We just came back from a celebration of life there this morning. The space is lovely so reminiscent of the eating 20's with decor and black and white theme. Service was excellent and non intrusive. We had a deeply disappointing Valentine's Day dinner, largely due to poor management and inadequate staffing. When we arrived on time for our 7:00 p.m. reservation, we found a long line just to reach the hostess stand. It was immediately clear the restaurant was running significantly behind. We weren't seated until about 15-20 minutes later. What happened next set the tone for the rest of the evening. Instead of walking us to our table and ensuring we were settled--as you would expect from a restaurant positioning itself as upscale--the lone hostess simply pointed across the room and said, "You'll be sitting over there," before returning to the stand. I understand they were backed up, but that level of detachment felt inappropriate for the caliber of experience they claim to offer. We didn't receive water until around 7:30 p.m., and we didn't meet our server until roughly 7:40 p.m. The couple seated near us, who had arrived right behind us, became so frustrated by the lack of service that they left before even getting water. Honestly, I couldn't blame them. Our starter--oysters--arrived around 8:00 p.m., a full hour after we walked in. The kitchen didn't have enough to fulfill our order, so they brought only an order and a half and removed one from the bill. Unfortunately, the quality was even more disappointing than the quantity. The oysters were paper-thin--nothing like what I've had in Boston, California, or even other places in Minnesota. Six of these oysters barely equaled the meat of a single properly sized one elsewhere. Our entrées arrived around 8:30 p.m. They were fine--average for a restaurant of this type--but the portions were noticeably small, especially considering the price point. Then, around 9:00 p.m., we were told the kitchen had run out of one of the desserts we ordered. We were offered the only remaining option or a last-minute variation they had improvised. We didn't delay in choosing, yet we still didn't receive our bill until about 9:30 p.m. With just one modestly priced glass of wine each, our total came to $176 with tip. I could have gone to several other restaurants that night, spent $100 less, and had a far better experience. I genuinely want the Commodore to succeed. I love the history of the building, the ambiance, and the vintage photographs. But those things alone don't bring customers back. Reliable service, adequate staffing, consistent menu availability, and quality ingredients--especially something as simple as oysters--are what create repeat business. I'm willing to give the Commodore another chance, but it would require an acknowledgment from management that they fell short on what should have been a special evening, along with appropriate compensation for the experience we had. read more

Attended the soft (re-) opening Thurs 18 Sept 2025. Unfortunately I have little good to say regarding the experience. I have no truck with the staff, who were doing their very best in the overwhelmingly bad situation management put them into. Quite obvious to all in attendance that the staff were not trained in the menu/facilities/products, etc. No co-ordination between front and back of house staff. Service, when it existed, was very delayed. 30 mins before anyone addressed our party of four. Another 40 mins for water to arrive. Drinks, about 45 minutes. Never did receive two of the four entree`s ordered, and we were charged for 2 BOTTLES of wine when 2 GLASSES were ordered. "Background" music was too loud, causing everyone to shout across tables. Blech. In short, quite the mess. A tragedy if they don't get their act together, as the facility itself is gorgeous and deserves better than this. Hard to recommend at this time. Really unfortunate...wanted to surprise my wife for her birthday here. They don't take reservations and the place was packed. We were ok with. 30 minute wait and waited until front of house got us a table. 15 minutes later our server came by and put an order in for drinks and appetizers and when we asked for anything on the menu ( we were very hungry by this point) our server said it would take over an hour for us to even get an appetizer. That said he also mentioned that any mains would take longer as well and sincerely apologized for the delay at the kitchen and didn't know why folks were still being seated if they were that far behind. We ended up leaving and not even getting a drink and overall were very sad with the service except our waiter who was honest with us about the situation. read more

We were here to celebrate a birthday milestone. First, the menu we were presented did not come close to having all of the items that were on the website menu. Most of us were disappointed that we could not order the items which we really wanted. Three of us ordered the 10 oz. rib eye steak. I have never seen a rib eye that was so thin. It was approximately 1/2 inch thick. The two of us who had ordered ours to be cooked medium and medium well were forced to eat a very tough steak that did not cut easily. None of us were impressed with the flavor. Two of us ordered the potato puree as a side to the steak. It was full of lumps and the portions were very small. The fourth person ordered the chicken and potato puree and thought that the chicken was flavorful. The caesar salad and french onion soup were only adequate. The highlight was the specialty drinks, which were delicious, and a bottle of wine for the table was half price during happy hour. Overall our experience was disappointing. read more

Not just our table, everyone around us had the same inexcusable experience. Yet, Zero, No management interaction throughout, none at the table, the check stand, the door, nowhere ever! What is more important, than your guests having a good experience? Nearly every single item we wanted was unavailable, at 6:00 on a Saturday night? Sometimes food had gone past its expiration date. The final checks given us still had all the food that was unavailable included in the bill. What are we idiots? What a disaster and disgrace to the legacy of this landmark. Dinner beware! Don't even consider a visit until there is all new management and true reviews proving it's worry of your money and visit. Such a shame. Their management should ashamed of themselves and know better. I LOVE the decor. I want to move in. Make reservations. Yeah, there's a parking lot, but you're better off sliding in the first street spot you find, the lot is always full. I've been here for happy hour and dinner. When I went for happy hour I learned this place does not have happy hour. Fail. $12 for each drink. They make some damn good cocktails, but then the bill comes and you're like "80% of this is liquor?" Oops. When I came for dinner there must have been maybe four other diners, besides me and my fiancée, that were under the age of 60 in the ENTIRE massive restaurant. I'm not hatin' but I was not expecting an old folks home. There was literally no diversity, aside from staff. Ok, on to the drink and food rundown. I'll try to be quick. Drinks - I've tried like 5. The Commodare and Root and Rye are my favorite because they came with garnishes I could eat. Food - Get the toast for sure. Rabbit Rillette is the winner on flavor, BUT I had two large bones in mine, which having bones in my mouth doesn't bug me. However, I wasn't expecting it, my fiancée didn't find any bones in his, and I really wasn't into picking it out of my mouth at this type of restaurant. I'd gnaw the heck out of a chicken bone tho. Ham and cheese croquettes, and deviled lobster eggs. Yes, more please. Yummy bread. Buttery focaccia and some raisin walnut thing. I usually try not to fill up on bread, but I ate it all. Except the butter was too hard, which isn't a bad thing if you're like me and probably spread more then you should on your bread. Smoked salmon salad, meh. The salmon was a bit dry, and I wish the horseradish cream dressing had some zip. Pork schnitzel with wild mushrooms, and truffle spätzle. Oh my god. I didn't want to stop eating this. If I was married to a restaurant, it would be this one. I love you, Commodore! I love all things Gatsby, so if you're into F. Scott Fitzgerald as much as I am, you'd feel right at home. The décor, the photos on the wall, the chandeliers, the ceilings and the floor tiling are all the raging 20's and 30's. The building itself is an historic site, and the Art Deco interior is stunning. It is said that F. Scott Fitzgerald himself lived upstairs during his early years of living in Saint Paul, his birthplace. This is one of the few places I've seen in Saint Paul that has Scallops on their bar menu and it's a staple feature, not a special. And I've gone on my fair share of Scallop searching over many years scouring the best places to eat in the Twin Cities. My friend and I will leave no Scallop uneaten. I'm talking 4 or 5 full seared scallops, not $30 for 2 measly morsels that leave both partners wanting more. No sir, not here. Their Herb aioli is fabulous with the Scallops. We also enjoy the bar Fries, simple enough, but oh so tasty because they have this seasoning on the fries that is just so delicious. The other good items are the Sliders, asparagus sides, steak, and desserts. But oh. Food menu aside, their cocktails are phenomenal. They recently featured their 7 Deadly Gins, serving in October and November. I've had one of them, but I kinda want to try them all. I had Lust. It was the most superb cocktail I've ever had in the Twin Cities. Why is it so good? It's beautiful as well as strong. It comes with 2 parts that you mix together. It had a flower floating in it. The lounge at the Commodore is a great place to go if you want to feel fabulous. The decor is beautiful and will definitely appeal to history lovers. The cocktails are quite good too-- my favorites are the Fitzgerald and the Tequila cocktail. I'm a member of their bootleggers club which I would say is definitely is worth the $20-- you get one free app/month and $2 off your first cocktail every time you go. They also have a lot of 1920s-themed events that you can get discounted entry for, but I haven't been to those yet. Though I love treating myself to a trip to the Commodore, I can't give it a full 5 stars because I just can't get behind the food. I've only ever tried appetizers, but have had many that are underwhelming. It does look like they have revamped their menu since I last went, so hopefully there is some improvement. This place is worth a visit for the ambiance alone. I'm not usually a feng shui type of person but there is something about this place that just feels right - its really hard to describe. It's not hard to imagine yourself an extra in the Great Gatsby movie or other 1920s period piece with the black and white floors, classic cocktail bar and Fred Astair movies showing (silently) off on a screen in an adjoining room. Its the kind of place that makes you want to sit, relax and nurse a stiff drink while you chat with your buddy or date. There are several dining rooms and and upper and lower bar so even though it was busy, it never felt crowded on the Thursday night that we visited. To be honest, while the food was good, it is so overshadowed by the cool interior that even if they served cardboard it would be hard not to have a great evening - especially after starting with a stiff drink. My buddy and I started with the bacon wrapped dates (fine) and the ham and cheese croquettes (just ok) - the menu leans to old school classics, followed up by a classic waldorf salad (also fine). For mains he had the pork schnitzel (he really liked it) while I had the pan roasted beef tenderloin (tasty) and finished with another classic, creme brulee. Again, solid food menu but certainly not 5 star food. Service was fine but not too too special, but that's ok, we were happy to just bask in the cool space and catch up. Recommended. read more

Well monthly dinner club gave the commodore a try. The ambiance was a hit. The bartender was clearly overwhelmed for he was very, "dry" and unwelcoming. The food was not one of our best. Cheese curds were very good and the dipping sauces made them even better. Lobster eggs, not a fan, but some did enjoy them. Rib eye was good and lamb chops were 50/50. Beef bolognese was a major let down and the scallops were good but neither special. Desert wasn't worth mentioning. This place is simply beautiful. It's like drinking and dining in an old film. The food is good, but honestly not what I come here for. I could get the wings or the steak as good and probably cheaper at a lot of places in town. Who cares? None would have the beauty, the atmosphere embodied by the Commodore. For drinks, this is truly top notch. Martinis, Cosmos, Margaritas even are all superior. They pour just heavy enough on the shots with high quality mixes. Appropriate to the decor, they know how to make a drink. I have found the service to be consistently good and friendly, even at very busy times. They handle a party of ten as well as a party of two, a refreshing change from the many venues that seem to be disorganized and downright whiny about groups. The lot is large, but in busy times parking can still be a challenge so plan ahead. It's best to first try this gem at an off peak time to really soak the beauty in, hassle free. read more

This is an interesting restaurant housed in the bottom of a condo or apartment building. Small parking lot. The atmosphere is totally cool. Made me feel like I was in The Great Gatsby. Modern, yet also has a feel of the older sophisticated times. I enjoyed an amazing cocktail! I ordered the gnocchi, which was light and delicious. Not a huge serving, but just enough to have you satisfied. My companion ordered a curry cauliflower dish which had really great flavors. Another friend ordered the veggie tempura, which she enjoyed. Great atmosphere at this classy, art deco-inspired space with American fare and libations. Originally opened in the 1930's, The Commodore has a cozy and upscale feel with the addition of small tables and padded furniture that will make it hard to leave. There are multiple rooms to help guests feel like they have their own "area" when they drink and dine helping customers feel like they have privacy and reducing some noise. The drinks were amazing but the food was just ok. The Commodore and Old Fashioned were our favorites (went with a group of 8). We loved the dark cherry flavor of The Commodore and punch of whiskey with the Old Fashioned. The Lobster Deviled eggs good but needed more seasoning and larger chunks of lobster. Great option for deviled egg lovers from a nice play on the dish. It's even a good option for those who don't love deviled eggs because there aren't overpowering additions of mayo and mustard like traditional deviled eggs. In terms of food, I got the Commodore Burger which has All Natural Ground Beef, White Cheddar, Caramelized Onions, and Tomato Jam served with Commodore Fries. The burger was cooked well and was nicely seasoned but the tomato jam was far too sweet. The Walleye was good, but small for $28 and the rice was bland. For dessert, the Pot de Creme had a good coffee flavor but tasted like coffee flavored whipped cream and didn't have much body or texture elements. The cheesecake however, was delicious. Great addition of the blood orange glaze and strong white chocolate flavor throughout the entire slice without being too heavy. Loved it!! Took my husband here for his birthday in April. Food in lounge was fantastic-We had the upscale cheese curds that were the best I ever tasted!!! Good salad- a play on the Waldorf nice and crunchy but something was too sour about it. The Steak Frites were good. The fries and dipping aioli were stellar but the flat iron steak was a bit on the tough side. They should give you the veggie they would give on the side when you order the potato purée. They take it away if you order the fries. Wine flight excellent and good value. Our Server was the best!! Super nice and down to earth even though the atmosphere was upscale. Visiting for my first time in many years, out for a friend's birthday. A group of 10 or so entered around 10:40. We were abruptly approached and advised, rather loudly by management that the bar would be closing shortly. And that though we were a large group (spending a good amount of money) they try to get us a drink and unfortunately his demeanor was less than hospitable. Next, our waitress joined us. Advising us that we would be able to get one drink and was rather short, seemed annoyed by our arrival. when one of our attendees, who was not standing there when the manager gave his speech, asked if we could order a piece of cake for the birthday girl we were advised quite rudely that there's no staff on, 'absolutely no food available.' I respect the reality that the staff may not of been on. It was the attitude with which we were met. For such a beautiful establishment, for its price point and the enjoyment of historic Saint Paul, i expected a much more welcoming, calm and luxurious experience. It is too bad that this all was trumped by rude wait staff, and an intrusive and gruff manager who then at closing- acted more like it was the close of a night club on Hennepin than the beautiful social club we sat in.... Well done, especially for a new place! Cocktails are creative and well done, the space is well suited for the vibe and approach of the menu, and the food was outstanding. Pricing was below expected (thank you!). Cocktails: we went with the Fitzgerald and the Commodore, two of their signature. Excellent craftsmanship and taste. Appetizers: Our appetizers we would have ordered again right then if the main course wasn't already no the way. The lobster deviled eggs are amazing which we coupled with the fried risotto. That combo is fantastic. Main course: pork scaloppini is creative and the tastes of the elements are outstanding. A bit sweet for some, but for me perfect. The sole filet was fantastic. The only fail was the side of brussels sprouts: these were the too long boiled small guys that the runt of the litter left behind. Service: our server didn't seem to be exactly a fit for the place. I fell in love last night. This is hands down my new favorite place. It is just my cup - o - tea. I love everything about it. The decor and feeling you get inside is unbelievable. Very old school swanky roaring 20's. Black and white art. Crystal light fixtures. Nice jazzy music in the background. Tons of different seating options encouraging sitting back with a top notch cocktail. We had the blood and sand and the commodore. Both were perfectly boozy and just the way I like them. i also got myself a chocolate martini and was not disappointed in the least. The soup was velvety and smooth. Pea, spinach, goat cheese, and bacon bisque. We also had a chocolate dessert. Next time I will go with the creme brulee. The menu prices were actually not too bad for the quality of this place. The first thing you notice about the Commodore is the breathtaking interior. 1920ies art Deco style architecture, the marble, floors, everything about this place screams style and decadence. If you have the clothing to pull off a period look into highly recommend you do. We saw several people so attired. The service was impeccable. I could not have been happier. Even when we didn't like one of there most popular dishes. Our server and runners treated us like we were the most important people in the restaurant at that time. ( trust me we wrestling not) The food was in most cases delicious, in one case not to our taste,and in one case sublime. We tried the soup of the day. A corn chowder so perfectly rendered you wanted to lick the bowl. The deviled egg with lobster. A tad bit on the bland side for us. The tartar of the day. Beef it was in my top 5 for that dish. We split the pork cutlet with mushroom spatezle. The pork was good and little dry, but the spatezle was truly inspired. I don't know if I have the words to properly in part it's genius. Little pillows of hand cut pasta in a rich savory truffles sauce with several other smaller type mushrooms. The chef said I could get a big bowl of that by it's self for the same price. Mmmmm. I can't wait. We also order a bottle of wine. I was very impressed by the list they keep and the pricing. You really can order a bottle. We also had a couple cocktails to start out both excellent. Living around the corner means we get to frequent this place often in the future. What a gem added to our neighborhood. Street parking. (maybe a small amount of lot space). Very unique to both St. Paul and Minneapolis - they play up the atmosphere and history of the place with silent movies playing and photographs of the era covering the walls. The restaurant is much larger than I expected and the food was good. I was a little disappointed in the limited bar menu (a friend ordered a Moscow mule that was average tasting and in the wrong cup) but I think they really want to stick to that era drink-wise. A must-visit for any fan of Fitzgerald, and the Art Deco era. read more

Met friends out here for drinks and apps at the bar. The inside is gorgeous and the bar looks like a scene from the Great Gatsby. I only drank beer but the selection was was wonderful. Service at the table right behind the bar was slow and impersonal. The place wasn't too busy yet if took 10 minutes for the bartender to take our order. Each time we needed a drink we had to wave him down. The strange part was we saw him take 1 persons order from our group then quickly walk back to the bar rather than asking if anyone else needed anything. My wife and I really felt like us being there was some sort of inconvenience to the bartender . We will not return. On a positive note, the bathrooms have really cool photos. read more

I made reservations but upon arriving the host and hostess seemed a bit off when it came to getting me to my table. They did an excellent job of restoring this place, the music and decor makes for the perfect ambiance, it's ideal for a more intimate occasion or get together with friends. I loved the variety of seating arrangements and the bar itself is fantastic. I started with a glass of wine and the artisan cheese plate which was a perfect match. I went with the filet mignon, potato puree and green beans with Bernaise sauce on the side. The steak was cooked just as I requested and seasoned very well, the potato puree and green beans were prepared with full flavor as well. The decor and ambience is most definitely classy and has some historic touches. There's an art deco flavor to it all. From what I've been told it's a restored version of the original interior and not a recreation? I was here with my siblings and spouses so we had a chance to order many appetizers, entrees, desserts, and drinks. We shared a few different appetizers, but we each had our own entrees. I think however, we all left looking for more food. The portions are small for the price. I tried the Fitzgerald cocktail. It's gin based and tasted nice. Overall we enjoyed our meals, we enjoyed the drinks, and desserts. We had a great time. The service was wonderful and professional. It's a level of service that I'm not used to. The water was always full and plates were cleared with fresh silverware for each course. They did spend a lot of time fussing over everyone. The parking is free, thankfully! They have a large private parking lot. To say this is a little on the spendier side is an understatement. The food quality was exceptional, the atmosphere and service were very nice. I attended a wedding reception at the Commodore and it was a fantastic space. The back room was large, it easily accommodated the approximately 100 people that attended the wedding. They had a bar set up in one corner of the room and the DJ in the other. The bar had some nice local beer selections in addition to a few wines and the usual cocktail suspects. Additionally, they added a makeshift dance floor. Everyone had a blast and the room was laid out well. The buffet was very good, one of the better meals I've had at a wedding. I know I will forget everything, but they had grilled peanut chicken on skewers, fruit, a tomato salad with mozzarella (sort of a caprese salad), spinach gratin (very cheesy and flavorful), and the star of the evening: arancini. The rice balls were perfectly crispy and not at all greasy. They were very cheesy and the sauce served alongside was good as well. But, they didn't really need the sauce. Everyone loved these, I imagine they ran out of the arancini first. The Commodore was great about restocking the buffet, even if an item ran out it wasn't long before they had it replaced. The restrooms were clean and easily accessible from the banquet facilities. Although I didn't dine in the actual restaurant I checked it out a bit and it had a classic vibe to is. Maybe a little dated, but restaurants that have been successful and open a long time will tend to look a bit dated. The place was comfortable and I would absolutely eat here. read more

This review is based on a single visit. The place is nice, and I enjoyed the laid back seating in the lounge. The service was subpar. My boyfriend and I spent $52 on 4 drinks (no food). At that price, you'd think the server would be prompt and friendly, but he was neither. Every step of the process seemed slow, from ordering to receiving our order, to getting the bill. I just time traveled to hang with F. Scott Fitz in the 1920's at The Commodore. No wait, I got confused. This place is a legit time warp. AMAZING. We stopped in for a cocktail on a Tuesday night, we welcomed to sit anywhere without a tablecloth, and stayed to people watch for over an hour. The space is pure magic, the jazz music playing is perfect. The service was prompt and attentive without hovering, so we were able to nurse our delicious and strong drinks for a while. Not gonna lie, totally went home and started re-reading The Great Gatsby after that. read more
