There's nothing more unassuming then St. Elmo Deli. St. Elmo deli is like the color Antique White sitting next to the color Natural Linen on the color swatch. St. Elmo Deli is like Waldo on that page where every other character is wearing a red and white striped sweater and hat. St. Elmo Deli is like lying down a bed, and you're like... "oh what is this a Tempurpedic?" and then the owner replies, "oh no... it's just a memory foam mattress." Ok... so St. Elmo Deli is at the bottom of that large building on Saint Elmo that essentially takes up like a city block. Across from Bach to Rock, Henry's Sweet Retreat, Dominos etc. Like the other stores at the bottom of the building, there is a vertical brown/purple decorative banner that marks the store. Go in... and you'll see the menu is almost entirely made up of a sandwich choices. I decided to get the Turkey, Swiss, and Spouts Sandwich on multigrain. I can't remember... but it had a name. It was like "The St. Elmo Special" or something. Really the main reason I got it was the sprouts. I LOVE ME SOME SPROUTS. I got home to find that there was a little quarter of pickle that was wrapped up and attached my sandwich. Extra cute points. The sandwich itself was next to perfect. It was everything I wanted in a turkey sandwich. Good bread, good amount of turkey, fresh tomato and lettuce. They didn't overdo it with the mayo, and deli meat and cheese were good quality. Next time I'm gonna ask them to toast the bread I'm telling you, it was one dank sandwich; and as it's one of those small little office building delis, the prices were on point. I got that sandwich and a bag of pretzels with everything bagel seasoning on it for 8.65. I wish they had a few more options for sides. They had pasta salad in the little drink/accessory fridge, but it didn't look to fantastic. They had bags of chips and muffins/danishes... but that's about it. Some coleslaw/ potato salad/ egg salad etc would be nice. You'll definitely see me back at St. Elmo Deli soon. Until they put a Jersey Mikes in Bethesda... Doesn't look like many people are talking about their breakfast sandwiches but...they are absolutely DELICIOUS! And for the price in this area??! My boyfriend raves about their croissant sandwiches, but my favorite is the fresh mozzarella, tomato, sausage, egg, and pesto English muffin sandwich. It's a mouthful to say when ordering but yalllll it's a mouthful of flavor! Actually, it's the only thing I've tried and I can never muster up the courage to try something new because I love it so much ha. The first visits were during the COVID lockdown, and when we went in today, the lady (not sure but she might be the owner?) recognized us and we started talking about our families. Located in the Landow building along St Elmo Ave. $6.00 minimum to pay with plastic. I got shortchanged by a penny. Out of practicality I don't mind but my principle on the matter is that you might as well round to the nearest 5 if that's how you're gonna roll. Light variety of beverage options (coconut water, aloe, energy drinks, juices, coffee, tea, soda), three flavors of Chobani singles, solid array of chips to choose from (yay Popchips). Menu says breakfast starts at 7 but the hours on the door now say 7:30. Asian owner is friendlier to regulars; not docking on service since everyone's a zombie in mornings unless you're a freak of nature. Short order cook may catch an error, gracias-- or burn your bagel. Prices are reasonably suburban for modest portioning. Foil wrapper a little greasy from the hand-off, but nothing outrageous. Flour tortilla griddled gently, just enough salsa for taste without sogginess. Sausage wasn't too greasy, eggs scrambled creamy. I wish the cheese was distributed more evenly. Two-thirds of it was more than enough for my breakfast appetite. Country edition almost as good with the hearty inclusion of potatoes. Not bad, SED is reigning as the local breakfast burrito champion for value ($3.59) and execution. I'll have to try their smoothies. =========== Egg & cheese sandwich with steak used chopped Philly-style beef. I should've stuck to traditional breakfast meats. Nova platter is decent, though the capers need to be drained a little better. Grilled salmon & avocado salad was a disappointment. Wild Alaskan salmon was cooked dry, though half a fresh avocado was wedged between the two small fillets and the thick bed of mixed greens. Shaved carrot, thinly sliced red onion, and capers barely broke up the monotony. Two accompanying tubs of balsamic vinaigrette were necessary to dress the generous salad fixings. Prosciutto and mozzarella sandwich had its namesakes loaded towards the mouth of the sandwich. For food volume they beat out the local Euro eateries, but that edge is lost in terms of quality. Lettuce, coarsely sliced red onion, hot peppers, and canned black olives make the crusty sandwich roll moist. The olives in particular tasted out of place, and overwhelmed the delicate flavors that should be dominant. NY style corned beef sandwich is surprisingly delicious, even if its accompanying pickle wedge was only passable. Protein is perfectly sliced and cooked, and the nicely toasted rye broke my resolve to save half for dinner. Uptown definitely wins on volume but SED offers a reasonable meal portion for a dollar less, with the admirable default of toasting. Seaweed, fruit snacks, aloe water, Naked juice, Red Bull. Salmon spread bagel has some fish layered onto the cream cheese, and while toasted well, my sesame bagel was on the smaller side. Turkey stuffing sandwich special is a shadow of Jetties' Nobadeer, with three generous slices of deli turkey, a moist stuffing patty with flecks of celery, generous layer of cranberry sauce, and a drizzle of chunky country gravy on toasted multigrain. Route 21 kettle chip flavors include dill pickle. Eggplant and portobello panini was nicely toasted, including spring greens, grilled shallots and red peppers. I might've liked it if not for the grainy hummus. Tried another salad only to find that while the turkey is moist and tasty, their pesto is diluted with ranch and my avocado had been forgotten. They occasionally receive a batch of small bagels. You're more likely to get a better salmon spread bagel if they're busy multitasking, otherwise the fish cooks all the way through when applied immediately to just-toasted bagel. read more

Pleasantly surprised to have walked by this place. I am a big deli fan so I could not resist to have lunch here. Of course I 'yelped' to see any recommendations. To my surprise, I had a hard time finding it even searching on the map. Only by typing the name did I find it (maybe that explains the low number of reviews and how old they are). Line was long but moved along fairly quickly (12.30pm). I ordered the Santa Fe chicken since they had no pita for a gyro. Let's just say I was pleasantly surprised! Good size sandwich, soft, moist chicken, very tasty, slight heat, melted pepper jack cheese. Bread was warm, absorbed the juice/cheese on the inside yet toasty and crunchy on the outside. read more

I used to walk by St. Elmo Deli, even used their ATM a few times for a haircut down the street. Still, I never ate there. That changed today, and I wish I'd have done so sooner! Ordered a Greek chicken salad via UberEats. Grilled chicken always seems to be a delicate balance between a dried up hunk of borderline-inedible meat and a juicy breast that's seasoned well on the outside, but barely cooked inside. I'm happy to report they nailed this. The salad was fresh, with a healthy topping of cold, but tender chicken (and honestly, if it's a delivery, I'd rather the meat be chilled rather than wilt the greens) with a great Greek dressing. The artichoke was a nice surprise. For $8, it was a solid deal. Looking forward to trying a few other things from there! read more

I LOVE this place so much. I work across the street and frequently get food here. My favorites are the turkey club, chopped chicken salad and turkey Rueben. The food is always fresh and delicious. The prices can't be beat and the service is amazing. My favorite thing about this place is that it's so reasonably priced for the quality of the food and it's a small family owned business. The location is convenient to downtown Bethesda and there are public parking garages around. My only complaint is that it's only open until 3:30 and it's closed on the weekends. read more

A decent little deli worthy of a spot on my every-other-week Bethesda lunch rotation. Pluses and minuses as follows: + Their "fresh" turkey sub daily lunch special is my go-to. $6.19 + tax for 9-inches of customizable turkey goodness on a warm sub roll and a 16 oz. fountain soda. Not bad at all. I like to dress up the meat and tasty bread with some light mayo, lettuce, tomato, raw onions and cheddar cheese (cheese is 60 cents extra, I believe). + The chicken rice soup is nothing to write home about, but does the trick on a cold winter day. I believe a cup will run you $2.99. + Quite an extensive selection of beverages and potato chips - I like to go with an Honest Tea and a bag of Kettle brand's New York Cheddar with Herbs chips. - CASH ONLY! There's a generic (i.e. non-major bank) ATM right in the store, but it always annoys me a bit to get hit with convenience fees that are half the cost of your lunch. - When it gets busy right around noon, I've had a few orders go awry - missing cheese, random veggies, a wrong sandwich entirely. Not a bad idea to check your order before you leave the store. - Along the same vein, I've had one or two sandwiches come out a little off - stale bread, over-ripened tomatoes, chewy chunks of "what the heck is this" in the turkey. Nothing catastrophic, but you lose a few points. One final aside: This is a little silly, but the the owner, who is generally a very nice and pleasant Japanese man, always seems very reluctant to hand me my cup for my fountain drink. After I pay him, we always stare at each other uncomfortably for a few seconds until he hesitantly and somewhat begrudgingly asks me, "Oh, you want your drink?" ?!? I'm always tempted to sarcastically reply: "No, I just paid you extra money because I only want the sandwich," but I'm afraid he might just take it at face value. This probably has something to do with the fact that I'm a serial-sip-stealer at the fountain (a ninja-like technique mastered over a childhood spent covertly consuming 40 ounces of Cherry Coke Slurpee while only paying for a 20 oz. cup at my local 7-11), but hey, who doesn't engage in a little sippage-thievery from time to time? In any case, if you work in Bethesda, especially in the Landow Building (the deli is literally right downstairs), this is not a bad spot to grab a quick sandwich and a bag of your favorite chips. read more

Last time I came I reviewed the turkey club add onions. I still come here all the time but I tried something new. I got to work a bit early so i decided to get a breakfast burrito. I got there at 10:35, breakfast ends at 10:30 they were still willing to make me a breakfast burrito. My friends who were with me also got breakfast burritos. I had the sausage burrito, and it took a few minutes to get. It was full of sausage, cheeses,and bits of green peppers. We got 2 sides of hot sauce and that really made the meal! The burritos are under $4 and very filling. They also have lots of different flavor chips not your typical dorritos/lays. A decent place to get a sandwich. It is fairly priced and you can get intriguing sandwiches outside of "turkey, lettuce, mayo" or "ham and cheese". I recommend the chicken pesto and Greek sandwich. As someone else stated, when they get busy they tend to screw up orders. One time, I ordered the Chicken Pesto sandwich and was confused when my mouth was on fire. I then realized they mistakenly put some sort of Wasabi paste on it instead of pesto. Oops! Sometimes the owner can be very friendly and sometimes he can be downright rude. I believe he and his wife own this place and the Cafe Xpress a few blocks over. She is much friendlier FWIW. read more

LOVE THIS DELI!! Everything I get from here is not only filling but tasty. They have a wide variety of snacks. They also have smoothies and lattes which I always forget when ordering over the phone. They always have some type of special sandwich too. I've had a ton of their wraps, I got here for breakfast as well sometime. They do not disappoint. I've been going here for years and I think it's the best int he neighborhood. Why pay jetties pricing when you can get just as much food here. There is a $6 min for card or they charge you like .30 cents. If you are driving there is parking across the street in a county metered area. I usually walk here from work. St. Elmo's is hearty and delicious. The guys making sandwiches behind the counter are focused and make quality food. I ordered a Boar's Head turkey sandwich there, on pumpernickel with sprouts, lettuce, thinly sliced raw red onions, and muenster. They use the correct proportions to fill you up for lunch. The owner's wife works down the street at Cafe Express, which has a slightly different deli vibe and a larger eat in area. I recommend this spot if you want a sandwich in Bethesda. I would get lunch from this place all the time, when I worked near-by. The first time I went, I knew what I wanted, but didn't see it on the menu. I wanted basically an avocado and cheese sandwich. So I started to order their turkey sandwich, and leave off the turkey. They listened to what I wanted, and said that I could get a cheese sandwich and add avocado. So that's what I did. And I got the SAME sandwich, like twice a week, for MONTHS. The sandwich was simple: wheat bread, a little mayo, lettuce, tomato, avocado, and a little swiss. That and a bag of Baked Lays, and I was good to go. In and out. I don't work down the street anymore, but when I recently went back to the office to show everyone my new baby, what did I do afterwards? That's right. :) Stopped by for an avocado sandwich. I never leave reviews but I just need to for this place. I was in the area and remembered there was a Quiznos nearby. I discovered it was closed and decided to try St Elmo Deli. It's a plain looking store but don't let that stop you. I ordered the Reuben and was blown away. It was the last thing I expected, and they completely outdid every other sandwich place I've been to. It was so good I ended ordering a different sandwich and was again amazed. Whenever I'm in the area again I will definitely be going here. read more

A great, small, local deli. I come here for lunch all the time. They have a huge variety of sandwiches, salads, fruit, etc. I have never been disappointed with my meal here. Always a generous portion and for a decent price and a short wait. Beats the hell out of Jettie's around the corner (am I the only one who thinks that place is not only not that good, but a total ripoff - oh, did I mention they don't even have chicken....) I recommend their panini's (any with mozzarella or pesto are awesome). Not a place to go out of your way for, but definitely a solid lunch option if you are in the area. Only complaint is the guy that works there and typically runs the cash register could not be less friendly - can't get so much as a smile out of the guy. read more

Had a pretty lackluster experience ordering from this restaurant. We placed an order at 10:43 am for a burger, a sandwich and two breakfast items. Got a call not too long after placing the order saying that they were going to be late, which I can understand as it was going into lunch time. Not long after, however, I get another call because they were refusing to make the breakfast items even though the order was placed before the cutoff time of 11 am... something they apparently couldn't have figured out before making the first call? Then the food arrives... the driver calls way before he arrives at the door and was rude when he finally showed up, ignoring my inquiry if he had change for a $10 bill so I could tip him twice before finally curtly saying no, the fries that came with the burger were half cooked, soggy and gross, the burger was made without the bacon it was ordered with and the chicken salad with bacon, lettuce and tomato was delivered as just a BLT, no chicken salad in sight. The sad thing is, the burger itself and the BLT were both pretty decent, and if the restaurant and driver hadn't been so incompetent I would have gladly given the place a 5 star review. After a terrible first experience, though, I doubt I'll give them an opportunity for another review. read more

I wanted to like this place soooo badly- I work in the building and I'm super busy, so having a deli downstairs seemed like a god send...not so much. In addition to the place not being very clean and the owner not being friendly, I have tried a number of items from the menu, and only the pastrami/corn beef is worth paying for. Even breakfast is super bland and not at all fresh- how they can make breakfast potatoes and bacon taste like cardboard is almost impressive. After bad sandwiches, terrible soup, and bland breakfasts, I tried a salad- assuming that would be impossible to make poorly...wrong...sooo wrong- everything from the huge cuts of carrots to the not fresh lettuce, to the random pineapple pieces, to the bizarre dressing that I had to use a knife to encourage to leave its container- made this order, my very last. read more
