We were given a 2 hour Fajita and margarita cruise certificate from groupon for Christmas from my cousin. I went to book this and nowhere on the groupon does it say only valid on Tuesday and Wednesdays and nowhere does it say there will be an additional $9.65 of charges added once you make your reservation. When I print out the reservation it now says 2 for 1 margaritas, I contact Groupon and they say it includes one free margarita, Doubtful once we get on the boat that will be true but we will see. These are the extra fee's they will charge you: Port fee - $1.50 Service charge on food service - $4.40 Fuel Surcharge - $0.75 Minnesota food tax - $2.21 Fees - No explanation I would be embarrassed if I gave a gift to 2 people that cost them an extra $19.30 out of their pocket. We tried the Fajita and Margarita cruise and liked it for the most part. The downside was, we did it on a cold, rainy night in October so there wasn't much of a view and it got dark halfway through the cruise -so then there was no view! Of course, this was not the fault of the business. Just something to keep in mind when you book. There is no dedicated parking for this business, so you just fine what you can nearby. You might end up quite a ways away, so be prepared to walk. Check in was quick and simple. Unlike other similar cruises I've been on, they assign you to a table. Tables seat 6-8 so if you are a couple, you will likely be sharing a table with others. The interior of the boat is very pretty. Lots of big windows and mirrors surfaces, so wherever you are seated, you're aware of the outdoor views. There are 2 enclosed levels and the 3rd level is open. The bar is in the 2nd level and the food buffet is on the first level. Part of the deal for this cruise was 2-for-1 margaritas. We gave that a shot but weren't too impressed so switched to beer and wine. There is a limited selection of both. I'm not sure if there were other drink options. It's a small bar. They do have table service for drinks and those people really move! You want have to wait long for a drink. They're very friendly and attentive. Note: The bar does not take credit cards. Bring cash with you. The fajita buffet was good but nothing special. Chicken, carnitas, beans, rice. Some chips and salsa also, but the chips were stale. Overall, it was good and we would probably do it again in nice weather since the views on the St. Croix are really what you're there for. read more

Before purchasing our Italian dinner cruise tickets for the St. Croix River Cruise, we didn't check the Yelp reviews. When I took a peek at a later date as our trip approached, I became nervous due to the high number of negative experiences. There wasn't anything we could do at that point except go along with our dinner plans so I decided to hope for the best. Perhaps the dinner benefited from the fact that we were delirious from lack of sleep after our red-eye flight from San Diego to Minneapolis was grounded in Salt Lake City for five hours and we hadn't slept in almost 36 hours. Or maybe it was because we hadn't eaten a full, official meal in more than 24 hours but our experience wasn't nearly as awful as many of these reviews suggested. For the Italian dinner cruise, we were served a buffet of caesar salad, antipasti, bread, red sauce pasta, lasagna and chicken alfredo parmesan. The food wasn't amazing but it was perfectly fine for a buffet. The lasagna was, by far, my favorite dish. I had high hopes for the chicken alfredo parmesan but it seemed like the sauce had practically evaporated and it took me until my second go-round to realize the dish even had a sauce. It has a lot of potential but didn't quite live up to it. The plain pasta dish was too bland for my taste and the bread would have been better as a garlic bread. However, the carrot cake for dessert was delicious and I definitely left the boat feeling full. We dined on the last weekend that the boat was in service in October so it was far too chilly for my San Diego skin to venture outside on the deck. One of my favorite exchanges occurred as we were boarding the boat and I walked up the dock with my arms wrapped around myself and my teeth chattering. The dock worker laughed and said, "It's not that cold out!" I replied, "I'm from San Diego," and he said, "Oh, I understand." I do not have Minnesota blood and the 50s are not an acceptable temperature range for me. :) The sun set as we were boarding so there wasn't much to see out on the water. I think the boat cruise would be better earlier in the season when there's more light to see the sights and the temperature is warmer. read more

First Haakon was the best cruise attendant, his service and explanation of the evening allowed my fear of the water to subside. The fajitas and margaritas were amazing. The food is served buffet and is delicious. This was more than just a surprise date night for me and it was more than just a boat ride on the water. i purchased four tickets to this evening adventure that was to include dinner and two margarita drinks per person while sailing down the St. Croix. I took my recently engaged daughter and her future mother-in-law and fiance'. The experience was less than wonderful. First of all i sat at a table with other Groupon purchasers and we all thought we were getting two drinks with our meal. I was even very clear when I called the front desk about how much cash i should bring to purchase additional drinks as i was told they only take cash and that the first two BOGO are free. I then asked how much drinks would be i was told between 4-8 dollars a piece. We got a server that seemed to either have a bad medical condition or totally drunk. She told us it was her fourth day on the job she had no answers for our questions. Did not know even the basic wines and when she came back to collect money for our two mararitas and two glasses of wine. The ritas were 8.75 and our wines were 7.00 a piece. Three of us pulled out money to pay and attempted to give her 60.00 she seemed oh so confused. WE pulled the money back immediately as she stated she could not do the math. So we all scrounged for smaller bills so that she would not have to make any change and just leave the table. We decided from that point on we would just walk to the bar to get our drinks one at a time from somebody else. The boat was old and not very nice. The bathrooms were on the dirty side. The food was below average. And also the steps on the back of the boat had no lighting which is a huge safety concern. where to begin...first, we had no idea we booked a cruise on the "little boat" and not the grand duchess, so we were disappointed when we were told to head to the small vessel. the crew seemed pretty rough around the edges. we left the dock late and returned to the dock early. the boat has seen better days, it's generally unclean and kind of gross. however, i think my main complaint would be the food. it was simply awful. i wasn't expecting a Michelin rated experience, but the buffet was especially terrible, and i question the sanitation protocols. my family made a fun time of it, but i would never do this again, nor would i recommend it. im giving two stars instead of one because i felt sorry for the staff. are you guys ok? read more

The cruise down the St. Croix River was great except where I wanted to be was the FREAKIN SMOKING SECTION! WTF? I loved being outdoors on the deck but have to stay out of the sun (I sunburn easy). So the back of the second deck had a lovely awning over it-which is where I would have stayed the entire time but smokers were lighting up even before we cast off. How annoying. Yuck! Loved the cruise, did not love the food. We went on the Father's Day brunch cruise this past Sunday and the view from the boat and the ride itself were fantastic. The brunch buffet, on the other hand, left a little to be desired. For starters, there is only one buffet line so it takes a long time to get through. By the time you reach the food, the selection is minimal and most of the food is bland. The buffet included cheese and crackers; fruit, pasta salads, runny eggs; pancakes stuffed with apples, fish, chicken and roast beef. The best thing about the buffet was the pancakes. We booked the Afton Princess for a small alumni event. Georgene was amazing and incredibly responsive during our email communication. She worked very hard to make sure that all of our needs were meet and that nothing was missing throughout the entire process. We settle on the fajita buffet with a sponsored drink token option for our guests with cash bar to follow. The experience on the boat was fantastic and we could not have asked for a more perfect Minnesota evening. After a crazy thunderstorm all day, the clouds cleared, temps cooled off and we all enjoyed the sunset from the upper deck of the boat. The food was perfect, warm and tasty! Plenty of drink options for the finicky. The crew was very friendly, attentive and fun! We took the whole family and some friends out on the river for my mother's 60th bday. The cruise went very well. We love the St. Criox so it was a no brainer! What a disaster! Never again!! I bought my ticket on Groupon, and however much I paid - it was too much. Here's the short story: The boat is tired and needs to be overhauled. The paint is chipping, nearly everything is in disrepair, the smell of diesel fuel nearly made me puke up my meal, etc. The overall condition of the boat is dirty. The drinks were weak and watered down. (I still drank it, nonetheless.) The food was poor. It was a Mexican buffet. The chunks of meet (chicken and beef) were so large that I needed a fork and knife to cut them up into pieces for my fajita. By the time my table was "released", they had run out of some of the items. Plus, some of the plates were dirty. (No one wants to eat off a dirty plate.) Here's another thing, the buffet serving utensils were all wrong, and they would fall into the food, which meant I had to go digging for them if I wanted to use them. Gross!!! Lastly, they served from both sides of the buffet, but only had one utensil per item. (Doesn't anyone think about these things or pay attention to the details?) Also, where was the music? Where was the atmosphere? Again, doesn't anybody thing about these things? (I think that they ought to hire a couple of 'secret shoppers' to give them an honest evaluation of their product.) I think all they think about is getting on and then getting you off. They don't think about referrals (or Yelp), but they ought to. The wait staff did a fine job and the St. Croix River never disappoints - always beautiful. Here's my suggestion, save your money and go elsewhere - maybe to one of the many nice restaurants in Hudson or Stillwater. Just my opinion. read more

If you are determined to go on a cruise and everyone else is booked and you are OK with getting nickel-and-dimed, Afton Hudson Cruise Lines is your obvious choice. My wife's family booked AHCL for a river cruise to celebrate my wife's grandparent's 60th anniversary. The boat is in fair shape and the crew was friendly... the food was not particularly good, but was served hot. (It's about what you'd expect from this type of outfit). We knew that there was a cash bar- but literally no drinks were included. I understand that alcoholic beverages are not included - and sometimes the flat watery soda isn't included (although for the price they paid to rent the boat, soda definitely should have been included). But nothing was included. No iced tea. No punch. No water. No coffee. Literally nothing. (My wife paid 2.50 for water - not bottled water mind you - but water from the bar hose thing the bartender was using). The crew was friendly (although the captain smoked pretty heavily so most of us had to retreat from the top deck so we weren't smoked out)... and the scenery was nice and the cruise itself was great. However, based on the food quality and nickel-and-diming, it definitely wasn't worth the money they charged. 2/5 - would not do again. read more

On August 17, we enjoyed a company picnic cruise with our company's 47 employees. Captain Gordie and First Mate, Lynn were incredible hosts throughout the evening. The Afton Princess brought us aboard right on time and had us back at our requested time for departing for home. Aside from the great service and wonderful food, the trip on the St. Croix held some incredible views. We selected Afton Cruise Lines after a review of several other Twin Cities area dinner cruises...and Afton Cruise Lines had the most agreeable rates and a generous range of options to choose from. From our first conversations with Melissa Winther to arrange the cruise, to our last minutes heading to the dock and departing for home, we had an enjoyable, first rate experience. We will use Afton Cruise Lines again, and would highly recommend them to others consider this type of event. read more

The service was terrible, not once did anyone come over to see if we needed anything. The margaritas were quite generic, expensive, and came in a SMALL cup. I attended the Sunday champagne brunch cruise this fall. As you board the boat they hand you a very small sampler glass of champagne. You can purchase larger glasses of champagne at the bar. First of all these cruises are very reasonably priced that's why I go 3 stars. I have been on a few now. The food is inconsistent and the drinks spendy. This year I took the Jul 3, 2016 cruise at Hudson that was suppose to be from 8pm-11pm. Hudson was a zoo with activity and parking a real drag. There are no signs for the cruises anywhere. We finally took off at 8:25pm and returned at 10pm to dock..We got totally ripped off on the time on the river cruise part of the trip. No one announced dinner and the upper deck people did not know it was served. We made it down stairs to our table to eat right on time though- food was okay this trip. But we were rudely told only 1 plate of food and no seconds until everyone is served and then they would announce when you could go back-no announcement EVER came. BUT people upon being told this were loading plates like it was the last supper-there were no desserts because people were carting off 6 at a time. They brought out more and there ended up being left over food because no one was told we could go back. Sad We were then told the water patrol contacted the crew and we had to go back to dock and could not go to the usual location to watch the fireworks due to the out of control boats numbers out on the water. When we docked, I was seated in a chair with a nice view for the fireworks, then everyone on board stormed the deck area and stood in front of me. I am handicapped and went down a flight of stairs and viewed what I could see of the fireworks indoors thanks to a nice crew member. So the fireworks views we were promised sucked too. The worse thing about the trip was the just horrible music they had piped in on their really awful PA system. It was such bad bad bad country crap. If you want mood music just go instrumental or musak and shut the crap off during the fireworks. I doubt if I'm ever going on this cruise again. July 3 was a beautiful day and the food was okay but if you go on a fireworks cruise and don't get to see them as promised with a great view, why bother going? read more

Mother's day 2021. 5 Minutes prior to departure, they announced that the bathrooms were out of order completely....yet they departed anyways. (most likely to not have to issue refunds) I'm no law expert, but I am pretty sure this violates some type of law, ordinance, or at the very least ethics. Next we were assigned the last table number and for the food, we were released by table number. This means not only were we last, but the first tables could get their 2nd or 3rd by the time we got out chance to eat. They ran out of cacciatore, kielbasa, and the other meat we only got a glimpse of. Making a massive tray on bland eggs to cover this up is not acceptable. There was also reported that there were desserts, but we only saw 1 type of muffin by the time we got called to go up. With no bathrooms, nobody wanted to have anything to drink that they hadn't already consumed. Children were having accidents on account of no bathrooms, adults were contemplating just going over the edge to not have accidents themselves, and major food was missing. Our server (it was his first day) did a great job with the hand he was dealt. He's the reason you get at least 1 star. When calling to complain, we got excuse after excuse. We chartered the Afton Princess for a rehearsal dinner/grooms dinner the night before our wedding. The day before, a boat sank in Hudson and took the dock there along with it. We had good communication with the Afton Cruise lines, guests were redirected and we had a great time. Only issue was it wasn't totally clear to guests where the boat was once they were at the address in Afton. Nevertheless, they all made it. Servers were plentiful, food was popular and plentiful, the St. Croix was gorgeous. I was really pleasantly surprised by how easy and wonderful the experience was. Hooray! read more

Terrible, terrible, terrible!! If I could give negative starts I would. We attended the 11am Mothers Day brunch. We will never do anything with this company again! First of all, the boat had an over all dirty/slimy feel to it. The complimentary champagne was in a shot glass. The complimentary juice? Where? The complementary coffee and water tasted like the river. Even the fountain drinks/etc had that river water taste to it. Secondly, you're table number has to be released to the buffet. We waited over an hour to get released and when we got to the buffet they ran out of things. No fish, never saw any waffles, no hash browns, no cinnamon rolls or muffins. What was left was subpar. We even had to wait for clean plates. Ridiculous!!! The service wasn't very good either. Lastly, when I called to get a refund the only thing they would offer was another cruise. Really? The captain came storming into the entertainment area and said cut it. The entertainer was finishing up when, less than a minute later, the captain cut the power to the mic. Seriously disappointing. Booked Italian Dinner Cruise on Friday nite. We did the Stillwater St. Louis Ribs and Chicken for a lot less money, better food, friendlier service. This food was not fresh food and not really Italian. Choice of desserts was a selection of ONE; antipasto was missing; garlic toast was so hard you nearly broke a tooth biting it the Alfredo was a lime green color. We never received a confirmation email. Online it said that the credit card was processed so I did not click NEXT a second time trying to get a full page confirmation and risk getting charged again. Instead I copied the confirmation number by pen and phone and the address. Turns out the address (and if you click for direction on their web site you get this same address so directions is for the BUSINESS OFFICE not the boarding location) was for AFTON marina. No boat, nobody knows anything - no nothing. Finally found the Afton House (caters the food) and was told the boat boards in HUDSON! The Afton address is the business office. We called the phone number trying to find the boat and it rang 25 times with no answer. We were not happy when we compare to Stillwater which was cheaper and excellent food and much more organized. They also provide you a parking lot rather than Hudson where you have to compete for every other public parking space and walk several blocks back to the boarding location. The boarding dock was not well maintained with layers of rugs in certain parts. Watch you step very carefully. We wont' be back. read more

WEDDINGS BEWARE! Take the time to read this, it may just save your day. My wedding was on 7/16/16 and what should have been an excellent experience turned out to be very poor with poor customer service to rectify the situations. -The first red flag should have been when my fiancee and I went to their food tasting in spring 2016. They offer a very extensive menu, but only shared a fraction of it during the tasting. We were not overly impressed with their selection so we ended up having to go back again for a second tasting. We really enjoyed our second tasting and ended up choosing a chicken option from their Hawaiian themed meal, as well as a tilapia fish option, and the rice pilaf in place of a potato. -Fast forward to our wedding day. The food was served. Everyone was hungry and looking forward to eating. My husband and I sat down and immediately noticed upon cutting into the fish that it was raw. RAW FISH. UNCOOKED ON THE INSIDE. We spoke to the head waitress who apologized, but said there was nothing that could be done about it since we were not near the kitchen. -At least we had the delicious rice pilaf to fall back on right? Nope. WE DID NOT GET THE RICE PILAF THAT WE ORDERED. It was a rice dish, but just didn't taste right. My husband did not eat it because he didn't like the taste. After the fact, we found out that a NEW CHEF IN THE KITCHEN SCREWED UP THE ORDER. We received a Spanish rice that was meant to go to a different wedding that was taking place that day. -The pasta option (that came with the meal that we had no choice over) did not taste good. The buns were all dried out. - Other grievances: The captain smoked cigarettes during the ceremony and it was so distracting to guests that he had to be asked to close the door to the captains quarters; I was told, specifically, that our actual ceremony could begin after the captain went over the safety guidelines/demonstration. We never got this. If something happened and we needed to use life vests, not one guest would have had a clue where to locate them. -Several COMPLAINTS were made with Dan, the general manager, mainly about the food. He agreed to refund us the price of the food that was screwed up. That amounted to half of the cost of the food. WE RECEIVED AN INITIAL CHECK FOR OVER $200 LESS THAN WHAT WE WERE SUPPOSED TO. -It took 3 phone calls for them to figure out why. It turns out THEY CALCULATED THE FINAL BILL WRONG. They did not calculate a service fee to the wait staff accurately. Even though we had to sign off and agree upon the final bill and payment, they stated nothing could be done about THEIR ERROR since we signed a contract saying we'd pay the service agreement. But wait, there's more-we were still being charged the service fee for the food that had been refunded. -Once again, I called to complain about how poor of a customer experience this whole situation had been. WHY WOULD WE PAY A SERVICE FEE FOR FOOD WE'RE NOT PAYING FOR? They agreed to issue yet another refund. -Two weeks later, I STILL HADN'T RECEIVED THE FULL REFUND WE WERE DUE. I called to see what was taking so long and it turns out they sent this second refund check to the INCORRECT ADDRESS. Let me state for the record that I provided them an updated address no less than three times prior and the first refund check came to the correct address. -At this point we were into the first part of September before we received the second refund check. That was SIX WEEKS AFTER OUR WEDDING WE WERE STILL DEALING WITH THIS. -Here's a piece of advice to anyone out there: Dan, the general manager, sounds like a nice guy on the phone, but my real feelings are that he doesn't care about anything as long as he gets his money and doesn't have to listen to complaints on the phone. HE HAS AN EXCUSE FOR EVERYTHING. Rather than just owning all of these errors, he continued to make excuses. I caution everyone to think twice before they have a wedding here. read more

My coworkers and I went on the Fajitas and Margaritas cruise on the Grand Duchess. The boat itself was fine and the St. Croix was beautiful, but the rest was a disappointment. The margaritas were served in tiny disposable plastic cups and were extremely weak, yet they still cost $8. I could get the same drink at a lemonade stand for 25 cents. After one round of drinks, they ran out of margaritas. They served Tequila Sunrises for the rest of the night, which I like, but it's a MARGARITA cruise! As for the food: it was definitely tacos, not fajitas, and everything was subpar. Finally, the servers were slow, unprofessional, and inattentive. read more

We went on the Father's Day Brunch cruise this past Sunday. We were seated at a table on the second level. Unbeknownst to us, there was only one buffet line and it was on the first level.The brunch buffet left a bit to be desired. We were literally the second last table to get our food and by the time we got there- the food was cold and there was not one piece of chicken remaining Many other items had very little remaining- including the fish. We should be guaranteed the same quality and selection of food as the people who were "lucky" enough to be seated on the first level- we did pay exactly the same amount of money for our tickets. I would suggest that mgmt allow the entire group of passengers to go through the buffet line at least once before allowing everyone on the first level to fill up their plates a second or third time. It just does not seem very fair...or else add a second buffet line on the second level as anyone seated up there literally gets cheated. read more
