My mom has been diagnosed with cancer for over a year. Dr. Suneil Khanna is an amazing physician, along with all the nurses in the Infusion Center. However, the ER needs a few tweaks operationally. My Mom had a subdural brain bleed at 4am on Jan 3rd. We called 911 and which took her to St. Michael's ER. We arrived at 4:30am. The gurney was parked right outside the double doors of ER suite for 20min before a triage nurse approached and determined that it was ER worthy to let us go in. Then the gurney was pushed against a wall and all 4 of us waited. Mom on the gurney, me and 2 EMT personnel just stood around for 40minutes even though this was an active brain bleed. It wasn't until my Mom had a seizure and I started panicking and yelling that a doctor came and yelled at a nurse for some Ativan IV. From then on she got a room. Order was for a stat CT Scan of the brain. When the CT tech came, no nurse was available because apparently, a nurse has to be available to accompany the patient and the CT tech. If there's an emergency and no nurse avail, then Mom could not go up with the tech and needed to wait. I found it ironic that no one cared that her brain was having an active bleed within the ER walls, but she couldn't go upstairs with just a tech without a nurse on the short trip. read more

I had a major fall last night after tripping over something (I wasn't at home). I injured 7 locations but the reason I came to the emergency was to get an x-ray because I think I had a hairline fracture at the edge of my right knee cap. There was searing pain when I gentle touched it. The entrance hallway is going through renovations so everything looked a little messy. An Ontario website shows this hospital's emergency department has an average 1.3h wait to see a doctor and average 2.8h (low-urgency) to complete a diagnosis. This is the times I went through: 11:02: Arrived at emergency entrance and screened. 11:08: Patient intake. 11:12: Triage. Strangely they screen you again! 11:16: Waiting in Yellow Zone. 11:25: Waiting in examination room. 11:46: Doctor came in to examine. Doctor said no fracture but I really wanted an x-ray. 12:05: Went to x-ray. No waiting. 12:14: Finished x-ray. Waiting for doctor to tell me results. 12:38: Doctor told me there is no fracture. I was lucky to come on a day and time when they were not so busy. Overall, all staff were cordial. The waiting areas had plexiglass between each chair except in the x-ray waiting room. The x-ray bed and lead shield were cleaned after use. There is free WiFi everywhere I went inside the hospital. The hospital is wheelchair accessible. 2021-010 read more

So, I wanna start by saying that reviewers whining about wait time in an ER are any combination of a) dumber than dirt b) they've NEVER been to a hospital ER in Canada c) they don't know that wait times used to be as long as 14 hours for non-critical issues or d) they have the patience of a TODDLER. I got in relatively quickly, September 17, but then I had an "acute" problem (see pictures), plus an infection. I did arrive at 8 am, so that definitely helped with the wait time! All of the staff, from the registration and triage staff, to the nurses, xray and ultrasound techs, and porters, were all kind. I fell and injured my foot, ankle and knee on September 2nd. Unfortunately, the swelling in my patella isn't going away, actually, it's getting worse. So here I sit. Had blood taken, I'm on a 6 lead ECG, had my xrays, just finished the ultrasound (looking for blood clots). Waiting for the orderlies to take me back. The doctor finally drained my knee, a serious amount of blood..... But refused to send it to the lab for tests, to be sure no infection was starting... Which I'm not really happy about, it would have taken 2 minutes, and 3 gp's told me that I needed the fluid tested. She also wouldn't order a knee ultrasound or give me a referral to an infectious disease specialist either, WHICH TWO gp's told me that I needed prior to my visit to the ER. Grrrrrrrr. 24 plus hours later, the swelling and heat on and around my knee is NO better. I also want to say that NOT HAVING ANY pillows available for ER patients, plus really soft very uncomfortable mattresses, is COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE. There were patients in the ER that had been there for 2 plus days. I was in pain within a few hours! It feels like you're laying on metal, that's how soft and thin the mattresses are. So, St. Mike's Management, WAKE UP.... what a mean way to safe a few pennies! Because of this, plus the very poor doctor situation, I wouldn't recommend this hospital. So, after having Dr. Andrea Simpson perform a fibroid removal and polypectomy, she damaged my vaginal rugae, opening and perineum. I put in a complaint with the College of Physician's and Surgeons, but all they did was review her procedural notes, which conveniently did not have anything incriminating in it. After healing for months, physically and emotionally, I have decided to let Karma do its job. Today though, I went in to see Dr Yiwen Liu. She is filling in for Dr. simpson while she is on leave. I made the appointment to discuss what options were available for me to try to fix the damaged rugae and opening and perineum, I had believed Dr. Liu had the emotional maturity to be objective. Unfortunately, this was not the case. She used this exam to try to disprove my concerns, which was not concerning her, though she admitted the rugae was not symmetrical. She decided to use the time that I had, as it had taken hours to get to the city to see her, to advise me on her perspective of what was normal for a 'vagina'. She was gaslighting and denied me any healing, by demeaning my own ability to know and feel a part of me was missing, as I even felt the pain during the healing. This was a waste of time and insulting to the act of feminists everywhere, as I did not go to the appt to discuss Dr Simpson, but she made it into 'the' issue, at one point even saying ' we did nothing wrong', and that 'she didn't see anything 'abnormal', though admittedly, she had never given me an examination before. Her observations were bias, no doubt hoping to protect Dr. Andrea Simpson's image, and irrelevant, as she had no background in my care to make such claims about my gentilia. This whole experience has been psychologically traumatizing. The utter nonsense of them denying a full grown woman her truth. It feels like a woman who has been raped and is being told she wasn't. I know my body, and yet they are trying to tell me what I look like is normal to claim it didn't happen. Whether it is in the range of 'normal' or not does not take away from the fact my vagina was unnecessarily damaged during the surgery and is not the same as pre-surgery. It's disgusting to think these are professionals, and ones who aim to be pro woman health, as visibly it is obviously missing on one side and Dr. Yiwen Liu 's statements are not correct. Even though she can see one side is missing, god forbid, she would rather protect the reputation of their colleague than honor the truth. I understand they may respect her, but what she did is wrong and still needs to be accounted for. Doctors are not gods free from human error. Anyway, I had waited ridiculously long to get in to have this ' routine' surgery, only to come out with my genitals sliced and no accountability. St. Michael's Hospital Gynecology Women's Clinic does not seem to have high enough standards for patient care, and lacks protection for the patients they care for. Because this is a doctor with a good ' reputation' , people are trying to protect her. This is not okay. All I can hope is that they are treated the way they have treated me and that people are aware of the potential dangers. May I receive my justice. Amen. read more

I'm giving St. Mike's 5 stars although I did encounter one rather rude staff member on Sat, May 26th'18 @ approximately 3pm in Emergency. Older lady with short blonde hair - she must have been having a bad day. She worked intake right when you walk in, and I sure as heck didn't have time for her rudeness as I was hemorrhaging while speaking to her. I was admitted to the 15th floor of Cardinal Carter, Room 34 and Bed 2. This was the first time ever spending the night in the hospital, let alone being admitted and sent in for last minute surgery. I remember one nurse named Jennifer and another named Megan. As well, I had a girl porter who was covered in tattoos. One nurse that helped me quite a bit had long dark brown hair and a nose ring. And there were a few more awesome ones as well. I wish I could say thank you to everyone at this hospital that made my stay extremely comfortable and less scary for me. At least for me, the care provided would be the exact same care I would wish family to be provided as well. Emergency room nurses, doctors on call, and nurses after being admitted. A++. Thank you. My discharge papers had a mistake on the second page though, so need to fix that up. Stay was great. Caught an older woman smoking in the Emergency waiting room and told on her. Had an older gentlemen freaking out because he was waiting so long and everytime a non-white person was called to the back room of Emergency he would scream he was Canadian. My roommate after being admitted was a mouth full of trucker - she finally was told to stop swearing - millennial. One pillow per person rule!! Apparently people steal pillows from the hospital .... gross. Wait time in Emergency was a bit long but that's expected. I wasn't dying, almost but not, so a little bit of a wait wasn't something for me to freak out about. One nurse that brought me ice and helped me in Emergency sure looked tired, but she was still very happy and caring, thank you. Great hospital! Provided me awesome care! Everyone spoke to me with respect and were gentle. St. Michael's Paediatric Clinic is where my son's paediatrician is located - Dr. Campbell! He is awesome! He is very kind, humble and he makes you feel so comfortable. He was recommended to me by my aunt who's daughter is also seen by him, and so far I have no complaints about him or the clinic in general. However, the reason I am only giving only THREE STARS is because I continue to have the misfortune of having to interact with Bernadette (one of the staff nurses at the clinic) She is such a nasty woman! no empathy, insensitive with absolutely no class whatsoever! it's as if she doesn't think before she speaks, blurts out everything and anything that comes to her mind like she has absolutely no sense. Absolutely trash behaviour!! I honestly can't stand her! When I see her I literally cringe. The last visit it took everything within me to not snatch my son away from her and storm out of there! She yelled at me because I missed an appointment for the RSV clinic that I did not know I had! My understanding was that I needed to call in order to book a time slot for my son. I didn't call so obviously I wasn't interested. But, they went ahead and booked him anyway so how is that my fault? Then she had the infantry to inform me that the RSV vaccine is "$700 a vial" and that I made her "waste it". I was shocked! Why are you telling me about the cost? It's like she's trying to shame me for missing an appointment that she was extremely pushy about and that I didn't want in first place until I had done my own research and made my own conclusions. I have every right to make an informed decision about my son's healthcare. Not only am I a parent but I am a nurse also, and it's imperative that we provide our opinions on what we feel is best for our clients BUT, it's also more important that they are allowed to make their own decisions. She obviously missed that class! I suggest the hospital offer her an inservice on AUTONOMY, PATERNALISM and overall PROFESSIONALISM because the fact that for some reason she feels it's okay to conduct herself in that manner is so foreign to me, it's like she's from another planet. As an RN myself it really pains me that I have to write this review about her because I know how challenging our role can be but, honestly the way she conducts herself around parents is unacceptable and needs to be addressed. It doesn't take much to treat people with respect and courtesy. I really hope the correct parties from the hospital see this. I would have escalated it further myself that day but, I was in a hurry to get the heck out of there. Here begins my tale of foot woe. I will have to agree with all previous ER reviews for this hospital - it wasn't that great. But, according to the nurses and hospital staff, after being "bumped up" from the queue, my waiting time could have been a lot worse. And yes, I am sad to say, I had x-rays done in front of people who were in the waiting room before me. With no rhyme or reason, I will chalk it up to me being sooo great (sarcasm). So, the brilliant girl I am, I decided to jump off a 10 foot wall. Because you know, that's how I roll. The immediate impact to my foot was...immediate. The closest hospital was SM's and I was taken to Emerg and arrived at 1-ish. The emerg is old. It looks like it came from a set of some 70's movie, and the usual, small, kind of smelly etc.... I knew I was in trouble because my issue (broken heel) would probably be anyone's last concern. Not really an emergency, but I still needed to get it checked. There is a reception lady who asks what happens. Then, I am to check in with another reception lady who asks for address, health card information etc... By the way, if you do not have your health card, that can be retrieved. I found it really cool how connected the systems were. Then, I was to wait in the waiting room to be called. I was able to watch the Spanish UEFA game while waiting and 2 hours later, I was shuffled into another waiting room to wait for x-rays. An hour later, I was shuffled into yet another waiting room to wait for x-rays. One hour later, a 3 minute x-ray was taken. After that, I was put in the same small waiting room to wait for CT scans to be taken. Meanwhile, I was watching the end of the Spanish soccer game, sitting beside a convict in chains who kept grinning at me (I reminded him of his girlfriend) and two police officers. An hour later, I was taken to some ghost-town floor for CT scans and another hour, the doctor told me I had a broken foot. A temporary splinter was put on my foot and 45 minutes later, someone remembered to get my pair of crutches. This was of course after my boyfriend went to ask someone where my crutches were. The nurse apologized for forgetting me. I left SM's emergency at 8:45 in the night - 7 hours and change after admission. All for a fracture in the heel. I WILL NEVER JUMP OF WALLS AGAIN! read more

Already been here three hours, after spending two hours at a walk in (that sent me here). Frustrating to see nurses an doctors chilling out, hanging out, (when not yelling at the cleaning staff), and not a single patients name has been called since I've been here. It is not that busy (probably other people know to go anywhere but here). There has to be a better hospital, but I don't know the area well enough - so I'm stuck. I have nothing but good things to say about the specialty clinic I'm part of, the imaging staff for the 10+ x-rays/CTs/MRIs, the lab techs, the nurses and doctors, etc. but I want to take a moment to be clear about another subsection of the hospital too: If *anyone* says anything bad about the Prescription Care Center staff they will catch these hands. I'm a chronically ill, financially-limited person who needs multiple life-sustaining medications daily, many of which are expensive, and the pharmacists and staff (looking at you Stephen and Annie) are beyond helpful when it comes to finding alternatives that keep me in the best shape possible while letting me continue paying rent and tuition. I'm serious. I understand if someone else might've had a bad interaction once or twice--that's fair given all people have different kinds of days--but in general, highest praises only for this set up. Anyone who disagrees, I'll meet you in a parking lot. I've got 20 years of hospital-earned anatomy experience to put to good use. I'll still probably lose but you'll have tried to fight a chronically ill person so you'll be the real loser here. read more

Absolutely horrible hospital! I was admitted here in 2009. I had a malpractice claim against them but did not realize there was a claim until many years later. (I am now a malpractice attorney.) I was admitted for about 3 weeks after an injury. After I was discharged I began researching the notes written on my discharge papers and a few symptoms I had begun experiencing. I noticed that the symptoms I was experiencing were a very common outcome for people with my particular injuries and a very common result was life-threatening infection and meningitis. I went back to St Michaels to talk to a doctor about the issue. They immediately admitted me again and began a series of procedures. My condition was life-threatening and had to be resolved immediately. Everything I had read was correct - however, the doctors had given me no warning nor had they checked for these symptoms. After another 3 weeks at the hospital, a few extremely painful procedures and a few months of bedrest - I was discharged and I recovered. To make matters worse during this experience, I was literally starved during my time at the hospital. I have dietary restrictions and I remember everytime the nurse would bring me food - I would tell her I cant eat this because of my dietary restrictions. She would tell me to "eat what you can" and I will bring the right meal option next time. This continued throughout my stay. I had lost 15-20lbs when I was discharged at the end. If you can - I would highly recommend visiting a different hospital. read more

I came here to accompany a friend who was sadly diagnosed with cancer for a sigmoidoscopy. The tumor was initially detected under CT at this hospital's ER unit. In fact, he had a colonscopy done already after the ER procedure, at a local clinic. However the histology result of the biopsies taken from the scopy turned out to be "no malignancy". We were here for another scopy so things can be better looked at. Everyone was very pleasant but the surgeon who performed the procedure advised that she was not able to figure out whether it was a tumor or simply infection. Anyways biopsies have been obtained again and sent to the lab. The bedside manner was great but I don't think I am in a position to comment on their medical practice yet so I'd just leave it as it for now Hospital itself is in downtown core and admits lots of patients each day. I am not that impressed with the renovation here since it definitely makes navigating more difficult which is unacceptable for a hospital in my opinion. The signs could be more clear too. TIP: According to my friend ER seems to have shorter wait time on Monday morning. (Hopefully, you would never need this tip though!) read more

Went to emergency in great pain, unable to walk or urinate. I was admitted for a week. They treated my symptoms as best they could, but no diagnosis or prognosis. Sent home with a catheter, home care and walker, as they told me the Canadian Government does not compensate them for in hospital diagnosis. Instead they send you home as they did me, and in 4-8 weeks you'll get an appointment for outpatient services from the specialty departments . They will continue with tests and diagnosis. How can the cost of homecare services, including a physio assessment of my house and the professional installation of safety equipment, not to mention the horrific inconvenience, discomfort and change to normal activities that this causes, cost less than an in hospital assessment and diagnosis. read more

I had great, life saving care and spent 2 weeks there until I recovered and was sent back to Lakeridge Oshawa where again I received stellar care and rehabilitation until I gained as full recovery as possible. Went the to the ER yesterday. Aside from the wait (8hours in total) i can only say good things about the hoapital. From the triage to the consultation everybody was nice and paying attention to my problem. I felt listened and being taking care of. St. Mike's is, first and foremost, an inner city hospital. As such, if you come in through the ER, expect to be hustled through by triage nurses who've seen everything, and to see at least a couple beat up crackheads who are tweaking so hard, they don't even know they're injured. But the standard of care on offer here, belies all of that, and reveals a deeply caring staff of highly trained doctors and nurses, who, like the patients, put up with some of the inner-city issues, because of the opportunity to change lives and help people who need it most. I had to have emergency neurosurgery here, to relieve a severe spinal cord compression in my neck. Every single staff member that I interacted with, from the clinical assistants all the way up to the neurosurgeon who performed my operation (Dr. Perrin), treated me with respect and dignity and compassion for the fear and uncertainty that spinal surgery naturally brings out. Nobody wants to end up in the hospital, but if you live in downtown Toronto, it's comforting to know that the closest hospital is a really good choice. read more

Superb, compassionate hospital with so many connections into the community. Very (from my experiences, all mr ER trips being very valid and very justified) excellent Emergency Dept, but like all hospitals, you never know wait time. That's standard across any hospital. I've waited actually at St Mike's very little. Again, I've had serious issues and they have always been ready for me - literally. The hospital is a live-saver. ER doctors are kind, nurses are very compassionate (remember, never go into ER being an idiot and demanding -- be as kind as you can under your health circumstances and they are equally as kind and compassionate to you, truly - in ER, they have an -extremely stressful job- especially in the catchment area for St. Michael's Hospital, which is the neighbourhood the hospital is in; at times people trying to seek drugs, as opposed to legit medical help, so give the ER a terrific hands up). St. Michael's has been a life-saver many times and being a Catholic hospital, they strive to work by their mission and values very well and they go so VERY well. Thanks St Mike's for being there. The number and variety of their programs and clinics is extensive and their doctors as well as all their support staff are really really friendly and helpful. They, (unlike a hospital like Mt Sinai), work with some poorer, less fortunate clients who deserve the same attention to medical care as anyone else and I've never seen a hospital work so incredibly well in the community and with outpatient services all the time. Usually the customer service is helpful -- However the X-ray department receptionists can be quite anal. My family doctor works for St. Michael's Family Services, and had requested an xray for me. Because he hadn't signed one part of the document requesting said x ray, I was refused service. I had to go back to my doctor at 410 Sherbourne 4th floor, and have my doctor sign the form. I was first drawn to this hospital because I had to pick a place to give birth 20 years ago and I figured the Catholic way is the no-nonsense way, you know: Push, scream, wipe, and then take it and go. I don't need to be coddled when doing a chore (Women's College with an allocated mid-wife swaying a tannis root potpourri over your third eye). And I didn't want to end up at that hospital known as Caesareans R Us (Mt Sinai) because the obstetrician-on-call had a golf weekend planned. I successfully gave birth to two baby heathens (we are not Catholic!) at St.Mikes and could not be have happier with the delivery service and the care of the nurses. Years later, in The Age of Internet Oversharing, I had my very first colonoscopy. This procedure is that thing you have to have do at a certain age and if you don't, you're a pussy. It's middle aged hazing is what it is. To prepare you take 4 poop tablets and all night long you drink 4 litres of poop "prep." Then you poop. All night. It's not all that bad because you are bristling with the excitement knowing the next morning you will have an anal probe and cookies after. The ultimate day. The Endoscopy Clinic at St.Mike's is well run machine. You check in and you wait your turn. The very idea that motley group sitting in the waiting room was more or less voluntarily going to have the most intimate of procedures kind of blew my mind. THE CHOCOLATE STARFISH FEDERATION UNITED! Thoughts that run through your head in a hospital should probably not be shared but this is Yelp and we are all friends here. Everything was explained in a letter that was mailed months earlier. The key to success is in the prep and directions were very clear and the length of time time your hospital visit was estimated 3-3.5 hours which was exactly right. The nurses at St Mikes and administration at the endoscopy clinic could not have been nicer. Anal probes are their business and they were extremely gracious about it, to the point it almost seemed normal like getting your nails done. The nurse who injected my fluid pack, which would later contain the painkillers, laughed at my jokes and eased my anxiety. Dr. Irvine, who performed the colonoscopy, was equally jovial and explained clearly what would happen and that the drugs would make me sleepy, not turn me into a werewolf. Or an exotic dancer. Funny was the nurse who helped with the procedure said to me: "You seem agitated." I know, right? I suppose she performs these so often that she can be non-chalant about sticking a camera up a stranger's butthole but I'm scared out of my mind! I get freaked when a dude slips a pinky up there during foreplay, I DON'T EVEN WEAR THONG UNDERWEAR. But I sucked it up, lay on my side, and accepted the narcotic drip into my life. Narcotics...THAT is the answer, I felt nothing, emotionally or physically. I fell asleep (as they inserted the camera hose), into that kind of submissive sleep you drift into when you are watching Mad Men on Sunday night. I woke up minutes later to what looked like a close up on something on Top Chef during the calamari challenge. You can watch the procedure on the screen which is AWESOME. Nothing hurt, the whole thing took 20 minutes but it felt like no time at all. Afterwards they wheel you on your bed to a room with the rest of the recuperating Chocolate Starfish Federation. They let you sleep some more and the nurses whisper in your ear: "It's okay to fart." And the low notes of relief fill the room. And then you get cookies and juice! read more

I've been here a few times, as a patient or accompanying family members. I can't say anything bad about this hospital, especially if I compare it to some of the US health care places I have been to (cough! expensive and less attentive). The specialists we've come across are caring, patient, and extremely knowledgeable yet able to explain complex medical situation in concise "normal" language. Love their "patient navigators" who are nurse professionals that guide and help you through whatever tests the doctors have ordered. I wouldn't wish sickness on me or anyone. But if I do get sick, it's comforting to be in this place. read more

What can I say about St Michaels? This is by far the best ER hospital in the city. Their quick response time is amazing when unfortunately my husband and I got rear ended by a moronic taxi driver. Luckily we were ok just a bit in shock. And also at the time I slid off from the motorcycle during a trial test. I was not injured but I had a very sore body the next day. The doctors here are very attentive. I also love St Michaels Women Clinic when I had to go for the semi annual colposcopy follow-up; the clinic had a modern design to feel to it and state of the art medical equipment felt like you were in a dental clinic! read more

I came here for an allergy test with Dr. Vadas. He and his staff were very friendly and explained all the steps that I needed to take very clearly, which I greatly appreciated. They took the time to answer my questions and make me feel at ease, particularly during the prick test, which went by very quickly. I kind of wonder about the quality of the tests, though, since I am incredibly allergic to cats (2 hours in a room and I lose the ability to breathe) and my cat allergy test came up negative. I wonder if it's some residual allergy meds that I took earlier that week, but it was before the stated 3-day cutoff. Then again, I take allergy meds maybe 5 times a year, so maybe they stay in my system longer? I don't know. Anyhow, the clinic was clean, though a bit tough to find. read more

I had a valve replaces Aug3,2021 . My date with St Mike in the last chance saloon and was given a 2nd chance. I have no complaint whatsoever in fact i got a bonus of warm feet and legs for the first time in more than a dozen years . I can only say thank you to the whole team . Grace read more

Instead of meeting up in a tired old pub somewhere, three old friends decided to hit the ER at St. Mike's for some quality (wait) time. Four hours and seven stitches later, we were fully caught up with each other - and our friend's bike lane busted bicep was as good as new. Four stars because snack machine selection was underwhelming. read more

Habitually disrespectful, stress inducing, time wasting experience when it comes to dealing with reception staff (with very few exceptions) at Infectious Disease/HIV Care Clinic. Both in person and over a phone (no e-mail, text; basically any most widely used 21st century forms of communication available!) Very recent example: Called to reschedule appointment to be put on hold (by someone screaming only "hold, please") for quarter of an hour to have unidentified (position, name) person begin quiz me not only about appointment details (provided) but my personal info. Upon having to insist on identification of a person I was to disclose mine first (it is connected to medical, private and very sensitive information after all) heard mumbling "Latic.." no last name followed by another prompt just to hear muffed "admi..." with something unintelligible added. NOW comes a standard kicker; all that to have phone call dropped without being able to change an appointment (why wouldn't you behave like a child star on tax payer dime). Nothing but answering service in subsequent calls made after (which, of course, have gone to be un-responded to so far). !! Makes one consider cost saving and personnel's time freeing SELF-CHECK/BOOKING APP a desired option !! esp. if you are forced to deal with machine in the end. I do feel the efforts of whole medical staff and care received in that clinic are undermined by those situations along with my trust in institution that is supposed to provide if not improve patients health being eroded . read more
