His diligent tracking of the additional days required for her stay ensured she could safely transfer from her bed to a wheelchair with the assistance of only one CNA. When our mother arrived a month ago, she was unable to stand or walk, and her progress has been remarkable. We were also very impressed by the medical care meeting provided for our family. It was well-organized, with up-to-date lab work and clear documentation that allowed us to easily understand her medical progress. Additionally, social workers Elvie and Ana, along with Bianca, Alejandra, and Renee from administration, were outstanding resources. They kept our family consistently informed and made the discharge process seamless. The facility is extremely busy, and nurses are frequently checking in on patients. Rooms are shared (two patients per room) and include a private bathroom, a TV for each bed, and a dresser. The facility itself is clean, though the nursing staff often seemed short-handed. During especially busy times, it was not unusual to wait 5-15 minutes for a response after pressing the call button. Physical therapy was provided once or twice per day in short sessions. Some drawbacks included physicians making care decisions without always coming to check in directly with the patient, as well as occasional miscommunication regarding medications. While some staff members appeared more short-tempered than others, the majority were friendly, attentive, and patient. We also experienced some issues with laundry, clothing went missing, and at times other patients' clothes were mistakenly given to our family member. Overall, we are grateful for the care received, but there is clear room for improvement, particularly with staff-to-patient ratios to help reduce call-button wait times and improve overall communication.

Once they got me there they put me in a diaper! After putting up with this for several days I threatened to require transfer to another care center. Then they promised to get a commode for me for my bedside. They kept promising and promising, and never did it for the 6+ weeks I was there! In addition, the first space I was assigned had a TV that would only turn off if you unplugged it. Also, their TV channels did not include KTLA, a major local channel. Hygiene was also an issue. The curtain between me and my neighbor had smear of snot or other bodily fluids on it. It took more than a week for them to change it. Later on I had a chest infection and I got some fluid on the new curtain. When I told the cleaning crew, all they did was rehang the same curtain with the side toward my neighbor (who was there for cancer treatment)! There was also a security issue. One male resident, who apparently had some form of dementia, kept wandering the halls and entering my space, claiming he was visiting a friend (no males were in my unit, and the other resident also did not want him in our unit). I told the staff and they cautioned him ("you don't want to go back to the hospital (mental?), do you?"), but he continued to poke his head into my unit. I observed them lying to residents. They took away my neighbor's wheelchair because they didn't want her wandering unaccompanied in the halls, but told her they didn't know what happened to it. They promised physical therapy four times a week but I never received more than 10 to 15 minutes two or three times a week, and when I asked for more they said staff were unavailable.

Within 5 minutes multiple nurses came out and eventually took responsibility. The cops and ambulance showed up at the scene but no one advocated for her due to language barriers and age. How did this person get out with a wheelchair? She couldn't walk or get up? Doesn't speak any English. If a family member sees this we are willing to share what we saw. Sorry we didn't know what to do.

Much to my huge relief, my parents are genuinely happy and thriving in their new community. They even participate in two standing dinners each week with their new friends! It's no exaggeration that there is truly something for everyone with lots of fun activities, special events, excursions, and many opportunities for residents to interact. There is never a dull moment, and every holiday is celebrated with much fanfare. My quiet, introverted mother has blossomed into a quasi-social butterfly. She can't stop talking about the friendly new people she's met. As a nature lover, she loves her evening walks in the beautifully landscaped grounds. My father enjoys his daily visit to the mailroom and loves chatting with Olga at the front desk who never seems to have a bad day. He's a regular at the gym. He enjoys reading each page of the Weekly Happenings and Monthly Monitor. Both parents love using Morningside's app to review the daily menu before heading down to the restaurant for their meals. The wine offerings are impressive and prices very reasonable! They did notice a slight decline in the food quality/menu options throughout the year, but they said things are starting to improve with the new chef and the switch to a new seafood supplier. The app is easy to navigate and makes entering maintenance/work orders/staff feedback a breeze. Whoever designed the app did a great job because the user-interface is smooth and very intuitive. This is a huge compliment since my parents aren't native English speakers! ;-) A friend from one of their standing dinners is transitioning from independent living to memory care later this month. The group plans to invite him to their weekly dinners as much as possible if/when their meal credits allow. I'm sure Morningside will handle the move with the utmost care and compassion. You can be sure I'll be watching to see how the transition goes and will report back next year. TLDR: If you can figure out a way to make it work, don't hesitate to make the move to Morningside. I'm so happy my parents picked Morningside and wish they hadn't waited so long to make the move!
