Marie has been involved in the medical field for many years. She witnessed and experienced the personal care her mother received in her final days. This inspired her to create and form a company that could provide care for the elderly. And by this I mean, "care at home". Home is where the heart is, and by this presentation it was evident that "Happier at Home" goes out of their way to work with their clients.To provide care and help so they can stay within their own homes if having tough times.. In the presentation she went through many of her companies services, and there are many. They do a "free" in-home assessment, approx. 45 minutes. But 1 of many things stood out to me. She made it clear that they go out of their way to keep the same caregiver, medical aide, on the same job for the family, patient. She compares the patients life style, habits to one of her aides backgrounds and training. All of her aides go through a training and certification program. Complete with a background and drug test. Aides, care givers, are taught about fall prevention, senior fraud, prevention,cooking, safety and house keeping. In the home assessment Marie will discuss the basic problem of the patient in need. The health challenge,medication compliance, memory concerns, and transportation. The patients nutritional needs,being isolated, home cleaning and maintenance, medical alert buttons, special phones for the hard of hearing. They offer meal planning and preparation, transportation service, shopping for the patient, house keeping, doing laundry. They also have aides for companionship and mental stimulation. The list goes on! Throughout the presentation Marie answered several questions by tenants one on one. She handed out flyers with information about her companies services and what they offer and how she governs and guides their business. She sponsored a "welcome wagon" with beverages and snacks for tenants and continued to answer questions by tenants. I was pleased that I attended this presentation and impressed with Marie Rodriguez. I think that "Happier at Home" is a well organized business. I wouldn't hesitate to call them!

Each driver has had to be insistently told to pull up to the house into the drive way and fight with us about driving up the 50ft driveway, expecting my mother to use a walker all the 50ft to reach the vehicle. Furthermore my mother saw bedbugs crawling on the seats of the car. Speaking with supervisors has done nothing but make them retaliate and treat us like crap.

We later found out she used my check for someone else in a whole different apartment complex as their security deposit. They sent me a 14 day eviction notice mid September dated two days after the date they actually placed it on my door stating I didn't pay rent when this was my very first time hearing the rent was lost after I gave them this money order in July. It took me weeks of calling Money gram and going to Walmart literally loosing hours at work just to be compensated dollars for my hours of doing research which should have been done on their end. I was told by RAE at the office that I would receive an apology letter upon me providing proof that I paid. After submitting all of the proof RAE tells me she doesn't give out apology letters that's not something she does. So you mean to tell me someone in the office basically steals my rent check after I dropped it off and verified them having it minutes after dropping it off because the office wasn't open just as of yet and you tell me I can't get an apology or even some real compensation? I emailed NPMA several times asking for help and assisted on this situation and no one ever got back to me however they did get my emails and forward them to RAE as if that was making the situation any better. When I asked why no one from NPMA has contacted me I was told for several months everyone in the office was on vacation. I was also told they were going to look into how they could compensate me more literally have heard nothing from anyone in regards to this still to this date. Also in the summer time there is a INSANE amount of insects every where. I also almost every single time have to call the office multiple times to get things done and the excuse if always "I just be running around you know there's so much going on " yet I'm expected to pay rent full and on time . I wouldn't recommend this place to my dogs. They talk a good game just to reel you in which make sense. Patients were forced out into the hall at 4:00 AM to wait and promised nothing would be missing. He is the only friend I know who can solve mathematical puzzles and delivered newspapers driving many parts of the city and suburbs for 26 years. His room mate was missing several shirts, The only item returned to my friend was some business papers pertaining to money for the Nursing Home. Meanwhile he is stripped of his personality as a whole. Employees are more concerned about their hours and the money they can get if they hurry through and get out. It is too much for them to do considerate things for the patient they ARE SUPPOSED TO BE serving. The PATIENTS ARE ACTUALLY PAYING THEM BUT AS IN MY FRIEND'S CASE INDIVIDUAL ALLOWANCES ARE NOT GIVEN, there is only medication and orders from a remote industry which is depersonalizing and does not see his point of view. I had a completely separate medical issue occur, and my doctor recommended I no longer go, so that's the only reason I stopped going for the time being. I do think the office could be a little cleaner. Sometimes I'd go in a room and the paper they lay down would still be there from the last patient. Everyone was always very friendly though, and the people at the front desk are also very nice. There's also a bathroom you can stop in to fix your hair on the way out, lol.

I spent quite a while checking all the chiropractors in the county. One name kept coming up Dr. Lange. After the study I shared it to my cousin who had been using a chiropractor for years and years. She told me how great her chiropractor was but unfortunately the doctor was moving. As a result of my study she was going to try Dr. Lange. I said to my cousin Great tell me all about it once you meet the doctor! My cousin called me almost immediately after her appointment. I said Liz tell me what happened how was it? My cousin had an interesting way of answering it she said 'You don't know what you don't know'. I said Liz what do you mean? My cousin told me She had a really great chiropractor in the past but Dr. Lange was so much better thus she's 'You don't know what you don't know'. Well it got my curiosity going. A year later I had a neck problem and I was going to try Dr. Lange. This doctor was not the first time I had seen a chiropractor I have seen two others in my life. What I can tell you is the doctor took care of my problem almost totally the first time I saw him. I would say roughly 80% of my neck problem was gone. I saw him again about 4 days later and after that I was totally taken care of. If you are ever looking for a chiropractor you should definitely try Dr. Lange.

How does it feel to have failed one's father, one's hero, the person who devoted his life to keeping you safe, to showing you that the most important part of life is your family? It is a gut-wrenching pain that can never be fixed. I have failed my father. I have allowed him to be spending his last days without dignity, unclean, mistreated, ignored, and regretting that he ever believed the words and promises of St. Ann's Community Center. Please take a close look at this photo of my father when he was about your age. Does he look impeccable? Can you identify with this? You look impeccable in your photos. He looks about your age. Now fast forward and picture what I write below as happening to you. Dying from Alzheimer's, he was recently moved from the Ranier Memory Center to Long Term Hospice in Webster. You helped facilitate that move for which I expressed my deep gratitude. After the abysmal care he received in the memory center, I felt confident that he was now in good hands. Visiting him this week I found that was far from true. Upon arriving late on Friday evening, I found him sitting in the living room area, in his recliner, at an uncomfortable angle, his right eye oozing pus, in front of a blaring USA network show about young girls who were brought into prostitution via massage parlors, where they were describing in lurid detail how they were touched by the clients. Sitting comfortably against the back wall behind my father were three CNAs totally engrossed in the show. When I said hello two could barely grunt a response. I asked if someone could please get a warm wet facecloth and clean my father's eye. Since my father wold never watch this type of TV, I then suggested a golf channel. They changed the channel and then scattered. My father told me 'You would not believe what goes on..." I proceeded to turn the volume down, turn off the fluorescent lights shining in his eyes, to adjust him in the chair, and watch him fall asleep. My mother, a resident relatively happy in the assisted living section, had complained to me recently that upon visiting my father on her daily schedule, she found him near the dining area slumped in his chair with a large, long, opaque drool from his mouth to his shirt. Because she suffers from Parkinson's, she is unable to do many things herself. She asked for help and was told in a very rude manner to wait. She did not wait, and confronted the CNA and demanded that he be cared for 'NOW'! She then observed that the other patients immediately looked timidly away. Later she was asked by one of them to 'please not rock the boat'. What does this say? To me it says volumes. These are patients without a voice. I received a subsequent phone call about the fact that my father happily scoots around helping and then tires and slumps in his chair to rest. And he likes this. I guess he likes the drool all over himself, too. Saturday morning I visited his room and found that once again, his clothes were dirty, smelly, and sloppily thrown, dirty, into the drawers (photos attached). He has expressed to my mother that 'Honey, I feel dirty.' This is a man who was always the best dressed, most impeccably groomed man I have ever met -- a man who could not stand to have anything disorganized or filthy. My mother has asked that his teeth be brushed. You can see from the photo here that they have not been cleaned in quite some time. I have also included for you (enclosed) the mouldy basket where his toothbrush was kept, along with one of the many filthy shirts found tossed in the drawer for another day's wear. I went into the closet and found that all of his clothes smelled dirty. He said to me 'Mom and I would never have come here if we had known. I thought this place was top of the line...' He needed to be taken to the bathroom several times that day. He was complaining of pain in his groin and had a terrible time communicating this. At one point in the afternoon, one CNA, Shifor (sp?) came in to help, removing her sunglasses only as she enter his room, mouthing 'Oh shit'. Much later that evening I received a text telling me that his discomfort was from '...urinary retention. Once his bladder was emptied via Foley catheter he had total relief...' his is a serious management problem AT THE TOP. Have you ever visited the patients, unannounced, put on some of those rubber gloves, and LOOKED IN THE ROOMS, the drawers, the bathrooms? Have you and your CEO ever monitored what is going on in the establishment where you sit at the top of the heap and collect the executive salaries and glory? Have you ever monitored the hiring practices to see that instead of the lowest common denominator you employ only people as CNAs and LPNs that respect the dying, who come from backgrounds where the elderly are valued, not uniformly discounted, who help the dying die with DIGNITY? I'm pretty sure they're trying to kill my Grandpa. He was supposed to stop taking a certain pill, but when my Grandma came to see him, she saw that they were still giving it to him. Also, when he pushed a button to call for someone to take him to the bathroom, nobody came, and he had an accident. Plus, there's a nurse that my Grandma calls Nurse Ratched. My mother-in-law lived at St. Ann's Home for the final years of her life as she suffered from dementia. We could not have asked for better care or a more kind and caring staff. " Great we thought! Mom moved in. 4 months later my mom was hospitalized and diagnosed with inoperable cancer. She returned to The Maplewood and we clarified with the social worker and staff- would mom need a hospice nurse? NO. Would she have to move rooms when she got close to dying?NO. "We provide palliative care. That's what we do." They reassured my frightened mom that - "You have a palliative team caring for you. We will make sure you're comfortable." 4/6 I get a call from the day nurse, mom who is battling her second bout of pneumonia in 4 weeks is "having a down day. and by the way she is too weak to hold the phone, but she'd like to talk to you, by the way she is confused and she won't take her pills and her antibiotics aren't working and her pneumonia is worse..." My mom decided in January to be a DNR, and she didn't want to go back to the hospital. I told the nurse I was coming (a 7 hour drive) she said good. It's Friday, my mom is dying I think as I drive. When I arrive at midnight my mom is breathing 35times a minute sounding like a washing machine. Her eyes are rolling in their sockets as she involuntarily opens and closes them. I ask her how she is doing and she says "I ache all over". The night nurse enters the room, I tell her my mom's airway needs suctioned and mom needs pain meds. The nurse says to me (a 25 year ICU RN) "Your mom doesn't need to be suctioned and she can't have any pain meds." I said my mom is dying what do you mean she can't have pain meds? I'll stop right here. It only gets worse. The fact is the day nurse, the evening nurse and the social worker all knew my mom had taken a turn and not a one of them thought to tell the doctor or pa. A doctor or pa could have assessed the situation and recognized she was in multisystem organ failure and dying. They then could have modified her care plan and added medications that would maximize comfort. The nurses and social worker with their educational backgrounds should have done something to make sure her palliative needs would be met! It was Friday, they went home. The Maplewood promised my mom comfort care in the end. Her first appropriate end of life pain med was finally was obtained at 0540. She suffered until God finally took her at 0645. No end of life medications were ordered until 530am despite the day nurse and social worker knowing she was declining. How does this happen? They told her over and over that they would take care of her when she was dying! It was her biggest fear. We believed them. We were happy to pay $20,000 out of pocket a month for such inclusive services! Beware!!! They, the staff, smile a lot and sound so reassuring but YOU don't be fooled. If the end is near insist on seeing the care plan. Insist on seeing the med list. Please please educate yourself about end of life care (palliative and hospice). Pain meds, nausea meds, anxiety meds, meds for excessive secretions should all be ordered and a available as needed for a dying DNR patient. These are all meds that maximize comfort. I assumed they took care of this for mom. Friday night at midnight is no time to be begging for comfort care medications. Heaven help the residents who don't have a voice due to dementia, Alzheimer's etc.or don't have an advocate when they are dying. Update:12/14/2018 change is on the way. After extensive investigation, the New York State Department of Health CITED The Maplewood for NOT providing (my mom) adequate Palliative Care. The "last hours" can be as good as the first seven months!

My trust and appreciation for everyone grew as the years rolled by. I can't say enough good today ( one week after Mom passed away) about my interactions with everyone there. I was in the facility hundreds of times as the initial diagnosis of 6 months to live stretched into 50 plus months ! I can't help but wonder if the professional employees/ caring staff had something to do with her persevering through strokes , COVID , Parkinson's & more. Thank you for all the support , hugs , laughs and tears at the end. The Oswald family and I will never forget the love , care & help provided by Aaron Manor for the entirety of Moms stay . May the " only true God " bless and support you guys in the future. I highly recommend this facility, these services and staff to anyone in a situation like ours. We put a call into the director.....He also didn't respond. 5 people tried to tell their loved ones goodbye as she died alone with nobody there and it all fell on deaf ears. I find this behavior from the social worker all the way up to the director extremely troubled and this family deserved and explanation. Period. This is after also calling U of R ortho in Webster (phone lines had an hour+ wait). Then over to WellNow (doesn't do imaging) and finally to UR Urgent Care on Empire who was open and does do imaging. We were hoping to transition to a great healthcare team since our daughters have very sensitive lungs, which sometimes requires us to go to the ER. I called late one night because my daughter seemed to be having respiratory distress and Dr. Goldberg advised us to go to the ER after I explained the symptoms. It was the right call and my daughter got the care she needed that night. Dr. Goldberg is a kind and attentive doctor, who remembers small details from past conversations and she never seems rushed! She's adjusted some medicines to better suit our daughters for the winter season as well. The staff on the phone and front desk is always friendly. They greet our daughters and give them stickers. The office is clean and well-maintained, and the parking is always plentiful. My husband was initially confused why I drove a little farther out to go to Pittsford for this doctor. I explained that I saw good reviews and that I had a great first experience with Dr. Goldberg. He said it still might be a better idea to go somewhere closer but I was already invested. Today my husband joined along and I asked him what his impression was, and he said, "The doctor seemed really nice and professional, and it's really clean and nice inside, I can see why you like it." My husband will be doing his PhD for the next 5 years in Rochester so we plan to be with Dr. Goldberg for these upcoming years! My daughters are healthy during spring, summer and fall but flu season is rough so it's important to me we go somewhere we feel welcomed and taken care of!
