What a sight it is flying into St. John's International Airport! It's surrounded by green and blue. Once you land, you can feel how small the airport is. There's one terminal. It takes only a few minutes to walk from one end to the other, which is where both restrooms are. As you walk, you'll see a few stores and restaurants like Tim Hortons. You'll also pass vending machines with snacks and even electronics thanks to Best Buy. There's plenty of places to sit and one long table to work from with many outlets. Gayle and I flew into YYT from Montreal on the front end of our Newfoundland adventure and departed 5 days later via a non stop to Toronto. Both flights were on Air Canada. The St. John's Airport is on the smaller side for a Capital airport and reminded me of Reno or Baton Rouge in terms of size and easy walkability. On the Arrival side, baggage claim (and doing the rental car paperwork while I waited was straightforward and timely. However, the actual walk to the rental car lot was quite a schlep, and it's probably worse in the winter. On the Departure side, Security had the right combination of firm, efficient, and helpful. The latter was key as Gayle inadvertently carried a number of greater than 100 ml lotions and liquids through Security. She was nicely and patiently offered the chance to go back and have them checked, which she did. And Air Canada was nice enough the check that 2nd bag for free. Past Security, there's really only one restaurant/bar (YellowBelly) plus a newsstand, a few local crafts shops, and an interesting vending machine that dispensed frozen local seafood choices. The gates are all in one row, so getting my steps by going up and down worked out well. My most interesting purchase was for an issue of a local magazine called Downhome. Our Air Canada gate turned into a bit of a scrum due to all the people in a relatively small space. And when they offered earlier seating if I checked my carry on bag, I took it. I almost forgot to mention that YYT is well located within St. John's and it's super easy to drive out one day and back in the other. There's also a petrol station at the entrance for filling up your rental car. I hope to experience YYT again, either for another take on Newfoundland or maybe one of the smaller planes that go to Labrador and other points North. read more

It's a nice and efficient "small city" airport. My family and I arrived 2.5 hours before our flight, which evidently was way too much. We ended up walking around the check-in area for about 45 minutes before deciding to go thru security and see what's on the other side. Security check only took 8-10 minutes. Easy peasy. On the other side, there are a couple of bars, but what caught my attention was a seafood freezer stall. Yes, you can buy frozen local seafood here that you can take on your flight home! Reasonable prices too which is a bonus. They'll even pack it for you so that you can fit it in your carry-on, or in a easy to go tote bag (small charge for it). It's not a huge airport and there aren't too many connections here, but if you end up needing to use this airport, rest assured you won't be disappointed by its offerings. read more

This is a pretty simple airport to navigate; only one terminal so it is fairly straightforward. We ran into a bit of a line at security though since there is only one checkpoint, but that is why you ensure you arrive with plenty of time before the flight. They have your standard options for pre-flight snacks as well as some souvenir options. The gates and waiting areas were clean and spacious. read more

Given that AirCanada asks passengers to be here / hours for a domestic flight and 3 hours before an international flight, why is everything closed before security and next to everything closed past security? There are like 8 flights on the board from 1pm to 3pm, but the only good past security doesn't open until 30 minutes before boarding the first round of flights - and they have a sign out front telling folks to allow at least 30 minutes for food. And which idiotic planner had the brilliant idea of sticking the washrooms at the very far ends of the terminal with nothing in the middle. read more

As much as I'm going to rave about the St. John's airport, it frankly won't be good enough. After having travelled through some of the most congested airports in North America, and more importantly, through security screenings at said airports, St. John's is quite literally a breath of fresh air. The flight out that I had was during the late morning hours on a Tuesday, so it wasn't exactly a busy time, but I don't think that made much of a difference. Upon getting my boarding pass printed and dropping off my checked bag, it took me less than a minute to make it through security. Once into the terminal, there aren't a lot of food choices, but there's enough for you to get by. More importantly, the restaurants and seating areas at each gate are modern and clean, so there are no worries there. Being that it's St. John's, there is plenty of seating around the gates, so you have plenty of room to spread out, and there isn't anyone fighting you for an outlet to charge a device. Going through an airport is almost never a relaxing experience, but that's exactly what you'll get when you fly out of St. John's. read more

The good: 1. It's a small airport so there's no line at security, you go right through. 2. You can't get lost trying to find your gate, there's only 4 or 5 of them. 3. There's ample seating in the boarding lounge. 4. There's a decent number of electrical receptacles so you can charge your phone or laptop if needed. 5. All of the staff I encountered were very friendly and helpful. The not so good: 1. Once you pass through security there isn't much for amenities, just a coffee counter that serves Tim Hortons coffee and $8 cafeteria sandwiches and a small Relay store. 2. It's a small airport so there isn't a lot to pass the time if you don't have a book or something to amuse yourself with. 3. It's a little confusing where to drop your rental car. You kind of just have to find an employee in the parking area to take the car off your hands. read more

It's quite small in comparison to other airports I've been to (closest one I live to is Pearson). I found this airport to be very clean and modern with lots of amenities including good areas for eating and sitting. It's bright and cheerful and the washroom facilities were clean. We had no problem navigating through the airport to get out to the rental area for our car and then the parking lot. The only challenge we ran into was leaving the airport at the end of the trip to head home and my mom had items confiscated that weren't confiscated on our way into the airport. It was quite confusing to say the least and my mom was disappointed to have lost those items. The hotel we stayed in was close to the airport which was great for us and very convenient. I really enjoyed my stay in Newfoundland so would absolutely be happy to return to this airport. read more

Small but good. This international airport is so small that there are only 8 gates and the last 4 gates are jammed into one side of the airport. So on the upside, it is difficult to get lost in this airport and if there is a gate change, you do not have to go very far. Another upside is that there are very little lines for security - with the exception of holidays of course, but even then it isn't too bad. The airport recently expanded their parking lot so there's more room to park to see your loved ones off. Oh! And there are rocking chairs in the lounges! The downside is that there is limited room in the airport. When it does get busy, it isn't unusual to see people sitting on the ledges by the windows. In addition there are not a lot of amenities. If you are particular about what you eat, you are not in luck. In addition, because there are limited amenities you definitely have to bring your own entertainment. Maybe I gave St. John's airport a high score because I just love coming back to Newfoundland. Either way, the airport is one place that does not cause me any stress. read more

Reviewing an airport is like reviewing a bus ride. You give them your ticket, you board, get to the destination, hope you still have your bag and didn't get left somewhere. The airport is relatively small. Has a coffee shop downstairs, a place to grab a snack or magazine upstairs. It's tidy, has chairs and a bathroom. That's pretty much all I need. I wish I could wax eloquent on it. I just wanted to see my family or get home. It's simply another airport. read more

This is a decently sized airport that is supposed to double by 2020, according to the billboard on the side of the road. A Holiday Inn Express is within walking distance, which is always a plus. All the major rental car companies are represented, and the parking is on-site. The flights are mostly Air Canada, but a decent number of international non-stop flights are available as well. Airport is two levels, with no priority lane for Star Alliance Gold. read more

A decent smaller sized airport! On my trip I believed it to be a bit crowded! Although there is a nice kiosk with some "Newfie" ware. It would be nicer if they had a few more shops peddling the food and gifts of Newfoundland! Airports these days are shopping malls as you have a captive audience! I had a car paid for with Hertz and when I went to pick up and pay the remaining balance of $53 they wouldn't accept cash or debit only a credit card which i didn't bring. The airport is pretty small & crowded. After our flight landed we needed to use the restrooms. Ladies restroom smelled bad & wasn't very clean. Hubby says men's restroom was clean though. Not terribly impressed right now. Hopefully it will be different on our outbound flight. read more

Only place in Canada where people CHEER when they land. So for this alone you gotta give the place props. Or jets. Or helicopters... ;-) Not a large airport, by any stretch of the imagination, but the departures set up I found a bit confusing. Signage seems to indicate that the departures is on the second floor. Well it is, but you have to check yourself and your luggage in on the main floor. The self-check in kiosks were not cooperating when we checked in so we had to get the luggage confusion straightened out at the desk. Once we'd done so, it was up to the second floor and through security. Once inside, get as comfortable as you can in airport seating and wait for your plane. No gigantic selection of stores, not a lot of area to walk and explore, and you are leaving one of the most beautiful places in the world, so you are bound to be unhappy. But it's not the airport's fault. read more

Warning - once you go through customs there are no restaurants just a small tim hortons and a small snack shop. I thought I would go through early and grab some food before my flight but that was not the case. Otherwise this airport is clean and quick to get through. read more

There's always a sigh of relief from passengers when they land on the strip awaiting their trip's final leg. There seems to be a pattern here of very hard and sudden landings at the airport which are enough to make me grab on the arm rest and close my eyes and hope the plane isn't about to burst into flames before we even get off the aircraft lol. The thing I like about this place is that it's pretty quick to get checked in and be on your way. There's no lines really and the staff is very nice. Once you pass through security, you're stuck with a small Tim Horton's and another small clothing store. The rest of the space is just seats and waiting for them to call your name. This airport is always a sign of conflicting emotions for me. I'm happy when I get to come back and visit but then I am saddened leaving all of this clean air, greenery, and wildlife. Not to mention there is one road on the island - it can't get much better than that methinks. read more

Worst marked airport. No signs at the rental car drop off to indicate where to drop the keys to your car. No restaurant once you go through security only a tiny Tim Hortons with one employee doing everyone. Packaged sandwich was made with dried out bread, cold drink was warm. read more

Wonderful people. Treat visitors well. Especially after long flights with delays...or while waiting for your flight. Some of the larger centres could send there staff here for a few lessons on how to treat the exhausted traveller well. read more

The airport is nice sized and has a good amount of food options but I was dropping my sister to the airport yesterday and had to park and I noticed that u have to pay to get in to the parking lot and there was only 1 spot left and they where still selling the tickets for people to waist there money ( we where lucky and got that spot) . When we where leaving we seen there where 2 lines to pay your parking and get out of the airport parking lot but because the lines are so long we could not see what the lines where for and ended up getting in the wrong line and having to try to exit the line when we where half way in it and many other people where 2 there should be signs further back to tell u what the lines are for , but even through all this almost everyone was being kind and understanding to everyone's problems with the awful lines and where very calm , nobody was stressful until we got to the box to pay out ticket we never had enough change out and had to get some more out of my purse as I reached in my purse for my wallet the man in the box said very rudely "hurry up " then I pulled out my wallet and he said it again "miss u need to hurry up " I was moving at a fast pAste and I was only get my goddamm wallet to get out of there then I was telling him I was trying to get the change as I was getting it , then he claimed rudely that " the line is long and we had to hurry " but the thing was we where doing this as fast as we could and other people in front of us where complaining about him to this was on Saturday at 2:30 and he was an old man with white hair and he was working in the box where you pay debit or change I strongly feel the air port should check your workers because for people entering Newfoundland and getting off a plane don't want to deal with rude people read more
