Pretty decent experience here--had an issue with my car stalling, and they took a look at and replaced my battery, which I expected and was at what I'd consider a standard or reasonable price --not an amazing deal, but not a ripoff--fair price for work done. They did further recommend that I replace my tires--I can't tell if that was upselling or legit--I had a recall and asked the dealer to take a look; they said I should replace them relatively soon but that also it could wait a bit. The other thing I found irksome was that I got a parking ticket notice in the mail a few weeks after the battery replacement that was clearly received while the car was here and parked on their block. I will say to their credit that they acknowledged it right away and paid it without fuss (or to be specific, reimbursed me, as by the time I received the notice the ticket was close to overdue, forcing me to pay it immediately online), but I still found it to be a nuisance. Whether the ticket was a rare occurrence for them or just a built-in expected cost for parking on city streets, I feel like they should have been aware and paid the ticket without my having to get the notice and call them to deal with it, wait to be reimbursed, etc. They did follow up a couple of times to ask if repairs were acceptable and car was running well. So I'm legitimately torn. Many positives here--it feels hard to find an honest and efficient mechanic--I will probably return the next time I have an issue, but I wouldn't say I'm fully devoted yet, as one would like to be for their car repair, and would pause and consider another option if I can find a better local rec. read more

I took my car for check engine light and OBD code pulled by my Onstar service. In the end, the repair cost me 1200+ dollars and a week without my car. I was annoyed with the time and shocked by the price, but in the end I got a high quality repair, great service and extremely high professionalism. I've been taking my car to Urban Classics Auto Repair for over four years. I have a 2007 Hyundai Azera. It's old but runs great because I get it serviced there. This small repair shop has ASE-certified mechanics. They do quality work and stand by their work, and I have never had to bring my car back for the same problem. I had the rear hub bearing assembly replaced about 2 years ago and had only driven my car about 8700 miles. About 2-3 weeks after my 2-year warranty lapsed, I took it back to Urban Classics Auto Repair. David, the owner, contacted the vendor that sold him the part to see if they would honor the warranty due to having such low mileage, which, in David's opinion, should have lasted beyond the miles I put. They didn't. This didn't sit well with him. David, the owner of Urban. He did something I didn't expect. I don't think any other repair shop manager or owner would have done what he did. He had me bring my car in, and he repaired my car at no cost to me. He said he'll keep fighting with his vendor. Now, to be clear, I wouldn't have expected him to repair my car had I driven it over 25k miles. Thank you, David, for being so considerate and mindful and having done what you did. They do shoddy work and will also hold on to your car in order to use it as their own personal vehicle for weeks without telling you. In fact, they'll tell you that they have not had a chance to work on the vehicle in the time it has been with them, but will continue to drive around town, pick up lunch and their friends that are not Urban Classics employees and generally hang out in your car. I only know because I accidentally walked past them doing so in my own car one day. Oh, they'll also bring it back damaged. The gist is I found two strangers hanging out and eating in my car as the shop was on the phone with me telling me that the car was in the garage. Stay far away from this place, they're super shady and deeply inconsiderate. If you have a quote from them, get a second opinion and if you don't see your car out front when you pass by, chances are someone's picking up a date and putting wear and tear on your car at your expense. I cannot adequately praise David Goldsmith and his team. I followed them from Brooklyn Heights to Bed-Stuy. Like with a doctor, you surrender to your mechanic and need to put your trust in them. Urban Classics treats you like they know their personal integrity is on the line. We had a difficult to diagnose issue with the car, and we spent most of the pandemic with the car in and out of the shop. They did countless kindnesses for us over that time and broke their heads working through it until they figured it out and spent many hours wiring the stereo even though they felt it wasn't their main expertise. There was a confounding difficulty that wasn't their fault, caused them crazy extra headaches and many, even, but they took responsibility for it and didn't charge me. These guys did the rack&pinion replacement on my 2014 Volvo ($5000). I got it back and now the ABS light is on. I talk to the manager, he tells me to bring it back, I do, they look at it and assure me this light has nothing to do with the work they did. The ABS sensor is broken. It's a $120 part BUT the area around it is rusted so the repair will be $900+. This seemed excessive to me so I brought it to a friend's place in Queens. $340. Now I'm wondering if I dramatically overpaid for the steering job. Dishonesty? incompetence? Fair price? Who the hell knows with these guys? But $900 for an ABS sensor is nuts. read more

For fun I've been taking my car with a check engine light on around NYC (I'm a mechanic and own a shop in Westchester). They piled on the issues from the OBD READING (reading the check engine light and at least from my reading two weeks ago) and wanted $600 to run "tests" (not a thing) ... after telling me the OBD issues (there's 1 not 3 I've checked) can't imagine what the repair fees would have been after I dropped $600 for... what they already checked on the OBD? I've gotten a few things done on my Subaru here (flat tire fix, A/C diagnosed and parts replaced, lower control arm bushings replaced, oil change) and every experience has been smooth and John was great and explained any issues that came up and how the parts work very thoroughly. I always had my dad and brothers take care of my car and since I moved away from them years ago, I tend to keep my guard up around mechanic shops and worry about being taken advantage of as a young woman, but never once did I feel disrespected. They have proved to be trustworthy time and time again. I'd say the prices are maybe a little slightly above average but very fair for the high quality and trustworthy service given. They do give a AAA discount and one time I was given a discount when my A/C repair snowballed into multiple issues and I think they felt a little bad (though not their fault, just an aging car). As far as COVID precautions go, they have plexiglass in the office and everyone has a mask on. In conclusion, I highly recommend this place and they truly provide outstanding service. I just got off the phone with John at Urban Classics and I'm really disappointed. My first experience, about a year and a half ago, was a great one with the team. They helped me identify an electrical issue in my car which they couldn't resolve, but it pointed me in the right direction which helped me to get it fixed elsewhere. The team loved my car and we enjoyed talking about it at length. They were the first people I thought of today to do some new work for me. Unfortunately when I called to have some shocks replaced which I had ordered they let me know that they would not be willing to do the work because they didn't get to order the parts for me. They use the veil of "not being able to give a parts guarantee" for the reason not to do the work. If you cant tell, I'm extremely meticulous when it comes to my car. It is an overland-built 100 series LX/LC with a ton of performance upgrades. The shocks I ordered were specific replacement parts that come with their own warranty or "guarantee". I now know that this shop is only worried about making short-term money and not retaining good long-term clients. "The parts guarantee" ensures they can charge you whatever markup they would like on the parts they order for your car. In my eyes this a way of taking advantage of their customers. Sorry to say it, but today they lost what could have been a very good long-term client. I love my car and will pay anything for good honest work which I thought I had seen here, but unfortunately that inst the case. read more

I went for a diagnostic and needed a day or two to think things over. Due to recently purchasing my car and having a river of car issues. I needed an inspection and some issues fixed immediately. I was never pressured or sold into anything. I was given an estimate and advice on what to do. In the end, I decided to proceed with Urban Classic. They had me in the system already. I've been taking my car there for both routine servicing and, initially, for some shakiness at high speeds that no other shop had diagnosed. The proprietor, David Goldsmith, took the time to investigate thoroughly, which entail various high-tech diagnostic tools, and to test drive it himself once the repair had been made. The managers at Urban Classics are great at explaining things to car-dummies like me. They lay out options for dealing with some problem that goes beyond routine servicing clearly, and they give an accurate cost estimate. They also will give a "heads up" about some potential problem that will have to be dealt with at some point in the future. Wow. I was a 20+ customer - since the time they were on Old Fulton - until today. Went to pick up my car and it had clearly been used to deliver something in Queens. (Post it note with address on console). Dave, the owner, was totally unsympathetic and admitted that it was used to pick up parts from his distributor. He called it a "road test". The funny thing is that the car was full of artificial moss and wood, so clearly it was more than a "road test" to their distributor. Maybe Dave does Bonsai trimming on the side. Good repairs and seriously excellent customer service, but it won't come cheap! This is not where you go to save a buck. They will always try to up-sell you with extra repairs beyond the bare minimum. They will always go for the best new parts and do a full inspection on your car, looking to make sure you are ahead of the curve in terms of preventing any problems before they become unsafe. That's probably why AAA recommends them. However, if your car is a beater or you know exactly what you want, it might not always be pragmatic to let these guys go so above and beyond the call of duty. read more

They are absolute angels! I've had such bad car luck during covid - 3 flats and my side mirror got knocked off. Took my car here every time. They plugged one of my flats for free and then for the side mirror I told them that I wouldn't be able to afford the 500 replacement that a new one cost. This place has been passed along from musician to musician because of the relationship the owner had with Max Roach and his ability to relate. For my group of friends, that means a group of highly critical consumers. I have never been so quick to build up trust in an establishment like this. Each of their many employees is polite and knowledgable. You can tell that they communicate well within the group and have good management. They follow up, keep their schedule, and are upfront about what they recommend, what they think is truly needed, and how much it will cost. David Goldsmith has been running his business a long time and now does a mixture of modern and classics. When David started working on my vehicle (a 1953 Ford) he was located on Gold Street and went by the name Urban Classics. As many times as I've heard David say he's GOT to get out of the classic-auto repair business, people keep coming to him. But the mix these days is good. Located almost at the foot of the Brooklyn Bridge, the shop has gotten rid of the gas-pumps. Getting national press coverage for having the most expensive gasoline didn't help, but the space was needed to accommodate the cars being repaired at the old Gulf station. Three bays with the most modern diagnostic and repair equipment and skilled technicians and David's experience and honesty make this repair shop trustworthy, efficient and worthy of my business. read more

They found an issue with the axle and said they would order the part. First time we used Urban Classics was because we'd gone to another shop for the NY safety inspection - other shop had failed the car, said we needed break rotors. I know enough about cars to know they were full of poop. Took it to Urban Classics and they confirmed my thoughts, passed the car no problem. (i just had new pads put on and these same rotors resurfaced... a year later... and the rotors are still fine!) This latest time we used Urban Classics' services, were heading out on our big relocation drive to California on Monday, the car decided not to start on Sunday. Nothing. Everything lit up like it should, turn the key, nothing. Bad timing! Had it towed to Urban Classics asap, they squeezed me in, found a break in a wire, fixed it, had us on the road same day. We made it to CA in one piece! David is great, understanding and helpful. Quick and reasonable. I feel they are truly honest. They gave me a diagnosis and the cost to repair my car. I gave them a job to work on my car. When I took my vehicle home the next day my check engine came back. I went there every Tuesday for 3 weeks on the row to complain about my check engine light back and they told me there were a new problem each time and made me pay over and over. This is a 4th week and my check engine light is still back and I spent close to $4000. Problem never fixed, they do not want to refund my money back or fix my problem, only if I pay them. I'm beyond upset. I spent much more what they originally estimated and they still want more money to fix the check engine light. Those new problems come up every week but they were not diagnosed before. Horrible! read more

Came in for a simple Oil Change to get a feel for the place, looking for a shop as my usual place just closed down. The sloppy mechanic broke off a piece of metal from the drain plug into my oil pan... they quoted me $380 to get it out! Of course wasn't gonna pay that my first time coming into a place for an oil change only. So instead they just left this foreign metal object floating around in my oil pan! Sloppy job, spilled oil all over my manifold! My car which I'm the second owner of and I baby her like the grandpa I bought her from used to, didn't start for the first time in 3 years of me owning her when I went to pick her up after the two days they spent changing my oil. Worst $50 oil change ever! Now going to have to spend many more hours fixing all the damage they did. They're kinda seemingly nice people there too, but beware a competent mechanic doesn't have to rely on sweet talking you. They very well could give your car AIDS through gross incompetence or perhaps even intentional sabotage to bring higher dollar future repairs... sounds far fetched; it's just so hard to imagine a professional shop screwing up something as simple as an oil change so badly on accident alone without making it right in the end. read more

I live in New Jersey--about 20 minutes outside of NYC. After researching cars on Consumer Reports, I was looking to buy a used 2014 Mazda 3, & I found one (that was low mileage) in Brooklyn. Not wanting to make the 75 Minute trip twice, I used Yelp! to find garages near the seller's apartment, & Urban Classics was the second one I called. The owner, Dave, answered & I explained what I hoped to do--and he agreed to check the car out for $75 the following day while I was test driving it (the seller was fine with my doing so). It was late, and Dave probably wanted to go home, but he didn't rush, and he answered all my questions patiently. I found Dave professional, friendly, & personable, and I trusted him immediately. Dave shared with me that his sister has a Mazda 3, and said that she loves hers, and that they're great cars. On Urban Classic's site I saw a video of him feeding a pigeon that "adopted" his shop--that Dave was an animal lover was the icing on the cake. When I arrived, the person at the counter was expecting me, and they knew what I was doing, and took the keys to my prospective car. I went to my credit union in case Dave gave the car the thumbs up--my plan was to get a cashier's check and buy the car. About an hour later I got the word that the car checked out. The technician said that it was going to need a battery soon, but that's to be expected, as it was the original battery. The $88 I spent (of course there's tax) was worth the piece of mind it gave me to have Dave inspect my vehicle, and I enjoyed meeting and talking with him to boot! The 75 minute trip will keep me from going to Dave for oil changes and maintenance, but after the way I was treated, I'll drive out to Brooklyn for anything major like transmission/clutch, timing belts, or a cracked engine block. These people are crooks. Brought my vehicle in on Tuesday morning saying I needed it Thursday evening. Had a noise I thought could be tires or could be bearings. Called twice to hear the diagnosis and didn't get a call back. By Thursday morning still hadn't heard anything. Finally Thursday afternoon they call to say that I do need new tires but the bearings are gone and need to be replaced for $1900. Since I needed the vehicle I picked it up, had new tires installed by Holy Land Auto who checked the bearings. No problem at all. Noise fixed. Avoid this shop. read more
