This is a lovely hotel. We have stayed there numerous times, but the last 2 times, the hotel has had a receptionist who is so "uppity" and "snippy," that there won't be another time for us. We made reservations for our favorite room. We arrived after a long drive to find the restaurant closed. Talking down to me like I'm an insubordinate child, she said "the restaurant is always closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays." We have not stayed there mid-week prior to this visit, so I didn't realize that. I have a medical dog (10 pounds) who is not a service dog and not a comfort dog. We have his papers and an ID for him. He has always been welcome there with the exception of the 1 prior time we stayed there when she was there; and this time. The prior time there was another girl there who took over for her and settled us in. We handed her our credit card, and she insisted on seeing our identification to ensure we are not using a card that is not ours. I am semi-retired but when I was with the FAA I traveled a lot; including to foreign countries; but was never asked for my ID when I tendered a card. She examined it, slowly and deliberately, like she was an expert analyst, and that's when I had enough. I said we were not going to stay there and she said we would be charged because she needed 48 hours notice to cancel in order to receive a credit back to our card. Interestingly, we had made the reservations only 24 hours prior, so could not have given her 48 hours notice of cancellation. This woman is so unfriendly, snooty and overbearing, that I won't ever go back to the Saint James. She is not the Queen of England; but it's evident that she thinks she has like kind of stature; looking down upon me as a peasant. She is a hotel employee and I am a well-traveled, well-dressed, well-employed guest. The hotel stays have been a lot of fun. The food is wonderful. The other staff members are so kind and hospitable. I hope those of you who read this do not plan on staying when she is the only one there. She will ruin it for you also. read more

The St. James is always a delight - I've visited it several times through the years and spent an "interesting" evening in Mary's room. Apparently she haunts the room when women spend the night, but she left me alone. Their food is standard fare for a small town out in the middle of NM, good but not gourmet. It's the history and stories that make this a delightful place. I haven't enjoyed their patio in the summer, hope to someday soon - it looks like a fun place to spend an evening under the stars. read more

We went here on a road trip from Albuquerque with another couple. We all enjoyed our time at the hotel. Our waitress was very friendly & told us about some of her ghost experiences at the hotel. Our food was excellent & the service was prompt. We loved exploring the hotel, we didn't feel crowded by others, often being the only ones looking at the rooms. The history of the hotel is amazing & it was cool to see the bullet holes in the ceiling of the saloon & the names of famous western folks who once stayed there. Our pictures were interesting: 2 photos by 2 camera phones,, one had nothing, one had an orb in Poker Room. Another instance: friend & I took photo in hallway mirror, the corner of mine looked like a bun or hair of someone, my friends photo had a blue dot in same place. Not sure if I believe in ghosts but it made it fun, along with the guys trying to provoke TJ out of his room. We all want to come back & stay soon as work schedules allow. read more

St. James is a really interesting place to eat and stay. I went and are there and ordered a cheeseburger. It was really good. At my table we also ordered there homemade Mac and cheese which was also very delicious and promising. We did a tour of the hotel and it was really cool to learn who shot who in the mass shootings. We got to see all the old rooms people like Annie Oakley stayed in. We saw bullet holes and everything was super cool. I totally recommend to stay or eat at St. James. read more

What an amazing place. The staff was so wonderful and helpful. The rooms were amazing. Food was great. Bar was fun and vibrant. I can not recommend this place enough. Keep in mind that you aren't staying at a four Seasons. It's an old, amazing, historic hotel. And you get exactly what you would expect. I wish I knew the desk clerks name. She was telling us some haunting stories. We stayed in Buffalo Bills room. My friend stayed in Doc Holidays room and we stayed up till the wee hours of the night playing poker in the poker room and drinking whiskey. The most amazing "Wild West" experience I've had. During the summers of 2009, 2010, I frequented this bar more times then I care to count. Often times, hearing LAST CALL. It's a bar. With beer, and good bar food. The breakfast buffet is also good. Once I visited Cimarron over New Years and ate five or six meals in row here. I have to say, the food is pretty average. Though I do get cravings for buffalo burger with green chili and bacon every now and then. If you're on Philmont staff, this is the place to be. I never went to Cold Beer...this was closer and a little bit smoother around the edges. Good array of local microbrews. I miss the James. read more

Where else can you stay for under $100 where Buffalo Bill, Annie Oakley, Kit Carson, Frank & Jesse James, Wyatt Earp, and Billy the Kid all stayed? Only here. Ask to see the video about the hotel if you don't already know the history, it outlines coverage from Unsolved Mysteries and some other news coverage in regards to hauntings, ie, room 18. The staff is friendly, the town is quiet, and this is a cool historic place to stay if you're exploring New Mexico at all, a definite stop. The rooms themselves are not deluxe-- they're old. It's a historical place, that's the draw. You have to *get* that before you show up, otherwise, you might be disappointed. If you're just rolling through the town of Cimarron, I'd advise at least allotting 30 minutes to check out the ground floor open rooms. If no one is staying in them, you can peer past the velvet ropes and see where these bad ass dudes stayed. Cool. read more

This hotel is very creepy, spectacular, small town charmy, historic and all that. It's one of those historic hotels from the old west days. Well, we got what we went up there for. We started out dining in the bar, because the dining hall was packed. The food was alright. Then after dinner we went on a guided historic walk. We learned about all the hauntings that went on as well as historic facts. We went into the old jail which is really old like late 1800's old. That was too much for me. It was also still the town jail up until the 60's which was really creepy. (leaving out all the tour gems not to spoil it) After the tour we played ouija and many creepy things happened there. We then went to stake out more haunted areas and got really spooked. Not one of us could really sleep through the night. The next day we learned we had a "bad" room where spirits supposedly make a unrested stay for the guests. Lots of cool ghost stories. Look it up or just GO. Only a four or five hour drive from Denver. Totally fun and worth it. I'm sure in the summer there's probably more going on like horseback riding and things of that nature. You have to appreciate history and vintage to be at all comfortable here, but chances are you won't be comfortable anyways. Despite the nice inn keepers and quaint accommodations, the place was still a bit eerie; I know I didn't get much sleep. Try to get there before the sun goes down, driving the road out to the quiet town at night isn't fun, it's worrisome with the chances of hitting Bambi. Keep on drivin', keep on drivin', keep on drivin', almost there, keep on drivin'. It'll take you awhile to get to the St. James Hotel but that's why God invented mixed tapes and the travel version of Jenga. The trip is worth it (and quite scenic, I might add). In a country where anything older than 10 years is ripped down, it's nice to see some old stuff that keeps on keeping on. The staff was very nice to us as we peered around the first floor rooms that were open to see. They even suggested a video that explains the history of the hotel and covers the ghosts that are said to remain in the hotel. Unfortunately my date and I didn't have enough time in the schedule to stay here but I would've loved to have done so. Even if you can't stay the night, a 30 minute visit is definitely worth it. If you want Ritz Carlton-like rooms then go there; however, if you want a taste of the old Wild West and a potential ghost sighting or two, you can't beat the St. James. read more

I had the huevos rancheros for breakfast this morning. I ordered red and green with sunny side up eggs. The let me sub my hash browns for veggies, the staff was nice, and the eggs were cooked perfectly but that's about where the good part stops. The green chile tasted like it had a lot of thickener in it and the red, even though they said it was homemade, tasted out of a can. The staff came to check on me only when I was about half way done and then left me wondering what to do with the check for a good 10min. read more

Stayed in the "new section" for an evening then had breakfast. Bar area is good and breakfast was reasonably priced and filling. Staff is nice. Somewhat disappointed in the room for what I paid. Definitely setting prices based on limited availability of other nearby places to stay and the Scout trade as opposed to accommodation quality. We stayed at the St. James Hotel, while attending our annual Billy the Kid Outlaw Gang gathering. While we were in the area, we had two meals at the restaurant. Both of our meals were very good. Meal number one consisted of a chicken salad and a rueben and meal number two was a cheese omelet and biscuits and gravy with an egg and hash browns. The only problem was the initial seating by the hostess. Once we were actually seated service definitely improved. Our waitress at our breakfast was better than the waitress at our lunch. Went back over the summer. Whew! Some renovation. The dining area and bar are completely different as well as the outside patio area. The vibe of this place could best be described using back to the future 3...if Marty were a Shoneys going back into the past to save Doc. By this I mean, now you've got a small buffet with so-so food and portions and more crap on the walls now than you'd expect from some of the flairyiest restaurants I've ever been to. The new owners really are embracing the idea that the James is an interesting, historical place which historians seem to disagree upon. But, like Back to the future 3, despite the historical loops, and the rediculous costumes the waiters and bar staff have to wear, it's a pretty good place still. Food was good. Nicely kept historical building. I only stopped for breakfast, which was unfortunately disappointing. The waitresses were helpful and quick, but my biscuits and gravy were cold and nearly meatless. I loved our stay. The history of this hotel is interesting and the period furnishings makes it more intriguing. The staff, food and rooms were amazing. Tonya is so sweet and was very helpful; especially when I locked our room key on the bed and she had to use a master key to let us back in the room. Take a stroll through the hallways and look at the pictures and read the history of some the visitors from the old west days. The bar area is also a nice place to relax and visit, but I was disappointed that the original bar was sold some years back. The current bar is still neat and is also very old. The food is delicious and they have a really good salsa. The gristmill was closed during winter. We saw many mule deer and wild turkeys wandering the area near the hotel. Take a drive on Hwy 21 from Cimarron to Springer - there are hundreds of mules, mule deer and wild turkey. read more

My wife spent one night at the St. Jmes. We had a lovely dinner as well as a peaceful night's sleep there. Being that this is such an old hotel, we weren't expecting much, but after our visit, I could not be much more impressed. It was very clean and everything was in tip-top shape. I first saw the Saint James when we took a troop to Philmont Scout Ranch. When we passed through Cimarron on the way to Taos a few years later, I had to try it. I will rate it "A" for an interesting experience and historical content. Comfort is another story. Given the choice between a more modern room in the newer annex and a historical room, we chose the Jessie James room. On first impression the room was charming with antique and original furniture, bed frame and other appointments. However, I'm pretty sure Jessie slept on our mattress - Ouch! We are not into the paranormal but we did experience our own private haunting. At about dawn I was jarred out of bed by a loud squealing noise. It was the smoke detector on the 10' ceiling above the bed. I sniffed and stuck my head out into the hall but smelled nothing. I returned to bed and pulled the covers up and it went off again. When my feet hit the floor, it went off. As I lifted my legs to climb back in it went off again. That's when I thought "oh-oh - spooks!" When I mentioned our experience to the lady at the desk that morning I got one of those 'over-the-top-of-the-glasses' looks. I suspect she hears about this stuff from time to time. In looking back, the bed and the room were far from comfortable. But we are very glad we stayed in Jessie's room. It provided a life-long memory. read more

I had the green chili smothered burger...very tasty. My wife had the JAMES burger...well liked. French fries very good. My buddy had a BLT, he gave it a thumbs up. I had read about this place before we headed over to Cimmaron from AngelFire. There really is not too much to see in Cimmaron, but if you are in the area, definitely go here. The hotel is really beautiful and is preserved Old West--rooms that you can see on the first floor for free where Jesse James, Bat Masterson and others stayed. The saloon is really interesting too with all of the neat things on the walls and the bullet holes in the ceiling. The service was outstanding at the restaurant and the front desk/lobby staff were very nice and helpful answering questions about the area. The food is good and reasonably priced-not fancy, but a nice, basic meal with alternatives to New Mexican food like hamburgers, shrimp, and a salad bar that is OK. The soup of the day that they had was good. We went for lunch. The ambiance is great and you can walk around the patio area and just enjoy the outside area. It looks like it would be fun to go there for drinks in the evening. If you have lunch here and have time, the staff can tell you the hwy to go a few miles and see Ted Turner's bison/buffalo herds - really amazing if you have never seen them. read more

While on vacation this summer in northern NM, we drove over to Cimarron through the beautiful Cimarron State Park. The drive is breath taking, if you've never done it. Since we are in northern NM every summer, we've made that drive many times and have seen deer, elk, wild turkeys and even a bear! Anyway, to get back on topic, this review is about the restaurant in the St. James. We hadn't been there for a couple of years, and what a pleasant surprise! Last time we were there it was tiny, dingy, and dark, with a limited menu. This time after a very tasteful expansion and remodel, it was a bright, pleasing place to enjoy dinner. The remodel has respected the historic character of the building. There is a beautiful and inviting patio that did not have food service, but apparently they have live entertainment and bar service at night. We weren't there late enough to see this, however. Regarding the food, the menu has been expanded, but it's not overwhelming. If you're a fan of salad bars, this one was better than average. The appetizers were mostly fried, so personally I wasn't a fan. We ordered fried green beans - they were OK. Honestly I can't remember what is on the appetizer menu, so we may have just chosen poorly. The dinner menu had NM style Mexican food, steaks, basic seafood (shrimp / salmon / tilapia), some delicious looking grilled chicken, and what 3 out of 4 of us ordered - rainbow trout. The trout did not disappoint. Dredged in flour, perfectly seasoned and grilled, it was delicate, fresh and delicious! The person in our party who ordered the fillet was pleased with her choice - perfectly done medium rare, nicely seasoned. We all got a big pile of haricot verts, steamed and buttery - yummy! None of us ordered dessert - there was no point! Treat yourself - go for a beautiful drive, enjoy the history at the old mill museum in town, then have a surprisingly delicious dinner in a sleepy little town in northern New Mexico, maybe a cerveza on the patio.
