Finding a good mechanic is like finding a good dentist. With my car, I can't think of anyone better and more skilled than Jack and his son. I have been coming here since the 90's and they never disappointed by the service delivered. He is extremely honest, and I always leave with a piece of mind. They always do the right thing, everything is explained to me in a way I understand what is wrong with my car and how to fix it. Jack also points out what may become an issue and what to keep an eye on without forcing me to fixing things that are not urgent or do not pose a safety issue. Because I moved from NY to CT I went to a local BMW shop. What a mistake this was, my car got worse not better. I decided to bring the car back to Dr. Jack, he explained what was done incorrectly and fixed. I leave his shop confident that work is performed correctly and with original BMW parts. As long as Jack is in business this will be my shop, even if I have to drive 2+ hours. Of the car needs to stay for couple of days I do not mind taking the train back. Living nearby, I really wanted to like this place. From the get-go (and throughout) the communication and scheduling were both poor. I gave an extra star because I do believe it's an honest business, which with mechanics, is something to appreciate. I of course don't know if the owner hates his job, but it sure seems that way. At every turn, my business seemed to be met with disdain. I was made to feel like I was asking for a favor (instead of paying good $$ for expensive inspection repairs). My earnest questions received sighs and visible frustration. I was told 1 thing on the phone, then another happened. Two separate times. Sure, everyone makes mistakes, but in response I was told, without equivocation, that I had remembered things incorrectly. That it was my fault, period. On top of that, a service I requested quite clearly at the outset, was never completed. A "sorry"? A "our mistake"? An attempt to make up for it? No. Simply a cold "we don't have time to do that today". Life is too short to patronize businesses that spread such negativity. read more

I have been going to JK Automotive for about two years. I always appreciated that the owner did not mind answering my questions even asking about small things like the price difference of engine oil filter between this year and last year saying the price doubled this year for the market reason. But after our latest pretty questionable experience with JK Automative, I'm really disappointed with the service here, and I'm not sure how much I can trust his answers. We've been customers here for about a year based on a friend's recommendation. We took our car in for the yearly inspection and also an engine oil/filter change. Passed the inspection and got the oil change, seemed like no problem, though of course while they did the oil change they said they saw some other problems with the CV boot that we'd have to pay hundreds of dollars to fix in the future. But nothing too bad up until there. Then later that day, we drove the car for about 5-10 minutes, just a few miles and we hear a loud scraping sound and the car behind us starts flashing it's lights that something's wrong. When we pull over, we see that a part of the bottom of the car is hanging loose and was dragging on the street and some liquid is pouring out of the bottom. We have our two year old in the car, so we wanted to be extra safe, thinking bottom of the car dragging on the highway, not a good thing. Long story short, we waste a lot of time and money, getting our car towed on one of the hottest days of the year, and it was a crappy, stressful experience for us all. Anyway, so then when we went to talk to JK Automotive about what happened, they tell us that a few clips (4-5) are missing from the bottom cover of our car, but it's not their fault. They temporarily fix it with plastic zip-ties and say they'll order the proper clip, but will charge us for them. They don't take responsibility and say that it could have happened at any time, no one knows. It just seems really strange that a few hours after we took our car to them when they were the last people to handle our car in what's supposed to be a thorough inspection and oil change, where they were thorough enough to find other expensive problems that the bottom of our car suddenly falls off, and they say that it's not their responsibility and that they think it happened from us driving a few miles on the highway. That seems at the very least unlikely...since, we never had this problem in all the years we've driven the car...and if the clips on the bottom of the car just falls off after being driven on a highway for no apparent reason I'm guessing this is a pretty serious design flaw...not the mention we JUST took our car to this mechanic. They said that they didn't detach that bottom section our the car during the safety inspection, engine oil and filter change, and apparently finding problems with the CV boot. After we did some research, it seems that in order to drain the engine oil before an oil change the splash shield (which is the part that came loose on our car) needs to be removed, so this makes us this suspect either they didn't do a proper oil change or they aren't being honest about not having detached the splash shield. At the very least, it's disappointing that after they are the last people to handle our car, they refuse to take responsibility for a problem our car didn't have and then has few hours after we took it to them. read more

These guys are true professionals. I know a thing or two about cars, and had a really tough time finding a reliable mechanic shop that was honest and competent in the Williamsburg / Greenpoint area. I went to several different shops, all highly rated on Yelp, prior to coming here. So happy I found this place. The owner Jack is incredibly honest, and the shop charges reasonable rates for the work they do. They're happy to order parts for you or install parts you source on your own. I've had wheel bearings and u-joints replaced here, my rack and pinion replaced and key cylinder replaced, oil changes, etc. I also LOVE the fact that they have a Road Force wheel balancing machine here. That may not mean much to everyone, but it's the be-all-end-all of wheel balancing machines (and far superior to spin balancing). Take it from someone that has dealt with mechanics all up and down the car spectrum, from 1998 4Runners, to Porsches, to Audis, to Lexus, etc. I've raced a far number of cars on tracks, have done some pretty extensive modifications to my previous vehicles, and have done a good amount of off-roading as well. My point is, I know a decent amount about cars, and these guys are just great. Go here and feel confident that you're being told the truth and you're getting quality work done at a fair price. read more

Without a doubt, Jack is amazing. Being a mechanic in my youth, I know the work those guys put into my car and the price was very reasonable. Jack probably dreams about fixing cars and knows all the intricacies of various makes and models. I had a very difficult to find electrical problem and they don't give up. They have Lexus / Toyota dealer computer subscriptions so if you need diagnostic, this is the place. It's a busy shop which is a good sign but call ahead. read more

Can't say enough good things about these guys. I'll try though.. So, I've taken my truck here a few times now for various things. It's an older Jeep Cherokee XJ, and I have had a laundry list of things repaired. I tend to get my own parts because sometimes parts are harder to come by or I tend to want more custom / upgraded parts from what you can get at an auto parts store. The fact that they will install my parts is a huge win, a lot of shops won't do that! They are always friendly, extremely professional, and very very honest. In many cases, they found other things wrong and let me know what they were, which was great. They actually test drive the cars too, you would be AMAZED at how many places don't test drive a vehicle after it has been repaired. In addition, they use the most state of the art equipment for alignments and have an awesome road force tire balancing machine. Prior to moving to NY I worked on my own cars in my garage, so it's not easy for me to trust strangers with my cars. I will never take my car anywhere else and I will recommend them to everyone I know. read more

Came in early monday morning with no appointment, wanting to swap out my driveshaft with a broken U joint, with a new one that I had purchased online. Jack promised to have it done in two hours, and voila two hours later. His team was done. Great service, and fast and delivered as promise. Prices are reasonable, and they know their stuff. I've only had one experience with them thus far, but if more situations come along in the future, with jobs I can't do myself. I'll be sure to drop by and pay them a visit. This place was highly recommended by friends and, like some have said, the owner has few words to say but is kind. I don't think that the service I received was fair or professional and although I may be just one out of a hundred, I think it's important everyone knows they have their shady moments as a business. I brought my car in to be inspected in June 2012. I had also asked them to look at a problem I was having with the car when the car was idling. The inspection took over a month. I was told they couldn't get the car over a certain speed on the highway to complete the inspection. I was patient and only pushed for the car towards the end of July, when I needed the vehicle to go out of town. I was charged over $400 for a failed inspection, an inspection, and a repair that did not solve the problem I had discussed with the owner. None of this was an issue... I returned to NYC in August to find a mailed notice from the city that I had an unpaid ticket for an expired inspection sticker (and now an additional $10 penalty for lapse of payment). The location of the ticket was across from JK Auto's garage and the date of offense was while their possession, for the car to be inspected. I never received this ticket, or was notified by JK Auto that they received a ticket. They could have also added a 10-day temp sticker to the car in order to avoid this, if they were parking the car on the street (as the owner suggested when the inspection was taking so long). I stopped by the garage and brought this matter to the attention of the owner. He told me to send in the receipts for inspection, probably knowing that this was not a legitimate reason for dismissal but it would at least get me out of the garage. So I wrote the letter and photocopied the receipts and mailed it in, only to be denied the dismissal. I stopped by the garage again to discuss but an employee said the owner was out of town for two weeks and only he could deal with the matter. I then left town for work for over a month. Upon my return, I wrote the owner a letter, including copies of the ticket, dismissal of appeal and payment confirmation, asking that he, in good faith, send a reimbursement check. I have never been contacted, or received any reimbursement for the ticket... and therefore can not recommend anyone use this garage due to their unprofessional and immoral conduct. read more

I was disappointed with my experience here. I read the yelp reviews and determined that JK Automotive was a solid neighborhood place, one which I was eager to bring my business to. I brought a very good 2 year old car in for a routine oil change. My check engine light and VDC had come on a few days before, so I mentioned it to them to see if they knew what it might be. They performed a one hour diagnostic test on my car without letting me know they were going to do so, and as a result I was stuck with a $125 dollar charge that I am very unhappy about. I urge anyone who comes here to be very clear with the staff on what is going to be performed, and how much it might cost, before leaving your car with them. I wish I had been given the choice to decline the test, and if I could turn back time I would have contested the bill while I was there in the shop, as it may have yielded better results, but I was so shaken by the reality of it all that I just handed over my credit card and left as fast as I could. Update: Since I have posted my review, Marcin has been in touch with me and offered to refund me half of the 125 dollar fee for the misunderstanding. This is excellent customer service. I wish I hadn't been charged at all, but next time I will know to ask more questions. read more

Had an issue with my oil pressure and took my car here. They ran tests and couldn't find anything wrong - I left with the problem worse than it was before and less a $100. I took my car somewhere else and they immediately fixed the problem by changing the oil. Jk was a huge waste of time and money. I brought my vehicle in for state inspection and oil change in the AM and was told it should be ready at 2PM and that they'd call me if something went wrong. Around the corner comes 2PM and nobody called so I happily assume all is well and go to pick it up. I get there and the guy tells me there are issues to address and they have to scan the car's computer. Why didn't anyone call me to save me a trip? I ask how much it will cost he says not much unless they have to deep scan it. I say ok please call me if it turns out you have to deep scan it so I can decide then, and he agreed. I specifically repeat myself about wanting him to call me if it's going to cost me anything more on my way out of the store because I had a nervous feeling about him. THREE full business days go by without so much as a phone call. I almost wanted to wait and see if they would EVER call me or just keep the car, but alas I gave up and called them, and the answer did not disappoint. Rather than explain anything at all over the phone, they just told me to come in so talk to me about it...... So I go in and the guy tells me A) I failed inspection, B) They already scanned the car and fixed the problem at my cost without a single word of approval or even acknowledgment. C) I have to go drive it around a bunch myself (what kind of shop can't do this themselves?) and then bring it back to pay for a second inspection in order to get it passed. Needless to say I am taken aback by this and protest that I never asked them to fix anything and that they never even called me to tell me what was wrong. He mumbles something about thinking he had talked to someone then asks if I don't want the part they put in, suggesting he would go have it removed if I wanted. Then he said I needed it to pass inspection either way etc etc etc... and at this point I just wanted the whole thing to be done and I needed my car for work so I resigned myself to giving them everything in my wallet (because they won't take amex, go figure!) and feeling totally scammed... Oh and by the way, they charge $54 for an oil change... bout twice as much as anyone else. Likely the rest of their services are jacked up too. AVOID! read more

ibought my 2009gl320 bluetec turbocharged truck to jand k for some major repairs on my suspension and struts. they came highly reccomendded from tony auto body shop.once there i met mercin..jack s son. he is courteuous and intelligent and honest almost to a fault. his knowledge far exceeds the primadonnas at mercedes which charge u 3 times the price and do work u dont need. if you have a benz or bmw or porshe or audi and you dont go there first youre making a big mistake. thank ou mercin for great job. youre the best and half the price. sincerely...Patrick Faricelli read more

I've held off on reviewing these guys for a while, because they're already quite busy but I must say that since I got a car JK Automotive is the only reason I'm still delighted to be living in north Greenpoint lol. I bought a used BMW so as one can imagine my car is in the shop every 3-4 months for something or the other. Their communication is clear and their assessments honest and realistic, and their work is to a high standard. They don't cheap out on parts and are willing to let you supply your own if you prefer. If there's nothing they can do they will let you know that too, and not charge you. Both Jack and Martin take tremendous pride in their work and I consider myself lucky to be dealing with them especially when I hear horror stories from my friends about taking their cars to the shop.
