I had a good talk with the owner. They've installed an air purifier, they're complying with occupancy standards, they've removed the "you don't really have to wear a mask" sign...they're trying. This is still one of my favorite places. The owner himself is kind and friendly and community oriented. The food is delicious. The atmosphere has always been warm and inviting. I love the people who work here. Covid has been a huge challenge for everyone, personally, economically, socially, etc. As a business owner you're walking a fine line all the time between safety and financial survival. I applaud these folks for doing their best, and the owner for talking to me about my review. I will still encourage him to require the staff to be more diligent about masks to cover both mouth and nose - we are up to 150,000 deaths and currently hospitals are being overrun as infection and hospitalization rates climb again in our country. This isn't fake news. But again, the fact that he sought me out to have a reasonable and friendly discussion impressed me, and reminds me of why I love this place. He cares about the community, in all its diversity of thought. read more

Disappointing! Out in the middle of nowhere. Room was old. 6:45 AM gardeners using weed eaters outside out window and leaf blower at our front door. The door locks were a puzzle to use then wouldn't lock. Rating was 8.0+ not sure why. 12 miles outside Leavenworth. Restaurant was average. Staff was very friendly and helpful when TV didn't work. I booked this hotel through Expedia. It was supposed to be a reserve now pay later. I got the email saying the fees would be collected at the property. I then got an email from my bank indicating that I had been charged for the full amount. I tried to undo everything because the whole reason I did the reserve now pay later was so I'd have time to save for the trip. Single mom. Not a lot of extra money. I literally had this reservation for all of about ten minutes. They charged me a 50% cancellation fee (so hundreds of dollars) and refused Expedia requests to refund the money. And so far they haven't processed the cancellation so I'm still out the full amount. I just feel like this was a crappy thing to do since I shouldnt have been charged up front to begin with. I travel as much as I can afford to and I've never had this type of issue with any hotel. read more

I don't even know what to say, other than this was the worst lodging experience my family has ever had. We had to scramble to make a reservation, as our original Leavenworth plans had to change. This was the only place we could find. When my husband made the reservation, he asked for a confirmation number. Apparently, this place doesn't provide those, or confirmation emails. This should have been a red flag. They also don't have cribs for babies, which in itself is not a deal breaker, but the first time we've experienced this. Within the first couple of minutes of entering our room, the manager came in, needing to check a broken light in the room. He didn't fix it, but rather just offered free dinner. Well, we already had plans so that didn't do much. The thermostat and heater were also broken. However, we didn't find this out until about 8pm, too late to go anywhere else. All we had was a small space heater that we found in the closet. Did I mention it got down to 20 degrees that night and we had a 1 year old with us? The room Was FREEZING. Fast forward to 9:30pm, when our neighbors started thumping around their room, playing loud music. We could hear and feel all the vibrationsthe beds were rock hard, the blankets were basically a second set of sheets, and the room smelt of sulfur. The Squirrel Tree resort is absolutely outstanding. I traveled here for a mid week getaway with my wife and kids and all I have to say is WOW! The room we stayed in was beautiful and newly remodeled, the food at the restaurant was incredible, and the hospitality of the staff and owners was absolutely outstanding. I randomly stumbled upon this gem and couldn't be happier that we did! Their overall service made me a customer for life! This wonderful place is nestled away in the middle of the forest and is a quick and easy drive to Leavenworth, which we made multiple times a day. Great burger, actually. I got the mushroom burger with onions and provolone, I believe. It was pretty delicious and you got a big side of crispy fries. Price was average, like Red Robin pricing. Atmosphere was to be expected, complete with paintings of the woods and wild animals. A bit run down but I guess that added to the charm. We stayed at the 59'er diner cabins so it was in the perfect location for us. It wouldn't be my first choice, but we'd go again without fear. Also, they had a living wage tax added to the bill (we had to look up what that was) so just something to be aware of. read more

I'm giving this 5 Stars because on splurge day, their burgers are what I crave. Very good.... BUT, we're locals so we go often, went for breakfast this weekend and I ordered the Eggs Benedict, the eggs were raw! I saw them giggling as she walked over to us, it's amazing they stayed on the plate. I'm one that hates complaining but I had to send them back, the egg whites were clear!!! No apology from the server either. That is a major no no and very dangerous to serve raw eggs. Yuk. I'm still so grossed out, I will never order Eggs Benedict there again. Came here per recommendation. Everything was okay. My husband is very nice and honestly I felt like tipped too much for our dinner. All in all we ended up paying 50 for one meal. My daughter and myself don't have big appetites and walking out forgot our left overs on the table. By the time my husband turned around to grab them the waitress kinda shrugged her shoulders and said she already cleaned it up and threw it away. Stopping in on way back from camping and I'm liking it (glad we went here instead of 59er Diner). Food - good. Not cheap, but not too pricey. Service - great. The lady was super nice. When we were in the restroom she asked our kids if they wanted juice or cocoa and they ordered. This place really wasn't worth stopping at. Would have been better to grab dinner from the gas station next door. Service was insanely slow and actually almost non-existent. We didn't get silverware, napkins, refills. There were only two food options when we got there, fried chicken strips or fish and chips with fries. After we finished we didn't get the bill, after ten minutes I went to the bar to get the bill. It took her ten minutes to bring it to us and even though we were ready to pay she didn't take it. I went to the bar again and waited and was finally able to pay. I don't think the bad service was her fault, but management should know better than to leave one person to take care of a busy bar and diner! The place is very small with a small bar which was full of customers and the 5 tables were almost all occupied. The one good thing was the juke box that had a lot of music options. After completing a four day camping trip where we had received not of a death in the family we were exhausted, emotional and barely functioning. We have a forty foot trailer and two dogs to Worry about whenever we think about stopping to eat anywhere. When we walked in we found that even in the light of being understaffed Lori was pleasant, bustling and very eager to make our dining experience pleasant. Originally we were planning on just ordering to go until we realized there was a back sitting area. She happily agreed to let us sit back there and that the dogs were more than welcome to sit with us as well. That furthermore we could use the dog run that the have in the backyard if we would like. The food was great, the portions were huge. They have plenty of parking for large rigs and the service was great even if Lori was understaffed and behind. read more

We have been coming here for years and we always get the farmers omelet to share it's very good, we also order a double Bloody Mary each but when we got the bill we were shocked 18 dollars a drink so basically we each had one drink (yes a double) and shared a breakfast for 53$ plus tip 60 and service has went down hill also. I stayed one night alone there this week and woke up to a dead battery in my car which I at first thought was a dead fob. The owner of the Squirrel Tree Vito, his staff, the woman working in the bar and even the young man working next door at the gas station went way out of their way to help me. I live in Kansas where people are generally helpful and friendly but I travel a lot and often find this is not the case everywhere. It is definitely the case at the Squirrel Tree. They went so far as to go to the local hardware store to get batteries for my fob. Unfortunately the whole battery was dead so I ended up calling a tow truck but not until after hours of people at the ST trying to help me. The place is very nice, my room was like a nice Air BnB room and the restaurant and bar were also very nice. I received a free meal for my trouble and enjoyed staying there. The food was very good and everyone was just so nice. Unfortunately, I'll probably not be back up this way but I will recommend to others that they stay here. I stayed on a Monday but they have a nice outdoor courtyard and I bet the place is alive with music and people on the weekends (and when the temperature isn't 103 which it was when I was there.) Anyway, although I had some bad luck while I was there so I was happy to leave, I would recommend this place and it's sweet people to anyone. It was great value all the way around as well, a very reasonable price for a very nice place. Forgot to say, I had an AMAZING banana milkshake, huge and loaded with whipped cream on top! read more

I have stopped by the Squirrel Tree several times, this is my first Yelp review. All of my experiences have been about the same. The food is fine, what you expect from a road side diner. The wait staff is really nice; however, the service is a bit slow because they are really understaffed. The restaurant is tired and largely worn out, but somehow its a bit charming. The Squirrel Tree can be so much more. Keep it authentic, but clean it up, update the tables and chairs, and clean the bathroom. Perhaps put a little effort into the uninspired menu. Your kitchen and serving staff are good hardworking people wanting to serve their customers, give them something to work with. Remember, you are the only game in town, that means you still can stand out, not be lazy. read more

The food here was alright, but the service was horrible. When we got there, there was one group of four just finishing up. But for some reason, it still took almost 10 minutes before someone showed up to take our order, even for drinks. As for drinks, we didn't actually receive our drinks until after our meal, and only because I asked how much longer the drinks would take. Turned out that the drink order had been completely forgotten. As for our food, there were quite a few mix-ups as to what entrees and soups we ordered. One person ended up without anything to eat until we reordered something for them. I had to actually argue with the waitress over whether I'd ordered chili or soup (and believe me, I did not order the chili). All in all, it was a pretty bad experience. Granted I haven't been in since this experience happened, but in 2014, my then boyfriend, my two daughters and a family friend stopped in on our way home from my sister's wedding in Levenworth. My then 2-year-old daughter was a bit fussy but not very loud after we ordered our food while we were waiting, one of the servers came up to our table and asked that I take my toddler out of the restaurant because patrons of the bar were complaining about her fussing. I had to have my food boxed up and didn't get hot food and when I got to eat it when we returned to Monroe, I was gross. We stayed in the motel for one night because it was literally the only room available in the Leavenworth area. I noticed that the heater was making a loud buzzing noise. I couldn't find out how to turn the heater off because the thermostat was broken. I called management and he stopped by and turned off the heater, but the noise still didn't go away. He said he would offer us a free dinner (similar gesture that another reviewer mentioned, this seems to be his go to way of gliding over issues he can't solve). Chalet style roadside restaurant and lounge with much more potential than its current pitiful state. Food is traditional Americana with no frills. Crowd is usually roadside travelers on Hwy2 and seasonally fluctuates with peak travel times. Staff is nice enough. They appear to be downtrodden and overworked. It appears as if someone used to care but became greedy as the volume of roadside travel increased. As of a year ago the food was quite good, even if over priced, and possibly even made with passion. Now it has become a poster child for lower quality ingredients plated with an overpriced bill. Save your money. read more

What a great little gem of a spot. We recently stayed here on a trip to Lake Wenatchee and really enjoyed our stay as well as our meals. The rooms are cozy and clean. Despite being the only resort close by, they are still a great value for the money. The beds are comfortable and the room is very clean. The food is great Americana that traces its roots back to another time. The place has a timeless charm, ad the menu fits it perfectly. It is increasingly hard to find good diner style food any more. Most places have tired food that coasts on former glory. My dinner was excellent. I had a great french dip that made me think of my grandma. For breakfast I had chicken fried steak that made me have to do a double take to make sure I wasn't in a diner in the deep south. For both breakfast and dinner the food had good portions . I walked away stuffed. I highly recommend staying and dining here if you are in the area. read more

I stayed two nights for a local wedding, just me because my wife was part of the bridal party. The lodge was quite and the room was clean and cozy. I wandered down to the bar and restaurant on site for a bit. All in all it felt like a relaxing escape from reality compared to the mayhem that weddings usually bring. We like to stop in for breakfast on our last day of camping at Lake Wenatchee, go back in time and have a hardy breakfast. Staff is a little slow but the food was really good. Huge pancakes (biscuit type pancake), big links of sausage (sweet type and not salty), real eggs not cooked in lots of oil/butter, veggie omelet with lots of veggies, and the hash browns were nice and crunchy on the edges. Squirrel Tree has changed management, and we had heard the drinks and the food weren't up to snuff like before. This past Friday on our way to camp on the Wenatchee River, we decided to stop for a drink and dinner and sat in the bar like we used to. The bartender, Terry, used to work at Headwaters (another nearby watering hold) and the drinks were surprisingly good! A strong pour of booze, unlike the other bar he worked at. It was prime rib special that night, and I went for the 8 oz portion. It started off with a super fresh green salad w/ baby corn, pepperoncini, carrots, olives, cheese, homemade croutons and THE BEST raspberry vinaigrette. Came w/ real mashed potatoes and gravy and steamed veggies. At $17.95, it felt a little pricey but then again it did come with a starter salad and the prime rib was tender, juicy, and cooked perfectly to order (med-well). Only downside is my slice was pretty fatty, but prime rib tends to be so no stars knocked off. Service was great, and when burgers are approaching $14.95, the prime rib felt like a deal.Husband had the monte cristo sandwich w/ tots. He asked for real cheddar instead of American cheese, and they even threw in some swiss cheese along with the turkey and ham. Dusted with powdered sugar, it was both a sweet and savory combination. This isn't fine dining, it's comfort dining. Joints like these don't necessarily specialize in personalized service. That said, Terry, who worked the bar service, was a great bartender and server. Sure, things have changed and the prices have gone up a bit, but it's still the Squirrel Tree and still a worthy stop off Hwy 2. read more

The next morning we ate next door for breakfaset and the waitress was more than lacking in more than one area. Had attitude when we asked for our table to be wiped up and was very slow. This is more of an FYI for everyone thinking about staying at Squirrel Tree: This is probably one of the cheaper areas in the Plain/Coles Corner area to stay at. So when heaters don't work and the water smells of sulphur (yes, the smell is annoying, but it's harmless), keep in mind, that if all that stuff is to be repaired and treated, the rates would reflect that. Easy, come prepared. I would rather deal with that than pay the exorbitant rates common in the Leavenworth area. Again folks, the situation with the water has been like this since the 90's. That's how long I've been coming here. But it's one of the only places where you're likely to make a reservation day of. It's very laid back, but I appreciate the owner and staff being accommodating when I, for example, am checking in late. I knew I wouldn't be rolling in till after midnight, and they texted me the room number and access code. The new owner has done an incredible amount of work on the restaurant creating a great atmosphere for locals and out-of-towners alike. The menu has significantly improved compared to its early days (which says a lot about the state of things back in the day). Enjoy the relatively low lodging rates while they last. read more
