I rarely leave reviews, but after my mother's recent stay, I feel compelled to share our…read moreexperience. From the beginning, there were serious concerns about her care. On May 5, she was in visible distress--crying and shaking from IV pain--yet her discomfort was not addressed with urgency. Instead of removing the painful IV when requested, a nurse proceeded to place another one while she was still in pain. The same nurse also rushed her through discharge paperwork without ensuring she understood what she was signing, which felt dismissive and inappropriate. Medication management was another major issue. At discharge, medications that had already been discontinued were still listed and even administered. The discharge paperwork contained inaccurate information, which could have led to serious harm if my mother hadn't caught it herself. This points to breakdowns in communication and patient safety protocols. When I asked to speak with a patient advocate, the situation was escalated unnecessarily instead of being handled appropriately. It did not seem like staff were prepared to respond to patient concerns in a supportive or informed way. What was especially troubling was overhearing staff refuse to assist another elderly patient who needed help using the bathroom, leaving them in an unacceptable condition. Witnessing that contributed to our growing concern about the level of care being provided. We also had issues with discharge planning. Despite ongoing symptoms, our request for an additional night of observation was denied. Prescriptions were sent to a pharmacy two hours away instead of the hospital pharmacy as requested, creating unnecessary stress at discharge. Basic care needs were difficult to meet throughout the stay. Assistance with bathing was delayed, and we often had to request cleaning for the bathroom. The environment did not feel consistently maintained, and the layout made it difficult for someone with mobility challenges to use safely. Case management support was also lacking. When we asked for help with medical equipment and supplies, we were told to coordinate everything ourselves. The response felt dismissive and did not reflect the level of support we expected during discharge planning. Overall, this experience resulted in a complete loss of confidence in the facility. My mother now feels unsafe returning due to concerns about communication, care quality, and patient safety. I hope this feedback leads to meaningful improvements, because no patient or family should have to go through an experience like this.

St. D's quality of care on the floor has noticeably declined since the facility changed ownership…read more There are two main scenarios: veteran nurses who have stayed primarily for retirement benefits, and newly graduated nurses who are struggling to keep up. Many of the experienced nurses rarely assist CNAs with tasks like moving patients in and out of bed, often leaving family members to step in and help instead. In contrast, the newer nurses are generally more willing to assist when needed. Response times to call buttons range from just a few minutes to over half an hour, with delays worsening at night due to the absence of unit secretaries. This is particularly unacceptable for patients who urgently need help, such as getting to and from the bedside commode. Calling for medication is problematic. When pain medication was requested for a patient with stage 4 cancer, there was a 25-minute wait before having to use the call button again. A nurse not assigned to the patient eventually responded, stating it was too soon for more medication, although the patient had not received any for over six hours. After clarification, the nurse realized she had mistakenly checked the wrong patient's file and later apologized, which was appreciated. This was a problem more than once. A recurring issue I have observed over the past eight days is that employees are frequently using their cell phones--either browsing online or talking to friends using earbuds--while on duty. This occurs even when patients' call lights are flashing, indicating they need assistance. The hospital's long-standing affiliated doctors continue to provide good to excellent care, and this remains the primary reason I would still recommend this hospital to others.

I'm not real sure if that's an official name or just a nickname, but if you hear it referred to as that, then this is the place they're talking about. On one of my trips to MS, I managed to land in the ER with abdominal pain. I was there for a couple of weeks on that visit and they didn't want to wait for me to get back to FL, so they had me see a GI doctor the next day and I was sent here for a sonogram. I was greeted with a smile upon arrival and checked it. I was taken back almost immediately and the tech was super sweet - that good 'ole southern hospitality. My mother went with me and during her wait while I was having the test done, she waiting in a large, comfortable waiting area with free coffee, a television, and plenty of magazines. If ever in MS and in need of medical testing, I wouldn't hesitate to return here.

Then the male doctor came and apologized after almost 6 hours .I think he was highly unprofessional came in the room and did not speak him or the nurse.Just to come back to say it's gonna be another 2 hours before she can have surgery so we waited look like over 8-9 hours before she even went to surgery. That is not acceptable and I think he thought that it was okay because they think they can do whatever you have options use them. They prepped her only to sit up for 11 hours waiting on surgery. And the doctor's assistant was named Caroline. She was rude unprofessional. She practically kicked me out of recovery room and gave me a green card. Didn't explain anything. People like you won't have any good luck and you have no business dealing with people with sequences or illnesses of any kind. Shame on you. Shame on this hospital. Y'all should have a better procedure than to make people wait for 11 hours for a 30-minute surgery. My daughter wasn't a priority

What can be fixed if the nurses were rude and apathetic? I can be more specific if that's what's needed. I called the number and got voicemail. In hindsight, I was told fussed at for not walking after delivery but I was in so much pain. I was in so much because I was not receiving pain medicine because I didn't know I was supposed to ask for it. I couldn't lift my right leg and needed help and only after I mentioned to one of the baby nurses did she say why that may be and confirmed I had received and injection in that leg. I was severely anemic prior to delivery so I was already weak. Was given a regular diet after a c-section (my first) so that caused more pain and problems yet just about everyone made me feel like I was the problem. No one thought to step back and say let's fix this and see what's going on? Hopefully, some changes have been made.

NO ONE told my wife and I this beforehand. My wife is only here two weeks before the expected due date due to her blood pressure. Our car seat is stuck in place inside the vehicle and isn't coming out even if Batman and Superman collaborated on it. The overall rating of this visit will depend mightily on how much help we get over the next 24-36 hours. Update: the deal with the car seat ended up not being that big a deal. That said, I'm not sure why it was made into a big deal in the first place. The bellhop-types who helped us wheel our rack of possessions to the car -- with our newborn son in his mother's arms -- were nice and cordial. Nurse Cheryl and Roshell in the nursery department were excellent with us, as was the lactation adviser whose name escapes me. They're the reasons my rating is as high as it is. The checkout process was painfully slow like it is for everyone. Sometimes you have to help folk do their jobs faster, that's all. The customer is always king, not red tape!

My partner was crying and shaking from intense stomach pains, and when we got there the triage nurse acted like my partner was exaggerating the pain without even knowing what the problem was. We sat in the waiting room and my partner would periodically go to the bathroom to vomit. After several times of doing this and about 45 minutes of waiting she began to vomit blood. She informed the nurse who shrugged her off and said they were waiting on a room. After another hour of waiting we still had not been seen and my partner was delirious from pain, lack of sleep, and dehydration. The nurses showed absolutely no concern nor sense of urgency. It was a different time back then, but she forged ahead and became a great nurse due to the people she worked with who became family. But UMMC has always been number one when it came to caring for its patients, having the newest technology, the best bedside manner, and that great hospitality of asking, "How are you doing, and are you comfortable." These are questions they ask the family. So, you can imagine how wonderfully they treat their patients. When you step inside or outside Mississippi, people know about UMMC because this hospital has built a reputation for doing everything in its power to heal you and make sure you have the best doctors. As a child, when I was here for the summer visiting my grandma, she would take me to work with her for a few hours until my Uncles came to get me. I have walked these halls starting out as a child and into adulthood. So, today, I walked down memory lane again, admiring the familiarity of the rooms, hallways, and the digital clock I once stared at as I was getting a cast for my right arm or the stitches I was getting above my left eye. I kept Grandma and a host of her co-workers on their toes. But let me tell you what was really special today. Generations upon generations have followed in their parent's footsteps right here at UMMC. I was talking to my mom's doctor, and he picked up on my mom's maiden name. He smiled and said, "Your Grandma used to work here."
