A couple of months ago I took my friend St. Joseph ER because she was having severe stomach pain and it was the only place nearby that was open at night. They took all of her information including insurance. They said we had to wait for a doctor to come before any tests could be ordered. When he finally does show up he says he is not going to do anything for her because it looks like she's not dying. WOW! I had to take my friend home to continue suffering until morning when a local clinic opened. Once there, right away they ordered tests to examine her stomach. A few weeks later my friend received a huge co-payment bill from the hospital for them doing absolutely nothing for her. read more

This review is based on my experience in the emergency department of the hospital. I came into this ER 8am on a Fri morning and was surprised to be the only patient waiting. Registration is fairly quick, I recall only one thing I had to sign and they did ask for my ID. The individuals in reception were pleasant and friendly. They don't make you explain to them on the spot infront of everyone else the reason for your visit, which I did appreciate for my privacy. Within 10 minutes at the most, I was taken back by an RN into a room. She took my BP, asked general questions about my condition, etc. After she left, it took about 15 mins more or less until the doctor came and attended to me. My issue was much worse than I thought, and I ended up having a small procedure done. Overall, I am satisfied with the level of care and attention I received here. The Dr was great, I felt he was trustworthy, encouraging, and thorough from start to finish. The one negative thing I will say is that I wasn't given anything for pain after the procedure. The Dr mentioned a couple of times an injection which would help with the pain and swelling, but after he left, it never happened. I should have asked the nurses that came afterwards but it honestly slipped my mind and I do accept fault for that. They gave me oral antibiotics and a prescription for more and I then I was basically discharged. I was there for not even 2 hours which I'd say is very impressive. I know there are a lot of negative reviews with the ER dept of this hospital, but I'm grateful for all the medical personnel who are doing their job well. I took ibuprofen after coming home and already I'm feeling much better. read more

I am currently waiting in this hospital. Seems like that is all I've done here since I walked in at 4pm yesterday to ER & its 10:30am right now. They've mis-spelled name, which resulted in lab not processing my blood work, took X-rays that were invalid due to wrong angles then blamed it on my large frame (192lbs, 6ft), took 2 more X-rays. Doc recommended me to stay overnight for observation but I was never hooked back up to the machines after my last X-ray. All while the staff was looking at social media, laughing & giggling outside of my room. 5 hours later (no nurse came in to check). I tried to connect my heart monitor, bp machine, oxygen levels myself but I didn't know how to turn on the main machine. I asked an administrative staff to come & help me. 2 hours later I asked them to let me go because nothing was happening. I got the nurse telling me how important it was for me to stay. They took me from ER to CDU at 11:00pm. The CDU nurse was very kind & sweet. There were no meals available and I was famished since last I ate was about 11 hours ago. I got a turkey sandwich. I was told that my test will be run between 8 & 10am. All night the AC unit ran very cold & loud. I finally saw a doc at 7:30am. I was also told to dress up & get ready for my test. I waited in my room till 10am & no one came. I finally went outside & raised my concerns with the staff. That is when I was told that one of the tests were cancelled by the doc. I asked got upset that I wasn't informed. That is when they took me for the other test and this is where I'm sitting, waiting & writing this review from. In the meantime, my primary physician called and couldn't believe that a day later, I was still waiting in this hospital for a simple test. DONOT COME TO THIS HOSPITAL IF YOU WANT YOUR HEALTH TO BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY SPECIALLY FOR ANY EMERGENCY NEEDS. Yelp should implement negative rating system so that I can't give them a single star. A chain is only as strong as its weakest link! I think the weakest link in this hospital's chain is the CEO. On a Sunday I needed to get in contact with the chemo department of the hospital. After multiple calls, long waits taking an hour, I finally was able to talk to the 'operator'. I asked what was going on. Found out the Emergency room operator was taking hospital calls that day. I asked to speak to her supervisor, who turned out to be an Emergency room RN. Of course I complained. NOW we all know emergency rooms are very busy. The intake person there is very busy. This person is not trained to be the hospital operator. This person did not know, nor did the RN, the Chemo department is not open on weekends. The folks who work at this hospital are wonderful. I have written many complementary notes about them, made many calls. This is my first complaint. GET SOMEONE WHO KNOWS HOW TO OPERATE A CLASS A HOSPITAL. THIS GUY IS MORE INTERESTED IN OUTWARD APPEARANCES THAN PATIENT CARE OR STAFF SUPPORT. PROFIT IS NOT REASON ENOUGH TO HAVE AN UNTRAINED PERSON DOING A JOB THAT REQUIRES TRAINING. read more

This comment is regarding a short stay surgery experience in 2017. My instructions were to arrive at 11AM for a 2 PM surgery. Nothing to eat or drink after midnight on the previous day. I did cheat however, and have a cup of water at 6AM, as I did not want to be too dehydrated for the IV insertions. A very nice nurse assisted me into a room, announcing that she would be my nurse, and then disappeared for over an hour. By 1 PM another nurse announced that she would be my nurse. By 2 PM, I still had nothad the IV inserted, and had been told they were running late. All the while, dehydration was progressing and in another hour when the second nurse tried to find a vein for the IV it was not possible without calling in another nurse with heating pads for my arm and extra procedures used when the patient is dehydrated. I think it was well after 4 when I was wheeled into surgery and was soon anesthetized. The surgery went well, but I noticed a lot of amnesia for weeks after, and to this day, 8 months later, This was quite different from a similar surgery I had the previous year, which had been scheduled for morning and proceeded on time. IVs were inserted with no difficulty. Upon awaking from this 2016 surgery, I was awake, my memory was normal immediately and I noticed no long term effects. I have since learned that patients may suffer more side effects from anesthesia if it is administered when they are dehydrated, which I was. I believe that management should become aware of this and adjust the cutoff times for drinking water based upon what hour of the day the surgery is scheduled, or allow time for hydration with IV fluids before drugs are administered. One size fits all seems to be the norm, however, at this short stay surgical unit. As a patient I am afraid to question medical professionals as they are working on me, as I know that every person who helped me had my best interest and complete recovery in mind, but the hours were passing and the surgery had to begin. I now warn friends about the dangers of anesthesia drugs on elderly dehydrated patients. I am hoping that this hospital will be able to correct this problem for other patients. read more

St. Joseph Hospital is a great medical facility with very knowledgeable, professional and compassionate staff. Two of my family members recently had serious heart problems and needed both emergency services, ICU and cardiac care. Earlier this month, the emergency staff saved my mom's life and last year they prevented my dad from having a possible heart attack. Now both are doing perfectly well and my family and I are so grateful to everyone who cared for them. We are incredibly fortunate to have such quality health care services in our rural area like those provided at St. Joseph Hospital. read more

I have made two emergency visits to St. Joseph's - one for a dog bite that was severe and was bleeding profusely, and this last visit for excruciating neck spasms that occurred every 10 to 15 seconds, bad enough to make me cry out every time, and nearly pass out from pain. Both times I met up with kind people, but the wait was too long, and the care from the doctors was mediocre at best. The nurses, the registration staff, the cleaning people - everyone seems to care more about my well-being than the doctors. I explained to the doctor that I wanted an injection of pain medication rather than a tablet so that I could get relief from the pain more quickly. It took 30 minutes to get the injection (might as well have taken the pill). They sent me on my way barely able to walk - crying out in pain as I left the building. I think the right person could get in there and make some significant changes that wouldn't cost anything, and make the emergency room a much more effective, empathetic, and efficient facility that provides a much higher quality of care. I love Eureka, and our citizens deserve better. read more

Beware of the way that St. Joe's bills accounts. Every visit you make is assigned a new account number. That means that if you went in for blood work and have been making regular payments on the amount due and then you go back to them for something else on a different day, they do NOT combine the amounts due under your account, which means you will likely be sent to their collections agency. No one in billing, either in-house or at the collections agency, ever seems to be able to give consistent information. We have been told opposing things from both companies on the same day. And yet, they still cash the checks. Every person I work with (I work in a medical office with physicians who work at St. Joe's) has experienced the absolutely ridiculous way that services are billed for and for this reason alone, most of us go out of our way to avoid having any services done at St. Joe's. Just as with any hospital, there are good and bad doctors, nurses, support staff and clerical staff, however, it's not worth the bother of the idiotic way the organization handles its accounts to have anything done there that can be done elsewhere. read more

Had just came home after going in at three thirty am, for a horrible swollen lymph node on my neck due to not one dentist in town that takes my insurance for surgery. Ive been in severe pain for days and do take pain meds for a chronic condition, this Dr. gave me no advice other than to do a dental block. which has terrible after math pain as they stabb you with enough novacain to numb a horses head. When it wore off i was in more pain than i went in with due to the Dr. not at all compassionate use of a needle.. so I came home with a paper that said nothing i didnt know, i have an infection, thats it ! what a wast of my life. Get people out of pain and dont lie that they cant give you any thing that would really work such as what they did last time a few months back anti bio"s and some break through pain meds until i sawmy primary care giver. Get some help for the poor that are in dire need of a good dentist read more
