So I hadn't been on a bike in a few years due to a pretty nasty fall and finally decided I was ready to get back on the road. I visited a few different bike shops and felt either overwhelmed by the variety of options or underwhelmed by the customer service...until I walked into Downtown Bike. The owner Aaron greeted me right away and was very helpful throughout the whole process. I told Aaron what I was looking for and instead of throwing a bunch of bike lingo at me that I wouldn't understand he just listened and explained differences between bike variations and some common preferences of riders. I purchased a BMX bike that fit my needs, Aaron put it all together and made sure it would ride clean, and I was on my way. Location is perfect. So, did some Yelp searching looking for a bike shop in Puyallup. Did not have to go far to find Downtown Bike in results and read the really good feedback. I went there before purchasing my bike, from another source, to ask questions about fenders, bike chains, bike locks, etc. Everyone there that day was really helpful, including one of them showing me their own bike chain since I'd never used one before. Left with a lot of information and a better idea. Checked bike to make sure it had places to put fenders. Check. Got it. Came back several weeks later (drop off Sept 11th or so?) with bike in hand for a tune-up and to purchase fenders to go with it. Was looking for a more permanent solution that was sturdy instead of the clip on ones. I ended up dealing with Aaron the second time. He showed me the fenders they could order for my bike with 700CC tires and we discussed if I wanted exact fit or slightly larger. Very helpful when it came to that discussion. Was told 2 to 3 weeks, maybe sooner if they could get to it sooner, since it was during the end of summer rush. Fast forward to September 20th and I get a call saying it is done. Wasn't able to get there until today. Well... my husband was able to for me. Picked it up and let me know, since I was at work, that it looked really nice. Like fenders were part of the bike that we purchased originally. They did such a great job on installation (free since I purchased it there). The tune up that I paid for as well seemed to be a great idea since this evening was my first time riding it and it was such a smooth ride. My bike looks and rides amazing. I just wanted to leave a good note about the great team at Downtown Bike. My experiences there so far have been great and educational. Would recommend. Both times that I have stopped into their shop have been a real joy. The owner takes quality time to find out your needs, wants, and what exactly would work best for you in a bike. We actually haven't paid for any products or service yet, but I do plan on taking in my recently purchased Trek Emonda in for a look over and possibly some adjusting. The owner answers questions clearly and concisely in a genuine manner. He helped get my wife inspired to purchase a new bike as well. It is a hard to describe, but how the owner conducts himself truly shows that he has your best interest in mind, and has a passion for the industry. What bad can be said about this place? Nothing. Aaron is a great guy, and very honest. Aaron has mentored me as a new guy into triathlons, and has serviced my bikes for my races and STP. I have seen quite a few interactions with customers, and they have all been of positive nature. He is a veteran of the United States Air Force, and rode professionally in his "hey day." My first encounter with Aaron is when I found him after a bad encounter at another shop. I was venting my frustration; however, he did not bad-mouth the other shop. Aaron helped me pick out and buy a bike for my son over the phone which took an hour but he never rushed me and answered all the questions I had. Actually took our bikes, a Trek road bike and Sun recumbent trike, on the first day Erin was in his new location. The sign wasn't even up! He tuned our bikes for the first time in two years, trued my back tire, fixed a broken spoke, and had in stock new grips for my old Giant hybrid. He was knowledgeable and the bikes ran great. My wife and I both went on a long ride as we left the store, and we could not be happier. Bikes were done in a few hours, and the price was what I expected. Before truing the tire and fixing the spoke, he called me to ok with a fair price, too. Best thing of all is that he is down town about three blocks away. We walked to pick them up. read more

A wonderful experience on a stressful day! My mother-in-law and I were visiting my family during the 2018 Seattle-to-Portland bike ride that my husband, father in law, and sister in law were riding in. After a morning of several bike malfunctions from our riders, mom-in-law and I decided to stop into Downtown Bike and grab some extra tire tubes. Both men working told us they had opened early that day because of the STP, and we were very grateful they were open (as other bike shops were closed that day). They not only sold us the tubes and a multi-purpose tool cheaper than other specialty bike shops, they kindly threw in an adapter for free that my husband lost on one of his wheels. The men also asked us if our riders needed any extra supplies that they sold in the shop. Overall, I would definitely stop in next year during the STP again! read more

My bike needed a new gear cassette and chain after a couple of years of riding up and down the foothills trail on a daily basis. Slightly before noon, I took the bike to Downtown Bike in Puyallup. Aaron provided me a quote that I felt was very reasonable. He had the necessary parts in stock. I left the bike. Aaron called me about three hours later. He indicated that the brakes needed adjustment and he could perform the necessary adjustments if I wanted. I gave the go-ahead. At 4:30, Aaron called to say that my bike was ready for pickup. The total cost was very reasonable. The speed at which the repairs were completed was very impressive. Additionally, when I picked the bike up, Aaron was very good about pointing out areas that could result in problems in the future as well as explaining the brake adjustments. Finally! A bike shop in downtown Puyallup. And even better! The owner, Aaron, is as honest, knowledgeable, friendly, and fair as they come. I've gotten 3 bike tune-ups from Downtown Bike, one of which was FREE during the Puyallup Farmer's Market. I love my bikes but, admittedly, know next to nothing about their care and maintenance. Aaron was not judgy about that and actually asked if I would be interested in attending some basic bike maintenance classes. Yes, yes I would. More than anything, I appreciate the fact that despite being new to the downtown Puyallup scene, Aaron has already done a ton of public outreach in his partnerships with the City of Puyallup and Puyallup Farmer's Market. I've tried to go into this shop 5 or 6 times in the past, but they've always been closed during their "open" hours. I finally got in there when they were actually open and spoke to the very helpful friendly staff. I came back a couple hours later (3pm on a Saturday) to buy the bike I had been looking at and they were closed, even though they're supposed to be open until 5pm! We thought they might be taking a late lunch, so we ran some errands and came back at 4:10pm to buy the bike, still closed! We decided to shop elsewhere, because what's the point of coming back to Puyallup time and again if they're going to be this flakey? Nice people, but I wouldn't recommend bothering to come here since they're never open when they say they'll be. read more

I got a recumbent bike for my wife for Christmas and I went to go and fix the crank arm but quickly realized I needed a specialized tool, looked it up on the internet and realized I need a crank puller. Frantically searching I remembered there was a bike shop in town. I called them up and sure enough they had it. I went home happily and things took a turn for the worse, I ended up stripping the threads on the NORDITRACK recumbent bike crank arm ( AAAAHHHHHHH). I called him up and he said to bring it in. He went straight to work to try and fix it but unfortunately it was going to take longer than an hour which was totally fine cause I wanted to be sure it all went well. Sure enough, Thursday morning, day after Christmas, before 10 that morning I get a call saying my bike is ready, I was shocked, I came rolling in and there it was, as good as new, he looked at me and said, "You know since it was a first for me to work on this," he shook my hand and said, "Merry Christmas". I was floored. All that he did and he blessed me with a free repair, which I was happy and ready to pay, but before I said anything he up and said, "Merry Christmas, you're good to go!" I HIGHLY recommend this bike shop, awesome owner, great attitude, friendly, and ready and willing to help.
