Only tried the scones here, but every time I get one I would enjoy them very much. Hardish outside yet soft and doughy on the inside. Perfect with a cup of black coffee. Prices seem pretty reasonable for fresh bread and baked goods. Will definitely try other items when I get the chance. read more

This place is a neighborhood-based, honest, non-profit-run bakery. I must admit - when I heard this place is a non-profit bakery, what came to my mind was a homey bake-sale level place but I was SOOOO wrong!!!!!!! St John's Bakery is a good solid artisan bakery!! I arrived shortly after they opened for the day, but there was already a lineup of people outside sniffing the yeasty aroma in the air, waiting for their turn to be served. They seemed to know each other, creating a very good neighborhood vibe. It was Wednesday, and I was looking for their famous Cilantro-olive sourdough but I learned that they are available only on weekends. I was also hoping to buy Walnut Raisin loaf but it was not on the shelf when I was there. Maybe I was too early? So I bought classic sourdough - I loved it. When I cut its hearty crust open, a pleasant sourdough aroma was released. The bread was truly tasty - chewy and nicely tangy - I enjoyed the good depth of its flavor. I sliced it at home and found that it tastes exceptionally great when slightly (really, really slightly) toasted. It adds an extra thin crispy layer on the surface and enhances the flavor. Cranberry scone was also great! It had a lot of cranberries and pumpkin seeds, and refreshing orange peels inside. The right amount of coarse sugar was sprinkled on top adding extra crunchy texture and sweetness. You can enjoy all the different textures, flavors, and festive colors - the taste was also very good and balanced. I thought it is perfect for Thanksgiving!? Toronto, especially the east side has no shortage of good/trusted bakeries, but no wonder many people prefer to come to St. John's Bakery than any of the other bakeries. Everything is fresh on the premises, and high-quality. Most importantly - their mission is very well carried out, attracting people and bringing in community support - an impressively well-organized social enterprise! Hidden gem of a bakery just off of Broadview & Queen. It's a quaint place but they have a bunch of selections of sourdough bread (some items are only available on Saturdays like the walnut raisin & olive - wish I knew this before i came on a Tuesday). I ended up picking up the whole wheat sourdough presliced and the bread was very fluffy. Also got a few other things like the multigrain sourdough, few scones , crossaints and cookies but haven't gotten around to trying these treats yet:) looking forward to the next bite read more

This bakery is Toronto's hidden gem of all things delicious. This lovely bakery is situated in Riverside so it's not too far from the downtown core. The recipes are old and healthy with no weird hidden ingredients for you to shake your head at. You won't find any over the top cupcakes or cakes loaded with sugar. The baked goods here are wholesome and is the closest you can get to home-made. If you are a cookie fanatic like myself, the most amazing ginger cookie resides here. Soft and chewy with no overpowering molasses or ginger, you will chomp down on this cookie so fast that you will realize only 3/4 done that there are chopped candied ginger pieces inside. If I could give this place more than 5 stars, I would give it 10. read more

It is a depressing fact that you will be hard-pressed to find anything that resembles real bread in Toronto or even throughout most of Canada. Luckily, St John's Bakery produces what can be considered real bread. You will taste the difference once you try it. I first found out about St. John's Bakery while shopping at the Big Carrot on Danforth. My sister was with me and recommended I try the Olive and Cilantro Sourdough Loaf (Pre-cut). It cost just over $6 and I was hesitant because of the price. I took it home and made myself a tofurky sandwich. It was delicious! I even had a slice on its own with Earth Balance butter. So, I decided to research St. John's since they had their website printed on their packaging (www.stjohnsbakery.com) This artisan bakery has an amazing history and inspiring mission which you can find out on their website. They help the community through the use of preservative free, organic and natural ingredients and bakery hires refugees and people in need of help. Also, I found out my aunt lives around the corner from the bakery. So everytime I go visit, I stop by. On Saturday mornings, there's nothing like walking in and the air is wafting with the aroma of freshly baked breads. I usually buy one of their warm out of the oven scones (I always get their Cheddar Chive). A Dark Horse coffee (2 mins walk) + St. John scones = Heavenly. Do yourself a favour and try St. John's Bakery. You'll be helping the community while enjoying the breads and sweets. read more

This is an odd spot for a great artisan bakery. I wouldn't have even noticed it had I not passed by this route on a regular basis. They use organic ingredients so will even please those who believe in healthy eating and a healthy dessert (Gasp! IMO a healthy dessert goes by the name of fruit!) I have tried their scones which were good and the shortbread was ranked as one of the best in city by the connoisseurs of this simple in terms of ingredients yet hard to master sweet. I haven't yet tried their claim to fame i.e. their breads and will surely pick up one soon. They have set days for certain breads so make sure to check in before hand. Special mention here for their dedication to quality is that they discontinued making the shortbread when according to them they were unable to source the quality ingredients/makers. This is surely something that ought to be admired when most retailers are looking for shortcuts. 4 solid stars and I will be back again. read more

I love baked goods, especially fresh breads. Toronto has been on this Artisan bread kick since I moved here, and although I love it most of the time, there are days where I just want plain, fresh, flavorful whole wheat bookends on my meatwiches. St John's Bakery doesn't have a ton of fancy pants breads (although the call themselves an artisan bakery). They make all their breads and sweets with organic ingredients and they have a bunch of different sourdoughs and whole wheat. my Favorite thing.... is that they have HALF SIZED LOAVES [in some breads] which is AWESOME because as a 1-person apartment occupant, I can never eat a whole loaf of bread before it gets all crusty and gross. So big time thumbs up for that. It's also run as part of the St John's Mission outreach program to create meaningful work opportunities in the community. read more

St.John's bakery, St.John's church :) Great bread, nice sour-dough varieties, but danm expensive :( For me a great place to buy loaves if I'm having a dinner party, perhaps serving up some cheese or a nice hearty stew. But for my every day use, better off buying Dimpflmeier. I wrote about his place because I really want to give as much support to the small artisan shops. Of course it's tough to buy from them everyday, unless you have a fat pocket book :) But like I mentioned, great bread, great quality. I love St. John's Bakery in Riverside for so many reasons starting with the amazing baked goods produced there -- especially my most favourite and absolutely delicious olive and cilantro boule to the bread pudding with pears to the variety of amazing scones. I recently tried a parmesan one and was in heaven; so flaky and buttery...My mouth is watering as I write about it. Aside from baking up some delectible treats, the premise of this state-of-the-art organic bakery is to give a hand up to the individuals working there as they get their lives back on track. Hands down the best bakery in Toronto. Try any of their sourdoughs. The cilantro and olive loaf is fantastic. Their recipes were handed down from secretive 14th century monks, who apparently did not make cupcakes or nanaimo bars. So if you want a sugar overload - keep walking (in shame) as you will not find it here. I may have embellished a bit on the monks. read more

As part of my normal day to day life, I am up by 7 in the morning to begin my morning devotions. To my surprise yesterday morning I found a loaf of bread sitting on my kitchen table. No doubt from my sister. The loaf appeared old base on touch and smell but I tried it anyways. Didn't love it but it did push me to find the bakery during my bike ride. When I got to st John's I thought the outside sign was kind of cute but didn't grab my attention (In fact I didn't notice it till I left!) I went inside and wow, the heat and the smell was amazing! Felt like a real bakery. Sadly everything else about the place was anything but. All the bread seem hard. When asked I was told all the bread on the store front was baked the afternoon and night before! Really!? It turned me off so fast once I heard that. The cookies on display were nothing special, I can bake shortbread and ginger cookies at home. In the end I got the banana loaf which was really good and dense. But for what I paid, no thank you. read more

We hit all our favorite spots and on the final day we awoke hung over and looking for delicious baked goods. Amy's husband suggested bread and scones from St John's Bakery. So we shook our tight booties on down and entered the shop. Our server was a guy named Sean who was nice enough. However, he was the only positive thing about the place. The scones were so dry they were nearly inedible. And the bread was rather tasteless. Of course, the shop was pretty dirty so we didn't really want to risk eating it only to fall victim to drippy butt and the food's attempt to escape back out from whence it came. So after a brief debate outside the shop we decided not to finish eating the baked goods we had purchased. They went into the trash. And we went to a different kind of place altogether (mmm, canapés!) Skip St. John's and go for canapés instead. read more

St. John's olive loaf was a complete revelation for me. I had sworn off bread because of a very restrictive, self-imposed diet, but one day while in Fresh and Wild, through some stroke of luck or fate, I picked up the loaf and thought, what the hell, a couple slices won't kill me. But - hear me now! - it did! This olive loaf just slayed me. I had never tasted such delicious, flavorful, moist yet perfectly crusty bread. I was in seventh heaven. Maybe it was the months of dieting deprivation, but this bread made me deliriously, incandescently happy. It reminded me like a shock how wonderful, nourishing and comforting good food can be. Needless to say, I am off my diet and I dream of St. John's bread weekly. Make that daily. Make that right this minute. The loaves are indeed more expensive than other brands and bakeries, but I like to purchase sourdough bread directly from St John's because it is made with minimal ingredients, is preservative-free and fresh to boot. Best Bread in Toronto. I make a point of getting here as early as I can, as they have a tendency to be sold out of a lot by the end of the day. This shows the popularity of the place in the neighborhood. Everything I have bought here has been top notch. This time I bought a loaf of regular whole wheat bread, nothing special, and it still managed to blow me away. It was perfectly dense and full of flavour. Wow, what's happened, St John's? St John's Bakery used to have very delicious breads and baked goods. They've hardly ever been consistent in quality but they were at least delicious. But over the last six months or so, something has taken a turn for the worst. I've stopped getting scones altogether. Once upon a time I'd have said that they had the best ones on the east side. Lately they've tasted like baking soda. The taste, the texture, the overall quality of them have just suffered. If that were not bad enough, the other day I got a baguette on my way home from work. The darkest one I could find was so light I thought it was undercooked. Baguettes should have a nice dark golden color to its crispy (practically crunchy) crust. That's what makes it a baguette. What I got was like a dinner roll. A long thin dinner roll. I'm not one to complain but the quality of St John's has gone downhill so much lately that I've been moved to post this, my first review ever. I probably won't go back since Toronto has so many fine bakeries and I'll probably be sure to suggest one of them to my friends over St John's. read more

I've never been to the actual bakery, I buy their bread at Strictly Bulk at Bloor and Ossington. It is delivered Tuesdays and Fridays and usually sells out by the end of the day. My favourite is the Celtic Loaf (organic multi-grain sour dough). It is expensive but worth it for the quality of the bread, I also appreciate the bakery's social mission. The bread freezes well - sacrilege, I know, but I am a single person!! - so a loaf will last me for several weeks. read more

There is nothing like good fresh bread and St John's Mission Bakery is the place to get it. It's more expensive that a typical loaf of bread but it helps the Mission's community programs. And they produce some of the best bread that I have ever tasted. For example, their olive cilantro sourdough - I don't like any of these components on their own but St John's bakes them into the most amazing loaf. I've heard so much about this bakery and was excited when I finally had the chance to visit. I was sorely disappointed. First off, the place is filthy! I get that they are attached to a mission but that's no excuse for the dinginess. They sell food for goodness sake! There were stains on the walls and the floor obviously hadn't been swept or mopped all morning. Not the kind of place that instills confidence in the baked goods sold there. I got a scone to eat and a loaf of olive bread. The scone was dry and tasted like baking soda. The bread didn't live up to what I would expect from what is sold as artisanal bread. I first discovered this bakery by way of a referral from Mad Dog Café, they use their bread and it is amazing (no preservatives). It taste so good, I asked them where they got it and this is where they sent me. The bread I like is the Celtic Loaf. I have since dropped in a few times and I do have to say the selection is very limited and not a place I would frequent often for that reason. How ever, if you want to die and go to heaven I would encourage you to try one of their chocolate croissants. They are smaller in size than most places but they are so full of dark rich chocolate. This makes them almost health food! I will drop by for that reason alone. From what I understand this place seems to do a lot of good. The people they hire are newcomers etc... what a great opportunity to provide someone a place to learn on the job. You get great bread and help someone out in one swoop. Several years ago, I was hosting a charitable organization event at Fort York. The menu consisted of homemade chilli con carne with buns. Just before the event, we cut the fresh-several-hours-ago nuggets of delight. The folks seemed to enjoy the chilli, but when they started to bite into the buns, they stopped chewing long enough to look up and see other eaters showing the same surprise. We had bought 5 buns per person (not everyone showed up for the 2-per-person event). There was lots of chilli left, but no buns. read more

Probably the best bread in town - and certainly in the top 5 bakeries. All organic, always fresh and a wide variety to choose from. The also have tasty deserts, like banana bread and brioche and cookies and more. Proceeds go to charity, so there's a bit of a premium on the price, but absolutely worth it. read more
