and goal oriented for each class. However, I'm giving it 4 stars being as their current schedule isn't as perfect as it could be for me. They have been very flexible in other regards, and notified me that they review the scheduling of classes every three months in order to best accodomate their students. The gym is most certainly a gem in the financial district. I don't think its possible to find another like it. read more

After getting a job in the neighborhood, I was super excited about signing up here. But this school is the King of Fine Print. Check them out on Groupon. The 1 month free trial is only 4 Wednesday classes at 5:30, doesn't matter if you can't make it during that time. So don't show up and waste your time, if that doesn't work for you. After my initial "assessment" and "1 month trial" they said if I sign up I could only train 2 days a week there, and on specific days that are pre-established and can't be changed for any reason. I am not kidding. This school charges as much if not more than all the other great Muay Thai and BJJ schools in the city but only allows you to train 2 times a week on pre arranged days that can't be changed. I was so shocked, I kept thinking maybe I did something during the classes and he really doesn't want me to sign up there. I couldn't even imagine that's a real setup that a martial arts school would have with so many other options in the city. This was a couple of years ago, I've trained somewhere else since then. I am not sure why Square Circle didn't want my money back then. But I just saw their shady Groupon deal, that somewhere in the print mentions it's only for 12-1 classes, mon-thurs. I give it one star, because my teep is better to this day because of a couple of pointers the owner gave me during the few classes that I was there. read more

I've been training Muay Thai at Square Circle for just over a year. From the beginning, you're made to feel welcomed and treated like family. Kru Rob and the rest of the staff are particular about teaching proper form and fundamentals. The workouts are physically challenging but incredibly fun. I first came to Square Circle with a Groupon and started taking Muay Thai classes once or twice a week. I decided to come here because I'm an actress and felt I needed some training in kickboxing for possible stunt scenes/auditions. I had absolutely no interest in any of the classes offered here outside the context of my acting training but once I started taking Muay Thai classes, I really started enjoying them and they became a strict part of my new weekly schedule. I like all the staff members working at this gym and Kru Rob is my favorite instructor. The environment is very friendly. I am always amazed by how friendly and helpful my classmates are (especially those that have extensive experience in Muay Thai). I've been coming to Square Circle for the past 3 months, and I already have a good understanding of basic Muay Thai technique and I feel that I'm improving every week! read more

I came in very excited to join a new Jujitsu gym. I have never joined a gym, esp one that locks you into a 6mo contract, without trying at least 1 class. This place claims to offer 30 day free trial but this is a false advertisement! Its only 4 days because you can only go 1 day a week and they ask you what days you come in and pick the free trial day on the day you cant attend. I am a grad student and cant attend Saturday meetings and that was the only day they offered the free trial even though they had plenty of classes in the week. The gym did not even try to accommodate. I found it interesting that other interested customers was offered free trails on Wednesdays. I didn't like the sneakiness of the gym. Im sure this place is a great gym but Ill never really know since I could actually try a class. If you are someone who needs to try a class before joining or signing a contract.... Beware of deceptive marketing/sales tactics. A "30 day free trial" is advertised on the site. But you have to come in for an "assessment" first. After this 30 min assessment, they push you to sign up for a membership which is overpriced I'll add. But back to the "free trial". Apparently it's only Wednesday 5:30 classes that are free the first month, meaning you only get a 4 day free trial really. That is if you can make those classes.
