I went to SR for the first time after purchasing a really beat-up BMW from the Facebook marketplace. There was so much wrong with the car, and they took the time to explain everything to me. They quoted me fairly and got the work done quickly. The car was working so well that I drove it from New York to California and back that very summer without issue! I returned a year later and they were just as wonderful, replacing gaskets when my engine was leaking and generally just checking out my car and making sure it was good to go. They even replaced my air filters changed my oil! The most important thing I will say is that I am a young woman who doesn't know so much about cars, and these guys are the best. They are not condescending in the least; they took the time to explain and show the problems to me, and their quotes are fair and reasonable. Worst experience I ever had, do not go here nor recommend anyone! The worker said In order to pass inspection I needed a new air filter and windshield wipers, this is a lie. Also, I filled my wiper fluid the other day and my wipers fine. When they took my car into the shop and I was outside all of a sudden there was a rip in my wiper, I am 100% accusing them of damaging my wiper for an up sell. They tried to charge $55 for wipers and $30 for an air filter. They then said I had to wait an hour lmao this place is a joke and very unprofessional, these are the type of people that give nyc mechanics a bad name. Care about your customers instead of trying to make quick money by lying and damaging their personal belongings. Point blank, this place should be shut down ASAP. read more

Went to try a new auto shop because it was conveniently located near my apartment for a simple and 10 minute oil change. They managed to strip the bolt in the oil panel causing oil to leak. They told us it was not drivable and proceeded to tell us that we are stuck and we could not drive anywhere unless we pay around 600+ for new parts and labor. We said we did not agree with their evaluation as we never had this problem until we came to them. Then we said we didn't care and refused to get the "necessary " work done with them in order to drive it. Then out of nowhere they temporarily fixed it after telling us they couldn't do anything. We then took it to our usual auto shop and he confirmed they stripped the bolt and quoted us $200 for everything. DO NOT LET THESE PEOPLE TRY TO PULL A FAST ONE ON YOU! read more

I went here because I needed the NY inspection sticker after registering my CA purchased car in NY. My 2006 Toyota Camry had just received a full service and repair at the Toyota dealership and everything was working and in top shape. Unfortunately, they were unwilling to provide the NY inspection sticker without replacing all of my tires even though the tread was not worn down the slightest. I researched a little more on Yelp and found Urban Classics Auto Repair which is a Triple A recommended repair shop. Went here because I needed to register a used car in NY for the first time and needed an inspection, and they seemed trustworthy due to the glowing reviews here. I was told that my car would need about $1400 in "mandatory" work just to pass inspection, and when I asked for an itemized breakdown it seemed a bit vague and nitpicky. Slightly suspicious, I paid my $40 for the inspection and took the car instead to Urban Classics in Brooklyn Heights for a second opinion. One of the guys here even had the audacity to get angry with me for wanting to take my car to a BMW specialist for a second opinion on the repairs. Sorry for calling you out on your BS, dude. Got a second opinion, the car passed without question, and I was told that the repairs were only "suggested". These guys basically just tried to take advantage of me for $1400 because it was my first time registering in NY. If you need an inspection try it out but if they tell you work needs to be done get a second opinion I cannot stress that enough. Nothing needs the excessive amount of labor they will try to get you to pay for. Went to my other guy and was passed no problem. These guys were recommended to me by my high school friend, whose family has had a good relationship with them for a long time. They were AMAZING! I was buying my first car off Craigslist, not really knowing what to look for or ask about, and luckily the guy I bought the car from agreed to take it to Tariq and Sam to have it checked out. They appraised the car properly and got me a good deal on it, and then repaired it and did preventive maintenance incredibly quickly, huge engine and exhaust work within two days! And not only that but they did their research and tried to get me the best deals on the parts I needed, and asked me whether I wanted some nonessential work done or not in order to save me money. They described the whole thing so I could understand it and make an informed decision. Then I found little things that were off about the car so I took it back to them every day for three days running, and they fixed them up free of charge (!), then called me to check up on me and ask me how it was going. Both Tariq and Sam are total sweethearts and easy to talk to and Isaac, their dad, is incredibly lovely. They knew that I was taking the car on a long road trip and did all their work in a timely manner and with great care. I'm on the road now and so far so good! Dropped my car off for a inspection and oil change. Told me I needed four new tires and both my back and front breaks done in order to pass inspection. The car is a 2015 so not that old for both the breaks to need to be completely replaced already. I was upset and decided to pick the car up not inspected, took the car around the corner and had someone else do my inspection which it passed. Things might be suggested but this place will say you need it done or it won't pass. Seems to be there trend if you read other reviews. read more

Called on Friday to make an appt for auto inspection. Guy tells me to be at shop first thing Sat morning at eight. I drag myself out of bed on my one day off this week and when I get there the place is closed. Circle the block a couple times until 8:05 when I see a guy unlocking the gates. I pull up and say why I'm there and he tells me "we aren't doing those." Wtf? Treats me like he can't be bothered. I explain about the guy on the phone and he's unmoved. I say I can wait and he says, "you can but I don't even know what's inside yet." Yeah, no. Being treated like a bother by a company? Don't worry. I don't burden you with giving you business or my money. read more

Nice guys. Pretty straight forward. Had my front end alignment done. Rotated my tires. Had my coolant replaced. That was great. They discovered that I needed to replace my rotors due to rust and that my rear drum cylinders were leaking. I would certainly trust them to do that work. However, I pointed out that my high pressure A/C service port had a slow leak at the valve. I asked if they could fix just the port. They said no, the whole A/C pipe had to be replaced. I asked if they were sure and they said they have seen this before -- that's what had to be done. So I asked them to look up how much that would run me. $470 for the pipe, 4-5 hours of labor, and the cost of new refrigerant. My first problem with this is that the port is a $7 part at pep boys which is threaded and includes an o-ring. It's not welded in. The port is designed to be swapped out if the internal valve goes bad, which is exactly my case. They should know better! So it seems they are not very professional or experienced when it comes to A/C systems. My second problem. This I'm kind of pissed about. First at myself and then at them. When they gave me the bill: $90 for the alignment. Expected (heavy duty van). $20 or $30 for the tire rotation. Expected. $75 for the coolant swap combined with (what?) A/C service. I brought in my own coolant so it was supposed to be about $35 for fluid change. I asked why I was being charged for A/C and he said for the time they put in. I was in a hurry to get out of there, but really I'm a dumb ass for letting that slide. There was no description for the work they did. Why? because they didn't do any work on the A/C. Their time is worth my money -- I want to pay them for their work. The state of my A/C system was exactly the same before and after their service. Nothing was done to the A/C. But they just slapped me with a $40 charge for looking up the cost of a new A/C pipe. They charged me $40 for a quote! Who friggin charges you for a quote? I probably would have gone back to them to get the $850 brake job done after I did the research (I'm handy -- I research all mechanic work to see if I could and want to do it myself). But that cheapo maneuver of theirs was so lame -- I'm going to find someone else. (Unless they read this, realize how dumb that was, and call me to refund the measly $40). For nuts and bolts, I think they are probably pretty good. read more

These guys are great! Went in for an inspection on my BMW. They called and said there was an issue w the tires that was preventing them from moving forward w the inspection. Very transparent and honest about what my car needed to pass. I knew 3 tires were on their last leg, so totally accurate in their assessment! They went as far as to send 2 guys to my apt and help take down an extra set of rims I wanted to use instead that were in a storage area above my closet. Wow! Talk about going the extra mile ;) Will def go back. Such a pleasant experience. Note: they didn't try to push the more expensive tires and gave me several options from the lowest - mid range. I opted to get a top performance tire that I researched myself. They found them and car was ready for pick up in a few hrs! Will def go back there moving forward. read more

Shop around for an inspection I spoke with my regular mechanic and told me I should have never had the work done here

I've taken my car to SR a few times and they always deliver. Most recently I visited them after taking my 03 Civic to the dealer and being told that repairs were going to cost me an arm and a leg. SR gave me a second opinion and explained that the dealer usually will try to just replace everything brand new, when sometimes fixing the existing part is the easier, smarter and cheaper solution. Not only that, but SR also detected that my brake pads needed to be replaced, something that the dealer seemed to have overlooked, and it still all came out to about $500 cheaper than what the dealer was going to charge. I find that I can trust SR, and that they're not trying to rip their customers off like a lot of other auto places do. High recommend these folks the next time your car has issues. read more

I have an older Land Rover Discovery and have had many problems with it, but I am so glad I found S R Auto Repair, they're extremely knowledgeable and their prices are beyond fair. My car broke down in the city and at 1st I called triple A and had them tow it to one of their approved repair shops and the service guy their gave me an outlandish estimate $2671!!!! So I called around and S R helped me get towed out of their for less that it would've cost me thru AAA and assessed the problem and fixed it for waaaaaaaay way less than that. My boyfriend and I recently purchased a used VW Jetta GLI and had noticed a few things wrong with the alignment and wanted to get it looked at. We live a few miles from SR but did not mind traveling further to have them look at our car due to their fantastic reviews on yelp. and I've joined the 5 star club! - I cannot recommend them highly enough. Our car ended up being unsafe to drive - with the engine almost having fallen out of the front of the car, and I'm so glad we took it in when we did! They suggested a few repairs, but before making them asked that we return to the garage to see for ourselves the actual issues with the car. Not being mechanically minded, the bf and I really appreciated the extra lengths that SR went to make us feel as though we were being taken care of as well as the time they took to explain and show us the actual problems with the car. We picked it up a few days later and everything was fixed and the car has been running great ever since. I wish I had brought the car to them months ago while the car was still under warranty, but at least I know that we have a go-to-reliable-reasonably priced-super competent and friendly mechanic to go to when any future problems arise. These guys are competent, honest and very well-priced. I most recently had to replace the transmission in my old beater. SR Auto was able to source a cheap, used transmission and did all the work for less than half of what anyone else quoted. To top things off, they also did the work very quickly. Great experience at SR auto. I brought my low mileage but oldish 2001 Prizm in for inspection. I asked them to please do a complete check-up to see if I needed anything else. Turns out, I needed new rear brakes and struts., Before commencing, they called me to let me know exactly what they would be doing and how much it would cost me.They wanted to make sure I was ok with their findings. . I said go ahead. The charges were reasonable and the car was ready the next day! My car is running more smoothly than I can remember.. They also changed the oil and put in a new air filter, but did not try to sell me anything else - even when I asked them about other possible areas of weakness. And, they fixed my hood which was not closing properly at no fee!! I live in Manhattan (where all the good mechanics have been forced out due to exorbitant rents) and I found the place very convenient to get to. I took the G train ( the subway entrance is one block away) two stops to Court Square and quickly was back in Manhattan. Highly recommend and I will go back there! read more
