The hamburgers were very good. The meat was very fresh tasting and had a lot of flavor. We found the fries to be a little overly salted. The poutine had a nice gravy and the cheese was OK, but not as good as when made with cheese curds. The chicken burger was also very good. Apparently, at some point, they used to have lettuce wrap burgers, but now they only offer shredded lettuce with the ingredients in a bowl. We arrived closer to 7 PM so it was not busy and it was relatively fast to receive our order. There is no dine in for this walk up restaurant. You order inside and pick up your food outside at the side of the building. They have seating outside around the restaurant, but unfortunately for us a lot of flies and the wasps were around so we ate in our vehicle. Overall, it was pretty decent. The incredible veggie burger with the patty made of perogies was outstanding! So creamy and just the right amount of gooey potatoes! When I took my first bite the patty wanted to slide off but I held it together with my hands and after awhile it just stayed in place. It came with lettuce and tomatoes and a pickle and maybe onions. It was excellent! The St James cinnamon French fries were okay. Not salty and thick enough for my taste buds but the cinnamon did add an appealing and interesting element to them. If only they were a bit chunkier and longer! 5 stars because it is so far, one of the best veggie burgers I've had in my life. read more

+.5 for service I honestly found it a hit and miss. The stuff they do good, it's really good. What they don't do good, it's...really bad. The good: Their fries are amazing here, probably one of the best in Winnipeg. They add cinnamon salt as default, but you can immediately request regular salt or no salt if needed...cinnamon salt is definitely an acquired taste I find (none of my friends like it). The meh: I was also here for fried chicken week and tried their Chipotle BBQ Fried Chicken burger. I honestly wasn't that impressed, the fried batter was a bit tough to eat. At least the chicken was juicy though. The bad: Went back for poutine week 2019 and tried their perogie poutine. Honestly not one of their best products (apparently their 2018 one was a huge hit here), the perogies were bland and they use shredded cheese, not cheese curds. I don't try and let that be the deciding factor, but the gravy was also sadly disappointing. I haven't tried their regular burgers yet here. It looked really good though, so perhaps a future visit is in order. Service is good, and yes the food is slow here. I love the egg addition, adds richness to the burger. It doesn't say, but I think they rise maple bacon. Homemade fries are an awesome touch! But I think they need to buy bigger potatoes s. Mine were like mini fries. Whatever though they were crispy and delicious. Read other reviews about greasy fries and burgers. Not my experience. Maybe it's a time of day thing? I got there not long after they opened. Service was great. Super friendly if not overly quick. Nice to see them giving back to their community as well. Seating inside is limited, which is no fun on a winter day. Outside seating for the summer looks nice. They make everything to oder, so food is a bit of a wait. Good food takes time. I have seen these guys around but, I'll be honest, I was hesitant at first. Anyone that knows the old Red Boot Inn will know the history. A few owners have come in since it was the Boot and didn't really do it justice. Hence my hesitation. Well, one afternoon a craving for hotdogs hit hard and you know how hard it is to find a good hotdog cart dog (which is what I really wanted) in Winterpeg in December?! I figured ok, let's try these guys out. Uhm, yeah, we've been there at least once a week ever since! I love so many things about this place and these guys. First off, burgers made with fresh (never frozen) angus beef, fresh veggies and just the right amount of toppings to make it filling and a little sloppy. They are very accommodating with dietary challenges and allergies (no shellfish on site Yay!). I read another review about greasiness but I haven't experienced that. My fries have always been crispy and, oh yeah, the cinnamon salt?!?!?! I know it sounds weird but it's addicting!!! And who knew, chicken burgers with a slice of pineapple tucked in has changed my whole way of thinking about them. The aforementioned hotdogs are made a little different (butterflied in a brioche bun) but I think I like it way better. Again, fresh topping and so so so filling. All burgers come with fries and, for me at least, it's a full meal you will want to have a nap after! Today I organized a work lunch and they took such great care of us and the multiple orders with varying requests. I asked for a specific time and our food was coming off the grill as I arrived (I was early oops) and still pretty hot when I got back to the office. The team was raving about the food and asking for directions, I probably made them 16 new customers lol The greatest thing about these guys, I think, is the fact that they are wanting to be a part of the community. They support our troops/veterans and the area schools. They give back to the community and want to keep making St. James the awesome place it is. The burgers are alright, if they don't take 20-25 minutes to get to you, or aren't charcoal burnt! I haven't seen a more "popularly disorganized" burger joint in Winnipeg other than this one. So I never wanted to be "that guy" with a complicated fussy order, yet today I was. I started a keto diet a while back and tonight went in and figured I would try and get that taste I have been missing. So I explained what I wanted and what I couldn't have. Instead of being rushed through quickly and given a dry burger on some lettuce, the guy's here took the time to listen to what I wanted and even asked a few questions like if I like garlic etc. They then made me a beautifully seasoned juicy burger in a lettuce wrap full of flavor. I can honestly say that it was the best burger I've had in years. Real customer service like back in the day when what a customer wanted really did matter. Kinda hard to find in today's environment. Gave this place three chances and 2 out of the 3 were bad experiences, the customer service was terrible and the food as well. Customer service is not their strong suit at all. The food is Ok if they get your order right. Apparently default fries means that you can only get Cinnamon fries and no other. If you want a poutine, find it somewhere else because they sprinkle tiny bits of cheese where it really should be called fries and gravy. Short version: Great burgers, terrible sides, everything is covered in a thick layer of grease, but they donate 20% of their tips to veterans, which is cool, and they're super friendly. Long version: The burgers here do taste good, but they are quite greasy. What you think of the onion rings and fries will depend on how you like them. I and my girlfriend both prefer crispy onion rings and fries, so we were quite disappointed to find they were mushy (the onion rings have an ever-so-slight crunch to them). The one thing we were talking about hours after we left this place, though, was grease. Our mouths felt coated in it. If you don't mind a LOT of grease, then you may like this place. They have about a dozen or so different types of burgers. Unfortunately, they only have a single veggie burger among the bunch. (Not sure whether or not you can turn the other burger options into a veggie burger by replacing the patty.) One unique thing about this place is that they don't have a veggie patty. Instead, they use two perogies in lieu of a veggie patty, which does make their veggie burger stand out among all the chickpea options around the city. Another unique thing is that they donate 20% of their tips to veterans and anyone who is using their business platform to make the world a better place is good in my book. Remember to tip generously. And, they are quite friendly here. We were warned about long wait times, but we didn't feel like we waited all that long. Keep in mind that people who come after you might get served before you. It all depends on what you order. Can't say for sure whether I'll be back. The girlfriend had an especially bad experience with the grease, so it doesn't sound like she'll want to return, but I might try it again. My eight year old is such a picky eater and he ate the whole burger (he usually eats half) and all of the fries. What a joke! Slow period (three other customers waiting on single orders each) and it took over 25 minutes for 2 burgers and 2 fries?!?!? Were you growing the potatoes and raising the cows from calves in that time? Plus, when the food inevitably did come out, the order was wrong, upon which the staff member decided that arguing with me about what I had personally ordered was the next best step to take. Ridiculous. The place is the size of a toe nail, yet is filthy (RCAF Jacket has an inch thick coating of dust-bunnies so out of control they look like theyve been feeding upon other dust-bunnies and it is hung above a food prep area!!!), and posters that were anywhere from 3 - 12+ months out of date still hung up on glass that you could barely see thru the smudges and grime. Get your act together folks, its already cost you my family's business after today. Gross. I want to vomit. The guy making the burgers was handling my cash, and then a minute later I watched him walk to the back and make a burger with his hands; he put the burger on the bun with his hands . Despite this, we never received our whole order when we ordered takeout and they made getting a refund quite difficult. We already left the store and were at the park with 3 kids ready for a picnic when we noticed the 3 items from the order missing. They said they couldn't refund over the phone and when we went back 3 days later for a refund they said they wouldn't refund it, they would just make our order for us again LOL, what?!! My husband had to do quite a bit of talking before we eventually got our money back, but needless to say we will not be back. The pictures may look good, but those along with over reviews raving about taste are deceiving. Save your money and go to a different well known city burger joint :) read more
