Candlelight Concert by Fever... Tribute to Michael Jackson... My friend's birthday is the same day as Michael Jackson (August 29). I asked her if ahe wanted to attend this concert at St. Andrew's Cathedral and she agreed... especially because a String Quartet was playing! I got our tickets online and received email reminders and the tickets via QRcode. Parking after 6pm was free in metered street stalls nearby. Parking at St. Andrew's Cathedral had a fee. The unfortunate thing about this venue was that it has no air-conditioning. Each pew had some lauhala hand-held manual fans, but they were to be shared. I felt a very slight breeze from the cross ventilation of the open windows. The good thing about this historical venue was the acoustics. It also had beautiful architecture, stained glass windows, graceful arches, etc. The quartet played twelve songs: Bad Human Nature Rock With You Billie Jean Say Say Say We Are The World Smooth Criminal Heal The World Remember The Time Earth Song Thriller Beat It It was wonderful to hear familiar songs in a different way! The four gals shared humorous anecdotes about the songs; sometimes snapping their fingers; sometimes tapping on their instruments (becausethere were no percussion instruments); and sometimes singing out a phrase like, "Who's Bad!" The concert was very organized. The ushers and ticket scanners seem like they've all done their jobs before. I asked about the restroom... it's in the next building and down the hall. We went early to get the best seats in our Zone C. Some of the people who arrived after us had to sit behind pillars. The doors closed promptly on time. No late entrances. Thanks to the String Quartet for playing this Tribute to Michael Jackson for the first time in Hawaii! It was fabulous! read more

Attended a public memorial for a very dear and highly respected woman who dedicated her life to Peace. Homily was presented by The Rt. Rev. Robert L. Fitzpatrick, Bishop of Hawaï'i. Members of The Kai'ulani Choir sang beautiful hymns throughout the service, and a loving Hula was performed to start off the evening's program. What a spiritual experience it was sitting in this church, looking around at the Altar and the stained glass windows, feeling the cool evening breeze flow through the sanctuary. Although I'm not a religious person, I would consider coming back for a Sunday Mass. read more

What a beautiful cathedral. Saw a string quartet preform and the sound and ambiance was amazing. I wish they had stadium seating (ha ha). There are historical portraits in the hallways, lauhala fans in the pews, stained glass windows with screens and covered walkways the restrooms and offices. read more

The Cathedral has 3 services now: 7am no choir so the short version 8am 'ōlelo Hawai'i with music and oli in Hawaiian and about half spoken Hawaiian with full choir 10am is English with some Hawaiian hymns with full choir. The program can be downloaded digitally or there is a 2 part program: a white generic program of the liturgy and a green insert with specific text and music for just that week. It is all designed so you can participate but it is also fine to just come and observe and enjoy the service. Every month there is an evensong service where everything is sung no sermon no readings. Every Wednesday there is a healing mass in the Queen Lili'uokalani chapel. There is also open chapel the hour before and after service for visitors. Lastly Every 2nd and 4th Sunday after the 10am service there is a docent on hand to give a tour of the cathedral for visitors. It's a lovely space to visit for a quiet respiteun the heart of the Capital district. read more

We attended a candlelight concert here and ambiance was so ethereal! The acoustics was very good- the music of the string quartet soared. The only downside (and it was definitely minor) was the wooden pews were uncomfortable on my butt after awhile. It was also a bit warm but there were fans to use in the pews. We came early and snagged parking in front. It's a paid lot. We've also attended weddings here in this beautiful cathedral. FYI- there's much Hawaiian history connected to this church and girls' school. You can just feel it as you walk into the church and in the adjoining hall. read more

12-11-2023 Yesterday afternoon was the 2 nd time we attended Iolani's Christmas choir concert. Last year we had an obstructed view by sitting on the left blocked by a pillar and the conductress' body. But yesterday our granddaughter's mom was the first in line and waited in full sun prepared with a chair, leis and more. Hooray cuz we ended up in the second pew as the first pew was saved for the two teachers. The view was perfect as we could see all the action: the photographer, lower and upper school choirs, the director playing the keyboard and more. One instructor shared that it is a long standing tradition for Iolani to hold it at St. Andrews Cathedral for the acoustics and beautiful venue. She made mention of the heat generated in there as evidenced by the hand fans in the pews. Wearing a face mask, it felt a couple degrees higher but if you sit back and marvel at the beauty surrounding you of stunning arches, stained glass high above and the harmony of voices plus a few solos you will be fine. Once we attended a wedding there and someone actually fainted. Hopefully that is a rare occurrence. Happy holidays hope you are enjoying the sounds of the season. Mele Kalikimaka. read more

This is a beautiful Cathedral and has a wonderful location. We found it closed when we visited so we did not get to view the interior. We were very disappointed as the stained glass windows are supposed to be gorgeous. read more

On May 1 of this year, an old friend of mine got married in St. Andrew's Cathedral. It was a small wedding, and the setting was beautiful. I gather that this church is popular as a wedding venue. It's in downtown Honolulu, and it's old and gorgeous. My friend Kei explained that she chose the venue before setting the date, and that was why her wedding was on a Tuesday. We had the whole place to ourselves, and the bride and groom took some lovely pictures by the doors before beginning the ceremony. The venue was just lovely, the church long and quiet, with seats arranged right up at the altar. Because we were a party of fifteen or so, we all sat within a few feet of the bride and groom. The church, majestic as it was, still allowed for a glowing sense of intimacy. Everyone in attendance was Japanese except for me and Matt B., and there was a native Japanese guide attached to the church who told us what to do at various junctures. The white, English-speaking priest performing the ceremony spoke enough Japanese to administer the vows, and he was very charming and unobtrusive about it. After the ceremony, we went outside to take pictures on the lawn. The backdrop was perfect, blue sky and striking architecture. It drizzled a tiny bit, but somehow it didn't make a difference. I can't comment on the ordinary Sunday uses of St. Andrew's Cathedral, but if I were getting married in Honolulu I'd check this place out. The wedding was beautiful, and though I suppose this should go without saying, the bride and groom seemed quite happy to be there. read more

At that time,I got to know this place and structure is loved by many hawaiian people. So we have to respect the culture and this histrical place ,structure. Now my wife's father has goon. A beautiful cathedral and a wonderful place to attend services. The Sunday service schedule is: 7:00 am Holy Eucharist 8:00 am Ka `Eukalikia Hemolele with the Hawaiian Choir 10:30 am Sung Eucharist with the Cathedral Choir 5:00 pm Changing Ringing of the Great Cathedral Bells 5:30 pm Choral Evensong The 7am service is a shorter service with very little singing. In the 8am service all of the songs and some of the readings are in the Hawaiian language. It's very spiritual and comforting to hear the Psalms chanted and the hymns sang in Hawaiian. The 10:30am is a tradition Episcopalian service with a full choir. All three service provide something different depending on what you are looking for. After the 8am service there are refreshments in the outdoor courtyard and everyone is very welcoming and friendly. I highly recommend St. Andrew for anyone looking for a church home. read more

I grew up in this church and have so many great memories in it. I went to the adjoining St. Andrew's Priory School For Girls (which will be my next review) and went to this church every Thursday for 6 years. We even had our graduation in this church. I eventually came back for regular services and even got married here. It's a really beautiful church with wonderful architecture, huge stained glass windows and a rich history behind it. If you have the chance, take the church tour that they do every week and learn about the drama behind the building of the church and all the little historical nuances. If you're into the church's Sunday services they have three services and one at 8 am that's in Hawaiian. If you love Christmas be sure to check out the Christmas pageant that the do on Christmas eve with the children of the congregation. My son was baby Jesus one year & the next year he was a lamb. ABC's "Lost" films a lot of their scenes at St. Andrew's so if you see giant trucks and trailers outside you'll know why. read more

I came here on a fluke because I was downtown and needed parking. Honestly, the free parking sign is what got my attention. But in the end, it didn't feel right to cheat a church so I paid for the public parking. Although it was slightly overcast, there was a wedding taking place and I thought to myself, what a gorgeous church to get married. St. Andrew's Cathedral has a rustic charm. I didn't get a chance to explore the inside, but the outside is beautiful with a fountain in the front. When I finished my errand, I saw a second bridal party emerge from the church. Apparently people like getting married here during the week days. The parking lot is reasonable (and takes credit card)-$8 for 2 hours or $15 for 4 hours. It is right across the street from the State Museum and not too far way from the Iolani Palace. read more

Before I moved back home after living away for 10 years, I searched on-line for a church. This one caught my eye because it was Episcopal, and also because of its deep connection to the history of Hawaii. When I arrived I also found a vibrant Christian community eager to serve each other and the community; with many classes and activities to choose from. The liturgy is beautiful and Christ centered, the music is profound. read more
