Twice I have called to book an eye appointment, and twice I took off work, showed up only to be told they had not booked enough time so the appointment was cancelled and would have to be rebooked. It took over a month for my contacts to arrive, and the prescription was off, so I could not read. When I called, I was told the doctor had moved to another location, so they could not handle it. St Charles Vision is now My Eye Doctor. First I only went for glasses. I had been going for years but I will never step in there again. I went to get my glasses a woman says come to end of counter as I needed to see if was right on my ears. I said I need to sit. She didn't come from behind the counter she had a very nice man come. I questioned why did you all not follow the prescription from Dr. as they didn't add reading part to the glasses. I was upset. I was in the process of buying reading glasses. Woman across the room slams her hand on counter says what's the problem. I was about to buy the glasses. She was so rude I said never mind to the man I left the reading glasses. I told man I wasn't upset with him. I will never be back in there ever. She also hadn't credited me for another pair of glasses they couldn't get until weeks later and was when I went in. I see i am not the only one who has had problems with SCV My issue is mostly my fault but i wanted to warn others against shopping here before without checking frame prices I bought a pair of Rayban Rx glasses. I liked the frames and insurance covered some of the cost so i splurged. the frames were $280. I found out a couple days later that you could buy the same frames on the Ray Ban retail website for $100 cheaper! I called them to nicely ask about this big discrepency. The employee rudely told me they dont have any control over that and when i asked for the manager she stonewalled me. Chalk it up to experience but I will never go back. Terrible customer service. I visited two times for a medical eye issue. The follow-up visit was twice as expensive as the initial exam, even though the exact same procedures were performed. The staff behind the desk were unhelpful did not explain why it was more, citing doctor coding and nothing they can do. I would not come back. Hooray! I can read street signs again! Thanks St. Charles Vision for restoring my sight to, comparatively, superhuman levels with these spectacular (pun intended!) new glasses! Everybody here was super nice, and Val was awesome for spending so much time helping me find frames I actually liked. (Apparently styles have changed somewhat in the 10-12 years since the last time I visited the eye doctor. Also, I am not stylish. The new, hip eyewear that's available simply does not work for me. Give me last decade's styles, please.) My favorite part was the fact that the doctor actually agreed NOT to do the horrible numb-your-eye-and-stab-it-with-a-pokey-thing test because I whined about it. Really didn't expect that to work, and am quite glad it did. Also, they totally looked up my insurance for me, because I couldn't find my card and had no idea who the policy was through, but they magically found it for me with nothing more than my name! And employer, maybe. I don't know. But it rocked because I was able to avoid spending far more money than I actually had to. So maybe that was my favorite part. Hard to say. They had the decency to forward the results of my eye exam to their referred opthamologist. That is the best that I can say. I was referred to this location by my own optamologist last summer 2019. My appointment to see an opthamologist was set three months out in November 2019, By then the - company?- had changed hands and is now 'My Eye Doctor'. I had rescheduled my appointment of November because it conflicted with a new job. I went for an eye exam on January 6 while taking unpaid time off from my new job. The receptionist was not only snippy for my 4PM appointment on January 6, she was also wrong. She had expected that I was going to use my vision insurance for the appointment but my Optometrist had made an appointment for me to have a pre-surgery exam for the removal of a cataract and that falls under medical coverage which is different from vision coverage. I clarified this with her and she asked for my insurance card which was in my mailbox (believe me or not, that is a fact and I told her that I could show her an image of the envelope that was delivered the very same day). She said that without the card with the ID# she could not look it up and that she could take my payment for the exam and then when I presented my insurance card later she could put a claim in for me. I asked her what the exam would cost and she said that the vision exam that fell under Optometry would be such and such amount but that the exam that fell under Opthamology would be, basically, anybody's guess. I said to her that that was all that I wanted to know. She told me to take a seat. I looked around at people who were sitting down trying on eyeglasses. I asked her if she meant to just sit among them and she indicated a bench by the entrance and suggested that I help myself to some beverages nearby. Once I was invited into the exam room I was told that a machine was to replace the need for dilating my pupils and that it would cost an additional $30 or so. I explained that I had discussed with the gal in reception that this would all be paid today and that they all would bill my insurer once I presented my ID#. She left the room to confer with the receptionist and returned to say that they can't do that but that I can do so myself. We proceeded with that machine. The Doctor later entered and introduced himself. I figured that he was the surgeon for matters like cataracts since this was the reason that I had this appointment in the first place. He decided to dilate my pupils even though I had agreed to pay for the machine but he said that he wouldn't charge me for the machine and he didn't. After all was said and done, I paid for an exam with an Optometrist who had repeated the exact same exam that my original Optometrist had done and was the reason for my having been referred to St Charles Vision. He asked me to forward to him the Opthamologists that were in my insurer's network and he made some recommendations, which is good but also redundant since my original optometrist had recommended St Charles Vision in the first place only apparently St Charles Vision no longer performs cataract surgery since it is now MyEyeDoctor. Nobody told me... I called one of the offices to which I had been referred and was told that even though I had paid for an exam in August 2019 which was repeated a week ago at this location, I would have to repeat it yet again even though they were in receipt of the results of the exam that I had just a week ago. I took time off from work two times in a week and paid for duplicate exams in the past 6 months over the course of a week. My insurance isn't going to go along with all of the changes and confusion due to the fact that St Charles Vision is no longer in the business of surgery for cataracts and as a patient I merely do what I am told. I am not the expert. I do find however that I am the one out of pocket as a result of all of any changes and confusion. Most of all, the gal who greeted me at the reception desk for my 4PM appointment on 1/6 took on an attitude with me when I told her that this was not an appointment that fell under vision coverage and that it fell under medical coverage. It's not so much that she was confused. If she was then she could have excused herself while seeking advice. Instead she looked down her nose at me and made demands on me to produce my proof of coverage, to which I replied that I could prove that it was in my mailbox (the ID card) by showing her a picture of the envelope from USPS but that I was now here and it was sitting in my mailbox. She said that she couldn't look me up without the card but that once I produced the card later they could make the claim and in the interim I would have to pay for the appointment. That was misleading and inaccurate and her attitude just took the cake. read more

I've never worn glasses, but I've reached the age where eye wear is becoming a necessity. And thus begins my saga... I saw an ophthalmologist and he wrote me a prescription which I brought to St. Charles Vision The woman who helped me pick my glasses was really nice, stayed within my price point and helped me find cute frames. The lens were OMG expensive, but my friends who have worn glasses for years said that the price was within acceptable limits. Then I picked up my glasses and they made me nauseous and my computer screen was blurry...so back I went. They were really nice and the tech said that she thought my prescription must be wrong by my description. For no additional charge, they retested my eyes. Gave me a new prescription. I ordered new lenses (same frames). When I picked those up, they weren't what the optometrist and I had discussed so I left them with the staff. There seemed to have been a data entry-type error when they were ordered. The next day the store manager (Chris who is great) called and I went back in for a few measurements and we ordered a 3rd set of lenses. And yesterday, low and behold I have glasses. While getting the glasses right took awhile, the staff was really helpful and friendly and I paid no additional charges after the initial one. Let's hope for fewer headaches and a greater ability to read comic books. read more

Seriously the best selection of cool frames I have found in the city. I am currently on my 3rd pair of glasses (another symptom of ole-lady-itis) from St. Charles vision. Every time I go here the staff is very nice. I can usually get an appointment on the day that I want it. They have my glasses ready in a week. AND, I can stop by anytime to get them adjusted for FREE. Sure, they are a little pricey, but you get what you pay for, and I think this place is worth the price. The ladies behind the counter have been super sweet to me and my partner even remembering that we got married last October, after we came to get her new frames just before the ceremony. I bought a new pair of glasses just after Mardi Gras 2018. I'm getting super old, so I had to get progressive lens. Stop laughing! Anyway, I got these really nice wire frame glasses with rounds lenses. They were like the glasses that John Lennon wore. A few weeks ago part of the frame started breaking away from the metal. I went in to see what could be done about it. Kim helped me. She was wonderful. It ended up that it was a defect. Unfortunately, the frames were discontinued, so I had to pick a different frame. I chose a plastic frame with more rectangular lenses (sorry John). The best part was there was absolutely no charge. Thanks Kim! Now that's how you do business. read more

I've been going to St. Charles Vision for some time now to take care of these ol' peepers my parents graced me with. The fact that I'm horrible at taking my contacts out and blind as a bat (bats can probably see better than me), makes me a wonderful candidate for eye issues and updated prescriptions. The techs are always super sweet, and don't leave me hanging around blind for too long. I've been seeing Dr. Lappen on my last couple of visits, and he answers all my ridiculous questions. I know that I'm not "legally blind", I shoooould probably take out my contacts once in a blue moon, at least, and my eyes are not perfectly shaped like cue balls (and that's okay). I haven't bought glasses from this location in a long time. I bought an expensive pair quite a while ago, and after my sweet sweet puppy ate the temples off of them, I needed to get them replaced. There was a bit of a snafu when the temples finally came in and they were the wrong color, but I was told because of issues they had had with this company they were no longer going to carry them. Either way I'll be more than happy to update my review when I get fresh on that four-eyed game! read more

When I first moved here I got an eye infection that left my eye permanently blurred. I was recommended to St. Charles vision because they were open and could take my appointment. I had already seen another doctor, but because this was so serious I had to see another one the next day, and of course it was labor day and the last place was closed. Therefore, I am thankful St. Charles Vision was open, but the service they provided left me feeling straight up awful. When I saw the Dr Lappen he addressed the problem and gave me directions on how to get the medicine since it was hard to get, but that was the only good thing he did. The entire time he talked to me like this infection was my fault and that I should feel bad for getting it (as if I wasn't already walking around blind and crying in one eye). He was not sympathetic or empathetic at all, and at the end of the session he just told me to go to a new doctor anyway. Against my better judgment I did return to St. Charles Vision because the hospital had a wait of 3 hours and wasn't open when I was off work. This time when I saw Dr. Lappen, he charged me $50 to talk down to me and tell me that he couldn't do anything and that I'd have to go back to the hospital. read more

I just bought my glasses from here. The lenses get smudges on them which require a lot of cleaning. I only use the cloth I was given to wipe them. I think they messed up the coating that they put on the lenses. When I go to the store to complain about this issue, they argue with me instead of fixing it. They flat out don't do returns. They say they'll fix any problem you have, but instead of fixing it, they argue. The new management of MyEyeDr has really changed the tone of what used to be St Charles Vision. read more

I have had it with this place!!! My 18 year old daughter kept making appointments because her eyes have problems. Last visit someone charged her full price for a visit because they needed a prior approval from my insurance. My Insurance does not require one, and their records would have shown that from the previous visit. She paid full price for that visit, and I called later and had a fit. The person on the phone admitted that the other person was too busy too check my insurance or the records at the time and made my daughter pay out of pocket. They took advantage of an 18 year old!!! Fast forward to today. My daughter called me, and I went there while the incompetent buffoon was charging her money for no reason. I called my insurance while I was in the store, and they walked the buffoon through the transaction. I didn't have to pay anything. They now owe me money. I can't wait to see how long it takes for me to get my refund. People, stop supporting this place! They can't resolve her eye problems, the customer service sucks, and they are too lazy to check records. I'll be happy to tell y'all how long my refund takes! I have been wearing glasses my entire life and this is the worst experience I have ever had. They sold me sunglasses I couldn't see with. It was like a fish bowl and they were falling off my face because the lens was so big and heavy. They should have known these wouldn't work with my prescription. They tried a new pair. The same thing happened. They tried to tell me I shouldn't have gotten a prescription because I was pregnant and that was the reason I couldn't see out of the lenses. I had to fight for my money back for the sunglasses. I ordered glasses at the same time that I've been stuck with. The lens keeps falling out of the frame. I'm constantly having them fixed because they made the lens wrong. After they broke while I was driving I finally had to replace them out of pocket. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY. This is the worst customer service I have encountered. I cannot believe they sell such expensive glasses and don't know what they're doing. In the middle of the night I woke up screaming in pain. I wasn't about to go to the emergency room so I went to St. Charles Vision as soon as it opened.They got me into a room so quick and pain drops in my eye almost immediately. The doctor was so nice and knowledgeable. Turns out I had a corneal abrasion. Doc patched me up with a contact and got me an appointment the following week to take it out. Could be awkward and uncomfortable having a stranger place and remove a contact from your eye but both doctors I saw made it as easy as possible. Best thing - my "emergency" visit was only $60 (including the contact and meds I got) and the follow up was $20 AND I don't have eye insurance. read more

Yep, I contracted a stye at the optometrist. I really REALLY wanted to like this place as I'm in need of a yearly "check up" and prescription for my contacts and eyeglasses. I've been to several other local optometrists (the Scientologist, the basement eye doctor, Walmart) and haven't yet found my match. This one seemed modern, clean and professional, and as I'm willing to pay a bit more for quality and convenience, I thought I would give it a try. What a mistake. I arrived on time for my mid-day appointment, and after filling out the new patient paperwork, sat and waited, and waited, for 30-40 minutes of my business day, until being invited into an exam room. Number one mark of an unprofessional office is the inability to keep timely appointments. While the doctor was "lunching" upstairs, or whatever. Finally the doctor arrives and rushes through an unbelievably fast and perfunctory exam, during which I'm instructed to lean my head back for those awful yellow eye drops. Doctor places the dropper tip on the inside edge of my eyelid, where I develop a painful stye about 30 hours later. This I'm sure is a shared container of drops, and the applicator tip has contacted who knows how many eyes. I believe that the lax sanitation and rushed demeanor of this particular "doctor" were responsible for a literal eyesore that lasted 4-5 days. Totally unacceptable. read more

Terrible experience. Went here with vision insurance and simply wanted to get contacts. Expected to pay a $30 co-pay only. Ended up paying over $114 for just 90 days worth of contacts. Was charged a $60 "contact lens fitting" which was simply me putting the contacts in and the docter asking "do they feel okay?" The doctor was rushing in and out so fast that he asked me the same question 3 times not even realizing. I'm going to call my insurance company because this place is a scam! Don't go here. The plastic "wire" holding a lens in my glasses broke and I really needed to get them fixed. I found this place on Yelp and thought I'd give it a try. They were nice, friendly and offered to fix my glasses for ten bucks while I waited. It took a lot longer than they expected as my glasses were playing difficult, but they fixed them with a smile and still charged me just ten bucks. What can I say other than 5 stars:) read more

The last time I purchased glasses I bought them here and was very happy. Yesterday around 1:15 I went into the store to look at sunglasses. There was only one other customer. My boyfriend and I were there for 10 minutes looking at glasses and not a single employee took the time to greet us or even say they would be with us in a minute. I saw a doctor here in April 2019 and the receptionist charged me $165 rather than my copay. I've been waiting for my reimbursement for months. I've been to some places where the superb customer service stops if it turns out you can't make a purchase. Not so at St. Charles Vision! I came here with my glasses prescription, not realizing that they are considered an out of network provider for my particular vision insurance. The staff was friendly, attentive, efficient, and helped me choose flattering, stylish frames. When I wasn't sure about my vision insurance, they helped me figure out what network I was in, and when it turned out that they were out-of-network for me, they were perfectly kind and understanding, and even made helpful suggestions for in-network stores. And then I accidentally left my glasses prescription on the table, and the woman who had helped me came running through the parking lot with it. Loved my first pair of glasses from this store. The following year went in for yearly exam and purchased a pair of Alain Mikli frames with the new rx. I couldn't see a thing with the new pair on! I made the drive back downtown to the shop to have the glasses checked to only be told that I need to wear them daily so my eyes could adjust to the new rx. They totally ignored my concerns after shelling out some $400+ the insurance didn't cover. Well yesterday I had my yearly exam performed at a different optometrist. When they tested my vision with the glasses from here my right vision was 20/80 with the freaking glasses. I guess the moral of the story is never let someone tell you what is right for you when you know it is wrong...... :-( read more

Horrible experience. My wife has purchased 3 pairs of chanel frames here and I have purchased two pairs (one Oliver Peoples and one Kawasaki) and have had problems with 60% of our purchases from St. Charles Vision. However it is the most recent visit that will insure that we will never return. My wife had a pair of Chanel frames that literally broke (sheared cleanly) when she was taking them out of the case. They broke straight across the narrowest part of the nose bridge. The glasses are one year and two weeks old. Over the phone, we were told to bring them in and they could get them repaired under warranty. We live downtown, so getting there is a hike, espeically during rush hour. After arriving, my wife was told that they could not be covered under warranty and that it would cost another $360 to repair the front of them (and that was giving us a big discount due to the fact that we have bought so many pairs of glasses there) - Talk about a bait and switch. Fortunately, my wife was smart enough to walk out. I called Chanel's customer service 800 number immediately and they were appalled. They gave me the name of their warranty company and the process to return them and have them repaired (or most likely replaced) under warranty. The only charge is $12.50 for the return shipping. Chanel customer service told me that it was completely improper for the store to try to charge anything and repair them themselves. They have a national warranty company called Luxottica who handles all of thier repairs. She was going to escalate this today with Chanel and would be contacting St. Charles Vision for the poor way in which they handled this. As the Chanel customer service rep said, "We are a luxury brand and value our customers... I will do whatever it takes to correct this for you..." Clearly this was a ploy to get another $360 from us - not a good way to treat long term customers. Unfortunately the next closest Chanel frames dealer is in Baton Rouge, so I will be buying my glasses from there now. I will never return to St. Charles Vision. Nice frame selection (best in the city), but with such an awful experience I can never walk in there again. Additionally, my wife's other two pair are fine, but both my Oliver Peoples and Kawasaki frames did not last very long. The Oliver Peoples made it two years before breaking and the Kawasaki's developed a film where the coating was literally coming off the lenses. I wear contacts 90% of the time, so for these to go bad so quickly given that I wear them only at night when I am home watching TV after I have taken my contacts out, I would say that thier quality would rank as poor in my book. Nice location uptown, nice selection of frames, horrible service, bad lens issues, and the worst bait and switch that I have seen in years with my wife's Chanel frames. Not a place that I will ever shop at again... I would suggest going elsewhere, as in my case they did not stand behind thier product. Chanel, on the other hand went above and beyond to help when I called thier 800 number and I will remain brand loyal to Chanel. I will just have to buy my products elsewhere (lenscrafters in Baton Rouge at the Mall of Louisiana is the closest dealer to New Orleans). I am sure that they will welcome our business moving forward. read more

First time patient, arrived early, seen early! Staff friendly and helpful. I was thrown off briefly by the $69 lens fitting charge for my contacts as I didn't know there would be a fee for that on top of the overall exam price that was billed to my insurance but it is what it is! I was there for contacts and they didn't try to "sell me" on glasses along with it, so I suppose that's good for me, But perhaps a missed opportunity on their end. Overall, I see no reason not to return next year for more contacts! read more

I went to St. Charles Vision for an eye exam and contact fitting. When I called and talked to a receptionist, I asked for an appointment with an ophthalmologist. She said, "OK", but when I got to my appointment the same person said that they only have optometrists. I kept the appointment, even though I am suppose to see an opthalmologist every year for my diabetes. When I told this to the receptionist, she said that an ophthalmologist and an optometrist are the same thing. I chose not to argue with her. I liked the optometrist that I saw, but when I went back for a second fitting, I saw someone else who didn't introduce themselves and proceeded to stick her fingers in my eyes without washing her hands. She also told me that I would have to give up either seeing well far away or close up. The optometrist that I originally saw said that he could get me seeing better than with glasses. I had used up my insurance, so I paid out of pocket to go to a good place. read more

I went back a week later on Monday. Lenses were made wrong, had to remake. Promised they would be ready today, Friday of same week. I just got off the phone - lenses were not ordered!!!! Needless to say, I give up. Canceled the order, getting my $$$$$ back and going back to Walmart for better service that costs $. I have been going to St. Charles Vision for a few years now and always have a good experience. The people are always friendly and I feel confident with the doctors and staff. Recently I had an eye infection and went to urgent care, spent $130, then went to St. Charles Vision and discovered the urgent care doctor had completely misdiagnosed it (all the while being very condescending to me during my visit). The doctor at St. Charles Vision was not only very nice, but knew immediately what was wrong with my eye and treated me appropriately. And the cost was half what the urgent care cost. read more

Yes, I got sucked into the fine looking Gucci glasses, No, I didn't need them, but I must say I look real good in them. Yes, the place is kind of expensive, but the glasses are fine. They have frames there that hardly anyone else in the city has and the lenses look so good. They are super thin and I love them. This place saved me from the hell at another optical place and I spent a little less than the competitor. I think you get what you pay for, so if you want to be in style, you have to pay the price.
