Amazing care! My Dad had spinal cord surgery & every step was filled with the kindest, ultimate professionals. I've been to the top hospitals in the country myself, and this hospital rivals them all. Unbelievable in Montana. Endless list of exceptional caregivers. Greatest anesthesiologist (Cheyenne) lots of explanation and information. Dr. Campbell, the surgeon is top notch! To open, I have worked in medicine for the better part of 20 years so I am going to be drawing an image of my experience colored with this lingo. First, I'd like to say that Dr. Ludwig and his staff have been derilect at nearly every level of patient continuity-of-care, but especially their ability and timeliness of ANY communication. While I am sure that Dr. Ludwig is an intelligent and very competent physician, the same cannot be said for his staff (not to say they weren't nice, they certainly were, but being nice and be an advocate for your patient are two different things). Starting with Misty (Insurance Auth), who was supposed to work with and keep me informed of my costs and the successive steps to ensure that my insurer received everything they needed for the approval, to the nurse, Sharon (Educator), who was supposed to be following me along the journey to ensure I was meeting specific goals and, of coursse, the collective coordination between she and Misty so that all team members were working toward meeting their patients needs. My first visit was encouraging and each team member explained their roles and what I could expect as they worked together to make the process seamless. On my second visit this coordination between team members was clearly abscent. As months went by I continued to meet or exceed every health goal and training/education goal set before me, but, as I achieved these the further behind my team became with making sure those markers were presented to my insurer so that a pre-apporval deadline was met. Eventually the date came where they wanted to set a surgery date. When I asked about costs, no one had any answers. I was told to call my insurers to ask them, which I did. My primary did not offer coverage, my secondary did. So we set a date. As the date neared I was notified about 2 weeks before that my secondary insurer had not received any of the documentation they needed from my doctor. When I called (and emailed) my care team about this, I was told that my insurer was being "unreasonable" and was essentially told that I needed to find a pathway around the roadblocks. So I called my insurer. They had not recieved ANY documentation for the pre-approval outside of a diagnosis code (really? WTF) so I contacted my care team and did confirm this. So, screw it, I gathered all of these items (as I had copies) and was then given an immediate approval. My surgery was then scheduled for a Wed. at 6am. and whent moment drew near, litterally at 5pm Tuesday night, (having fasted and witheld medications in preparation for surgery in the morning) I was told that the Hospital would require an ABN (basically a promise to pay $60K out-of-pocket for the procedure). When I asked why, a different person working in billing stated, that since my Primary insurer did not provide coverage, there was a loop-hole that says my secondary doesn't have to pay either (even though they DO provide coverage). So, at 6pm I miraculously reached my seconday insurer to confirm this, which, horrifyingly, they did. So, in litterally the last possible second, I was forced to cancel a surgery I had spent MONTHS jumping through hoops and spending THOUSANDS to get ready for...all for absolutely nothing...but guess who wins? That's right. Providence and their network. Now, if a close review had been done by my care team at the beginning, I would have known all of this ahead of time and would never have gone through tireless specialist appointments they sent me to meet insurance criteria that was never investigated or understood to begin with. I will NEVER again do business with Providence Gastro. Finally, I will leave one last thought. Niether Dr. Ludwig nor ANY of his staff have ever reached out to me about this colossal f*ck-up since I was forced to call things off. Not a call saying they'd work with my insurer to figure out a new path, not a call to say "I'm sorry we dropped the ball" NOTHING but crickets. I am litterally heartbroken and out THOUSANDS of dollars for nothing. read more

I don't want to share too much personal info but I brought my 75 yr old mom into ER and it was probably the most awkward and unhelpful ER visit Ive experienced across different states. One MA was compassionate among the 7 different staff we interacted with. The information was just barely sufficient. I think that they either are not trained to interact with anyone with anxiety/autism/elderly or any mental health variation, or they don't care. And it matters when helping someone in a potential emergency. What I took away from the experience was a new fear that I might one day need emergency care and end up there myself. read more

I was ignored, marginalized, and the doctor assigned to me FORGOT to examine me until AFTER he had discharged me, and I was getting dressed. At that point it was cursory. My injuries were missed, and diagnosed post ER at primary office. The survey I filled out was ignored. You are just a number, and a money maker to them. Good luck! read more

It was a joke to me when on the news recently they chose Christopher Hellekson to speak to mental health issues in our community! Why? Because he's the worst Doctor I've ever had!! Condescending and single hand idly trying to make being mentally ill a crime!!! We've worked so hard to have mental illness treated and respected as any other illness and Christopher Hellekson is working diligently to do just the opposite!! Don't use him as your provider because he'll provide nothing helpful in your mental health journey!! In fact he 'll provide the opposite he'll make you feel worse, and guess what Christopher...you're supposed to, as you took an oath, as every other Dr. takes to do no harm, and that's all he does is harm!!! I'm very happy with my new provider who is respectful and helpful on every level!! BTW she's not in Providence Psychiatry...if he is who they want to represent them...I wouldn't use Providence Psychiatry period!!! read more

The health care staff at St. Patrick's are amazing. The accounting department staff are quite helpful. However, if St. Patrick's owes you money, it will be a long time before you get a refund. Amazingly, they "had no record" payment three weeks after the insurance company set it over. I'd say to watch them like a hawk if they owe you money. I've always had good experiences at St Pats. I grew up in Missoula and have used their facility and outpatient services and ER more than once or had family members and friends admit here. This weekend, they took great care of my Grandma. She had a routine laproscopic hernia repair but her oxygen tanked for some reason, likely aspiration, and they quickly moved her to ICU. I thought this was very responsive and appreciated their care and attention. She was hallucinating and agitated, but nursing staff was still caring and patient. I can't remember all of their namrd but Steve was one who made her and our experience quite wonderful. Rooms were clean and had beautiful views. See the pic! read more

Less than satisfactory My son that is on immune system modulators had to go to the ER for bilateral thumb lacerations due to all urgent cares being closed. The lacerations were not terribly deep but due to being over joint lines and bilateral, along with slow healing time ( due to underlying condition) and risk for infection ( due to immune system modulating medications), sutures were warranted. Dr. Kremkau was rushed, placed tissue adhesive over the wounds without even approximating the wound margins and sent him on his way. He falsely documented twice that my son's tetanus shot was up to date and that he reviewed the nurse's notes when the nurse's notes stated he was due for tetanus booster. He never received his tetanus booster. 12 hours after the adhesive was placed, both wounds were open and bleeding. Today, 10 days later, still open and trying to heal. I tried to discuss this with Providence St. Patrick's ER manager but was told the doctor reviewed the chart and " it was too bad they opened up, and tetanus isn't really needed for this kind of wound". Careless medicine, lack of compassion and less than the standard of care. Now I have a $2000 ER bill for wounds that were not taken care of, still open, and no tetanus immunization. Not sure this is standard of care of Emergency Medicine. read more

In early December,I went to the ER after getting a moderate concussion. I had many warning signs that clearly indicate you should receive medical care. Vision problems, confusion, massive swelling, time loss and balance problems. I was checked in quickly, the nurse who brought me back watched me limping off balance, moving slowly and had the audacity to tell me to "hurry up." I would imagine a quality nurse with education would have insisted on getting me a wheelchair. The doctor was polite and efficient. However, overall I felt like I was treated as though my visit was unnecessary and unimportant to their priorities. When I was for coming in to the ER for a serious medical need. The staff neglected to tell me key information about concussion recovery such as not taking aspirin and not drinking alcohol. All of this was in the papers they sent me home with. It's completely inadequate to hand someone paperwork and not go over it with you, even more so if the person's mental capacity is limited. If I could give them negative stars, I would. I am definitely going to consider treatment elsewhere should the need arise. read more

I have been admitted to the hospital more than my fair share of times over the years for reason ranging from thyroid surgery to kidney stones to knee surgery, most recently for an emergency appendectomy. Every time I've had such wonderful experiences with every single staff member from the information desk, to radiology, to intake, billing department, nurses, anesthesiology, doctors and surgeons. Every single staff member has been extremely friendly, helpful, competent and genuinely warm. Outside of one isolated incident with an inexperienced nurse who pushed a medication too fast causing me to experience chest wall rigidity, a deadly condition, my stays at St. Pats have been wonderful. Nurses at pre-op even gave my daughter $5 cash to go get tacos across the street when I wasn't able to connect to my banking app to transfer money to her right before I went in for surgery! They are further from me than Community but I will never go anywhere else. read more

What an amazing experience at this hospital. Highly recommend. My wife and I had our son at this hospital and the attentiveness, helpfulness, and overall customer service experience we had with the nurses during our two night stay in the baby ward was nothing short of amazing. All the staff who were with us seemed highly experienced, very confident in their jobs and roles. The views of downtown Missoula from our room were excellent and the room itself is completely clean, modern, and high end. Highly recommend! was in the hospital January 29 at about 7 PM and I went in for a horrible sickness which ended up being the flu I've been sick for a month and a half and then thrown around with the wrong medications after seeing Michael kremkue in the ER he handed me prescriptions and told me he was giving me coding cough syrup and prednisone. When I went to go get the prescription turns out they don't even make it anymore and all they were willing to give me his regular cough syrup I have been very sick for a long time and regular cough syrup has not helped because I've been using it for half the time I've been sick. My hue just complaint is that he lied to both me and my fiancé when giving me the prescription I spent an hour at Walmart trying to figure things out and it turns out all I get is regular cough syrup because when I called my doctor I was not allowed to speak to him and they told me they would not rewrite my script. I think that it is illegal not to mention just horrible for him to lie to your patient. On top of that the fact that I could not speak to him and the nurse Amanda running the front desk was being very rude to me. I would like them both to be reprimanded for being completely rude to me and not giving me what I needed in order to feel better.It was the only thing that helped me in the ER and the respiratory nurses had told him to give it to me. I took my daughter to the E.R. at St Patrick's where she told the doctor she was going to kill herself and described how she would do it. They sent her home and refused care for her. It's probably the best hospital service in Missoula and the surrounding area. The only other choice is Community Medical. And to some extent Partnership Healthcare, which is not so good. I do not like medical establishments in general, however, this one is a charity hospital, and they seem to have gotten some key things right. I was directed by St. Pats staff, to go to a clinic inside St. Pats building for a needed surgery; a clinic which I found out later is not part of St. Pats, but did not know this at the time. So when I got a large bill awhile after giving them my insurance information, I went to billing at St. Pats -the office, not over the phone- and met with with someone, both to look for relief and having been rubbed-wrong by the for-hire gun of the collections department of the clinic. This is where I found out that the clinic has no relationship to St. Pats other than a rental arrangement, although the doctors and staff naturally had some professional connections with St. Pats through the medical community, referrals, etc. Arrangements were made, and the surgery was rescheduled to meet some billing parameters, and that was that. I am glad I have had the surgery. There is a NOW Clinic and a pharmacy located here; these are also St. Pats facilities. If you have a choice between Partnership and the NOW Clinic, definitely come to NOW. Partnership mentality is, as they are serving the no/low income community, the absolutely poorest financially, they can provide second-rate services and attentiveness to clients. I don't find this attitude at St. Pats. I have had to shuffle people between both, and the level of service at St. Pats is much better. St. Pats has: A pharmacy, a cafe, an espresso bar, some kind of library, free wifi (when it works), volunteers who help direct people around the byzantine layout, and other facilities one might expect at a modern hospital. read more

I can only say I wish there were negative star ratings. Absolutely the most horrific stay and treatment I have ever received from a hospital. The cardiac team was horrible. The doctor only wanted to brag about himself and degrade/demean both myself and my wife. After being in ICU three days, two in Helena, and one in Missoula, their "cardiac specialist" couldn't be bothered to perform a possible life saving procedure set me home with med he said might work although he doubted it. What a waste of money and time. I will hopefully get to Salt Lake soon and find a doctor who isn't to busy to help a patient who has had to get his heart electrically shocked three times in a month. One can expect to pay 3000$ for a simple cat scan. This is an abdomen and pelvic w/o contrast. This is double the price of Community hospital. And unfortunately nearly 600% higher than the national average. We are being fleeced here in Missoula by a multi billion dollar "non profit" we need fair and transparent pricing when getting service from our health providers. Medical professionals should not be able to hide prices until after procedures are completed. This was not emergency care. It was a simple doctors visit at western Montana clinic. My elderly brother-in-law was recently hospitalized for a medical procedure. I thought the medical service was great. The nurses & CNAs were very professional. However, dealing with dementia patients is a whole different ballgame. Since his medical issues were resolved, we set up palliative care through Hestia & he has improved dramatically. He was being medicated in order to control him. St Patrick's deals with medical issues, not dementia. The caregivers from Hestia are unsung heroes! read more

This is not the hospital that it once was. Upon walking in the door, you can sense the low employee morale, visit more than one department and you will witness the pass-the-buck attitude and department infighting. I have had blood tests lost and appointments lost (even after checking in and waiting an hour, they "forgot" about me). Make an appointment to see a doctor (soonest is three months), he recommends another doctor (four more months) then that one says " I don't know why they sent you to see me, there is nothing I can do, not my field of expertise". Many good doctors have left or been forced out, since they are too good. Seriously, some are taking too much time with patients, which isn't good for profits. I have been a patient of one of these doctors. I know that his schedule wasn't timely, but I also know that he would devote as much time as necessary. He was forced into retirement. Next available appointment in that specialty? 8 months! Even simple tests seem to be months of waiting for an appointment. Then, don't get started on the billing. So confusing that even the billing people can't make sense of it. Discounts for select groups but not for cash? Charging for tests that weren't done and for visits that THEY cancelled. There are many helpful and caring people here, but it seems that they are the exception, and are fighting a battle where the corporate ownership of this hospital wants them out since they aren't fast enough. Look around and go elsewhere. Even if you need to travel hundreds of miles, you will probably get better care, or at least much faster care of equal quality. read more

I received hip replacement surgery at St. Pat's. I was impressed with every aspect of my care. The nurses were ever present and attentive. I was unable to have an advocate present at this time, but found that there was always someone available to meet my every need. The food was wonderful, the sanitary precautions meticulously met, and the support staff very skilled. The experience was flawless. read more

Absolutely the worst ER I have ever been in. I believe they get a lot of indigent people, so they assume everyone is looking to get drugs, or people are making up symptoms. Whereas if you have a genuine medical issue, they just ignore you. They don't listen, they just ask a couple of questions and if you have more to say about your medical condition they don't want to hear it. They are incredibly understaffed, that includes doctors, nurses and people to clean the rooms. So irregardless of how much you're hurting, they will stick you in the hallway sitting there for four hours, they just don't seem to care. I can't speak for the hospital as a whole, but the ER is an absolute nightmare. read more

On my first ER visit, I was treated but discharged without the appropriate prescriptions, so my husband called back for blood pressure and anti-nausea meds. Dr. Stanley Seagraves flat-out refused and I had to be re-admitted at a huge cost two days later. Thank goodness, Dr. Daniel Gee came to my rescue the second time around. I learned from my follow-up visit with my preferred provider that Seagraves had made discriminatory remarks (basically, he acts as if you're to blame for being sick). They assume you're a druggie if you have middle-age acne, if you're thin, if you insist on care, if you ask about financial help, if you discuss your case with better nursing skills than they have, all in all, for anything they damn well please. I can't imagine what happens to the LGBT crowd! To make a long story short, it's hit-or-miss that you'll even get the most basic care based on the current staff's prejudices. Be very careful and DEMAND CARE if they don't perform. This just cost me over $30,000! Oh, and by the way, CMC's worse. read more

My mother had been under the care of the Montana Cancer Center at St. Pat's for many years for a blood disorder. Yet, until June 2018, she wasn't diagnosed with a fatal cancer. She was treated with respect, dignity, and kindness by all of the doctors, nurses, and other staff members at St. Pat's. After one of her routine infusion/chemo appointments, her blood tests showed a kidney problem and she was admitted to room 540 on Sept 11, 2018. We had no idea she'd never go home again. After 3 weeks of care in the hospital, she passed away. My sister and I stayed in her hospital room for 3 weeks with her --one cot and one recliner. The nurses and other staff members were very supportive and caring with both our mom and us, especially Michaela, Kelly, and Dana. The social workers, financial guy (Allen), and cleaning lady Terri were all so kind and caring during The Most Difficult Days of my life! The harpist is wonderful and was such a sweet surprise to all of us! I've never heard of a hospital employing a full time harp player as part of the palliative care team to bring peace, both to patients and families who are facing the impending loss of each other. AMAZING!! One of my strongest memories of my sweet mom's stay at St. Pat's. So much so that I replayed a recording of hers at my mom's internment yesterday in Hamilton. This review pertains to St Patrick's ER. I brought my 75 year old husband there a couple of weeks ago for severe, excruciating abdominal pain. He also has a very serious medical condition. After being triaged in the waiting room, he was told that he would have to wait his turn. He asked if he could please lie down while waiting, even just on the floor in the corner of the waiting room. They adamantly refused to let him lie down (against their "policy") and so, finally, after more than an hour curled up in a chair in absolute misery, he went outside to lie down on the ground. They were fine with that and said they would come get him when they were ready. This is the kind of treatment I'd expect to get in a third world country. I cannot believe it is their idea of continuing to "honor and live by a commitment to compassionate service that the Sisters of Providence began more than 155 years ago" (their words). For heaven's sake, at least let people in severe pain lie down while they are waiting to be seen! read more

I have been to many hospitals for many reasons and I have also worked in many hospitals as a nurse. Three of the very best encounters in health care as a patient happened at St. Pat's. First I had a CT scan: nurse and tech were wonderful. Then I had a mammogram and two ultrasounds. As I was waiting I got a call saying that a specialist doctor could see me that day and could I be there at 1 pm. I said I didn't think so because I had these other tests. I asked the Imaging scheduler if there was any chance of bumping my scans earlier...she said no way. But 5" later the mammogram tech came and got me. I said wait, I'm not scheduled for another 1/2 hour. She said, we're going to get you to the appt. And they did! Wow! Then I just had a recent surgery here. All of the staff were wonderful! From pre-op teaching, pre-op waiting, OR, PACU and post op...everyone was kind, knowledgeable, readily answered questions. You could really tell that the staff worked together well as a team. They were all helping each other out. It was heart warming to be the patient who benefited from such great team work. The anesthesiologist, Dr. Wendy Miller, was the BEST! She listened to my previous issues with anesthesia, told me what she would like to try and I had NO complications. It was wonderful! This was my 1th surgery and the best surgical experience I've ever had! I live 2 1/2 hours away but I will be returning to St. Pat's for an upcoming surgery and future tests. Drugged me, and kicked me out on the street at 4:00 am, with shingles, and the pain was so bad I had to use a cane. No coat, or money and my ride had her Grandbaby and was he was ill, and she didn't want to risk exposing the baby. I asked if I could wait for a ride in the waiting room, or till it got daylight, so I could hitchhike home. They called security and kicked me out. I told the ER doc that I had tried the drug he gave me before and had wicked side effects...It fell on deaf ears. I have lost nearly 90 pounds, from PTSD and a traumatic brain injury, and I am extremely frail and ill. Didn't even do labs. I am covered with bruises from falling malnutrition, and new medication side effects. I had been alone and had been severely ill since before the 3rd of July. I told them whatever they gave me made me loopy and nauseous. My only option was to walk to the Poverello. I started walking while drugged and feeling drunk. Not a good idea, and was nearly assaulted and mugged by 3 drunks. I went back to the ER, and they jumped on my ass for putting myself in the situation. Community Hospital allowed me to wait in the er until I got a ride and was safe. Icouldn't even walk and I had never been treated so rudely and unprofessional in life. I was diagnosed with shingles, I could not walk, hadn't been able to keep anything, down, and the pain was driving me crazy. I thought I could tough it out. I was wrong, so I went to the St Pat's ER like my provider wanted me too. I hate hospitals even more now. I would rather deal with it myself, but I was too ill. I am filing a formal complaint. I feel pretty lucky to be alive, or raped and thrown in the river. I was freezing to death, with only summer atire. Wow, believe me, you all will contacted by my lawyer. They're having extreme pain in my upper right quadrant of my torso and in my shoulder blade, I suspected a gallbladder attack and was taken to the emergency room by a family member at a little after 10 p.m. on a Sunday night. I was promptly triaged, shown to a room, met with the doctor in just under 15 minutes , and after a small battery of tests my suspicions about the gallbladder attack were confirmed. The doctor provided me with the necessary medication to ease the excruciating pain, as well as anti-nausea medicine to combat the vomitting I had been experiencing. She was caring attentive, very knowledgeable, and explained how I could avoid this problem in the future. After visiting many hospitals over the years I was treated Far and Away better at st. Patrick's Hospital than at any other Hospital in the United States. I was not questioned about my level of pain, the service was prompt quick and professional. And they had me out the door feeling much better in no time at all. I highly recommend should you need to visit an ER to take your family to St Patrick's Hospital read more

Worse horrific ER experience ever. The most unprofessional uncaring belligerent techs that handled triage. It was a nightmare. These people are there only to make their wage. They were right down evil, mean and wick. It's to bad that the St. Pats administration puts up with these type of people. There are a lot of nice nurses and staff there, but the ER techs that day were out of hand. And to treat a person the way they did who is in excruciating pain was uncalled for. So much more I could say about this bad experience, but my advice is go to different ER if you want quality professional caring help. read more
