So, are a lot of places, all around the world and they give a tiny sample just to know if you like it. To say no samples because it's homemade is totally behind he times and an uhhhhhh what did you just say to me moment? Cool, no samples. Please, stop saying that's the reason why. Just post a sign. No samples. Limited supplies. We ordered blindly - hazelnut truffle and peanut butter chocolate. Tiny portions, like the size of a golf ball. I couldn't really tell one from the other. I was lured by the smell of waffle cones baking... Being vegan in a not-so-vegan-friendly place, I wasn't expecting any sorbet options when I followed my nose to the shop. But they actually had 5 or 6 options! I was so happy. There are a lot of traditional dairy flavors too, including passion fruit. They also have the standard toppings, and of course, those waffle cones. So I got some passion fruit sorbet and it hit the spot after a late lunch at The Tap Room and a day of snorkeling in the national park. I enjoyed it on the car ferry back to St Thomas. But, keep in mind that this place is CASH ONLY. They need to invest in one of those iPad card pay systems the food trucks have at home. read more

Rather disappointed. I was drawn in by the smell of the homemade waffle cones, which were actually delicious but it stopped there. The ice cream was mediocre at best. I got the salted caramel which tasted like artificial caramel flavoring. I ate a small amount, then dumped out the icecream and just ate the cone. My kids got the funfeti...or something like that which was basically vanilla icecream with colored sprinkles. The ice cream tasted like it had thawed and was refrozen because it had ice crystals in it. My young kids who will eat almost anything sweet didn't want to eat it. I don't think they offer samples because if they did no one would buy the icecream...I certainly would have passed if I had tasted it first. read more

What a change! When we last visited St John 4 years ago this was the only place in Cruz bay that served ice cream and it was great. This visit however the person serving had a bad attitude both times we went. When asked if we could have a taste of one of the flavors he said "we don't do that". And when we asked for a cover he said we don't have any for 2 scoops. He suggested we but a pint. He begrudgingly gave one of the drink cups with a top. Also the scoop size is much smaller. I would not go there as there are now other places to get ice cream and you could even buy a Pint of Ben & Jerry's at the store for less than he charges for 4 scoops (2 each for my wife and I). The ice cream was worth the wait. We may have waited close to 20 minutes. There was only one guy working, but he was fast. The line was simply long. My husband and I went back to Scoops AGAIN for the 3 night, spent 8 dollars on a cone (Ice Cream+2 Flavors+Waffle cone) x2= 16...and this is over 3 days...that's 48.00$ on ice cream...we wanted to know what the honey lavender tasted like so we asked if we could have a small little taste- The guy said "No, company policy that we can allow tastes" REALLY? You are charging 8.00per cone and I can't taste the flavor first... That just seems like bad business. Even from 100 feet away I could tell St. John Scoops was going to be great. The smell of fresh waffle cones wafting through the air drew me in, and with a double scoop of cookies and cream I was hooked. We spent 4 nights in STJ and visited this place every day (4 times) after a day at the beach. Victoria from Cruz Bay Boutique Hotel recommended it. There are a number of places that serve ice cream on the walk to this place, although I don't believe any of them made a homemade waffle cone like Scoops does. You can smell them from down the street. The ice cream is made in small batches, and you can add toppings. I tried the grasshopper (vanilla with crushed mint chocolate cookies), butterfinger, cookies and cream and vanilla bean. You have to have the waffle cone - best I've ever had. I also enjoyed adding fudge and caramel to mind. You get two scoops ($5) in the waffle cone ($2), topping ($1). It can get pricey but a delicious treat while on vacation. My husband and I stopped have stopped by twice during our week here. Both times we had waffle cones; I had spiced chai and passionfruit, and he had cowboy coffee and painkiller (with rum). I loved both of my flavors- distinct, specific and really flavorful . My husband thought the coffee flavor was good, but didn't have a distinct coffee flavor. He really enjoyed the painkiller with fresh nutmeg grated on top. They were all homemade and the waffle cones were delicious. I was a little initially a little disappointed that I could not try a sample since I wasn't sure what the passionfruit would be like. However the guy serving us explained that he would be happy to replace it with a new flavor if I wasn't happy. Seems fair enough in my book. The only reason we didn't rate this 5 stars is that prices ($7 for a waffle cone with 2 scoops) are a little high for an ice cream cone. Definitely worth a stop after a day at the beach! read more
